I've been on T for 7 months, and I have the worst acne. I did everything in the book, and it only got worse. So eventually I went to my doctor, she wrote me three different acne prescriptions, and I've seen a bit of a difference in the past month that I've been using them. Acne when on T is really complicated because a lot of times you can't really do much about it unless you treat it medically or wait it out while your hormones balance. I tried so hard to just wait it out and do what I could in the mean time, but all that did was ruin my self esteem while my skin was engulfed with painful and stubborn acne. If you can't find an over the counter method that works, talk to your doctor and see what they can do for you because trying to stick it out is ultimately more damaging in the long run. I've learned from experience.

Also change your pillow cases consistently and often. They carry a lot of your face oil and sweat which can lead to more acne. Sheets and stuff too. Just keep things you are around clean.

I've personally been using Cetaphil and it's been doing wonders for me. Also, using a facial brush to wash your face with helps a lot too so that the oils or dirt on your hands don't get into your pores.

I tried this and it helps sometimes, not always. but I take a really really hot shower. open all my pores. clean my face, my chest, and my back with something cleansing other than soap. and then when I'm done sit in the shower with cold water because your pores shut. annnnnnd it makes you warm, for those who live in cold areas.

    • @KeetunPierce

SkyNet eating dairy causes acne bc of the sugar in it called lactose. If u eat something that your body can't use it has to get rid of it, oil/grease for example. You eat that stuff and you sweat it out of your pores

Thanks for the tips. Also, I've talked with my dermatologists about Accutane. I love Accutane and I did a 5 month round pre-t and it cleared up my acne for years. However my dermatologist said that Accutane can effect how you scar for up to one whole year after stopping your treatment. If you want any surgeries in the near future she highly recommended waiting on Accutane until after all of your surgeries are done. I'm just throwing this out there because there isn't a lot online about Accutane and transguys.

I've heard that getting a bunch of cheap pillow cases and changing out for a new one every night helps. If you get 7 you only have to do laundry and wash them once a week. Also (I know you don't wear one but for anyone reading who does) wash your binders guys! I know they might be expensive and it sucks but get I had 3, one that I designated for going to the gym and swimming (because it was real stretched out) and the other two that I rotated and wore a couple days in a row and it really helped my body acne to wash them more often.

I tend to get bad acne too. For my Larp group, I had a Roman Tunic made. It looks fantastic, but the type of fabric I picked out turned out to not breathe very well. And as you know, Ty, summers are torturous in the South. I ended up developing Folliculitis all over my chest, shoulders, and back. It was one of the most annoying experiences. what's helped me is taking a shower with anti-bacterial soap as soon as I get home from the meetups.

I started getting really bad acne once I started T, so bad I went to my family doctor and he prescribed me "doxycycline," which seems to have less crazy side effects than accutane. I've taken it for months now and it's helped me tremendously. I have no complaints.

I've used Yes To Tomatoes Charcoal soap bar on my chest, back, and face, it worked great for me because I'm sensitive to certain washes so I try as much as possible to use natural products. Also try using an exfoliating scrubbing glove on your body. Drinking water and staying hydrated is key.

My acne isn't that bad but I noticed that as I'd get a new hair somewhere (usually on my face but also my chest and stomach) I'd get a pimple. I think it's that hair breaking through that aggravates the skin and then the pore goes ape shit and voila pimples. I use a facial scrub to exfoliate and it helps the hairs come in without irritating the skin as much. A friend of mine is a little further along on T than me and he does the same thing. Hope that helps!

