One of the most hated players of all-time and he was not fearless. He used to high stick people and then hide behind Schult or Dupont. He was a coward.
It is said that every team hated Clarke. But every team wanted him on their roster. It was well known that "Clarke will do anything to win." Howie Meeker remarked, "He wasn't the biggest guy in the league. He didn't skate faster than anyone else, he didn't shoot harder than anyone else. But what a helluva hockey player he was!"
The game is much more dangerous today than it was back in the 1970's. How many players were taken off of the ice on stretchers? Only one that I can remember and that was Barry Ashby , Bobby Clarke's teammate and that was because of getting hit in the eye with a slapshot, not a check or a fight. Since the rules changes instituted by Garry ( I've never played hockey) Bettman there has been at least over 20 players taken off of the ice on stretchers , one of them with a broken neck and none of them from fights. The fighting was nearly as dangerous as the dirty open ice hits of the 2000's. In addition to the changes in the fighting penalties , taking the two line offsides out of the game allowed higher speed open ice hits that caused a lot more serious injuries than fights ever did. I think the game would be much better off going back to the old rules and getting rid of Mr. Bettman.
One of dirtiest players I’ve seen play. I’ve been watching hockey since 1970. He loved antagonize other players then run and hide behind his teammates.
I wish someone would post the Hockey Night in Canada telecast from November 23, 1974, when he speared Rod Seiling of the Maple Leafs and then started punching him. At least he got majors for spearing and fighting, although Seiling wrongly received a fighting major. Courageous Bill Barber received a game misconduct for being the third man in the "fight."
The stick work by the Russians was ongoing. The European refs were handing out penalties like candy to the Canadians. Clark was a stick man, not the only one. Orr tuned him up one game.
1 ref in those days missed most stuff . You should have seen Clarky's ankles after some games . Not pretty . Some fools could suggest Gordy was was a s**t disturbed too . Both tough and the best ever at the game . There's always a few that just don't know what they are talking about .
@@danricard2450 The game was vastly different, removing the offside pass changed everything. I do not agree one ref missed most things. If you are suggesting I do not know what I am talking about, you have no clue what I know about the game. Clark was a highly skilled player who was a "stick man" If you played the game in the 60's and 70's you would understand what that meant. He rarely fought as he had his buddies do that for him. He had lots of company in that department. You can think what you want, having coached kids who went first round in the draft I will rest easy with my opinions.
Whoever put this together is a Johnny come B lately to the sport of hockey. Random photos of teams that have nothing to do with Clarke and and irritating AI voice.
I once read "he who lives by the sword, shall die by the sword." So, if you do something so blatant, never complain when it is done to you, because when you do something like that, as a player I would have gone out of my way to do the same thing to that player.
You forget that Clark was above all a superb hockey player , captain and leader. He was a small guy with a fearless bravado. The attack on Karmalov was maybe calculated to help Canada win the series. Such brutalities have happened often enough in hockey not to make it unusual. Now there is more sanctions for such misdeeds in suspensions. Gordie Howe Mr Hockey was known for his brutal elbows. But that was incidental to their greatness as hockey players.
Don’t try and justify Clarke’s dirty play by saying that he was fearless, and would do anything to win. What ever happened to the old philosophy that “it’s not whether you win or lose. It’s how you play the game that is most important.” A sport should not condone incapacitating opposing players like Scott Stevens, Chris Neil, and other goons did. Thanks to Stevens all hockey fans lost the pleasure of watching talented players like Paul Kariya and Eric Lindros. Yet these same people freak out about hits like the one Ulf Samuelson dished out to Cam Neely. That hit was less blatant that Clarke’s on Kharlamov
I would urge ANY up and coming hockey player to pattern themselves after the play of #16 Bobby Clarke. I was there in Buffalo in 74-75 and watched the spectacle of the Broad Street Bullies, the fog game, I even remember the beautiful voice of Kate Smith as she sang. Downfall of Bobby Clarke, SURELY YOU JEST.
His commitment was second to none and is to be commended. But the intimidation, stick work, and unsportsmanlike conduct of him and his team is a disgrace to professional ice hockey. It is a sad reflection of the 70s. A team of skilled goons and thugs for example winning the 1975 Stanley Cup over a very skilled and classy Buffalo Sabres is deplorable- but then again the outstanding net minding of the sensational Bernie Parent may have won them the Cup without the thuggery.
I am a Bruin fan but I will defend Bobby Clarke. He was good for the game. I watched the Summit series live, Ok the slash on Kharlamov was pure intent to injure. You covered that but why don't you discuss all the spearing and kicking with intent to cut the Canadian legs by the russians???????? And all that began way before Game 6. You need if your going to report on a story include all the context.
He was a coward that hid behind his pack of teammates that individually would never be in the league. The only real stars were Leach,Parent and Bill "the diver"Barber. Fred Shero as a HOF coach is a joke.
During the Flyers two year reign as Stanley Cup champions the Flyers went down to Atlanta. Fred Shero stepped outside of his hotel. A man mugged him in the dark. I wonder if that was karma.
By the way Bobby Clarke never had a " Downfall" .

Clarke was a leader on his team many other players also played that style in that era.

Amen , Bettman has done more damage to hockey than any player ever has

Amen to that

Probably my favourite player of all time but please spell "Clarke" with an e.

Definitely one of the best in his era !!! Loved watching him play even though I was a Toronto fan

Bullshit. He had lots of fights. I think maybe you we’re watching a Korean league

clarke was willing to introduce evil into his game. No way he should be celebrated.
Go snuggle with your Peggy Fleming doll
Deliberately hurting someone with a two handed slash , is totally unsportsmanlike, criminal, Clarke was a " dirty player " .
Woke pussy
Crybaby 😫😫😫 😂😂😂
That Soviet team spat, kicked & speared the Canadian players
Yes. Nobody says anything about that.
only after they lost respect for these thugs.

best leader in any sport the Russian baby played game 8 and his ankle was not broken,HHOF Clarke was MVP twice and won the Cup twice no downfall here
Clarke's legacy - one of the greatest leaders the NHL has ever seen -
Wilf Paiement was a dirtier player, imo.
Dennis Polonich would agree with you

Hate this guy's game. He's a sore loser, not a man.
