For those who don’t know, Dylan Larkin suffered a bad back/neck injury a few years ago that had him in a brace and recovering for much of the offseason. Then soon after he came back from that injury early in the 2021 season, Mathieu Joseph dangerously cross checked Larkin up high near the neck into the boards. Larkin punched him and was suspended for 1 or 2 games. No penalty to Joseph. Now a few years later, Joseph hits Larkin high again injures him. To me this looks like a dangerous and unnecessary hit/punch directed to larkins neck. Seems like Joseph had the opportunity to not check Larkin in the head and neck

I’m a Sabres fan and I agree how does Joseph not get a penalty or ejected as well, same cross check to the head. We had Eric Robinson Board and injure Justin Barron a few games ago and he got ejected. Prayers for Larkin, hope he recovers quick 🙏.

Dr. Brian Sutterer did an analysis of this. His hypothesis was a case of carotid sinus hypersensitivity. Essentially, the pressure of the contact on the neck was mistaken for actual blood pressure by the body. The response is a rapid drop of blood pressure, which can knock you out.

Not only that. Larkin hits the ice face first as well, so the initial shock from whiplash plus probably badly bruised or broken nose and possible concussion. He was down and out cold almost instantly.
What amazes me that Joseph only got 2 for roughing. He clearly crosschecked Larkin above the shoulders and caused an injury to a player, and even as I don't think it was intentional at all, it should be five minutes major in my opinion.
The rulebook says that player must be in control of his stick at all times. We could say that he was indeed in control of his stick and wanted to make rough defensive play, but he as a player must know that the neck and head are off limits.

If anyone has ever fought before...it was Kelly right hand that hits Larkin's chin - basically hitting the good night button for some people. The jaw acts as a lever to torque the head when the blow has a lateral component. If the blow is straight on, then the base of the skull is wrenched backwards. Both types of motion can crumple or twist the brainstem at the bottom of the brain or it can cause the brain to "bounce around". That was very hard to watch as you never want to see any player motionless. Wish a speedy recovery to Larkin.

Damn, at 1st I thought Larkin looks like he’s made of glass. Initially it looks like a light tap from behind from Joseph and it didn’t even look bad. It was when they finally showed from the opposite side where you see what happened. That shove from Joseph lead Larkin’s head to move forward towards Kelly right hand which clipped Larkin’s jaw and then it was lights out! He was KO’d by Kelly’s right hand. I wouldn’t even call that a penalty. It was just an unfortunate series of events of physicality and Larkin’s head was just in a bad spot to be trapped by the hands Joseph & Kelly. In the end he took an accidental shot to the jaw and that knocked him out.

I'm pretty sure it was 27's fist to the chin that knocked him out. 21 hits him in the back of the neck/head, forcing his head right into the oncoming fist of 27. It was a combo platter, but the finisher was 27, not 21.

12 minutes of broadcast time and a ton of focus on Joseph with absolutely no credit given to him for keeping the area clear and calling the trainer over and showing concern as Larkin left the ice.
I don't have a rooting interest in either of these teams. I hope Larkin is fine and I hope people recognize how classy Joseph was after the injury, which--as best I can tell--was more or less caused by heat of the moment hockey and bad luck.
Because yeah: we keep seeing these situations where a player is down and there's too little concern for their safety while tempers flare. For an opposing player to recognize the situation and keep everyone away is something that I think we should commend.
