I hear you, my wife of 20 years unexpectedly died from a mild flu just four months ago on 1/5/24. Still doesn't make sense, she just went to take a nap and didn't wake up. I've broken more than 20 bones if you count fingers and toes, had several surgeries, had over a hundred non-surgical stitches, spent close to two years on crutches if you add it up but I've never felt wounded before. This grief stuff sucks more than anything I've experienced before. Trying to explain to a special needs child that Mama is never coming home again is a type of pain that I didn't even know existed. I do hope that you are finding some peace. In an ocean of FUBAR I'm still looking for the shores of SNAFU.

Well I’m really sorry about that okay 😒☹️and I know how it feels to be lonely without our love ones, we've all lost our love ones in death one way or the other, either a spouse, child, family members, or a true friend that meant the world to us, such is life I understand how you feel but life must move on because death is inevitable no matter how hard we try! And we'll all have to face it someday, I lost my oldest daughter Annabel on February 24th 2020 during the lockdown on a car accident, and she just turned 22 on her last birthday before she got knocked down by a moving vehicle 🚗 and so unluckily for me that horrible day the driver was drunk. That was the worst and most lamentable day of my life as a single Dad raising two kid's, my 17 years old son Clark and my 4 legged 🐶 families are my everything and the reason I still keep strong, and keep going! My late wife also passed away 3 years ago from a shocking disease, I felt deeply devastated with grief, and I was so heartbroken 💔 God and time are indeed the best healers.

The doctor thinks that because they might not have experienced it themselves. People who haven’t experienced it have no idea. Talking to people who’ve been through it is more helpful than listening to doctors. Or well meaning friends or even family who frankly don’t get it. Lots of areas have group therapy sessions where you can talk to others who have lost their partners.

    • @deusvult539
      @deusvult539 Месяц назад

@@dmmcmah1 I must agree with you so strongly. I lost my soul mate of 60 years to cancer a few months ago. Unless someone (including your doctor) has gone through the loss of a spouse, he/she has only education to advise from. I believe that they can be confidently ignored - such doctors can only imagine the pain of grieving.- your peers in grief will be far more understanding as I have discovered many times.

I lost my wife to cancer a year ago (Oct 31, 2022). In this past year, I have learned a lot about grief--most of it firsthand, and this guy, Paul Hill, is a perfect example of what so many of us have experienced: academics who really don't know what they're talking about when it comes to grief. His answer to the question of, how long does grief last (3:30) is completely wrong. When you lose your spouse, that grief will last the rest of your life! You don't "move on" or "get over it." You simply get to the point where you have more good days than bad. This is why there are so few good, qualified grief therapists out there. Most of them learned from guys like this.

As a person who lost a spouse of 34 years I found flaws in this discussion. It seemed the answers and advice were very trite. Anyone who is grieving knows that grief doesn’t disappear after any specific time. It’s like a tide, it ebbs and flows. What is most difficult for older persons who are widowed is that you don’t have the same social interactions and ability to blend in with others as younger widows/widowers do. As a senior you are much more likely to be isolated. Even if you had a strong social life suddenly you’re the “odd one out”. It feels odd to be in social situations where everyone else has a partner. That wasn’t mentioned at all in this video.

It sounds like you could benefit from some counseling and maybe a group to meet with once or twice a week. Sometimes we get stuck and need some help and comfort to get us to the next plateau. It’s especially hard when we’re older as there doesn’t seem to be many programs for us. You might call your local hospice and ask them for resources. Tell them you have been suffering a long time. They can be very helpful. Please. Don’t give up. There is help and relief for your pain.

I lost my dear husband 5 months ago and each day and night without him is heart-breaking.. we were still so much in love and he also was my carer. Not that we did not have our trials but as Christian’s we were able to pray together and know the lords will. Now I am still so much in grief but also know the Lord never makes a mistake so❤ knowing that I must have His strength in all my weakness, I cry for His help every day . I need to carry on however lonely I feel.

My wife passed in June 2022 after 26 years with MS. I was her carer for almost all that time. Being a full time carer for so long significantly affected my health. I had a heart attack, 90% blocked and I had pneumonia. But I keep very well now and I am very grateful for that. But I am gay and my wife knew that, and was completely accepting of me and my gay friends. I am not looking for a boyfriend/husband. Too old now. So my grieving is different. It is a great relief to no longer be in a mixed orientation marriage of 51 years.
I was a Baptist Pastor and missionary years ago but I've been told I am not welcome to even attend church. I never was. I do get lonely at times. My kids are very accepting and even said if I found a boyfriend and wanted to marry him, they would be totally accepting. That meant a lot. They live fairly closeby but are very busy with their own lives. I hardly ever see them. I do exercise a lot and walk about 11,000 steps each day.

My husband of 47 years died in 2020. Unfortunately, Covid means that group activities even group counselling are curtailed which has compounded the grieving process. The new normal, is difficult to do. I had to have trauma counselling because of the nature of my husband’s death, but this could only be done online, no group sessions, no meeting up. It was a lonely, emotional and painful experience.
Loss at this awful pandemic time makes the pain of loss even acuter.
My thoughts are with those who are going through bereavement at this very difficult time. Keep strong, we’ll get through.

