Radioactive Polynesia and Algeria: when France bombed its Colonies

- The end of World War II also marked the beginning of the atomic age, when some States launched the nuclear arms race. Initially, in the geopolitical context of the Cold War and the lack of effective international disarmament policies, countries such as the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France, and China became nuclear powers in the period from 1945 to 1964. Specifically, France conducted its tests first in Algeria between 1960 and 1966, then in Polynesia between 1966 and 1996, a total of 46 conducted in the atmosphere or underwater and 147 underground, contaminating the surrounding maritime ecosystem. While it's difficult to establish the dosage of radiation to which the inhabitants of the island countries were exposed, recently some studies, thanks to declassified military documents, have shown that the French governments of the time had underestimated the impact and magnitude of radioactive particle fallout, to the point that Polynesia has demanded multimillion-dollar compensation for the damage suffered. This, however, is not shared by every Polynesian political front. We discuss this and more in this documentary.

Thank you both for such videos.
Da algerino ti ringrazio davvero tanto per questo video.
Great video - thank you
News and movies will have you believe they're the good guys.
Yet the French wanted Algeria as metropolitan territory lol.
you wanted to say Algiers as a colony? France is Metropol
@@AlbertIsraeli the French literally tried to say Algeria was metropolitan territory
@@AlbertIsraeli France declared Algeria metropolitan in the 4th or 5th republic. It’s like a huge effort they made to keep the colony. Learn history
@@farajaraf They did'nt tried, it was considered as such, 2 millions europeans lived there
And it's still is. Lol Algeria was never independent. Just a facade, but the ones who truly rule over this territory are in Paris
Keep in mind that Reggane region served as concentration camps by the independent regime.
These same powers do not let others hold these weapons, causing instability for those who do choose their own fate.
The UNSC (the major nuclear states) in particular is incredibly exclusionary and goes against the spirit of the UN
Why would you want nukes? For what reason? 😂. Seems like you want nukes for not so good reasons.
@@redp696 Having nukes = Not getting invaded by US
@@davesprivatelounge funny how all countries the us invaded weren't democratic and didn't give a damn about human rights. So yeah, you won't be getting those nukes anytime soon ;)
@@redp696 oh yeah, because the US cares so much about human rights and isnt functionally run by corporations lol
I love threaties
👍
Certainly, current and past colonial powers must be sued and punished. The US, USSR, France, UK, Israel and other criminal states must be punished asap.
The UK tested nukes in western Australia
He showed that on the map
yea but its just the aussies so its okay
@@SeArCh4DrEaMz lol, their resilient
But France put thousands of Algerians as human shields amid the detonation of its nuclear bombs
The buyer
So did Japan. Apparently.
All the colonial powers are immune from any blame for their gross environmental and human rights abuses, murders and theft by international legal law placed deliberately by themselves for their own self-interests and immunity
I think the American and French tests in the Pasific were the worst of the lot.
usa usually tested its wapons in its territory of New Mexico
@@moumouhigi5837 well so did that and Britian with desserts in Australia but still. Nukes are awful. Especially USSR... Etc.
@@KangaKucha yeah some people still get sick or gave birth defects in Algeria and the other populated ex nuclear test sites
@@moumouhigi5837 yeah especially in Hiroshima and Nagasaki which so far makes USA they only country to use Nuke Weapons on civilian cities (war or not). Does that ever come up in news now? Nope...
Fuckwit Yankees!
Mimetic Theory....
I live in northern Nevada; we're fine.. we don't use nuclear energy (plenty of hydrothermal available), and although we live next door to nuclear weapons, we are not ill... All the radioactive mutants live in the south, in Clark county, and most of them come from California.
Russia did the same in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Turkmenistan during USSR.
Talk about that too, please!
Rip 😔
There is no nuclear test in ukraine
Uzbekistan and Ukraine? 😂😂😂 even Kazakhstan we’re few incidents
They only nuked the region of Northern Kazakhstan, around SemiPalatinsk
You can't bear it for your country crimes by justifying saying talk about russia ..you xheapo

What kind of insult is that? Do you need some advice on how to hurt people feelings? I can teach you...
However Meloni has not bombed african countries nor she will, bad comparison.
