This is the first video I watch talking about how to become a data analyst that doesn't mention the google data analytics certificate. I am at the end of the 5th course of the program and now I realize that certificate doesn't teach you enough to get a job as a data analyst.
Hi, this probably won't mean much but this really helped me and i appreciate it a lot, i'm starting in Data Analysis and landed my first job in a related area.
That’s so awesome Daniel!! Thank you for saying that, it really does mean a lot. Good luck in your new job and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions along your data analyst journey!
This is gold. Thanks for putting it out there for an aspiring data analyst. Left my job a few weeks ago to study and learn full time. Working on a solid foundation with google data analytics and IBM data analytics certificates first. Afterward, I will be taking the courses you outlined. Thanks! You earned a sub.
@@TAHJBecomeYourBestSelf The capstone project forces you to use IBM's Cognos BI tool and the grading mechanism makes you wait until another student grades yours. You could be waiting several days. Some of the assignment questions aren't even covered in the material taught during the courses as well.
This is useful, I'm doing a Level 4 data analytics apprenticeship, coming to the end of it, but I'm still very much struggling with what to learn as I'm the only person in the company doing it! Thanks for the video x
Between 1:45 - 3:10 honestly just getting straight to the portfolio items matters more than getting a bunch of certifications. Demonstration vs theory is very different and you will be far in sync with how things really work by simply more fumbling through creating a portfolio item then by just doing a certification. For some reason people want to avoid that part and think that a piece of paper both for a certification and degree will change that you can do it... especially if it solves a related issue to the industry you want to break into by documenting it and showing your journey like you are right now.
If you get good with excel and powerbi, chances are you wont even need to learn SQL and python yet to start a junior data analist job. Granted the company has data scientists/engineers, it's more than likely there is already a SQL or some other kind of database set up which you can connect to with excel and powerbi to do your analytics. Powerquery within excel and powerbi is insanely powerful and easy to learn. lastly, people focus on hard skills but soft skills are equally, if not more, important. Don't forget this.
I dropped out of college. No degree, just a certification from a coding bootcamp. Make cool stuff, document/write about it, and show it to people. You’ve got this!
@@JackCalvinRoss Quick question what if people who come from different backgrounds attempt to learn Coding and these courses ? I am a motion designer and 3 animator I love my Job but I noticed in Europe everywhere these jobs are highly demanded and you can move around get jobs quite faster I noticed Idk I'll try to look up how they work because I once Took a web deveploment Course at school it was bring as hell and did not seem promising to me.
This is one of the best video of (How would i start over} type. jam packed info yet simple language is a hard recipe to master. Besides doing MS or intertrasfer what are the ways for people like me who wants to come over in the US for data analyst job? 1) You could make a separate YT video asking foreign employees at your office how did they join the US office. Their is a huge audience seeking such kind of information, Because many cannot afford MS in the US. 2) which laptop would u recommend- windows or mac?
Hi Jack! Great video with all the knowledge and info packed into understandable segments! You definitely will get some tech traffic! Also loved the transitions and bullet points on screen! Keep it up man 👍 Edit: This also helps me as I'm in job search-mode myself for web dev or graphic design. (haven't decided which yet!)
All courses I linked to were free! You only have to pay for the certification but the only thing that matters is the knowledge and what you do with it!
Good question! While I’ve never been tested on my Excel knowledge in an interview, I’ve definitely had to use it on the job. Definitely good to know but super easy to pick up if you don’t know it already.
I would definitely prioritize learning SQL over Python if you’re already proficient in R. Some jobs might force you to use specifically Python, R, or Excel, but most places just let you use whichever tool you need to get the analysis done. If you’re good with manipulating data in R, focus on improving your SQL skills!
Statistics. Hands down the best (and pretty much only beneficial) course I took before dropping out. Also gave me an edge that contributed to landing my current role! (Bonus points if you can apply what you learn in an analysis in Python or R)
@@JackCalvinRoss thanks for the advice. It’s hard to find a college approach on data analytics since most people or videos talk bout codecamps or self thought.
I do have my incomplete degree on my resume. Mainly because while I was at university I took a lot of statistics classes which a lot of employers really like to see for analytics roles. If you feel like you have enough of a reason to include it, definitely do. It helps give the employer a better idea of your story and the reasons why you chose to do a coding bootcamp. (And honestly I think it definitely helps with getting past automated resume checkers.) Most interviews I’ve done haven’t focused too much on my education as much as the projects that I’ve worked on and in some cases have never been asked if I competed my degree. (Doesn’t really matter when you’ve built cool stuff and can rock a coding interview!) Sorry for rambling, I’ve just thought a lot about this myself. Thanks for watching and good luck with the job search!!
@@JackCalvinRossThanks for replying to me bro. My unfinished degree is in Computer Science so I ended up putting my unfinished degree there and the computing courses I did. I only did 1 statistics course but I included it anyway. I have an additional question though, did you put the number of years you went to college like from 2012-2014 or did you just put “Bachelor’s degree in Analytics” and left there. How did you lay it out on your unfinished degree on resume?
@@JackCalvinRossbtw, very soon, I’d like your contact details to reach out to you on a more intimate level to speak to you about mentorship. But I’m looking to do that after I finish my analytics certificate.
@@JackCalvinRoss thanks for your response. And what about level of programming required for entry level position? I know at very good level sql and tableau but I need more exercise in python. If you can answer me I will appreciate!!

Not really but I did briefly intern as a data scientist at a small startup before landing my current position. My main selling point was my portfolio of data science projects!
90% of the data analyst job postings that I see require a bachelor's or master's degree. Check yourself and you'll see.. Yes you can do it without a degree but there's certain jobs that won't even allow you to apply as a data analyst if you don't have one of those degrees just saying.
Just because they say you need it doesn’t mean they require it. Above all, they need to know you have the skills to do the job and you can prove that through side projects and the technical interview. The job I have currently suggested bachelors or masters degree on the job posting and I have neither. It’s for sure harder to do without a degree but still definitely possible.
Hello, amazing information you have there. I'm pursuing a career as a data analyst and am currently in my third year at university. I would be grateful if you could serve as my mentor. That, I hope, is not too much to expect. Thank you
