The irony too is that Paul only respected Richard after Richard showed that he had the same killer instinct to protect his family like Paul did. Paul wasn't really a bad person, and I think that showed in his response to getting manhandled by Richard. A lesser man would have taken it out on his family, but Paul realized in that moment how sincere Richard's feelings for his daughter were. By the end, Paul is talking to Richard like his own son-in-law and Richard seems to really love Paul in spite, or maybe because of, them coming to blows. It's an amazing character arc for the two of them

He wouldn't have hurt Paul unless Paul actually hurt Tommy or Julia but he wouldn't. He was just drunk and upset. I think Paul actually helped Richard and Richard helped Paul. They would sit awake at night and talk for hours. It was a thing of honor between former soldiers.

@@simle6010 Richard was trained (very well) to kill people...not fight them at Princeton bareknuckle boxing night.
and then one morning as Papa Paul emerged from his drunken slumber only to find his daughter entertaining Richard. Papa Paul soon experience a near death experience.
