  • The Sigma 18-50 f2.8 DC DN is the smallest, lightest and least expensive Sony E-Mount Aps-c Lens available! But did they have to cut any corners to make it that way? In this practical hands-on review of the new Sigma lens, we'll take a look at the video and photo capabilities of this lens by actually going out and putting it to work and testing it in real-world situations.

Got mine last week and already put it through it’s paces, in a sports shoot and indoor event. Paired with an ZV E10, OMG this is a beautiful combo! I am seriously questioning the existence of half my gear closest fill with big FF bodies and lenses! (Yes, this combo is that good!). Yes, certain use cases at the extremes will probably benefit from more expensive gear. But for the vast majority of use cases for most people, this lens (and a ZV E10) is more than enough! :). After 20+ years of dealing with massive camera gear, my arms and back thanks this! And for those claiming no OSS….it’s light enough that you can go get an Crane M2 if you really wanted. It would still be cheaper and lighter than other solutions.

I believe this is a revolutionary lens in sony apsc ecosystem. All the other zoom options were kindda big and heavy and also pricy. Just wished it was 16mm wide then it was just perfect! I hope sigma got a plan to make wide and tele versions soon too!

I think they made it exactly as wide and long and fast as they could while staying within the size limitations they had set for them selves.
If it were even a little wider or longer or faster, it would have to be bigger.

I am amazed at how you record videos, that hike, with the variety of shots, place a tripod, record myself passing in front of the tripod, picking up the tripod again... instead of 4 hours, I would have taken me twice for sure!! I sure would have had to bring the sleeping bag just in case it was getting too late 🤣
I don't have much experience shooting videos, although I would love to know how ... watching videos like this, it overwhelms me and gives me the feeling that I am going to come home with a lot of footage impossible to put together and create such a wonderful story as the one you have made.

As a stills photographer I don’t think stabilization is really an issue with this lens. I’ve been in low light situations with the iso boosted, and everything came out pretty decent as long as I kept a shutter speed of 1/160 or faster. I love the color and I love what the image looks like through this glass. It feels like I upgraded my a6400. This is now my go to lens when I leave the house. It’s not a perfect lens, but it’s darn good enough for me. I’m very impressed with the sigma glass I have so far.

I LITERALLY ran around my house when I saw the review from Arthur R! Great to see your take on it. I was going to go with the Sigma 16-35mm with the MC-11 adapter for my a6600, but I am loving the form factor of this lens. I believe Sigma was trying to pack as many features into a smaller form factor. They wanted the width of the lens to not extend past the height of an a6x00 / sigma body. For a fraction of the Sony 16-55 2.8, its a no brainer.

I know it’s been awhile since you did this review but thank you. I decided to try out the newest A6700 this past summer and bought this lens used. Since I already own full size full frame cameras and lenses I went small and got this. Sigma rewarded me by announcing the small brother 10-18/2.8 DC DN Contemporary to pair with it for an ultra light kit. Body has OK stabilization so a great travel/hiking combo. Admit still drawn to A7CII or A7CR since it also so small. The full frame 16-28/2.8 and 28-70/2.8 DG DN Contemporaries are both smaller/lighter than the APS-C Tamron and Sony lenses as well. Just not as small and compact as these small Sigmas. Take care.

Although this len is meant to be a compact and buget one, your composition and grading make it feel like 10 times more expensive. It's unbelievable you did the whole video example using only the a6600 + 18-50 f2.8. Did you use a gimbal in this one?
And to my eyes it's kinda sharp enough lol. I'm watching your video on a 32" 2K monitor and don't find this len's sharpness an issue. Also the bokeh is beautiful.
My reference for sharpness comparison is the Sigma 16mm 1.4, which I only use for video shooting though. And it doesn't look sharper than this one. Are videos always gonna be less sharp than photos?

I found a used minty 18-50mm f/2.8 Sigma lens for my A6600. I love this little lens because of its weight and size. It is a joy to carry around and the image quality is excellent. However, if I were to shoot portraits, I prefer a slightly longer focal length. My 28-75mm f/2.8 Tamron is a better choice for me when I am shooting people. The 75mm or 112.5mm equivalent is just about the minimum I like to use for head and shoulder portraits. However, my Sony 85mm f/1.8 is also nice lightweight addition to the 18-50mm when I know I will be shooting head and shoulder portraits, The 127.5mm equivalent is great and the f/1.8 aperture allows me to blur out busy backgrounds. It is also a nice fast short telephoto addition to the Sigma.

    • @richardpcrowe
      @richardpcrowe Год назад

After shooting with this dandy little lens for several months - it basically lives on my A6600. I am quite happy with the image quality and don't miss the lack of stabilization. However, I do wish that it had internal focusing for use on a gimbal.
Another wish is that Sigma would come out with a matching lightweight longer focal length zoom lens with a constant aperture. A 70-150mm f/2.8 (or even f/4.0) lens for APSC cameras would be a dandy lens for a second APSC camera. If Sigma came out with a lens like this constructed with the same materials - I would carry that combination (I have an A6400 also) all over the world.
Yes, I have the 70-350mm Sony as well as the 70-200mm f/4 Sony but, I would sacrifice the extra length of the 70-350mm for a constant, wider aperture and I would sacrifice some of the focal range of the 70-200mm and also sacrifice the full frame capability of that lens for a lighter weight lens.
If someone needs a wider focal length lens, the little Samyang/Rokinon f/2 12mm UWA lens would be great. I owned a manual focus version of that lens and wish that I had not sold it.
When traveling, I always like to have a second camera along. I damaged a Canon DSLR climbing a ridge in Alaska but, my second camera body saved the trip for me.
A fellow tourist on a trip to China fell on a rough street in Xian and broke his Nikon body. He was not able to shoot any pictures until we arrived in Hong Kong where he bought a replacement body.
I learned my lesson regarding traveling with just one camera.

How sharp is it compared to the Sigma 30 f2.8 and the Sigma 30 f1.4 ? I will sell the Sigma 30 f2.8 if this zoom lens is sharper, as I will then have the advantage of having a good AF. The sigma f2.8 can't use the full AF-C capabilities of the A6400.

I shoot a lot of video and the VC (stabilization) on the Tamron might be better that Sony's in this price range - terrific lens overall. As I have the 16/50 kit (oss), not sure I'd get this before a few more primes, but it looks like a terrific alternative - nice to see Sigma expanding the the crop users, though would be a game changer if they worked some stabilization in, as their stills are always sharp - keep up the good work!
