That’s JPJ on the organ. That man can play anything. They have organ on other tracks. Since I’ve Been Loving You is another blues track with organ. That’s Robert Plant on harmonica. He kills the harmonica in When the Levee Breaks on Zep IV.
No guest players - just the band. Robert Plant, vocals and harmonica, John Paul Jones, keyboards and bass, Jimmy Page lead guitar, John Bonham drums. It was Jimmy Page who produced the first album. He paid for it too. The album was inspired by a lot of traditional blues songs. JPJ was a session player (as was Jimmy Page) before he joined LZ and as session players they were called upon to play almost anything in their instrument field. JPJ could play almost anything he was asked to in the way of keyboards, bass, strings and woodwind instruments. Robert Plant was an excellent harmonica player. This is not often mentioned.
Chronological is the way to go. You can see how great they were from the start and how they evolved over time. Plus, they are a very album oriented band. Enjoy, it’s a helluva ride!
There's no break, the album rolled straight into Dazed and Confused. They didn't give us a break at all. I was 12 years old, my older brother brought this album home....I music taste had just been formed for life. Side two did the same thing with I Can't Quit You, and How Many More Times.

Robert Plant plays harmonica. The bass player, John Paul Jones plays the keyboard. He could play church organ like this to funky Stevie Wonder sounding keys like in Trampled Underfoot, to haunting keys like in Kashmir and No Quarter. He also plays mandolin on a few tracks. Great to see 2 subsequent generations from my own (Zep came out when I was 15 and rocked our world) enjoying this music. Great father/son team. Cheers from Canada
To be precise, Led Zeppelin ruled the last week of the '60s, in addition to the'70s. Zep took the throne from The Beatles when their second album debuted at #1 on the charts, at Christmas of '69, knocking off Abbey Road out of the top spot.
Jimmy used a Telecaster I while he was in The Yardbirds and on this album. Joe Walsh told him that he HAD to have a Les Paul, and convinced him to buy his guitar. Jimmy fell in love with it and I believe he used Les Pauls for years. I honestly don’t know the brand of the double-neck that Jimmy had custom made to perform Stairway to Heaven, but I’m sure some gear-head on here does…….
Page had a Les Paul years before he met Joe Walsh. His Les Paul (a Black Beauty) was his main session work guitar but it was stolen. Then he got the sunburst Les Paul off Walsh. He has the Black Beauty back now. The guitar Page is playing on You Shook Me is a Gibson Flying V, which he borrowed from a friend.
Led zeppelin were the ones that knocked the Beatles off the number one spot of the charts, the Beatles were a great band held that spot for years until the mighty zeppelin flew in
This is pure orgasmic level, I've always love that sound of Page's tone off the first record. He switch to a Les Paul I believe, after this album he bought it off of Joe Walsh. Led Zeppelin is one of the most influential band in rock history enjoy the rabbit hole.
Jimmy Page invented the backwords echo that you hear at the end of the song during the call and reaponse with Robert Plant. Jimmy produced their albums.
Ya the reverse echo, 16 track recordings, channel phasing, the distortion box ,WaWa pedal and Phaser.Double neck guitar , using a violin bow. Modification of a 1930's Theramen. Not to mention a brilliant composer and producer. Oh yea and on top of that the best guitar player that the music industry had known. The most influential band of all times. Nobody did it better than Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin. The Greatest Band to Ever Grace the Stage, They were then, They are Today and will forever be Tomorrow.
Robert Plant played the harmonica. Jimmy Page can play a wicked harmonica, but during Zeppelin’s run, Robert was the harmonica guy. Jimmy was a little occupied with another instrument. 😜
This was also done a year earlier by the Jeff Beck Group on their album Truth. The singer was a young, fresh faced, Rod Stewart. The song was written by US bluesman, Willi Dixon.
Jimmy Page was playing his dragon fender Telecaster on this album! The Beatles inspired many bands but zeppelin changed the music scene in 69 and inspired many bands going forward!still to this day they're still inspiring young musicians!
This song is an old blues song by Howling Wolfe. Back when this album came out is was normal for an entire record to have great songs throughout with maybe some ok ones sprinkled in. Now you get one song with a bunch of crap if your lucky or just don't know what GOOD music is.
Hammond B3 organ. The bass player plays it and about every other instrument ever made. The vocalist plays harp. There are no bad tunes on this album or any of their studio albums. All very different and all great.
Awesome arn't they, just waite till you get to the lemon song. The beginings of zep started with " The new yardbirds" producing awesome blues. Chec kout "london blues"
Page was a proficient harmonica player but Plant plays all harmonicas on the albums. Just wait for When the Levee Breaks, you will love harmonica on this! JPJ and JP were. highly regarded session musicians in London as well as arrangers and Jimmy was also a producer. JPJ is an educated musician - organ and piano. In LZ he plays bass, organs, piano and mandolin, Page plays guitars (several kinds), he can play bass as well, which he did, at first, in his time with Yardbirds. He plays bass on That’s the Way on LZ III. He plays also, harmonica and piano. Page produced all their albums.
Jimmy Page: electric guitar played with a slide, run hard into a old tube amp, with a rotary or phase effect, delay effect on the solo. John Paul Jones: bass, Rhodes piano and organ
Please guys do the best led song, the masterpiece "Since i've been loving you " studio version a let the fire and your mind explode . Hugs from Brasil !!!!
Robert Plant plays the harmonica!! But their keyboards--bass guy is their own John Paul Jones!! He plays bass with a foot pedal, and organ at the same time on this piece!!! They were BRILLIANT individual musicians---who knew and understood how to play as an ensemble. One of the best blues-rock bands ever.
I saw :ed Zeppelin in concert in 1969. I was in a band in college at the time. We did a bunch of Led Zeppelin songs. I was the lead singer. I am 33 days older than Robert Plant. 🙂
Page is most closely linked is his 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard with sunburst finish, a guitar he played for many years of his career with Led Zeppelin. Page had owned and played a three-pickup Les Paul Custom in the early Sixties and played a Fender Telecaster while with the Yardbirds.
