I just had a terrifying thought: Gillian Darmody is the American version of Junji-Ito’s Tomie. The way she seduces men, manipulates them, drives them insane. The way she took advantage of Jimmy and her grandson and pushed Angela away. The seemingly sweet smiling woman with a sadistic and narcissistic streak underneath. It makes real sense now

I've watched Boardwalk Empire so many times now and it occurs to me that the two finest characters in the series are these two FICTIONAL ones, Jimmy Darmody and Richard Harrrow. And in this scene, they actually discuss fiction, with Harrow saying "the basis of fiction is that people have some sort of connection with each other . . . and they don't". But these two fictional characters disprove Harrow's assertion even as he says it; their friendship is instantaneous and sincere, based on shared past experiences and respect--one of the very best pieces of plot/character development in the show. What an amazing masterpiece this series is!

Ha, Richard has such a fleeting "Ah, yeah, of course that WOULD be the title, wouldn't it" look on his face when Jimmy tells him the book is "The Tin Soldier." Jack Huston is a very talented actor; all of the little subtleties in his performance, the way he makes himself both sympathetic, innocent, yet ruthless all at the same time... Yeah I think they were clueless what to do with Richard around season 4. He had that run in with the 2 guys in his sister's barn who he was doing murders for, but that storyline ended kind of weak. They could've did more with jimmy too, but from what I heard Michael Pitt was a nightmare to work with on set so they just killed him off. Jimmy and Richard were a bad ass team. They should've had their own spin off series. Lol

    • @suncore598

According to the "inside the episode" featurette I watched, they portrayed Richard's story in Season 4 as someone who couldn't endure the life of a killer anymore, tried to do something different instead, and was forced to kill again to keep Gillian from getting away with murder. But he couldn't kill as well as he used to partially because of his hand jury and partially because he isn't the same killer he was before.

I don't know the actors name, but he's one of the best characters of the entire show. He does a great job with his character and really shows great portrayal of traumatic stress & difficulties after a life altering situation. He doesn't show full blown post war symptoms, which is great, because it plays into his character as being strong willed and being able to cope with scenes of intense violence, pain & affliction, even though he's more of a loner.

Interesting scene, two flawd killers Jimmy being mainly quite empty and disconnected, Richard being extremely lonely like a insecure little kid giving his book and showing him his stuff. Being human and polite. Imagine doing that now-a-days with everyones noses planted into their phones, ignoring human contact and seeking online attention. Pretty sure you would end up being ignored, not taken serious, getting a look like ur weird or insane or getting a rude response like "f*ck off or mind ur own f*cking business" or whatever.

For those who don't know, I very much appreciate the verbiage. You never hear the term "marksman", the highest level a "sniper" can reach. It's always "sharpshooter." Por que?

@sirbizzyd3 I then cannot wait til the second season, I wish he had been in more scenes in the first, mostly because he became my favourite character and this guy is an amazing actor, and has become one of my favourite actors now.

At first I thought Jimmy was trying to be nice to him, then once his face did that shift I realized he just needed a killer to help him get over the top (pun intended) in the mob world. Great scene that shows the insanity of man, because no one comes to you out of friendship; they either want or need something from you.

Whoa! I mentioned that on the last video I watched. Only, I think his character (strangely) reminds me of Fallout's ghoul characters in general. The scarred face is so incidental it's almost hard to believe it is - with that voice.

The only fault in the portrayal of Mr. Harrow is his shaking hands without standing.
