Shortly after I uploaded the video about the Sonic Statue being restored, the actual owner of the statue called me and provided some new details about the statue and the restoration process.

Gotta Go... And see it myself someday!
Yeeeeeees yo congrats alsow the sonic was a statue of sega world of sonic and knuckles the game plus I'm 12 I'm a huge sonic fan that's why I play the classics and watch the sonic history
I am too scared to even get a hour away from my house :/
I noticed Sonic’s buckles were not painted :/
Same 😄 Arigato, Kotera-san, for restoring the statue so future Sonic fans can enjoy it. And thank you, Dave. If it hadn't been for your videos, this statue would have been forgotten. So, in a way, you helped restore the Sonic statue too 😉
Me Too
I love that statue.
Oh hallo thaer
Hey, I just watched your channel too
Yo
Hallo
Hey yo cybershell want a chat on twitter?
I dunno why the story of this statue and the fact it exists brings me so much joy, but it does.
May my other videos may also bring you such joy!
IKR this is such a great moment
Maybe because it's as lonely as you
@@evdestroy4121 that hits hard
I think it's a combination of things that came together in a perfect storm - the initial mystery of the statue's origins and how it got to it's current location is exactly the type of mystery that fuels the Internet, then the revelation that the original owner had passed away but also learning why he put the statue there was a sweet twist. The momentum that information provided to worldwide interest in the story also showed how much random strangers could care about some random statue in the middle of nowhere, which itself only added to the momentum as it gave everyone a sense of belonging to a community geared towards a positive goal and with all of the political and social turmoil going on even at that time, it felt good to be part of something that wasn't fueled by or a response to hatred - we all were coming together from a sense of love for the Sonic franchise and a desire to see a statue owned by an unassuming family be restored in their grandfather's memory.
Basically, it's a bittersweet feel good story that brought a fandom together during a time of stress to help a generous family who deserves their time in the limelight for being stewards of a piece of video game history.
A small reference in a game to the Sonic statue and the Kotera family would definitely be amazing.
My idea: if the game has hub worlds mr Kotera would be an NPC in a japan-like area and would talk about how sonic seems familiar to him but he can’t put his finger on it
And right next to him you would see the statue
@@Mariozaney So something like SA1 or Unleashed?
@Alfono yeah

History is restored this is a good timeline
That's right this is a good timeline
I guess you could say this is a *Good Future* help me
sonic cd
Is it though?
Yes it is
It's pretty cool how the surrounding area almost lit up when the statue was restored. It's like Sonic Generations!
It actually is. That thing is clearly in Mushroom Hill.
The statue actually kinda looks like he belongs in city escape
Think if Sega created a toy replica model of this statue i would most likely have to buy one.
Saaaame as long as it’s not too overpriced
@@Mariozaney like them first for figures or whatever its called that demand too many rings and all the chaos emeralds.
Better yet, make lawn ornament replicas of it! That'd be a sweet callback to the original and where it stands!
I feel that the Kotera family would refuse, but it would be nice if Sega would at least offer a small percentage of the income from a little replica model as a thank you for saving and now maintaining a landmark that's essentially free advertising.
You just gave me an idea....
I realized that they used a plastic ball for Sonic's Nose that's why it's so Circular did you guys know that?
That's why he looks odd
EDIT: this is my most liked reply
*triggered*
yes
yeah, doesn't look bad
I thought it was more or less done out of futureproofing. A round, smaller nose will hold stronger over the next few years against the elements than a longer nose.
Why am I just now getting recommended this
I feel that! Double with the fact your my lost media goto.
I knew i'd find you here!
Because God has beckend us

i saw this video before but just had time to watch the whole thing.. it was in between nagoya and osaka.. i assume he owned the land nearby it was not a main road so i assume his father get them and just put in there as something to get people to visist..
Seeing the photo of Yuji Naka and his kids posing Infront of it brings me joy
What a long journey it has been for this Sonic statue. It's all thanks to the fans and people who discovered this statue. Without us and especially you Badnik Mechanic, we won't know about it till this day and just rotting away even further. Thank you Badnik for covering it and brought everyone's attention to it.
Looking at this makes me think...
“WE WANT IT IN OUR HOUSE!”
Me too and I have a villa
Glad to see him restored.
He’s such a golden boi
He's super.
