This song is an act of absolute adoration and expression directed at the source material, performed by young players for the purpose of expressing the impact it had on them.
brian russell I watch a fair few reaction videos, and it’s hilarious seeing some of them thinking they are intelligently breaking down a song, when they have clearly missed the meaning by a country mile. STB is the only guy who genuinely offers real insight
Listen, I really missed STB when he took a short sabbatical and I am genuinely ecstatic that he came back and is re-uploading these wonderful songs! The in-depth analysis that he’s so great at not only help him understand the music the way that we who have listened for fifty or more years ‘get it’. Gives me faith in the younger generation that they might just understand why we have been such die hard fans of not just Zeppelin but the other groups that changed our hearts minds and souls. Annie/TN 💕
I really like that he's not gimmicky like so many so-called reactors who seem to love every song that they react to even though they can't really explain why. One of the really intelligent people doing reactions.
I feel lucky that I grew up when led zep was just coming to light. My older brother came home with Led Zep II album when it came out. My aunt Ruth was visiting at the time and he excitedly put it on the turn table for her and us to listen. I’ll never forget after Whole Lotta Love she said , “oh that’s nice”
I know this great reaction came out about a year ago but I was rewatching it just like listening to a favorite record. First to hear the song again but also to see an authentic appreciation of great, great music and musicianship. Keep up your great reactions. You really break it down properly.
This is the music I grew up listening to brother. Anxiously awaited a new album from them they were Huge in the 70's. Everyone was into Zeppelin and partying then. Lots of good times, memories and some shit I can't remember... ✌️
This is one of my very favorite studio songs, I love how they display their different talents. These four love the blues, & do them justice, with such soulful passion. I always find it hard to believe, they’ve only been together about 2 months, when they recorded this whole album. Greatest band ever.
Having seen Led Zeppelin 6 times and lived through this wonderful time of great music I really enjoy and relate to your reviews. You get it STB and your commentary is always spot on. When I first heard Led Zeppelin the Beatles were still together! I discovered the blues from listening to these records. Amazing …
I just wanted to say, I really enjoy listening to your reviews. You have a great sense of professionalism with your delivery in your critique of music. Thank you. Go Navy.
you are like the Yoda of reactions... amazing... "I have a bird that whistles.. I have a bird that sings..." Is a reference to 1930s blue.. Robert Johnson. Find it.. will blow your mind how old time blues influenced all music.
Welcome back! In case you're interested: the "dual" you mention in the end is a typical blues way of writing and playing two phrases after each other, usually referred to as "call and response". You can find many blues artists doing this; one example would be:Sunny Boy Williamson responding to his own harmonica by singing the following phrase or the other way round. Thanks for doing great content! ❤️
Thanks again for another great analysis. I love this and I Can't Quit You from LZ1. LZ does alot of "call and response." Sometimes between Robert and Jimmy and sometimes between Jimmy and Bonzo. I love the call and response in this song. LZ only performed this live during their 1969 concerts primarily. Over time, I've tried to find filmed live performances of LZ songs. I've been unable to find one for this song. There is "promo cut" from the Beat Club in 3-1969 but this is a live performance with the studio cut over dubbed to the film. There is a live partial recording if you're interested from 8/31/69 at the Texas International Pop Festival. It is a mismash of You shook me, dazed and confused and how many more times. You Shook Me is on the video to 1:08 and then later from 1:58 to 3:00 - although there is audio out there of live performances, unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any other film at this point in time. ruclips.net/video/_8_mgqOMJCc/видео.html
4/20/2021 - Just listened to your reaction to this song that I've listened to many hundreds of times. I bought LZ One the summer of 1969 when I was seventeen. Now I'm 69 and over the years my affection for this version of YSM continues to grow. The Muddy Waters original is still a favorite of mine as he makes his guitar sing as well but obviously not like Paige. The Piano in the original is classic too. I was taken by your admiration of the LZ version and it made me smile (again)
I have always loved Led Zeppelin as long as I can remember! I wish I could have seen your dad watching this with you! I just found and love your channel because you are always respectful and genuine. I love watching your initial reactions and that you don’t get hung up on looks/clothes, I’ve seen too many “reactors” get offended and offensive/petty about hair, clothes etc and it’s honestly a turn off. I also really appreciate how much you dig into all your subjects. Keep up the great work and stay happy and real. ♥️
I really enjoy your well thought out, intelligent retrospect of Zeppelin songs. It makes me dive deeper into my thoughts about them as well. Like rediscovering.
Welcome back to youtube soul brother. Robert Plant is also a fantastic guitar player although he never played the guitar in led zeppelin because there was never any need for him to do so. Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones had that well and truly covered. Jimmy Page himself could also play a pretty mean harmonica too.
