When Jimmy says “three years” it was almost a question as well as the beginning of his statement. Almost as though Jimmy is pointing out how long the war was and that the guy couldn’t of possibly been sick for three whole fucking years.
Fun fact: Michael Pitt was supposed to have a much larger story but due to his troubles getting along with his co-stars and director it was decided to write him out instead of continue his plot. Shame.
@@BigBlackGlock I always wondered why they killed off the best character. He and Steve Buscemi did a movie together though before this. I wonder if they got along during Boardwalk Empire.
If you look back at the scene when Jimmy and Richard first met while waiting at the VA clinic, Richard shows Jimmy the German sniper's mask he carries with him and tells the story how he waited 3 days for the sniper to remove it to scratch his nose and that is when Richard shot him just below his right eye. That is exactly where his shot was aimed in this clip and I think that is an amazing detail. It shows how these soldiers mind's are still in the war as they are constantly reliving it.
The metaphor applies but the story is implied to be true. In the scenes preceding this, Jimmy was sleeping on a train and heard the German crying in his dreams.
It was common until newer high power scope became an option. Most people would go for the grape shot in the forehead, but windage and gravity drew the bullet off target slightly.
Good answers but it's symbolic. The windage and gravity within 5 feet in a store or resturant won't matter at all, even the long distance shots were not affected at this time due to windage and gravity from a trained marksman. For an example cutting the dick off and putting it in the mouth or cutting the tongue off and putting in a shoe. It sends a message to who found them.
The song that plays while Richard exits the room is perfect for this scene. Reminds me of Frankenstein and just how much of a doctor Richard is at his craft.
Looking back now (after the second season's finale) it's interesting to see Jimmy talking about how people should accept their fate when it's their time to go.
In all fairness, Jimmy (the character) was a Harvard student before going off to war. He wasn't your typical blue-collar gangster with only some grade school to pass off as an education. It makes sense that he would have a way with words, moreso than the dumb goon sitting there listening to him. I think it's believable just from that fact.
Imagine if Jimmy just went to New York and formed his own crew with Lansky, Luciano, and Richard. Would have been a dominating force. Or if he had just stayed with Capone in Chicago... He was easily my favorite characters of the series.... really wish they did more with him.
Problem with Jimmy is he didn't learn to relax you know and he let his dad manipulate him that was the start of his downfall. And sadly was killed by his real dad
I always wished Jimmy worked it out with Nucky. If Nucky had jimmy and Richard by his side he would have been unstoppable . Plus imagine throwing in the Irish guy with Jimmy and Richard as well ? Nucky would have dominated .
Great scene! I always wondered why in boardwalk the bullet under the eye was a reoccurring thing (Jimmy and nuckys death also). I always thought it was a tribute to moe greene in the godfather but I could be wrong
Seeing as the first US troops were deployed in combat in spring 1918, Jimmy did really well to be fighting for 3 years. Either that or he got lost and just randomly started killing his way across the French countryside
I miss Jimmy. I love Richard Harrow. He sort of reminds me of Gomez Addams. It's probably the music in the scene and the fact that Jack Huston's Aunty is Mortisha. I'm just starting to watch season 3 now. Looking forward to seeing Richard's story unfold. He's a gentleman but also a lethal weapon. Never trust the quiet ones lol :)
I feel a little sheepish responding to a ten year old post but as an introvert I hate the notion that you can't trust the soft spoken. Richard Harrows character was a world class sniper and as professional and trained as they come. Wouldn't make a difference if he was as brash and loud as Al Capone was. To me, the loudmouths have a huge chip on their shoulder and way too much to prove. They freak me out, personally. People are just people
I hate that this guy could be killed for killing Pearl but Jimmy was unable to avenge Angela's death. I found that unfair. I loved Angela in Boardwalk. I thought she was one of the better characters. Her and Jimmy's love was strained because of the choices he made but they both loved each other unconditionally even if sometimes it didn't seem like that. Jimmy's mother had a lot to do with the issues in the marriage as well. Best character on this show besides Steve.
I like to think that the shoulder pat was the signal to Harrow. Like, if the guy had actually served or been less of a weasel, Jimmy might've given him a pass.
Back then people dressed more formally. Women wore dresses all the time, even around the house, and men wore ties, vests and jackets out to take in a ballgame. It wasn't just the mafia.
@cassavelli In case you didn't follow the whole thing. He wasen't raised or survived on the streets to become the typical mafia or gangster type. He's sucked into that world rather reluctantly. He's struggling to get back to a normal life after a world war with a wife and kid to provide for. Meanwhile he finds the killing and crime rather easy after what he's went through. It's actually quite a compelling character since it could be anyone under the same circumstances.
I think that, in the context of the character, the speech makes sense. Jimmy, the character giving the speech, was going to an ivy league school before he took off to fight against the Kaiser. In the last episode or two, you see him quoting from Christopher Marlowe (if I recall correctly). The writers of this show are quite good, in my opinion, especially for television.
Richard Harrow was the best character in this show ( and thats really saying something), the actor did an amazing job. He should have become a big star after this show, baffling that he didn't
@jswinder Well, if you look at the scene again, there wasn't really much to notice. The glass suddenly shattering was a jump, yes, but by the time they realized it had been a bullet with a one way ticket into that dude's face, it was all over. And even if they weren't familiar with Mob hits like that, a headshot is a headshot - it wasn't like Richard was going to unload on his target.
@cassavelli Sopranos and Boardwalk are apples and oranges my friend. Completely different scenario in each show. To then suggest that one is better than the other is a matter of personal taste. To me both shows are incredible, and to be fair the Sopranos has 6 seasons on this new show. I love both religiously.
@CanadianChronic2121 No doubt, he deserved that Oscar nom. I was super excited to see his face in the cast. He's such a nutcase in this! Way crazier than the 'crazy' guy from that movie.
In the Episode when Jimmy is on the Train to Chicago he awakes from a nightmare & you hear the German Soldier yell "Mutti, Mutti" right before he wakes up!
@victorspell1 It's kind of like making a new movie about the mob, and casting your Don as Robert De Niro. Go back to the 1st episode. Do you remember Thompson's speech in front of the suffragettes? Do you remember Jimmy's response on the stairs? "In the trenches we once ate dogs, but rats?" You'll notice a huge change in Pitt's acting comparing these early episodes to the later. I don't know if this is the director's influence or his character's development.
I dont think beautiful is the right adjective to use, but this scene was gut-wrenching and enthralling. The unease of jimmy's sit down was all the more unsettling and, his talk of the german soldier made me uncomfortable and scared. that's damn fine acting. I do love the tin man though...his name's richard right?
The Greek is the soldier in the story..... twirling in the barbwire of jimmys words... guessing from the fear in his eyes he wanted to live; like the soldier... giving him HOPE he'd live, due to jim leaving at the table.... but like the story No matter how much you grasp for life in a Horrible situation ... death will more likely be the outcome then survival........ plus like pulp fiction Its just some cold blooded shit to say to a mothafucka before he dies
I never understood this trope of making your enemy feel like they got away with death only to then turn around and quickly kill them. Sure, he's dead, but he didn't know he was going to die so what's the point?
ww1 was more terrifying than ww2, I mean when I even think about it, You probably had ( in my opinion, this isn't a true statement) a 40% chance of even living.
Its nuts that this guy served three years in France. Even crazier when America actually was only involved for the last year. Crazy
When Jimmy says “three years” it was almost a question as well as the beginning of his statement.

