Not only that, but he punishes him for doing so, by shooting him through the mouth. Harrow, a man who wanted to be loved, was disappointed and disgusted that he didn't take the final opportunity to tell his child that he loved them.

"Boardwalk Empire" had moments of greatness and this scene was definitely one of them. Everything about it is better than what you see in most films. I went searching for this scene because I have never forgotten it and wanted to see if it was as good as I remember. Its actually better. James Riordan is so kick ass in this scene. I noticed a bunch of stuff I didn't the first time. Harrow is one of the great antiheros of all time, betrayed by his country, he become his own country. Agree the scene reminds of "No Country for Old Men" but the acting is what makes it so original. I felt like I was in the room and was just as helpless as mr. werner but, like him, I couldn't do anything but wait for the inevitable. I saw Mr. Riordan in a small role in the Speilberg movie "The Post" and on other tv shows and always remember this scene even though he is always compeltely different which is what acting is IMHO

Always struck me that Richard shot him in his cheek first. Guy is a trained marksman, and at that distance that could’ve been a clean kill no problem
In the middle of Werner’s begging he a points to his son’s birthday card and asks “Can I?” and Richard let’s him write. Instead of a goodbye message he scribbles the name and address of his boss to save his own skin, then is dumb enough to ask “Why?” when Richard shot him
Despite his coldness Richard always wished for family of his own. He gave the man a chance to make peace with his son before he went, and he wasted it

The murder scene was like Italian Spaghetti Western movies made by Sergio Leone. He said the focus of the scene is on the processes leading to the character's death, not solely about the death itself. He liked to play audience emotion on how someone is getting to die, what happens just before he die.

Something I noticed on a rewatch is that Harrow almost exclusively aims for the head. I think there was one or two shotgun blasts to the chest. Considering how much work goes into planning gun fight scenes with squibs and the like, I really believe it was a conscious choice. Part of it could be down to the robotic, professional 1 shot 1 kill approach he has, but I do think that pulling a trigger and destroying someone's face must surely have an effect on his character. I associate his headshotting with the scene of him eating breakfast with Jimmy's family, lamenting it's "everything" and he cannot have it due to the damage done to his soul. When he kills Manny, his face is a ruin. When he rescues Tommy, it is a ten ring shooting gallery. Most mobsters in that scene get domed. (even a guy who took a shotgun to the chest.)
All that is to say, I think the cheek shot may have been an accident, sub-conscious or possibly intentional. None of that matters, the pause after does. I do think it's related to the fact he was given a chance to pass on something to his child and chose to use the opportunity to further his own life at the expense of showing love to his family. He gave him a small taste of his own fate in expiation.

      1) The killer killed innocents based on luck so effectively for no reason.
      2) He has a cowardly cunt only picking on unaware helpless victims.
      3) He is basically death, killing at random, with no reason and no morals. I feel this is the point of his character and I also feel it is the most facile, idiotic point to make with a character. Duh, we all know the nature of death - so fucking what.

James Riordan is very impressive in this scene, going from casual to begging for his life with the camera on him the whole time. In other words, if you notice in most shows the camera goes back and forth from person to person, here it just holds on him and he delivers. I am reluctant to post spoilers because not everyone has viewed the season in its entirety but suffice it to say whatever the reason Harrow killed Werner, it is a big turning point for Harrow. I like that Harrow is changed by something he did rather than something that was done to him. I think it is very powerful. If you watch "behind the episode" you will get some insight from the writers into what I am talking about. Season 5, I can't wait. Having said all that, I would REALLY appreciate some more women of all ages in small and large roles.

This scene, and many "I'm about to die" scenes in cinema over the years has left me with one question. Why do they never try to rush the guy with the gun? Close the distance and make it a fight at least. The last option to avoid your demise. We see it often when the "hero" is at gunpoint and they smack the gun away and win the struggle that results. In the unlikely event that i'm ever at death's door, I know I will at LEAST try to rush him. It's like Stringer Bell's death in The Wire. He tries to negotiate, when he realises they're still going to kill him. Duck and jive, try and make it difficult for them at least.