If you use acne face washes etc make sure you moisturise straight after, when they leave you skin dry it gets more flakey (even if you don’t see it) and the skin which flaked off clogs your pores and makes the acne worse not better. This also helps prevent your skin from overcompensating

Hey Ty!! :) I typically binge watch your videos every night, and I realized I hadn't watched this one somehow. By the title, I knew that I would gain some expertise on helping my acne, but when you mentioned that you had cystic acne, I couldn't relate to you more. I've got cystic acne all over my back and shoulders, as well as occasionally on my chest. Don't even get me started on my face. I'll get one (or two) of the most painful ones in one of the worst spots every week. They take forever to go away!! :( I'm 15, and I've had them for the past three years now, and it just seems to be getting worse. I found one really odd trick that gets rid of them within a day or two. When you feel one start to come on (usually it's when I'm washing my face and I feel one forming under my skin (I'm always like ohhh shit), I always put vapo rub on it. Throughout the day, I only keep it on for about 30 minutes before washing it off, and before bed after showering and washing my face (with other various nightly routines) I'll put it on and then go to sleep. When I wake up, it's usually still on my face, so I go and wash it off. As mentioned before, it goes away within a day or two. Granted, I have no idea if it's actually medically safe, but I've been doing it for a few months now and I haven't seen any physical damage. Thank you for your tips! With love, your friendly trans brother

The struggle is real. Have you tried experimenting with your diet a lot? I found that when I cut out certain things like especially dairy & soy it helped clear up some of the acne, it just takes a bit of experimenting. My brother has also found that certain proteins he's used over the years have caused breakouts for him, so that's something as well perhaps to experiment with.
    Great video as always! :)

I used to have wicked bad acne, all through middle and high school. Now I'm 3 weeks on t, and it's already starting up again. Yay... 😑
One thing I've noticed that really helps me is staying hydrated. I drink a lot of coffee, and I used to not keep track of how much water I was having, so the combination was just awful. Not just for my acne, but my whole body in general. Now I carry a water bottle with me everywhere and drink every time I think of it, and it's done wonders for my acne. Hopefully it'll help this time around, too.
So yeah, tldr: DRINK WATER. LOTS. That's my acne tip.

Use three separate washcloths when you wash. One for your body, one for your junk and one for your face. Change them after every use. It gently exfoliates and keeps the bacteria from swapping.

  • @christinapalafox987

Oooh, yeah, gym equipment can be covered in bacteria, and being warm and sweaty after a workout can make it worse. I wonder if vitamin D levels affect acne, since he stated that sun exposure helped? I've also read that mixing organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (Braggs is a good brand, the label should read "with the mother" somewhere) with filtered water (for sensitive skin, 1:4 ratio, normal skin, 1:2, and oily skin 1:1) and using a spray bottle to apply to affected areas after bathing can return you skin to its proper pH level, which is slightly acidic- and prevents the growth of fungal organisms and bacteria that can cause acne.
Um, yeah. That's all I got. I normally try not to post so late after a video has been uploaded, but I hope these suggestions can help someone. I know acne can be pretty devastating.

For some people, moisturizing can really help acne because it can trick the skin into thinking it doesn't need to produce excess oils. I'm not sure about the body, but I know this has helped a lot of people with acne on their faces. I definitely wouldn't recommend adding more oil to the situation, so I'd go with a non-oil based moisturizer, and you can experiment around a bit with the intensity.

  • @MikuMartus

Have you tried tee tree oil before??? It's known by its benefits with acne, helping to reduce scars and oilyness. I am not trans, but i use it on myself when I have some pimples (I do not have bad acne at all, but sometimes I get some pimples) and I want to get them dry faster. That helps a lot.
You can find it in any drugstore or pharmacy. Ask there how you should use it, because some times you have to mix it with water.
Try also any cream that helps reducing sebum production or astringent products.
I hope that it helps you Ty! Let me know if so! Cheers from Spain!! 😙

The issue with trying to treat acne topically is that, like most medications, its a bandaid for the core problem. Issues with leaky gut is usually what causes acne in adults. But, the most relevant thing here is: hormones. When we go through puberty, we get tons of acne right? On HRT we are essentially going through puberty all over again. Now, e
what would exacerbate this? MORE hormones! Having a diet high in dairy (i.e. consuming pasturized dairy every day) fucks with our hormone balance really bad. Anything containing lactose will cause this, including whey protein. I notice a shocking increase of breakouts if I consume too much. I used to do whey protein shakes and eat Greek yogurt every morning and put cheese on EVERYTHING. When I moderated my lactose intake, my acne almost completely disappeared. Try it out!

