    As a designer I can confirm that simple design is often the most difficult.

    • @GodIsInHisHeaven
      @GodIsInHisHeaven 3 года назад +25

      As a designer also, I can confirm, it is not entirely that difficult, a massive part of the difficulty is convincing the client that the design is minimalist (as opposed to non-design, case in point Daniel Wellington). Clients often expect 'more' for their money which goes against minimalism. It's hard to get a client that thinks along the same wavelength as the designer.

    • @squinkygordon1322
      @squinkygordon1322 Год назад

      The simpler the design means that any flaws are much more glaring. I was a sign-painter years ago and it was much more difficult to do a simple block type lettering like Gill Sans or Helvetica, as opposed to something ornate like Old English; which is far easier to execute because the "gobbledygook" of the style disguises any imperfections. On simpler designs our eyes zero in on any kind of imperfection.

I had problems with the movement losing time and when I found the exact same movement in my $25 fashion store give-away I was mortified. • @Sergeant_Fury

    Braun should stick to electric shavers. Sure, it's minimalist and gray, but so what? As a side show, a Braun watch may be okay, but there's always a feeling that it was probably a give-away with that electric shaver you bought. I think that is a problem with a lot of companies that sell watches as a side line to their main product line.

    Dieter Rams did not design this watch, it was Dietrich Lubs. He designed all of Braun's wall clocks and watches, as well as most of their alarm clocks, during the "classic" period of Braun design. I have an original AW 20, it's even smaller at 31 mm, but the completely straight lugs give it more presence than one would assume, just like you experienced with the one in this video.

    Dieter rams is a legend. It’s worthwhile to consider the context of the original release. The goal of modernist design was to strip away ornament so that products better spoke to all people and not just the bourgeoisie, or an attempt at a universal design language. Further, when this watch was released quartz watches were in fact very expensive. whether it has sapphire or lume is what I would consider current day functionality and doesn’t really apply to this piece. Personally I think this watch speaks to its era, even the price. Maybe that’s not a good thing however.

It does remind me quite a bit of the octofinisimo by bulgari, and I can also see some early Vacheron Constantin Overseas DNA in there with the date window having a textured metal finishing like the dial. Over all, loving this watch.

    Braun was bought by Gillette in the 1960s and is now owned by Procter & Gamble. The main goal of Gillette was to gain market share in dry shaving. Over the years, many other product ranges were either discontinued or outsourced and produced by other manufacturers under the license of the brand Braun. According to German Wikipedia, the London based company Zeon Ltd. distributes Braun clocks and watches since 2011. It's not really Braun anymore in terms of quality and design spirit, just recycled design.

    Dieter Rams’ designs are world famous and the company’s products are well known for their contemporary yet timeless look. This line of Bauhaus watches are understated and elegant. The only iconic watch that I can think of that rivals it is the famous Seiko Chariot watch worn by Steve Jobs in the equally famous TIIME 1984 cover by Norman Seff. That’s a collectors’ item and the original was sold for a record $42,000 at auction for a 34 mm watch! I have the 2019 reissue in 37.5 mm. At half the price of the Braun, the TIMEX Norway at 40 mm had caught my eye and is a worthy substitute.

    They should've kept the second hand. By removing the second markers on the face it wouldn't have been as obvious if the second hand was off. The lugs need to be redesigned. I guess this can apply to other German house hold names who's "engines" are made a little further away. It seems odd though with watches made by some brands seem not to give a pair of dingo's kidneys about hand alignment (I'm not just talking seconds hand here) when I've never had any had alignment problems (any hand that is) with any of my Casio watches in the last 40 years! I'll not name the brands but will say it includes Swiss, European and Japanese marques, if we all put up with this nothing will happen to fix it. I apologise for the little rant at the end.

    Wondering how this compares to the AW10, which has a seconds hand and is labelled Made In Germany like this one. Anyone know if it has the same alignment issue as other Braun watches like Ben mentioned in a previous video?

    Good review exept i disagree swiss movement is something on spotlight as full negative. Pointec and Junghans as well as Hanhart (in a lot of the cases) use Swiss movements in they're pices. It is something watch industry did for a long time and in house is a relatively new thing. I dont mind highlighting it but it seems you use this argument to add to overall flaver of the review freely.
    Fact it is swiss parts would be more interesting in this one

    Well, those "indecies", if you can call them that, are not all that useful either since how the hell are you supposed to see them from more than 10 cm distance? They should have been at least as thick as hands are to make them usable.
    But then again, minimalism and usefulness are at odds with each other more often than not.

    Nice honest review Ben. I fall into the "it's boring" category, and at the price I don't see this offering much value at all. I also think the angled lugs are ugly.

    For £1 less you could get a Junkers Bauhaus 40mm also made in Germany. Much more interesting with a small sub seconds dial..

    Could be worse I suppose. Braun could've had it stuck together in China ,(Who knows)and still stuck the German badge on it. Rather uninspiring and a low spec offering.
    Another great and well presented review! 🙂

      @damyr 3 года назад +1

      @@cbr7170 Well, following your logic, you could also say you'd rather spend such money on a bunch of potatoes. You know, because they are not comparable. At least that would sound funny. LOL
      And btw, do you dive often, or you like to wear divers just to look like a dumbass?

    • @cbr7170
      @cbr7170 3 года назад +3

      @@damyr Why would I buy potatoes when I am in the market for a new watch? That makes no sense. There is a difference between different types of watches and anything you can spend money on.
      And no I don't dive often, but what exactly makes you think you need to be a diver to wear dive watches? There are different reasons to buy a diver:
      -water restiance
      -aesthetics
      -ruggedness
      etc.

    I think you guys might be missing the point with this one. The Braun design studio wasn't in the business of high quality horology, they were in the industrial design business and the AW line was their solution of in-house design for corporate gifts instead of the japanese-made, mass-produced branded junk (at the time) that the marketing department was giving out. I absolutely agree that the price mark is way off for what ot offers, but honestly I think it has value in itself, at least for people who love Dieter Ram's designs, which btw, Steve Jobs was one of them. Personally I prefer the AW10 model.
    Here's an interesting article about it www.hodinkee.com/articles/designers-designers-watch-braun-classics
