I love how Richard is one of the only characters in the entire show that everyone universally likes and didn’t want to get killed off, besides Chalky and maybe Jimmy.
Archetypally he's close to pristine. He embodies the type of man that men wish they were and women wish they were with: stoic, kind, loyal, brave, upright etc. He's a tragic figure, but his suffering and how he bears it is what makes him so attractive to the audience, and almost holy.
One of the things that makes this so heartbreaking is that you almost expect him to be making some sort of fetishistic scrapbook. Something like what Van Alden would do with Margaret, particularly since Richard has such a clearly damaged psyche. Yet you see that all he fantasizes about is love, the pure kind that a family would provide. Not a word said and I tear up every time I see this.
@@iseehowitis9382 they're all murderers... Its a show made in which you are made to sympathize with and root for all these murderers. So that's beside the point. The point is that Harrow is a scarred man, who would probably NOT be a murderer and in a very different place, if circumstances hadn't brought him to this life. A lot of people were damaged in WWI and brought that trouble back with them once the war was over. Why do you think you see such a jump in heinous crimes in the 20's and 30's? Men trained to be capable to kill and maim returned from a war sometimes with nothing to return to, became vagrants, or criminals. That's the point of the scene, that Harrow wouldn't be here in another life. He is what his world made him.
The great thing is that he gets his wish, under random circumstances of course. His friend and friend's wife are killed so he becomes a father figure to their son Tommy, and he develops a relationship with a fellow veteran's daughter in Julia Sagorsky. It's an awkward family photo *literally* but it's awesome for Richard.
My favorite jack Huston put his all in the character I feel sorry about what happened to his character Mr. Narrow that's why I don't like war my hits off to our brave souls who fought and were so courageous

Nobody even discovered his amazing body of work until shortly before he died, while they were cleaning out his old apartment. It so easily could have been lost to time.

the thing is though, the last scene you see of Richard is him leaving Tommy at Julia's house after his killing spree, and telling the father something like "Be safe. That's what's important" then leaving. I think that means that it's no longer about his disfigurement being an obstacle for his dream of having a family, but it's more about the sort of life that he leads getting in the way of him keeping his newfound family. I mean look what happened to Jimmy and Angela.
My Dad remembers WW1 veterans always at the head of parades in our small town when he was a boy in the 50's and they were old men then but they carried their 1903 Springfields from the local Legion Hall. My grandpa remembered Civil War veterans always at the lead with the flag. I remember WW2 veterans and what a childhood I had getting to hear their stories. Veterans are the same, just different wars. Be glad they're around just in case things ever got bad.

@Tracy137 You're right; we would see a different side to him. I’m probably one the few people that thought he deserved better than Julia. They were fine together, but I think that an intimate closeness was missing in their relationship (not talking about the sexual kind). I have the feeling that Julia didn’t love him as much as Richard probably loved her.
The only thing that eases the pain to think of all these people that suffered like him after the WW1, is that by now they are all dead and free of their pain.

@bodlive08 I was too! I didn't expect to see this. Even the question he made to Jimmy earlier in the episode, "What does it feel like to have everything?" You can sort of know he is longing for a relationship or normalcy when he has that dream running on the beach with Odette, but this scene goes so much deeper into that desire for a family. Richard is obviously a dangerous man, but only when he has to be. I've yet to see a random, pointless killing committed by him.
A Marine OIF Veteran myself, I identify with the character on many levels his morals or lack thereof notwithstanding. Therefore you may now have a better insight as to why earlier i stated i do not believe his characters to be a psychopath nor sick.He is methodical and emotions have little use to him. Some civilians have a difficult time understanding the methodical and deceptive nature of warfare.Harrow positively encapsulates the melancholy, emotionally distant mind of a veteran in peacetime.
@Tracy137 I always disliked Raoul too!! Like, even when I was 7 and saw the opera for the first time, I was so MAD when she didn't choose the phantom. I basically wanted Raoul out of the picture from the get-go, haha, and I hardly even knew what love was. You've had two strokes, that has got to be a challenge. I'm a nurse, and while I don't work on a stroke flooor, I can appreciate what that does to your body and mind. I think your philosophy on life is fantastic (don't hate, etc).
@kkarls1 You're a good 'neighbour' for doing that!!! Top marks :) If only I could have seen you aid in her defence in real life, I wish more people would, it would make me confident about the human race again. But still, I applaud Maam or Girl. @Tracy137 Oh cool, I'm all for more of Richard in season 3, both in kill-mode and soft-mode haha. Most of the people I watch the show with have either Jimmy or Richard as a favorite. Poor Jimmy :/
Now you can marry me, or until you get beaten so hard that you wish you just not exist. People with this kind of lifestyle has it's unstable version that nobody will see until you stay next to him. Let's see what you gonna say.
This scene made me nervous. I think Harrow is an amazingly compelling character and the fact that hes Jimmy's right hand man and he obviously trusts him. but this coupled with him asking Jimmy 'how it feels to have everything' makes me a bit nervous that we could see Harrow turn on his friend.
@faboul467 noo the actor who plays richard is really gorgeous and it doesn't matter if Richard hims self had scares his beauty still shines through. I don't understand how women cannot see it. I mean yes it's jarring to see at first but even Jimmy's wife got used to the scares. IF you actually sit and talk with him you won't even notice them anymore because you paying attention him as a man. Every one is flawed!!! At least he got them from fighting for his country. :) I stan for Jim and Rich!!

Therefore you may now have a better insight as to why earlier i stated i do not believe his characters to be a psychopath nor sick.He is methodical and emotions have little use to him. Some civilians have a difficult time understanding the methodical and deceptive nature of warfare.Harrow positively encapsulates the melancholy, emotionally distant mind of a veteran in peacetime.
the description made me LOL
Such a tortured soul....
Sorry don't know which one, I don't want to offend. Sorry, my Military is showing. LOL
Not random, planned. Not pointless, aimed to draw the D'Lessio's out.
@kkarls1 My pleasure, Miss. I'll use Miss, seeing as you still have your youth and beauty ;) Continue your discussion, I'm sure you two are keeping up an interesting chat and giving eachother positive vibes. Forget about that putz, I'll scare him off if he keeps that up!!! And nice to see you have a good taste in Literature and Film :)
@Tracy137 Oh cool, I'm all for more of Richard in season 3, both in kill-mode and soft-mode haha. Most of the people I watch the show with have either Jimmy or Richard as a favorite. Poor Jimmy :/
great actor! good job!
If I existed in that universe, I would sooo want to marry him...on the condition that, ya know, he stops killing people n stuff.
VictorianRomantic okay
Gotta have him kill some rivals through kinder garden and highschool and rescue the kidnapped can't let that badassesry go to waste ;)