No hes not, he is a Blue Boi
From looking at the pictures here is what I can tell:
1. Seems like it was first sand blasted to strip it of its original paint before it actually got its full on restoration on the parts
2. Some of the pictures show some sand and off lines meaning that some sort of plaster or other kind of material (mostly similar to what was originally made of) was then put in to plug up the craks, holes and damaged bits.
3. The painting was done by parts and layers, meaning only one part was painted and let to dry befote going to a different part or color of tha statue.
The trees beside it seem to also been shaved away partially, which means they indeed sandblasted the thing
I wasn't expecting to see this 20 minutes after I watched the first video
SURPRISE!
The legendary boy has recovered
No its boi not boy
*He's back*
Me: 2020 is the worst.
Badnik Mechanic: Sonic is fully restored!
Me: 😃
I honestly am glad its been restored and by the family because I couldn't think of it looking any different than it does
from what I can see they used mesh, plaster, and wood fill which is easy to sand and paint over, after that they most likely sanded it smooth maybe added another coat and sanded it then added primer then paint. it looks like for the nose they attached with some form of epoxy or silicone caulking. after that I would assume they either painted it in a weather proof paint or they used normal paint and a weather proof clear coat over top of it. hope this is helpful or at least interesting, it is just me assuming from what most would probably use.
How long will the weather proof coating or weather proof paint last?
Sonic Statue Restored: Good Future.
Sonic Statue Destroyed: Bad Future.
SEGA World: Past.
Well is great that they contact you, you were the one of the many people that revealed the existence of the statue
I have always wanted to see this statue.... now I know if I ever go to Japan after the COVID-19 thing is over, I can not only see the statue, but see it restored!!! Thank you Kotera family for that!!! What an awesome gift to the world and the people who love that statue overlooking the mountains. Now Sonic can cheer on more car drivers and motorcyclist in the days to come!
The covid 19 thing is already over just not in the USA
Hate to break it to ya but covid is not going away. Ever.
But yeah im really happy to see this statue revitalized to its former glory.
@@Brabbs Not really... Not really...
I am going to bet this statue is made of fiberglass, which is actually (if you have the knowledge and skill, which I do not!) straightforward to repair.
The fact that SEGA was looking into this basically says that they put more effort into this than they needed to. SEGA, by no means had to get itself involved or even acknowledge it. What I can only assume at this point is that if SEGA was looking into it, it would clearly be for advertising purposes, giving some social media attention to the project. I could also imagine if they did get involved that they'd remove the statue and put it on public display at their headquarters, but with some acknowledgement to the family that had it in their possession. Mainly because of what the family said, that it's a dangerous highway and they'd probably be afraid of their liability. But again, just a logical guess.
ESSAY ESSAY
ok mr SEGA lawyer
On google maps, I recently found that one of the statue's supports actually failed, but the statue wasn't harmed. After this, the family put up a new metal support structure for the statue
Damn, this story just keeps getting better and better, keep it up, man! (Even tho, you just tell the story, but still) :)
Mr. Kotera and his family are absolute legends.
He covered up the cracks with mesh, covered them in putty, and covered everything in primer *(A type of liquid putty)*. Then the painting process would start with painters tape which makes the seams between colours more sharp. He most likely used multiple layers of glossy paint. For the nose I think he could’ve shaped a thick piece of acrylic or plastic, or he could’ve 3D printed a piece. (The nose was also covered in primer). He did a great job. This strategy is well known in construction and wall painting. It is typically not used in paintings as you would want to keep the artists image in the piece.
It’s amazing to think that in ONE year this statue has come so far. This statue is the whole reason I found this channel so it’s very special to me.
One thing that bugs me though... the buckles on his shoes were painted the wrong color #Cringe
I didn't even notice that until you pointed it out xd
It's bothering me too now
Wait crap, I see it now
First of all, OG sonic didn’t have buckles.
Second of all, making mistakes is cringe??
Perfect. Now they just need to repair the Sally Acorn statue rotting in some jackasses backyard.
A junkyard near Richmond, NSW, Australia?
The Sonic fandom can be super magical, man. This saga was great.
Not only Mashahiro Katera should have some recognition in a Sonic game but you should too Badnik Mechanic, as your excellent work in publicising the plight of the statue had a major influence on getting it restored and provided a captivating story for Sonic fans to follow!
Maybe if they go with the city level idea they could have a badnik mechanics shoo next to katera games...
