  • Sam Harris speaks with Renée DiResta about the state of our information landscape. They discuss the difference between influence and propaganda, shifts in communication technology, influencers and closed communities, the asymmetry of passion online and the illusion of consensus, the unwillingness to criticize one's own side, audience capture, what we should have learned from the Covid pandemic, what is unique about vaccines, Renée's work at the Stanford Internet Observatory, her experience of being smeared by Michael Shellenberger and Matt Taibbi, Elon Musk and the Twitter files, the false analogy of social media as a digital public square, the imagined "censorship-industrial complex," the 2024 presidential election, and other topics.
Renée DiResta is a social media researcher and the author of Invisible Rulers: The People Who Turn Lies Into Reality. Her work focuses on adversarial abuse online, including child safety issues, spammers and scammers, and influence campaigns run by state actors. From 2019 to 2023, she was the Technical Research Manager at the Stanford Internet Observatory, a cross-disciplinary program of research, teaching, and policy engagement for the study of abuse in current information technologies.
Renée has advised Congress and the executive branch, as well as academic, civic, and business organizations on technology policy and trust & safety topics, including information operations, generative AI, election security, data transparency, and child safety.

The spilt in the comments is interesting. Ultimately, I am just sad. We now live in a world where there is a diminishing return in truth seeking. You either spend countless hours to find base reality, or you are forced to dismiss all opinions because of the likely fact that…most people with opinions didn’t spend the countless hours required to find base reality/the truth.
In other words-you can’t be certain. You can never be certain that what you believe is actually the base truth.

30:00 That's a terribly disingenuous reading of the Twitter files. Nobody gives a shit if the government or the authorities want to amplify their message. We care about them censoring people who don't agree with their message. This is an issue of civil rights.

This particular woman carefully constructs her language so that she does not lie, but does mislead.
She was asked, some years ago, by Harris, "Did the Russians interfere with the election, and increase the number of Trump votes". She gave a resounding "Yes". And it was unchallenged by Harris.

Can't take the family to SF anymore due to drug addicts sh**ting and pi**ing everywhere, including in front of your family; aggressive, violent panhandling, needles everywhere. Can't park in the city without your window getting smashed, even if you have nothing visible through the window. Fresno sucks. Bakersfield sucks. Stockton sucks. Sac is actually not bad. Taxes are some of the highest in the nation. Gas is the highest of anywhere I travel in the country, besides some places in Florida. Food cost is probably around 20% higher than any other state I visit. Crime rates aren't great. Massive wildfires in my area almost every year.

When someone tells you that a novel treatment is "safe", then they are lying (or so ignorant as to make no difference).
Once I clock you as a liar, then I will dig deeper. If I find that you don't have good reason to be dosing people who have already been infected twice, and that we still do not have age or health stratification for the shots, then I know that something isn't right.

On any given day, with no obvious local or global crisis, I find the people around me in fear based, fight/flight mode. South Africa has a history of huge divisiveness and oppression so it makes sense that we are one of the most violent countries in the world. If the average populace remains distrusting of virtually everybody around them and therefore in fear, the higher thinking brain is not activated. We therefore base our perceptions on the fight /flight brain capacity which can only shame and blame others and see virtually everything and everyone as dangerous. Add Covid to the midst and if there is any scientific knowledge or logic present, it is blown to oblivion. It is not surprising then, that many people (likely across the globe) cannot process information based on research or academic studies. When the fear based brain has become fixated on it's defences, it is a survival mechanism. So any and possibly all information that is not understood, or that does not at least on superficial hearing, align with the fixated beliefs, is seen as life threatening. Perhaps what we are learning as a species in the internet era, is that we need to change our education system to include psycho-social education and critical thinking skills.

Basically, all of us rube idiots without degrees and fancy titles... Well we were right all along, right from the beginning. And Sam just can't let that go. It's not so much that he cares about the institutions as much as he cares about his own reputation as well as keeping his peers in positions of power because he and his peers know how we should all think and behave because they're smart and we're dumb. If the establishment falls apart then he won't have as much influence on society and we can't have that because everyone who doesn't agree with Sam is dumb.