For me losing her has been an incredible loss. I watched this interview with great attention. Since my wife passed I have been blogging about my feelings, my relationship with my wife, and our story. Writing feels like opening a window and talking to the world without paying attention to who is listening. Writing is emotional and it makes me remember episodes of our lives, sad and happy. After I post a story, I read and it feels like watching a movie where with my wife as the main character. Sometimes I wonder if this is healthy for me but one thing I can tell you: I love writing these stories!

She has shut all of us in the immediate family out except a half sister who doesnt help her attitude. She is clinging to so much negative things and ideas. Im her mother we enjoyed so much together before this happened. And most of the time she is angry and has never been like that before. She has a doom and gloom and talks about taking her whole life. She is set financially and has so much to look forward to with her daughters. I try to just listen. She makes so many agreious outrageously un true comments. During the months of chemo that she could still eat I would buy some for her. Now when I walk past that display it stares at me, full of cheeses still, but empty somehow.

My husband of almost 68 years died 8 months ago after years of gradually increasing, multiple health problems. After the dr told us she could do no more for him, he/we elected to go the hospice route. I know he is finally at peace and he is in heaven with the son we lost 7 years ago, but I never realized how much it would hurt my heart. I miss him so much. It was a double whammy after the loss of our son. I am going to a grief group but it still hurts so much.
It's worse in the evening, no one to share things with.

My husband passed away 4 months ago we were married 47 years. I'm so lost , my everyday routine is messed up.
I make myself get up in the morning and I struggle to do things I use to love to do is clean or go anywhere.
I'm so scared I won't be able to pay bills by myself. Night time is the worst ,I need the TV on or a light on ,just makes me feel safe and knowing that I'm not alone.
I worry about the house and when something happens to the appliances or anything outside.
I want my Husband to be Proud of me.

We have asked for there help and we have been told NO because they have there own homes and if we can’t take care of our home then we need to move closer to town. Covid made it hard when I had so much to sell and donate to shift. Lost a lot selling house in a falling market, I have hobbies but I no longer belong to anything. It's hard sorting out tech things dealing with lawyer and land agents. You don't get invited to anything being alone. Living alone I had to get lawn man in and expenses are worse lucky I saved for a rainy day. I don't sleep well lost two stone in weight. Hubby was bed ridden with cancer. It has taken its toll on my health. 46 years married and ran a business which I had to sell. It was hard leaving my handicapped son now in care.

At 84, I find that this relief is quite common among us older folks. Grief is not constant. It comes and goes, for years. Men don’t take it harder than women! They just handle it differently.

A therapist said this, and it helped me. Grief is not necessarily something you can/should/will get over. When you feel the sadness, express it and give it its due, then continue on with your day/life, until the next time. I could be my truest self with my spouse, and I miss that very much. Also, they knew my history and my family who have passed, and I did not have to explain things/those people to them. With people new to me, I want that to be the start of the relationship, I don't want to pedal backward.

My husband passed away 3 months ago from cancer. I can relate to many people here who feel lost and are experiencing extreme pain. I’m having difficulty just doing my day to day routines. He was my everything. I prefer to stay huddled in the corner of my bed. I do make an effort when friends come by and they usually say I’m doing ‘very well’. There are others who preach religion and there’s a reason blah blah blah. I prefer not to be around them. Unless that person has experienced a similar loss, it’s best I think, that they not offer platitudes or explanations. It’s just empty words to me.

Saying A memory triggers emotion for a short time is soo blunt and untrue. The raw unremitting pain that can be unleashed and last for well over three days... is not a short time and is not to dismissed lightly.

My wife of 20 years unexpectedly died just over four months ago from a mild flu. She was feeling a bit under the weather and went to take a nap, she didn't wake up, she was 52. The first month was brutal. February and March I thought I was doing well. I did the guy thing and made my checklist and attacked the problem. I read 3 books, joined a weekly spousal loss group, watched dozens of videos. We have a special needs child, so I was being strong and maintaining normalcy for him. Then in April I was organizing her clothes for her friends to pick through and donate the rest to the battered womens shelter when I came across a ratty old T-shirt that said 'Boy Mom' on it. It smelled like her, I wasn't ready for that.
She was always told that she couldn't have children so she was so excited and proud when we had our son. The smell put me back into January. I didn't realize that my checklist and dealing with things 'like a man' was a form of denial. I really thought that I was doing well. But that smell triggered memories and emotions that really kicked me where it counts. So I'm picking up the pieces again and starting from the beginning. Grief really sucks. It's probably the only thing that I've experienced that I can honestly say that I hate.
I've broken a couple of dozen bones if you include fingers and toes, I've burst an appendix, I've had multiple surgeries, spent two years on crutches, etc, but I've never felt wounded until this. Not a fan of this grief crap. Don't get me started on the widow brain stuff. Can't focus, can't remember stuff, can't think clearly, this grief stuff can byte me.

My 81-year-old mother continues to grieve her mother’s natural death. My mother’s life was very seriously abbreviated by her chronic grieving, and people are not very understanding when she seeks attention over her loss which occurred over 40 years ago when my mother was in her 40s. It’s very difficult to understand how you could toss your life away and focus only on what you no longer have instead of what you still have. My mother basically threw her life away by chronically, focusing on what she lost and never focusing on what she still had. Extremely difficult.