Sunlight helps indeed. I dont like sunbaths, i prefer aristocratic white skin, but since i noticed that tanned skin get less acne, i tried to get a bit mor tanned skin. • @aerostorm9

    Okay, I have several tips.
The first is: No acne soap. It actually drys your skin out too much. You can use an acne scrub twice a week but no more than that. I only use Dove soap on my face and I do not have the same issues with acne that I used to have when I used an acne soap.
Second: Moisturize. If you can get Christy to help you reach your back, apply a non-perfume lotion on your back everyday after you shower. I never have had body acne growing up, but my friends always did. I started lotioning my body after showers when I was 12. I tell ya what, highly moisturized skin helps with processing oils a lot better. And plus, smooth skin feels better to the touch.
Third: This one is more of a holistic-freaks belief, but I said what the heck, I'll try anything. It is believed that store bought deodorant actually contains a form of testosterone that the aluminum used chemically in the deodorant can add to your body. It doesn't matter that it's just put on your armpit area, but the chemical can affect your entire body since everyone's body has lymph nodes right in the arm pits. So, I started making a concoction of coconut oil, arrowroot (starch is made chemically and arrowroot [a basic starch] is not), baking soda, and some great smelling essential oils. Again I saw a HUGE reduction in my facial acne once I switched over. It's easy to make, and you can make it as potent as you want so cover and absorb any sweat and body odors you need gone.
The forth is more personal, but it actually can apply to anyone with a food allergy. I am allergic to olive oil. I will break out the very next morning. It's horrible. I do not have this reaction to any other foods. I have verified this with experimentation just so I know I'm not trippin'. Anyways, it's hard to discover a food allergy especially if you eat the same things everyday, and I don't know if dermatologists test for allergy induced acne anymore. Just pay attention to what you eat. I know a person who breaks out whenever she eats strawberries, so she'll refrain from eating them and it sucks. Anyway, like I said, it's hard to figure out if you are.
Hope this helps because acne is a curse and punishes all in it's wake.

I'm on accutane and honestly the whole "it'll make you depressed" thing is really over exaggerated. I know it's different for everyone but talk to a doctor about it! :)

I actually had acne around secondary school and then in high school went away and up until the first year of college my skin was the cleanest, clearest, tightest I've had. Then, the 4th month on testosterone came and with it the WORSE acne I've seen since it didn't look like pimples anymore. On my face and around my chin and neck I had like...TUMORS. I had to go into a 1 year treatment with antibiotics for that ._. and it helped A LOT. But the acne on my chest, shoulders and specially, my back didn't go away. I don't understand.

I've had acne since I was 10 from puberty 1, T hasn't made it worse but my nose and cheeks get more sebum buildup faster. I think I'll have to start washing my face twice a day instead of once. I use a face wash, toner, and cerave moisturizer. I haven't had clear skin in almost a decade, so this is the most devastating side effect of T for me. I need to see a dermatologist fr

I totally understand why you don't want to go on Accutane. I also have depression and was lucky enough to not get worse while taking it. but I feel like it would be worse for you because it cause a lot of joint pain sometimes which was really hard on me while riding my bike and being active. I also had to wear sunscreen and chapstick constantly. but I had even more severe all over body acne than you and it cleared me the fuck up so good 👌 the side effects were shit but having painful acne was soo much worse.

  • @PercaAlannaLover

I'm not sure how it would work for body acne (I've had that problem since starting T as well), but during my first puberty I had really bad facial acne (not as bad but still some during my second now as well) and I tried pretty much everything. The only thing that helped is using castor and olive oil. You mix equal parts of each, wash your face with soap or water, then put the oil and leave it there for like five minutes before splashing your face with water again. It gets worse in the beginning because your body is over compensating by producing more oil since it's used to being dry, but after a few weeks of daily use it really does clear up.

