1. Uttered threats 2. brought guns across the border 3. Stored his guns at a address different then where they were on his licence 4. stored his guns in the open where they could be stolen I feel bad for the guy, but he did sort of bring it upon himself with the silly things he did.
Ya it's easy to blame Ian for all the problems that happened to him and to some degree you would be right, however addiction changes a person and if you've not suffered addiction you would never know. I believe the stint in jail was divine intervention to save his life.

Enjoyed watching Ian play for the Leafs. Damn shame that his story isn’t unlike many other pro athletes. Clubs turn a bit of a blind eye at what the players are doing until they think it may affect them then they push them along. I once had a run in with a player from the Argo’s who was obviously on a path of destruction. About five years later he was my helper on my truck. He never recognized me but I knew exactly who he was. Never said a word to him about that day. He used to tell me about when he played pro ball. Life con be fickle.

Just watched this and that back to back. Ian seems to have left out his multiple relapses. Being in jail was the first time he realized he had an addiction problem conflicts with Tess' story. Not picking sides, but you have to know that Westhead is a solid journalist. Addicts also tend to lie or tell their 'version' of events. Feel for the guy, but it sounds like his legal battles may have just saved his life in the long run. Wish him the best and that he stays involved with his children as that is what will keep his perspective of what is important in life.
@@akashx26I agree with you. As a former alcoholic and former opiate addict, I can attest that we tend to lessen our responsibility in situations. In description about the road rage incident, he was the one who called for the guy to pull over and feels he still is in the right. He instigated it, come on. I feel bad, but he should have kept driving and now he should admit he made a huge mistake. He still doesn’t seem to accept complete responsibility for his actions. You have to own it, to conquer it.
Ian White is a menace. Glad he got his just due. He can play the victim all he wants but he's not telling the whole truth. Lot of gullable people here believe him.
I'll watch the full podcast, interesting. I'm thinking the substance problems (drugs primarily) are what led to this. I believe he's basically telling the truth. His tone and demeanor are obviously things that did escalate these situations. I wish him well. ✌
Driving around on Fentanyl, tries to get a middle aged dude to fight him after cutting HIM off in order to "defend my turf". Youre a Father with "3 or 4" guns laying around your Cottage "in the sticks" near Kenora of all places. "simply guns being at the wrong address" is not an excuse when kids break into your cottage and steal your guns. Tell a Mother of a dead kid in Winnipeg shot with one of your guns. You say prime of your hockey career except you spent the last "5 months partying and doing Fentynal" . To be fair, your stupidity could have cost multiple lives and ruined people who actually care more than just themselves. The ONLY good thing that happened to you was going to Jail. You said it yourself, "you would not have known you were addicted". It sounds like you may be in for another stay if you are blaming anyone other than yourself in my humble opinion.
That comment sounded anything but humble. Must be nice being so perfect to be able to judge others whom have the courage to tell a story about a time in their life when they were struggling…
@@DavidPrice-qu2yc No, I am so imperfect that I have had to do that very thing. He knows what he's doing as I'm sure he's spent quite a bit of tiime in whats called "group". He also knows that putting blame on other for things you have done to yourself is called "stinking thinking" and set's his recovery back. Sounds like Hockey is more importrant than mental health and that should be the first issue tackled.

Canada has zero to do with the judicial system. Anywhere u go on this planet the Judicial system is a joke but you’d think some Countries ie Canada would actually serve the people to protect against harmful citizens as opposed to a bunch of hypocrites doing good people wrong. The funny part is, as in this case with the Lawyer trying to throw the book at Ian believes her actions were justified. For all people here, the universe has the perfect accounting system so u really have to be cognizant of how you treat others as one day u will get it in turn. PS: Loved Ian as a Leaf!❤ Go Buds!

As my old man is a hunter with his hunting license. He owns a Enfield or a Springfield no scope & bonus a crossbow! There's hunting camps all over Ontario I just never knew the RCMP were that power hungry over more successful people. Even tho in the States they pay no tax but Canada we do. Just let the guy merge people!! Come on. Quit being idiots on the road and have some damn courtesy for others. If buddy in the car that started it all really is connected to law enforcement that should be investigated!!!
You are being disingenuous. Not all the charges are related to "registration formalities". Ian clearly did not store his guns safely and that is pretty scary when 1) those guns are owned by someone with addiction issues at the time, and 2) he has small children. And I think it was very naive of Ian to think he did not need to declare an upgraded bb gun that sounds like was decked out with all the bells and whistles when crossing the border into Canada. I am a Flames fan and really admired Ian when he was in Calgary for being such a gritty defenceman despite his size. I am happy Ian has been able to achieve sobriety and hopefully he can stay sober the rest of his life. I wish him all the success with his family, his coaching, and hockey school.
Simple Friday evening call investigating a hit and run from a white SUV that wasn't him. 50 cop cars show up to his house including a police helicopter, with a warrant to search his house for guns and then search his cabin. What part of the story am I missing here?

He was on their radar having a prior road side altercation leading to his arrest. The primary issue is that he has a restricted firearms license. The secondary issue is that he let his license expire and his guns were properly registered with the government. If he was able to even change the address without issue is a whole different story. With this situation in place the RCMP went to his house with a search warrant to find the guns, the hit and run investigation that you're caught up on was a lie. The lie was used to find out whether he was at home and to make sure they could execute their search warrant. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

I had the exact same thing happen to me but they claimed I pointed a gun at them. Luckily I didn't have a gun and they had to let me go knowing he was lying.

Canadian gun laws are insane. All while those that make them rely on them for their own protection. Same as the climate issues. If you are rich you can fly all over the country and preach at others about how they are the polluters and tax them for it.