Still waiting on that snowboarding sonic statue sega!
I would pay so much for one, no joke! It would also make the perfect christmas gift!
Wow that is amazing I'm so happy that the sonic statue is fully restored and looks good as new again I'm sure the owner is very happy as well I would like to see the sonic statue one day when I go to Japan that will be amazing I'm sure everybody agrees with me from your biggest fan in the world Jamie.
I never clicked on a video so quickly
yeah right

the people who restored it during the heatwave are both fucking madmans and bloody legends at the same time.

This whole story restored my faith in humanity
I'm glad, that this iconic SEGA statue finally was restored! ♥
Sonic is my favourite game character
Same
Mine too!
Such a fantastic ending to an great story! This community is amazing!
The Kotera family rocks! They definitely deserve a shout out in a sonic game
I would love to see things like this just randomly placed around the world.
Like, you're just driving around and "Whoa, it's a Sonic statue! Cool!!"
If this statue was anywhere else except Japan... it would’ve been stolen long ago.
very cool !! great work .
40 degrees is perfect for arcylic and spray painting. You can go nuts with fast drying paint at that temperature. I wish there where more around the world at some more safe places. Maybe someone with more reach can spark interest in the 3d printing community for a project like this on twitter.
That mesh is used to hold plaster or bondo and the substance is most likely very strong. They would need to smooth it out by sanding it, the paint also would need sanded down possibly by a sand blaster. Once the painted surface is no longer smooth and is rough enough it is primed before painting.
What if we kissed at the Sonic statue? 😳😳😳
Wanna go😳😳😳
Lol uwu
What's the source of your pfp?
Thats very gay

*Badnik mechanic helped make a good future for this sonic statue*
Ngl I'm so proud in you for being able to get word around and get this fixed.
And to the owners take care of it please and thanks for saving it!
That sonic statue is a national treasure
This is incredible the fact that he didn’t want nobody to pay or help him it’s very honorable i hope to maybe one day go and see it myself perhaps in the future but SEGA should take note and really thank them this is super sweet of them and its awesome to see him reach out to yeah as well it just goes to show you that the sonic Community is strong and when United anything is possible
I was fine until the owners said hi and gave all those restoration photos I cried from joy.
What an honor for them to contact you about the restoration and hope you get the chance to visit the statue as I would love to see the complete story on this Sonic statue. ^=^
*updated comment*
My family shared one of those pictures when the last video was release.
Wait what!😃
It occurs to me that if it weren't for the original photos of this statue being discovered, and that one SEGAWORLD ad that had the statue in it, we would have never known of the existence of this statue. How many Sonic statues exist out there that we don't know about, waiting to be discovered if it's not already too late for them.
I learned about this statue just a year ago and it was kinda sad seeing a piece of history rotting away..I am sooo happy to see the statue restored !!!
rip his nose
it never fully grew back
this reminds me of sonic generations when the world goes all white
Im still a bit afraid that this statue is still on the middle of the wild but im sure the family will take good care of it is a beautiful statue
I've absolutely loved following this story
So amazing to see it restored. Also so good to see Sonic’s definitive design preserved like this. Long live the Kotera’s ❤️🇯🇵
I expected a greenscreen joke about going in 2020 at the end.
The statue is made of fiberglass and resin. The repairs, although impromptu and in the elements, the results look awesome.
Now that family will have a long time tradition to fix that statue for ages to come.
This statue looks so cool! I'm glad that they fixed it!
It's ashame that the sally acorn and Sonic statute can't be rescued like this one has... 😓
to be honest that one is probably gone
It depends on the condition
What happened to it? Never heard of it and now I'm curious
@@blackrose1293 it's basically a Sega world statue that ended up in a junkyard rotting away but the owner is a hoarder and won't sell it
@@WalterBennett oof-
im glad you did videos on this statue i'm a big sonic fan and until i saw your videos on the statue i never knew it existed so thanks to you i know a little more history around sonic and i just came across this video and i couldn't pass it up cause i wanted to know more so thank you for staying up to date on the statue and a major big thanks to Masahiro Kotera and his family for restoring a big part of sonic history and i hope you get to see the statue soon and if ya could it would be great if you would do a video of you visiting it cause id love to see that video and good luck on getting tickets for it and thanks for doing the videos on the sonic statue.
