The 6.2l doesn't disappoint. It will make you smile everytime you accelerate.
Ben, you are doing a great job. I must say that I am impressed, you are one of the very few who’s able to review the latest truck in the market. Keep up the good work!!
I had a 2015 silverado with the 5.3 and it didn't have the power I wanted. I test drove the 2021 5.3 and the 6.2, the 5.3 had WAY more power than my old 2015 truck's 5.3, and I didn't notice all that much difference between the 2021 5.3 and 6.2. The 5.3 had more than enough power. When I found out the 6.2 needed premium fuel, I bought the 5.3. More than happy with it! It doesn't tow more, It doesn't have more payload, just higher fuel costs. A no brainer for me. Also you can get all the options they show in the 6.2 in the 5.3.
I agree - big diff between 5.3 from 5 yrs ago to now. 2019 TB with 6 spd here and they tuned them diff as there is no lag on the pedal like before.
@@KTB3007 Wow, good luck with your 19, I just got the 21 Trail Boss and love it. No buyers remorse for not getting the 6.2!
How can it not NOT tow more? The torq rates are different snd torq is essentially tow power.... right? The higher the torq the more towing cap you have is what ive always been told.
@@tracyhiner22 Does yours have DFM? I installed a Pulsar LT to deactivate it as well as start / stop. Made a big difference.
i gotta 5.3 in my 03 with 240k; shits bulletproof.
You highlighted some differences in the two that don’t have anything to do with it being a 6.2 or 5.3. For example, one truck had the dark essentials package. That’s irrespective of the engine - it can be had with both engine sizes. Also the 6.2 happened to have leather and the 5.3 didnt. You can also get cloth or leather on either engine size. So the engine is a stand alone option.
can you get the sunroof with the 5.3 as well?
Yes you can get the sunroof on the 5.3L. I don’t know if there are many, or any, options that the 5.3L precludes you from getting.
So you can order a loaded 5.3 and not miss anything except the engine difference.
@@robertrusso6950 nailed it. It’s a review that bigger is better, even if only difference is engine in both trucks

@@Bayou_Russ what review...the clown didn't even drive the trucks......the video was shit
I was sold on purchasing the 6.2 trail boss . Ended up buying a GMC AT4 Baby Duramax and am happy with my decisionn
Hell yea in my opinion the GMC looks better then the Chevy especially in AT4 trim and the high torque and fuel efficiency of the baby duramax is just outstanding!! I wanted one myself but it was a bit too much over my budget so I ended up getting a 2018 Subaru Outback for its great offroad chops and great fuel economy and the amazing eyesight features
Great video! Just one correction. They come with 275/65/18, which are 32's, not 33's. 275/70/18 would be 33s. Still awesome compare video.
6.2 is definitely worth the price of admission! GREAT motor!
I love the ol' LM7 5.3 in my GMT800 GMC Yukon; tried and true, but if I were buying a new GM, it'd be the 6.2 for sure! A ton more power and torque with only a small hit to the MPGs.
Totally agree with your assessment.
Looking to tow a travel trailer, I think the bigger motor won't have to work as hard.
Getting ready to purchase my first truck... most likely the Custom TB and I don’t know what to choose. V8 with 6-speed or V8 with 10-speed?
I just bought the trail boss with the 5.3 still have a 1999 Z71 with the 5.3 I don't tow much so the 5.3 works for me if I feel the need for speed my 13 GT500 does the trick
Just wanted to correct you, as the leather seats doesn’t matter whether you get a 5.3 or a 6.2. And the blacked out badging is known as the “Midnight Edition”. Now I’m not sure if this edition is only offered with the 6.2. But other than that, the little bit of extra power is the only difference.
got me the 2021 Trail Boss Custom 5.3L. Love the black on black. Still gots 355HP and torque. When u got kids u don’t need a 6.2, very happy with my choice 🤙🏽🤙🏽
6.2L ftw
@@jasonn2284 trucks pull nearly the same since they have DFM in them. Test drive both, the pull the same IMO, they both lag the same just give different noise. To spend 5-15K extra just for a sun roof, push to start and auto stop 😂😂 yea I’ll pass. I’d rather spend that price on a whipple/Supercharger
I got kids too man, What does that have to do with what engine I chose, i got the 6.2 custom.