I have always had bad acne but T really made it so much worse, I just use neutrogena exfoliating body wash, it's the only thing that has worked for me. Cost about $8 a bottle but when your despite you'll pay more.

Don't worry Ty. I am "gross" too. Cuz like everything you said in the section bout clothes...I do that too. Oops lol. Sadly I haven't even started T yet and I have alot of issues with pimples and always have. I feel like I am in never ending puberty cuz I have PCOS...and my only guess is that because of it I already have a higher level of T in my body.

Yo I got Low T and I am on Test Cyp. I switch back n forth between Dove free and clear and dial gold bar to keep my skin balanced cause I got oily face and dry body, sounded weird Lol. Anyway for the pimples don't pick at em vause you know by nlw it makes em worse. & 91% rubbing alcohol cleared my chest up and they were bad like your thigh. So try that and some guys in our fb group says Apple Cider Vinegar but I haven't tried it myself. Good Luck!!!!

Is there any possibility that you won't have acne while on T? Or every transman faces this problem?

    • @chloroxcowboy
      @chloroxcowboy 7 лет назад +8

it's the same as how some cis guys have acne while going through puberty and some don't (most get a little). As far as I know it's mostly genetic whether you'll get acne or not. I had pretty bad acne when I first went through puberty when I was like 13, and then I got some more again when I went on T at 17, but now that it's been about 2 years it's cleared up a lot.

Yes, there's always some risks. Google risks of testosterone, some will show up. One risk is you could die a few years younger (not all will, just a chance, don't let this stop anyone).

Lightning23 but as far as I understand, it's not compulsory to be on T, right? Is it possible to have just necessary surgeries and, let's say, going to the gym regularly to look masculine?

Please think twice about Accutane. One of my very close friends developed servere depression out of nowhere and then Chron's disease and had his intestines partially collapse because of it. It is not a safe medication.

Before I knew I wanted to transition I was on the pill and I didn't realise how much it helped my skin until after I stopped taking and my skin broke out so much :'c
I find my face clear up SO QUICKLY whenever I spray Lush's Tea Tree Toner on my face. Not sure that that'll be enough when/if I start on T, but atm that is my go to treatment. I'm gross too. I don't nearly change clothes or my pillow case and sheets as often as I probably should. My shoulder acne is pretty bad, but I'm not comfortable with my body so that stays hidden anyways.

I didnt know pyjamas had to be changed daily . I change it every new week , when i also change bed sheets. Yet i dont really wear pyjamas, just some t shirt and random stuff i find. On topic, when i was a guy , i never had acne , in puberty i had 1-2 tops and several on the shoulders. I am 25 y old. Sea salt is the best remedy for skin related acne. Also if you have pimples on your body, wash after exercise sweating. If your not sweating, meaning not doing fitness or w/e you boys do, wash every other day, so that you dont dry out the skin. Eating less dairy and grease helps too, also water is your friend. Screw the 2 liters of water per day.. Just try to drink 4 to 5 normal cups of water or tea. Its enough to cleanse and hydrate. Yet the problem you guys have is related to T mostly. T itself causes acne, not to mention it triggers puberty. When i started transitioning, the moment i took my tblockers spironolactone and started estrogen, i havent had a single pimple .. Anywhere. We trans women deff have it way easier on the cosmetic side. Merry Hollidays !
P.s forgot to mention , drinking brewer's yeast powder or tablets helps a lot with pimples, it cleanses the blood and is also packed with vitamins and minerals. I think its also called barm.

I was on accutane and the side affects sucked but it made my acne completely go away so it was worth it for me. But about 6 months after I got off my acne came back but not as bad, but ik a lot of ppl never get again after accutane. Overall for me personally, it was worth it but it depends on the person