The shot below the eye shows up all throughout the series in other ways too
Jimmy only had 2 seasons but he has so many memorable scenes
I hate that old woman screaming
She's just standing there XD
I had flashbacks to cats and dogs of the evil cat ‘saying someone please shut her up’ 😂😂
2:40 Jimmy has taught me that if you get patted on your shoulders like that, you know you fucked up. Lol.
Brandon McNeely lol true...same with the cheeks )
Imagine Harrow watching this whole scene through the lenses of his scope, patiently waiting for Jimmy to get up to tap the shoulder..
He was talking about Pearl when he was using the metaphor of the the german soldier.
Eric Viola I can’t believe I never put that together lol. I just thought it was some heartless shit to say before he got shot. Good catch.
The metaphor applies but the story is implied to be true. In the scenes preceding this, Jimmy was sleeping on a train and heard the German crying in his dreams.
No shit.
In boardwalk empire people kept getting shot in the cheek.
It was common until newer high power scope became an option. Most people
would go for the grape shot in the forehead, but windage and gravity
drew the bullet off target slightly.
Besides, why risk the one-in-a-million chance of the bullet glancing off of the forehead plate, when you can count on it getting through softer areas?
Good answers but it's symbolic. The windage and gravity within 5 feet in a store or resturant won't matter at all, even the long distance shots were not affected at this time due to windage and gravity from a trained marksman. For an example cutting the dick off and putting it in the mouth or cutting the tongue off and putting in a shoe. It sends a message to who found them.
Jimmy's talking about himself here, at the end (not the dying German obviously)
This scene really shows how fantastic this show was. Great everything.
You only have to see this scene once, and you remember it forever. Mind blowing.
I watched it once and it seems very basic, bad acting.

Awesome how it cuts to Richard Harrow and the organ starts playing the same type of music that's in Phantom of the Opera.

He's channeling his inner Christopher Walken to deliver the lines in this scene.
This series got the more obscure character (Jimmy) and the most effective assasin (Mr. Harrow) of the entire gangster genre

At this point, Liam is well aware that Jimmy and Torrio's men already slaughtered Sheridan and his men. So of course he was afraid of Jimmy.