I like the front bumper, face on the 2020 custom 5.3l, the 6.2l don’t have that. Plus good luck looking for 6.2l 10 speed! Every where is dry
Had 5.3 for years and awesome engine with plenty of power until you get a 6.2 😂😂😂
Once you go 6.2 you can NOT go back!
Hey Ben really liked this comparison video. How about the 6.2L trial boss and the high country comparison that’s a cool video I would love to see.
I’ll try to arrange that when I’m better
@@BenHardyCars awesummmmmm. Feel better 👍
i have been using gm trucks since 2000 mostly denali and high country. I started with gm's 6.0L then got 5.3L and fell in love with it. Even though i had major cylinder problems with it. (bad luck i guess). in 2021 i decited to trade my 2016 silverado LT 5.3L for a brand new high country 6.2L. I have never been happier... the luxury, the performance, the power, the look makes it by far the best truck ever made by GM>
THX great comparison and quick !
@Ben Hardy at 4:43 you said that even though it has a bigger engine it pulls less, its because there both the same chassis, the bigger engine just means more weight so a little obvious it'll tow less... It just pulls the weight better than the 5.3, although the 5.3 doesnt have a super hard time
This was good information, but the comparison felt a little weird to me. You can spec a 5.3 and a 6.2 completely the same as far as interior and options go. This didn't really do anything with the trucks that would show the actual difference experientially between the 6.2 and the 5.3. I have the 6.2 in mine and it really does put a smile on your face when you put your foot down.
I'd get the 6.2
Great content, love this channel.
Who Doesn't????
Side by side comparison withe the high country? I think the high country can lift the tailgate with the remote if im not mistaken
Got the 16 5.3 Z71 LTZ and love it
Something that would be nice to note is that the items that were different are added on packages. The only difference between them is the engine. It’s misleading in the video because the leather seats and just the things they had different are added options.
No info on the 6.2 lifter issue’s?
I just bought the 5.3 and it has leather seats. I love it! I don't think I will be needing a 6.2 on a truck. Im Not planning to rece.
I have a 5.3 trail boss and it’s enough engine for me. I sold my 6.2l camaro ss for the 5.3 trail boss and I honestly have no complaints on lack of power whatsoever with the trail boss 5.3. The reason I got a 5.3 is because it was hard to find a trail boss with a 6.2 with all the specs I wanted in my area. I would have opted for the 6.2 if it was available but at the end of the day, the 5.3 does a great job. Towing could be a different story but i don’t tow often.
I agree the 6.2 is very hard to find it took me the whole summer to find a 2019 high country with the 6.2 v8 low miles most of them are over 15-20k used 2019 for 55k like hell no then I saw one after Chrismas for 55k only 4k miles on it now it has 8k miles on it love it
I'm about to trade my 6.2 2SS for a trail boss. I can find the 5.3 but 6.2 is hard to find. Dealer said they got once coming in and he is saving for me.
We will see.
@@ericwilson2372 i have the 6.2 high country it took me the whole summer to find a low mile one where i lives most of them were 30-50k range around 65 grand i found mines 54k 4k miles

@@2011leoc ya with your girl
What percentage of owners keep the telephone subscription up? I used the one in my 2008 Sierra twice in four years so I gave it up.
So there is a mileage penalty, how much? I like the 6.2 seats much better along with the sun roof. Can those extras be ordered for the 5.3 individually or are they exclusive to the larger engine model?
For myself the change in towing captivity seems like a big difference. I occasionally tow a car trailer and I never know how much the whole thing weighs. If you needed to pull a trailer with farm equipment it could be important. You live with a mileage penalty every time you use your pickup. I’ve had a 5.3L Sierra for 11 years, it’s a great engine, zero problems and it’s done everything I’ve asked of it. I’ll stick with that cheaper model. And $5,000 is quite a few payments.
I’m looking at possibly buying a 2021 Trail Boss. Some of the comments here about the only differences between the 5.3 and 6.2 trucks is engine size are false. The 5.3 comes with 3:42 axle ratio and the 6.2 is only available with 3:23 axle ratio. Bummer because I want 3:73 axle ratio with either engine.
The Mid-Night edition is an option, and the 6.2 cost me about $3K extra. I also have the large tow mirrors. 6.2 is a quicker truck as well. The only thing I do not like is the steering wheel is too skinny and nothing at the 10 and 2 position as well that is thicker to grab.
Do have anything on the Tail Boss 2500 HD Diesel
Last week I had a Hyundai accent for a rental car the window switches were identical to the window switches in both of those Silverados IDENTICAL!!!!
Imagine that a $60,000 plus truck shares the same window switches (because they come from the same supplier )as a $14,000 Hyundai accent!!!!
So people remember you're $60,000 vehicle has mass produced parts that goes in every manufacturer...
What no tilt and telescope steering wheel?
The only thing I don't like about the trail boss is the G80, had one in a Colorado and it never kicked in till it was too late or when it wasnt needed making the truck hop in the rear, would prefer a selectable locker
I have the 5.3 and it’s plenty of power for what I need. IMO the 6.2 isn’t worth the extra money. Mine is a trail boss lt
6.2 for me all day any day by the way love your videos buddy keep it up.
his videos suck...he didn't even drive the trucks
Is the 5.3 sluggish?
How is it possible that the tow capacity is the same? Where did you get that info from a sticker on the trucks or from the dalesman at the lot there?
The torq with the 6.2 would have to give it a leg up because the gear ratios are NOT the same - right?
Would think same gear ratio
The requirement for premium fuel, per GM, is what made me get the 5.3. With the increase in fuel costs coming, it's really going to hurt having to pay an extra 50c per gallon more.
6.2 and broke when that gas ⛽ price increase. LoL
I agree gas i definitely going up and the 5.3 with the 10 speed is a really capable truck. Im yet to have anyone try to race me in truck lol.

