  • This video shows several different solutions to the low and/or rough idle that many vehicles have. Solutions will vary from vehicle to vehicle. This just happens to be a Mercedes SLK230 and the problem was the gas pedal position sensor, but other vehicles or even this vehicle may have the same symptoms but have a different solution.
    Here's a free copy of my book in pdf down load from my drop box!

    1. Ignition coils
    2. Coil wires and connectors
    3. Egr vacuum switching solenoid valve
    4. Gas pedal position sensor (drive by wire throttle control)

Had the same experience trying to remedy a front end rattle that is still there. Frustrating would be an understatement. However it was not all bad news as a lot of them components would need replacing anyway. Let's face it, when the car is not performing, it's like a close relation getting ill. Hey Clint: Another good video from you. Nice job.
    Don't worry about changing lots of parts. It happens. Sometimes troubleshooting points to something that is not the problem, but the part is old and probably needs replacing anyway. Stuff happens. I know, done it myself.
    I also have an R170 MB. And I am having some problems as well.
    Questions: Do you have a MB Service Manual? So far, I did not get one. YET. Because some of this maintenance or parts changing really needs some manual or instructions. Any recommendations on which manual to get for a similar MB?
    Also it was very good that you listed your where you got your parts and tools.
    What do you recommend for good quality spark plug wires? (besides the dealer $$$$). NGK? Bosch? Warner?
    How about your coils (which brand do you recommend)? Or spark plugs?
    My 2004 SLK is NOT passing inspection right now. Trying to find my problem within the next 3 weeks or so.
    Thanks.

    are you applying the dielectric grease on all the connectors or on the ones having contact with the spark plugs?

    • @Engineerboy100
      @Engineerboy100  5 лет назад +1

      Dielectric grease does not go on the metal part of the connector, its job is to insulate, lubricate and protect from corrosion. The insulation component of dielectric grease is to keep stray current from arching and shorting to grounds. So put it on all rubber portions of our connectors that attach to the plugs or the coils and get as little on the actual metal as possible. The lubrication component is to make is easier to remove later so the rubber doesn't stick to the plug or coil when you want to take the wires off.

And in the road for more than 30 min I’ll start stalking at red lights. To keep it from stalling I have to keep one foot on the gas to keep it at 1k rpm, which works great. I just changed out the fuel pumps on my old S320, and was about to rewire the ETA (electronic Throttle Actuator) harness but when I cut into it it looks perfect. Good job. So is the throttle pedal pulling from this steel cable and the sensor is that part you replace at the moment instead of being embedded on the pedal?

    • @Engineerboy100

      I don't understand your question exactly...

    • @fulanito494
      @fulanito494 6 лет назад +2

      In most modern cars, the throttle pedal position sensor is on the pedal assembly itself, so there is not steel cable going from the pedal to the engine compartment, thus eliminating some of the parts. My question was if this sensor you have replaced at the end is the position sensor and it is moved by the throttle pedal. I think that's the case.

It drives without any problems, but when I stop, the engine keeps reving between 500 and 1000 rpm and the car is shaking, not too much but it is not normal. It doesn´t turn off though. • @Engineerboy100
      @Engineerboy100  4 года назад

      Yes it can be saved. The engines on these cars are bullet proof. How much will it cost, well that depends on two things, 1. how honest your mechanic is and 2. How good your mechanic is. for those two reasons, I am my mechanic. the revving could be a vacuum leak or the throttle just needs to be reset. I would start with resetting the throttle. Just turn the key on without turning on the engine. Leave it for 5 minutes or so then turn the key off and remove it. Then start the car and take if for a test drive. That might fix it.

      Not familiar with the electric throttle peddle models, the slk230 is drive by wire.

      Hey thanks for replying. So I got the car from my father with about 62k miles on it and has about 88k right now and he babied it. I try to lol. Yeah it's a tick tick tick only when I turn right like in my parking lot at my apartment going that speed and always have to take a right to get in my spot. That's when it's the loudest but what I was saying about my dad giving me the car I put some aftermarket wheels on it after the fact and it just made me think maybe something is getting caught somewhere in there between the break in the wheel I don't know I don't feel like doing anything to the steering and it's been doing it for quite some time now it has not gotten any worse just been consistent. I'll mention that to somebody when I have them check it out then I don't hear it when I'm going down the road so it just threw me for a loop thanks again for the info I'll have it checked out

    This is a bit sad because of all the money spent on unnecessary repairs... May be better to pay dearly $150 for diagnostic and then enjoy playing with your toy - at least you get the proper reward of what making repairs to what is broken

    The idle in P is too high. It should be around 750 and not 1000. Almost every 230K is shaking a little bit at idle. I think that's pretty normal for a supercharged engine back in the 90s.

    • @Engineerboy100
      @Engineerboy100  4 года назад

      Nope, a high or rough idle in an slk230 is not normal. My wifes 1999 SLK230 idles perfectly smooth. If it is not idling correctly, something is wrong. you are correct, idle should be around 750 rpm.

    Man I have the same engine and the coils are very different. You have some thick cables to your coils like in old american junky cars. Mine has lots of small little wires that go to a connector and that connector enters the coil. That's it. On the other hand me car is also "German Edition" so it may different from Europe to your country (I suppose USA?). I'm having a rough idle problem and nobody can figure it out man. I'm so upset. I changed the plugs, is not giving me a misfire error and the check engine indicator doesn't turn on anymore, but clearly has some serious problem while in idle. I always get scared that will engine will stop in the middle of heavy traffic blocking everybody and me end up iin prison. Is very scary. A lot of people said: well if the computer doesn't have any error then we cannot make a diagnose. Bullshit. How about those ECU and all computer were invented? Cars were running with fucked up idles right? And they could be fixed. Also the engine is so fucking busy in there, you can barely stick two fingers here and there. I woulld have loved to chec for air leaks.
