Ian is one of the most authentic people I’ve met, he’s open and honest about his life and experiences..young players can learn a lot from this guy and his story
Hey thanks for watching the clip man! You should check out our full episode with Ian. It's on the main podcast channel. I'd love to have you as a weekly viewer and here what you think! :) have a great day!
This story is clearly mistitled. I know M. Babcock had some major issue's of poor treatment of players, but nothing so far shows "maliciousness". Alcoholism is a disease. He clearly had substance abuse issues. I find it almost disturbing that he implies alcohol helped his game. I'm glad he is telling his cautionary tale which might help others. I have mixed feelings. Part of me feels sorry for him, part of me is disgusted he pissed away a career so many can only dream of.
Alcoholics sometimes reach a place where they perform better drunk than they do sober. Because when you’re sober (and you haven’t adjusted to a sober existence) you’re just brimming with anxiety. You can’t get into a focused headspace. Alcohol can soothe that.
@@jon8004 I find it hard to believe too many Doctors, physio's or sports trainers would agree with you that ANYONE in professional sports would perform BETTER when drunk than sober. Anxiety is not the same as being inebriated.
@@SweetLou15 You've misunderstood me (or I communicated poorly). The healthy, fully sober version of an athlete is going to perform better than the drunk version. But if that athlete is an alcoholic, the transitional phase of sobriety can be deeply disruptive and painful, creating so much anxiety that they'll actually perform better with alcohol in their system because they're more regulated in that state. Also, sometimes alcoholism can be a crude form of self-medication for undiagnosed problems or disorders that need real medical treatment. Alcohol can calm those things, and when a player like that stops drinking, their real clinical problems bubble to the surface. It's complicated. But all things being equal, you're right.
Yeah it’s a bit of a red herring because Ian seems to have done it to himself. He was a good serviceable d in Toronto but I never knew his background. Tough luck I guess but having played 500+ games in the big show is a pretty good achievement.
@streetdog75 Babcock is a very successful coach. Just because you don't like him will never change that. Any story I have heard about him is coming from soft players who Babs was trying to instill a backbone in. You need a backbone to succeed in the playoffs.

I have watched several of these now and while I applaud Ian White for telling his story, I think he has a long way to go. He talks about getting in at 4 or 5 am and missing practice… but he was sitting on the bed ready to go…. Or he took a bunch of sleeping pills after a night of drinking and missed practice again and it was because you aren’t supposed to do that …. The show where he is talking about his firearms… I am a firearm owner in Canada as well … the part where he said he had all of them in a safe “ except maybe 3 “ is along the same lines where it’s not his fault and he was 7/10 compliant. That’s not how real life works. After listening to these I am thinking how talented he really must have been to play in the NHL and be hungover 24/7. I also think about how much teams looked the other way as it would be impossible not to know all of this stuff. Just sad but he is at least headed in the right direction….

I didn’t even remember Ian played for Detroit, and I’m glad I didn’t. Babcock is a cancer and I was glad to see him leave (wasn’t happy he was even brought in) Detroit and see how he eventually got what he deserved. But Ian is deflecting blame on Babs because he’s unwilling to accept responsibility for destroying his career. He’s a pathological liar, which comes with being an addict, and was never prescribed fentanyl for a skate laceration. It would be hard pressed to see Oxy even prescribed for that. Just a terrible story and listening to him drone on about how everyone else caused his problems is typical of most self inflicted addicts.

Babcock is a douche! Loved Ian White as a Leaf. I didn't know he had addiction problems. But, Babcock will not tolerate the player problems. Thanks for sharing this, I am glad to hear Ian is well.

Sad that a fella with his talent, can't take responsibility for his actions and blames everyone else for his failure..... Story of so many addicts lives
I don't. Blame Mike so much as Kenny Holland he knew what was going on. Ian was not the only victim. There was at least a dozen players and Kenny allowed it. He could have went down there and said this is the way it's going. I blame him because Mike is always gonna be a muppet
Holland was a weakling when it came to Babcock. Just look at the Modano situation where he intentionally sat him for the last game of the season so he couldn’t get his 1500 games before retiring? Such a dick move that Ken could’ve ended.
I wanted to hear the part about Babcock ending his career so I listened to the whole thing like an idiot lol. It's always someone elses fault that you're an alcoholic, substance abuser, a partier and as a whole, an irresponsible human being.... I didn't expect this to be a comedic video.

He had both hands in on ending his career. He seems to always want to put the finger of blame on everyone but him. Not sure who his agent was but they let this guy down as well.

He hunted ibex and sheep in Kyrgyzstan during a lockout with a local hunting company and run away to USA without paying for his extra ibex kill . At that time I would say he is dishonest guy nobody would believe me but I knew that he has character problems. The hunting company tried to get back money from him through his outfitter who organized his hunt in Kyrgyzstan but unsuccessfully. He promised to pay back in form of used hockey equipment for kids but he never kept his words . Mike Babcock it seems truly has character problems and dishonesty behavior.

There’s a special place in hell for Mike Babcock.
When he meets our maker, he’s not being let in through those gates. I know that as a fact

Yeeeaaa, you’re not wrong but this video has nothing to do with babs being a bad guy. This was all self inflicted…did you even watch the video?
I was a big fan of Ian White when he was on the leafs, and always wondered why detroit went bad. Having Babcock as a leafs coach basically wasted the first 2 years of marner/mathews/nylander years. Its a shame Babcock was allowed to ruin lives.
Ruin lives? Give me a break.

Ian still has 2 little kids wondering where their dad went. Never too late to man up and turn shit around with the proper help. Hopefully the “exposing” Babs is part of the recovery and not just passing the buck.. or puck.

Bad on the NHL and the Red Wings as well. If anyone had any idea that Ian White had a substance abuse problem and no one did anything to help him get help (I.e. NHL player assistance program) then shame on them

Ended his career doesn't mean that it was wrong of him to do so. That being said taking him of that pairing with Lidstrom at the time seems very Babcockian