Fun listening to your reactions to Led Zep, whether Dazed and Confused, Levy Breaks, Loving you, etc... You understand it. And can articulate it... Awesome
Amazing reaction and analysis, thanks so much, bro 👍 to me it feels as if the music reaches into my heart, pulls it out, turns it upside down, squeezes it and puts it back in…just like you, I would trip over my tongue after listening to it 😵💫 I wonder what your reaction would be to another interesting group, called ‘Dirty Loops’. Check out their songs “Rock You” or “Work Sh*t Out”. Thanks bro 🙏
I think he was having troubles with You Tube and so went on to Patreon. Have seen some of his stuff on Vimeo too. I think these are old reactions, but I'm still glad to see them!
Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones are amazing on this track. Led Zeppelin's the best band out there. There's no one else that compliments each other as they did or ever will.
Ok, I realize this guy is mad smart and he’s super chill. I like that about him, he obviously loves music and knows a lot. Question, does he have a video where he just goes off? Has the man ever raised his voice? He’s deep, he’s a deep thinker.
When I was young, I used to strip for my husband to this song. And maybe a boyfriend after him. Then for myself. Always Robert Plant on my mind. To this day.
Atlantic Records had a twenty year history of recording and promoting black artists. Jerry Wexler of Atlantic actually coined the term Rhythm and Blues to replace “race music.” So when Atlantic was sold and delved into more profitable rock music they signed a band formed by a couple of well known London session musicians (Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones). LZs first album was recorded in short order, something like 20 hours studio time. The band had very little original material, even recycling “Dazed And Confused” and “Black Mountain Side” (White Summer) from Page’s old band The Yardbirds. So they did an amazing mashup of blues standards to create 40 minutes for an LP. All these elements came together and produced genius, in my opinion LZs greatest album.
If you'd listened to the lp, you'd find that THIS amazing blues tune segues immediately into ANOTHER incredible rock song, Dazed and Confused... Zepp refused to release singles, believing that individual songs are informed by what comes before and after them! Nonetheless, a great reaction from THE man!!!
members of Led Zeppelin were known to be huge Willy Dixon fans, "you shook me" and "I can't quit you babe" are two songs on the first album written by Willy Dixon, Dixon's family were able to successfully sue Led Zeppelin for using his material without permission, even though on the album the songs clearly state written by Willy Dixon
1j007zm, I’m not 100% sure, but I believe that originally (I.e., on older pressings of the album), the credit wasn’t given. Maybe the writing credits were added after the lawsuit?
@@CliffinAZ I don't know because I still have my original Led Zeppelin 1 album I purchased in 1970 and it mentions Willy Dixon, but I think they got sued over a guitar riff because Robert Plant always used to say that it was really Jimmy's riff and not Willie's
1j007zm, if you have one from that far back then that would be what was originally there. You know, now that I’m reading up on this I see that Dixon’s lawsuits were based on the second album-the use of his music on Bring It On Home and some of his lyrics in Whole Lotta Love. But they were also sued by Jake Holmes (and settled with him) for Dazed and Confused, which he’d written as a folk song. Check the credits on that one: I believe they say it was written by Jimmy Page. The thing was: plenty of people knew Jake Holmes’ version at the time (and the Zeppelin version had actually started out as a Yardbirds cover, which probably was lyrically closer to the original).
@@CliffinAZ Yeah, I remember hearing an old blues song with almost identical lyrics, the song I heard said "whole lotta lovin" instead of "whole lotta love". I also remember the Yard birds version of "dazed and confused", Led Zep were also sued by Dixon for riffs from "When the levee breaks", recently they were able to successfully defend themselves against a band called spirit, for the opening riffs to "stairway to heaven", justices are starting to notice that many old music groups are having to much success suing rock stars for music that doesn't sound to much like theirs, hinting at that it might start getting harder to do so in the near future
1j007zm Yep, I read about the Spirit lawsuit. I’m glad Zep won that one. To me, Taurus just doesn’t sound anywhere close enough to Stairway to Heaven to merit a lawsuit-unlike, for example, Dazed and Confused, where the Zep version was clearly a new, expanded version of the original. Jake Holmes didn’t even want full credit for that one, just some share of royalties, rightly considering Zep to have made a substantial contribution that went beyond his original idea. Taurus was a very short piece, very unfinished in comparison to Stairway, and not even including any lyrics. It can also be argued that that initial riff that was similar between both songs originated with classical music, not with Taurus. The grounds of the lawsuit were also ludicrous, implying that a law that didn’t even exist when Taurus or Stairway was created should be retroactively applied to the lawsuit. That’s just crazy, because if Spirit has actually won, it would have set a lawsuit whereby anyone could be sued for having done something that was perfectly legal at the time, and then became illegal 20 or 30 years after the fact! But some lawyers will do anything to try to win their client money, no matter how wrong it is...
I enjoy your thoughtful and knowledgeable commentary, especially because its about supposedly "white guy" music that I grew up with but is new to you, and I gain new insight and appreciation with each of your videos. I want to very highly recommend you devote some time to discovering the genius of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, in my mind the greatest American composer of the 20th century. Great reaction to a superb rendition of classic blues.
Thanks!
And the next track on Led Zep 1 is Dazed and Confused.....bloody amazin.
One of the mysteries of the universe, is Plant singing along to Pages guitar or is Pages guitar singing along with Plants voice?