This guys a sociopath. Take a shred of responsibility for your own behaviour. Blaming everyone else for all his fuck ups. Promising player at one point, stunning lack of accountability though.
Loved Ian as a player. Even though I hate the fact he scored the winning goal for the USA Juniors when they played the Canadian Juniors during the gold medal game. However the story does seem a bit suspicious. Maybe Ian just didn’t explain it thorough enough but there seems to be something missing in the story as to how we got from a confrontation in a road rage incident to search warrants at his house. It does seem that the guy he road raged with either lied about the incident and used his authority within the police force to fabricate the threats charge or Ian isn’t telling the whole truth. Possibly his addiction to drugs has affected his memory. There is something definitely missing in the story as to how the police got a search warrant for his weapons. I do know the court would most likely have ordered him to surrender his firearms while he was awaiting the assault charges. If he failed or refused to do this the police would have had to act. I am a gun owner in Canada with a licence that gives me the authority to possess the most restrictive firearms in Canada. It is true Canadian gun laws are more restrictive than those in the USA but in my opinion that is a good thing. It is probably one of the reasons we are not experiencing the lunacy of gun problems like the USA. In Canada all firearms must be locked in a safe and the ammunition must also be secured separately. Our handgun laws are even more regulated and restrictive requiring handguns to be securely stored and the police’s authority every time you transport a handgun from your home. If you move you must advise the police of the new address. In Canada any weapon capable of firing a projectile faster than 500 feet per second is considered a firearm and is subject to the firearm laws. So pellet guns which can now shoot pellets over 1500 feet per second are firearms. I know this sounds strange considering “it’s only a pellet gun” but pellet guns are being used to hunt deer in some locations. Just listening to Ian it seems he may have committed several gun offences in Canada. The excuse that it was only a pellet gun or .22, or, he didn’t know, would not cut the mustard here in Canada. Gun laws are taken very seriously in Canada. Let me tell you when I have travelled to the US with my guns I make sure I know and abide by all the laws. You would be a fool not to do so. Regardless, I wish Ian the best moving forward and am glad to see that he is now clean.

I liked Ian White when he played for Toronto, and I think Canadian gun laws are absolutely RIDICULOUS at this point, but much of this story didn't add up. 27 years? In Canada? No. Cops targeting a well-known hockey player for no apparent reason? No. The Crown trying to hold that same person for no apparent reason while everyone else is let out on bail? Come on. Then, he mentioned the addiction issues... now it makes more sense. I hope he gets the help he needs to turn his life around, he has so much potential, and seems like a good enough guy.

Looks like Ian bruised the ego of someone connected to law enforcement. But seriously, do we want someone with guns and addiction issues. All’s well that ends well. What is it they say about truck drivers?
5:00 I like how he cut someone off (knowingly) and still described it as somehow being the other person's fault. Watching the rest of the video, I can see that this is just a dude who cannot accept the fact that he is responsible for the bad things he has done (later on he blames the prosecutor for charging him rather than saying "yeah I broke the law").
Guilty until u prove yourself innocent, that’s how our system works, most likely the guy he cut off had some police powers, should be able to get the name but as I understand from my own case that cost 10k for a lawyer only to get thrown out.. should get ur money back automatically. I also want my fingerprints deleted lol, followed Ian’s career and played against him at a young age, I always wondered why he didn’t make the Jets thought it was a perfect fit thanks for this video explains a lot.
Jets would have been the perfect fit. Thanks for watching man, if you liked the clip you should check out the full length podcast episode we did! It’s on the main channel ;)
You seem to have missed the part where he violated numerous gun laws. Whether you agree with those gun laws is another matter but it seems he's learned a valuable lesson the hard way. Never talk to cops without your lawyer present. On the upside it sounds like this started him on a path to sobriety.
@@jonfox4022 okay so I live in the arctic every house is breaking your gun laws, nobody ever gets charged..hum seems like a double standard wouldn’t you say
Yeah but the Canadian police suck even more. They let murders go unsolved 'cuz they don't care but will do stupid things like this...'cuz they don't know how to actually police.

A really good undersized RD. He had alcohol problems in Toronto & had been charged with impaired driving at one point. He got caught driving while under suspension for that offence, so he was already familiar with law enforcement & lawyers. Sadly his substance abuse issues cost him his marriage. Why he didn't get into the NHLPA's player assistance program is on him. That would have possibly saved his career & marriage. I don't think he's a bad person, just a guy who didn't deal with serious issues that needed fixing when he should have. Getting arrested might have saved his life. I'm not sure he really gets it as his tone sounds like he blames the police for the end of his career. You have to be accountable for the things you do. Self-inflicted IMO.

@@akashx26I agree with you. As a former alcoholic and former opiate addict, I can attest that we tend to lessen our responsibility in situations. In description about the road rage incident, he was the one who called for the guy to pull over and feels he still is in the right. He instigated it, come on.

@@SnootchieBootchies dumb law anyway. Locked guns aren't a good spot to be able to get to them for protection.

Come on.

I wonder if he ever posted anything online regarding political views that were eyeballed by a certain government leader. After listening to Jordan Peterson’s story it might be plausible.

Who drives hours to buy chewing tobacco for one. Two, it feels like he minimizes his part of the story pretty significantly. I was also wired to down and did a bid for firearms in Alberta. I can empathize with his story. Sad

Live an hour south and you would've had any problems at all. ND has great gun laws. Can drive around with a gun in your lap and keep them all under your couch at home if you want to, at either house you own.

Somehow this story sounds far too real. Had this guy ever been charged with anything?
If no, this is such BS. They should ALL the fired for doing this.
If this guy had a previous record, then no pity.
