  • Nucky Thompson's scene with Joseph Kennedy on top of Nucky's club in Atlantic City is one of the best written scenes in this show. This season has been a pleasure to watch so far. Only four Episodes LEFT!

    For anyone who didn't get the title, Nucky was trying to seduce Joe into making a big liquor deal in earlier scenes. When they ate together, Nucky turned away wine because Joe didn't want to drink with him. A good boy on his best behaviour trying to make a good impression.
    What Nucky didn't realise was that Joe was onto him the whole time and this scene shows his awareness of Nucky's business tactics as Joe lays a glass of liquor in front of him as if to say, "I see you plain and clearly Nucky Thompson".
    It truly is a great scene. I've always told my friends who watched the show never to binge watch it as there are so many subtleties that take time to sink in and you miss them if you rush.

    Big difference between Joe and Nucky here. Joe talking about handing things down, "one generation, that's all it takes"; his whole frame is forward-thinking. Very notable that the writers had Nucky's visitor talk about sailing "with his boys", but resisted the temptation to ever let on that "his boys" were John, Robert, and Teddy Kennedy (and Joe, jr.). That is sophisticated writing.... assuming intelligence on the part of the viewer to know that, rather than clubbing them over the head with it.
    All too lacking in most Hollywood writing.

    If you take a look at Joe Kennedy's life, you realize why people talk of the Kennedy curse. His oldest son Joe Jr. was meant to be his successor, the guy who was supposed to run for office one day to catapult the Kennedy family into the highest social classes. He was killed during the war in 1944. His next child was JFK and we all know what happened to him. His oldest daughter Rosemary had severe mental problems, her father arranged for her to get a lobotomy when she was in her early 20s and she was kept from the public and institutionalized for the rest of her life. His daughter Kathleen died in a plane crash in 1948 when she was just 28 years old. And finally Bobby Kennedy who was shot and killed in 1968. Joe Kennedy died in 1969, so he had to live trough all of those tragedies.

Cannabis is harmful to children and generally smoking regularly while the brain is still in development (Sometime into the mid 20s) can cause irreversible damage to an individual's brain. Cannabis has good applications when used medically, and is a far less dangerous social / recreational drug than alcohol. But it isn't some miracle cure-all, and is definitely far from harmless. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, & I fully support the decriminalisation of cannabis, It just annoys me when people promote the drug as something it is not.

      Its a point inwhich nucky was seeing a person he couldve become if he had not chosen to be a gangster. Though reputation you gain, you gain more being straight than crooked as seen with kennedy. Nuckys insecurities grow and build up to this point, where a person who did it better than you, outdoing you in skill, business and "morals" and he has the right to ask you what you want as if he can give it to you directly, like if you need him. Nuckys response "i want to leave something behind" is all he can grasp at as kennedy disects his ambitions and reasons for getting rich. Nucky then plunges into another cup of alcohol as though hes swallowing pride, as kennedy leaves remarking about billie kent. Its a pretty good damn scene

    • @abusepotential7071
      @abusepotential7071 4 года назад +2

      @@aroveranalysis9978 I agree with most of what you say, but Joe Sr. was born to a wealthy Boston family involved in local politics. They still experienced discrimination for being Irish, but he had a lot of advantages growing up that Nucky never would have. I'm still not sure how I feel about this scene -- Joe pegs him as a low-class criminal and talks down to him as such but will ultimately be proven to eat his words when he sees how shrewd Nucky really is. Of course Joe Sr.'s sons will change the course of the 20th century and do an enormous amount to normalize the Irish in America.

    Kennedy-senior (quote): "NEVER BROKE A LAW IN HIS LIFE" ??? I beg to differ! :D ...as far as I know not only he was a major bootlegger, but also HEAVILY involved in (believe it or not!) - DOPE MONEY! - and he was makng business with gangsters ALL THE TIME! :D:D Moreover! - he also juiced the stock-market, with schemes that are very familiar even today! It was only thanks to his contacts with the "upper-echelons" of Wall Street that he retired all his stocks at almost "perfect timing" - even "too perfect", given the fact that only a couple of weeks later all the stocks collapsed. Fuckin' son of a bitch! Between the two HE was a much bigger crook that "Nucky" Johnson from A.C. (real life name of the character here presented as "THOMP-son"). :)

They all became weak and pathetic, whiny and lost all their money stupid show that started out great. Also the crap about women being abused and childhood memories you could just skip all those episodes they are awful.