You should check out my other videos if you like Sonic... there's quite a lot.
They should make some kind of tarp or covering over it, to better protect it from the elements.
But it's honestly really cool to see it restored like that!
Gotta love the dedication of these guys. Working in such a hot day and restoring this peice of gaming history. Mad respect
Next video:The creator of Mario call me
Thats awesome! Wonderful video!
Looks like Sonic is hopefully going to have a wonderful celebration.
Ma-sa-hero, not mashy-hero! omg lol
Yeah I don't get why he keeps adding that "sha" sound when he says the name. xD Japanese words are not hard to pronounce, really. They only have 5 vowel sounds (as opposed to 20 in English) and stuff is pronounced the same way it's written, with no emphasis on a syllable. There's a couple sticking points (learning the right "r" sound that doesn't exist in English, the consonant in "tsu", learning to drop the vowel a bit in trailing "u") but it's pretty easy. 90% of the pronunciation is near-identical to Spanish.
Everyone donate to the patreon so he can see the statue!
Even though they refused any crowd funding, I can't help but think if he had a sudden surge of donations/subscribers, he'd try offer the excess to the family after seeing the statue
I literally watch this video every day 😅 it’s very well done. You just keep me coming back for more .
I've never messed with plastic, but my dad's a big handyman carpenter repair guy type. The material put over the mesh on the underarm and the board looks like a type of plaster, expanding and reinforcing the material.
The kuckles sticker is gone on the bottom.
I know right! It's honestly such a large and disappointing oversight.
@@bababooty928 honestly, it had to be done. As said in the video, the owner said it was too risky to lower the statue to remove the supports, so they just re-painted the board completely and removed the front Sonic & Knuckles sticker.
I dunno why, but I find it immensely amusing it appears they painted his legs peach before fixing it to blue-
It's really awesome it's fixed now though!!
2020 truly was the best year for Sonic.
So the photo was the progress, that’s a relief. For those that don’t know, badnik posted on his community page the thumbnail and people were getting worried that the statue was once again left but that’s not the case.
Masahiro Sakurai: wait,the second
That's weird I just searched for this video
shut up
I see this comments so many times nobody cares if you search for this
@CKFORBES 2 u needs to shut up I dident do anything
How awesome that the statue got restored and even MORE awesome they got in touch with you!
Visiting the Sonic statue is defenitely going on my bucket list now!!
The mesh is used for drywall mud usually, let it dry out (thanks to the temperature of the day the mud dried pretty quick) sanded it down and painted over it
I love this sonic statue but idk why but these types of things creep me out. A lost statue is in the mountains
For those of you who don’t know what sega Sammy is sega Sammy is the parent company of Sega
One of the best follow-ups ever! Thank you for all the hard work you've put into this mystery!
Thank you Mr. Kotera, you did an amazing job and are amazing for restoring an old statue, and not even having any kind of payment from anyone!
YASS!! XDDD
4:57 im not sure about that leg part lol
When you first post about the sculpture was amazing and I think it’s super awesome that they rebuild it
Been waiting for this video
Arigato Kotera-san for this lovely restoration. Also to badnik mechanic here on RUclips for making this and statue come to light for restoring for future generations to see. I'd love to see it myself one day.
That’s what I call dedication man! It’s great to see that statue back to it’s former glory!
This is a fantastic happy conclusion. I was so overjoyed to see this happen. Thank you to the family for repairing it and providing these pictures.
I don't know if you'll get to read this, but thank you Kotera Masahiro! You've made so much people happy.
Greetings from Mexico.
I don't know about all of you...but in the next Sonic movie, I'd like to see Sonic on a snowboard doing THIS pose. That would be such a cool homage to this real life statue.
I'm no expert, but that mesh thing in the repair is a pretty common thing.
You take a mesh, usually made of cloth (though for some things, such as patching concrete, metal mesh can be used), place it over a crack, then you put plaster (or an epoxy) over the mesh. Then you sand it down to a smooth surface before applying primer and painting.
This helps the patching material hold its shape until it dries/cures, preventing the plaster from just falling into the crack, we well as providing a bit more structural integrity to the finished product.
If you ever need a hole in a wall patched, especially drywall walls, then this is likely how it will be repaired.
Glad to see something positive come out of 2020. You deserve a ton of credit for getting this moving!
Now hopefully there's NO wildfires around there....