I have the 6.2/10sp in my LTZ and can't imagine anything less. It gets pretty decent fuel economy too usually over 20 highway.
What's crazy is how the 6.2 gets the same or better mpg then the base 4.3 v6 engine
@@subielife4life In know right? I'm pretty much no worse off than my friends Colorado.
But does the cost for the recommended 93 octane gas worth having the 6.2
@@johnphillipsjr7238 I drive 5-6,000 miles a for my daily and my my other 2 vehicles are a C8 and C5 they both take premium so honestly I don't even notice. I mean if someone drives a lot more I can see that being a concern that's where the choices are nice in this line up.
Once you go 6.2 you won’t go back.
Does the Chevy Trail Boss come in the double cab configuration with the 6.2?
You have to build it in LT
Just a heads up people, a lot of these options like leather seats, safety equipment, and center console can be had on the 5.3. Not too sure why he’s making it sound like you cant get leather seats and all that other stuff in the 5.3.
The biggest difference is that the 6.2 comes with lifter issue’s.
The 5.3 has those same issues. Its not the engine itself that's the issue, its that the supplier for the lifters in these engines that have the AFM\DFM that is the issue. When those cylinders deactivate, or shut down during the fuel management those lifters collapse so its not opening those calves, and when those cylinders are reactivated they aren't popping back up. GM has been aware of this issue now for years, however not all trucks, or full size SUV's will have this problem, so they just prefer to replace them as they come up. The easiest fix to it is to simply turn off your AFM\DFM and no longer run that risk. Besides, the difference in fuel economy is only about 1mpg on average. The EPA are the ones insisting on car manufacturers using this unproven technology in the end. Who thought the Government regulating how auto manufacturers build their engines was a good idea, after all they're the same fine folks who gave us the DMV, IRS, and the Post Office! And look how well those are run!
Quality video as usual. Gotta go with the 6.2L/10sp imho.
Ram needs a lager engine option just like this. I’d be first in line for one of those.
Technically they have one, it’s just only good for towing
@@TheDiameter they have a larger engine option for the ram 1500?!
@@HRCfan17 No on the 1500 only for

@@jimiraymalmsteen973 and it’s a nice truck I just meant the engine being an option for the regular ram 1500 line.
I’ll get a 6.2 V8 Ben.
The biggest difference is that 93 octane is required for the 6.2. Over 200k miles thats gotta be a couple thousand dollars difference.
I bought my 2021 Trail Boss in November with the 5.3 engine and I have absolutely no issues or regrets getting it.
The payload is 1783lbs which is actually more important to me than towing. So the 6.2 would be less useful to me than the 5.3 is.
It had cloth but I had them install custom Katskinz leather seats (I got to pick colors and stiching).
With the leather seats and a bed liner installed I was OTD for just under $40k.
Sticker does not mean squat on these you can get huge discounts.
I did not get a leather wrapped steering wheel so I bought a custom leather wrap from wheelskins and stitched it on myself.
Its thicker and higher quality than the Chevy leather steering wheel.
Bought some NFab side steps that are rough powder coat black for $320.
Installed a 12' sub under rear seat using a custom made sub box.
Bought plug and play LED low and high beam lights for $70 and they improved visibility 300%.

Is 65 HP and worse gas mileage worth $3500 more for your grocery trips? If there was no diff in price I’m thinking I’d rather have the 5.3 honestly. Must be a lot of wealthy people in the comments section here. A lot of people mad at their money. Premium gas, worse gas mileage, for 65 more HP that 98% of you will never have a need for. Lol.