Is Sam ok? I've been out of Sam's orbit for a while. I've read all his books and used to listen to his podcast regularly. I've learned a great deal from him about religious criticism, philosophy, and meditation. I've always found him to deal well with conflict and remain pretty calm and level headed in debate settings.
But having listened to some recent podcasts, I'm very confused by views of the man I'm listening to.
Sam Harris now indulges in "anti-woke" talking points every podcast, talking points that are indiscernible from incel internet culture, Fox News, Daily Wire, and other red pill adjacent tribes.
This man who once warned against the failures of tribalism is now parroting and regurgitating the same woke-panic phrases you find from Andrew Tate followers.
What the hell happened to Sam? Is it his association with the "Intellectual Dark Web"? Jordan Peterson rubbing off on him? I really don't get it, I think it might be something personal at this point.
I know people were mean to him on twitter, and perhaps he's still subconsciously feeling persecuted by this so called woke mob, but for a guy that has a meditation app, he really doesn't seem emotionally stable on this topic.
I know no one is perfect, and it's naive to assume that I'd agree with anyone on every topic, but Sam's current obsession with the silly culture war stuff is really alarming. It's also disappointing to hear Harris call anyone he disagrees with confused. It's like he's incapable of taking legitimate criticism.
I guess I can understand why he's off social media. It would be maddening to hear the unfiltered thoughts of thousands of people. I just wish he would be a better steward of his own mind and not fall for the social conservative propaganda machine.
I've been a huge fan of Sam's work for years, it helped me escape fundamentalist religion. It's just disappointing to see Sam falling down the red pill rabbit hole.

I took Trump to mean that she started playing up one aspect of her background for political reasons. He was trying to criticize the whole idea of diversity taking precedence over objective competence. (I know Sam Harris is no fan of that, either.) The way he said it sounded tacky and shocking, as usual. And yet...Well, is there an honest person on the planet who believes that gender and race had nothing to do with Biden choosing her? Hell, the media is talking openly and jokily about which white guy she's going to choose!
In a way, it was quite bold of Trump to choose Vance instead of following the PC Playbook's recommendations. I wouldn't be surprised if the sole reason he chose Vance was to spurn the new rules.

    • @davegold
      @davegold Месяц назад

Calling someone a diversity hire is a serious insult that attacks someone's competence, identity, and integrity (for taking underserved benefits). If the insult can't be justified then it shouldn't be made and Trump couldn't justify it. Representation existed before diversity and it's often good to fall back to that concept. This tells us that Biden, Harris, and her vp choice can justifiably represent different groups but Trump can't attack Harris for representing those groups.

Kamala Harris has made it clear that she supports funding police departments to handle serious crimes. She has never supported the "Defund the Police" movement. Harris's background as a prosecutor and District Attorney involved working closely with police to reduce gun violence in low-income neighborhoods and keep kids in school. As California Attorney General, she also provided police with greater autonomy based on the needs of their districts.
Harris advocates for investing in public safety departments within communities to address mental health, homelessness, and substance abuse, reducing the reliance on police for all societal issues. This approach balances law enforcement with community support services, aiming for a comprehensive solution to public safety.

The Democrats put all their eggs in one basket hoping for a comprehensive immigration model when Biden took office, but found any reform would be blocked in congress. @@ejjames7786 The first is an accusation of being very out of touch with race, which is true.
The second is an accusation of cluelessness and probable underlying racism, not that the comments themselves were racist. As in: if you say the things that Trump did, you are at least clueless, and (here is where I'm departing from what Sam actually said, this is just my opinion) you are _likely_ contemptuous of people you don't understand such that you cross the line into racism.
I'll go back to what I said previously and broaden it: that Kamala Harris would emphasize different identities at different times is completely normal for politicians, and it is actually completely normal for everyone. This isn't even just a racial thing. When Kamala Harris gets in front of a moderate crowd, she may emphasize her past in law enforcement. When I hang out with my friends, I'll make political or religious jokes that I wouldn't make in front of my parents.
That one would not notice this thing about humans is a sign of cluelessness. And that one would double down on this in racial terms to me indicates some kind of pathology around race.... But it's also possible, I suppose, that he's just that wildly clueless and that wildly uninterested in understanding other people.