They were all session musicians for several years - hence they were as "good a Ray". Led Zeppelein 1 had organ - I saw them a few months after this album came out (1969) and the base player switched between bass and organ.
Great reaction guys. First time I heard this song was in 1986. I was finishing my freshman year of high school and my stepdad asked if I wanted to check out his record collection and he was an OG hippie. Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Black Sabbath, Creedence, Stevie Ray Vaughn, ZZ Top, Rush and I have been a rocker ever since.
Great reaction! Your enthusiasm is genuine and infectious. I've been a LZ fan since 1969. Still regard them as the greatest rock band of all time. I appreciate your shout out to Bandmaid. The best rock band of the last 30 years. They give me hope for the hard rock genre. Please consider reacting to Real Existence - live version 2018. WARNING- you better have your sunglasses, fire extinguisher and your guitar at the ready because the live version is fire right from the get go. Cheers
Yes, when songs are played as singles, they chop them off at the end because they all go right into the next track. Back then (a very long time ago for me!) people just got together, smoked a little weed, put on the whole side of the album, had some munchies and a little chat, then flipped the album and listened to the whole side again. A lot of 'concept' albums of the time were like that. Floyd, Moody Blues, and others. Led Zeppelin are eternal.
That's a Hammond B3 Organ. It's a beast that weighs almost as much as a piano, full of tubes and a matching cabinet that has 2 rotating speakers inside that the player controls with his feet to speed up and slow down the rotation of the speakers, which creates that pulsating effect. John Paul Jones, the bassist, played the organ. Robert is the harmonica player. Jimmy played the slide guitar parts on a regular guitar. You put a glass or metal 'slide' on your finger and run it along the string and it sounds like that. I'm pretty sure he mostly or exclusively used his Telecaster on this album and started using the Les Paul later. He also used Danelectro guitars but not sure if he did on Zep I
To add to my first comment (or second) lol. The Bass player John Paul Jones played the organ, and Robert Plant playing Harmonica. This song IS A COVER of what I believe was originally by Willie Dixon!! Great Great songwriter of CHESS RECORDS!! Enough is Enough, Great Reaction!! Now I gotta check out your reaction to How Many More Times!! Which I already know what your reaction will be!!
The guitar on this album is a Fender Stratocaster given to him by Jeff Beck - another amazing guitar player of the day and they were both in a band called the Yardbirds (pre Led Zeppelin )
Sounds like a Hammond organ.probably the first successful affordable electric organ. They were often played through Leslie speaker cabinets that contain a rotating horn speaker.true story. That gives that cool heavy tremolo/ vibrato sound.
Jimmy shows that guitars really do sing. Both Robert and Jimmy always in sync.... But then they all were. 4 gods together. Yes Robert can play harmonica
Led Zeppelin is the all time king of rock, no doubt, in my top 5 Bands all time regardless of genre or era. But if you guys think there is no good music now, I respond with there is little good 'popular music' that is consumed by the masses But there is wonderful rock music still being made by female fronted bands like Halestorm (the great Lzzy Hale on vocals, 2nd guitar & keyboards), Liliac (amazing band of siblings who have incredible originals & covers), Dorothy (Martin, awesome vocalist & hard rocker), Simply Reckless (powerhouse vocals and heavy videos) and Samantha Fish (great young guitarist/ vocalist / songwriter, she does an awesome cover of War Pigs). They are all young, from teens to 30s and active and all are producing new music and covering old classics. Rock is not dead or only made in the last century, you just have to look for it. Good hunting and Rock On, I have been since the Beatles played on the legendary Ed Sullivan show in 1964. It is now apparent that Rock is here to stay.. Enjoy! 😎
You guys will love these bands if you give them a chance, old school rock with modern sensibilities and kick butt vocals and incredible musical talent. I am 66, been to 100s of concerts since 1971 and would pay good $ to see any of them. Rock On! 😎
Since the advent of sampling you do hear this stuff now, they just lift the best riffs and sounds and then someone raps over it. You see it all the time on other reaction channels, 'Hey, hold on. I know this!" then they realise where the stuff they're been listening to all their life originally came from. The reaction that stunned me the most was some guy saying he couldn't follow the lyrics because the voice was going up and down... Dude, that's called singing! LOL
You mentioned Band Maid for those who like the Zeppelin hard rock sound……I’m sure you’ve heard Greta Van Fleet, yes? They’re the most Zeppelin sounding rock being played these days I think……and they’re excellent!
That is a Hammond B-3 organ . Mind you, this was recorded in one take. Jimmy Page was useing his Les Paul. Robert Plant is vocals and harp. Not on this song but Jimmy Page would use a cello bow on his guitar for a distinct sound.
Led Zeppelin did this quite a bit taking old blues tunes and cranking up the volume, this is a 1962 blues song recorded by Chicago blues artist Muddy Waters, another one they did is "When The Levee Breaks", a country blues song written and first recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. Many of the British rock bands of that era would tell you that their biggest influence were old blues artists. The roots of rock is blues.
Willie Dixon wrote & originally performed this Savoy Brown was before Zeppelin & covered a lot of the same stuff Nope ; Robert Plant - Singer , Harmonica Jimmy Page - Guitar John Paul Jones - Bass , Keyboards & Organ John Bonham - Drums
John Paul Jones on Hammond B3 Organ and bass, Robert Plant Harmonica. They do that because all four are master musicians, especially Jones.
2000 likes soooo true...listen to No Quarter...Jimmy was the leader in "new sounds"
The answer is TALENT!!!
You will LOVE Since I've Been Loving You
They played the organ in a lot of their music. John Paul Jones played the organ, the Mellotron, the bass, and the mandolin, and I’m sure I’m unaware of what else he was capable of. Jonesy was tops!

The whole album is a Banger!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Zeppelin 1 is the greatest debut album of all time. Just to show you how great zeppelin is.

Thank you C Lab. We were blown away by the song!
On this album he played a Fender Telecaster and an acoustic I dont know the name of....John paul Jones does organ and bass...The singer Robert Plant plays the harmonica
This song was actually recorded on a Gibson v that he borrowed

The thing with Zeppelin music you need to listen to the complete album . Because that's the way it was produced to be played
That is a great example of how they were just meant to be together. 1st album...they were so in sync from day one.
If you like bluesy Zep, "since I been lovin you" is next
They are working through LZI, track by track.

Some lines from the blues are iconic and archetypal of the blues through their history. “You shook me all night long” is one of them.
John Paul Jones plays the organ. Robert Plant plays harmonica. These guys are multitalented

He also used Danelectro guitars but not sure if he did on Zep I
You have two great blues left of this album: "How Many More Times" and "I Can't Quit You, Baby"
Blends into dazed and confused perfectly
The guitar on this album is a Fender Stratocaster given to him by Jeff Beck - another amazing guitar player of the day and they were both in a band called the Yardbirds (pre Led Zeppelin )
This track was a flying vee, rest of album mainly Telecaster.
@@m.b-ee8815 would have loved to have seen that!! 😅 Never heard/saw him play a V.
Sounds like a Hammond organ.probably the first successful affordable electric organ. They were often played through Leslie speaker cabinets that contain a rotating horn speaker.true story. That gives that cool heavy tremolo/ vibrato sound.
You guys may want to check out 'Thank You' by Led Zeppelin from their album Led Zeppelin 2. It is perhaps their most beautiful song.
Yeah, Zeppelin I IS one of the top debut albums in rock…….another is Boston for sure…..and Bad Company….
John Paul Jones is the bass player who also plays organ and piano
Fabulous reaction guys , please keep it going , your British fans numbers are growing by the day .👍👍👍👍👍😁
The organ was popular in the 60s and 70s. Three Dig Night. Yes Robert play harmonica and guitar too.
Jimmy shows that guitars really do sing. Both Robert and Jimmy always in sync.... But then they all were. 4 gods together. Yes Robert can play harmonica
Great reaction. I love this channel!!!!!!!!
Thanks Howard!
Jimmy Page- Fender Telecaster for much of his studio work. Gibson Les Paul for his live stuff.
Sheesh one take!
Led Zeppelin is one of my favorite rock bands. Thank you i loved your reaction. You should react to their live performances, they are much much better
Willie Dixon wrote & originally performed this
Savoy Brown was before Zeppelin & covered a lot of the same stuff
Nope ; Robert Plant - Singer , Harmonica
Jimmy Page - Guitar
John Paul Jones - Bass , Keyboards & Organ
John Bonham - Drums
