Just got my Sony A6700 and I ordered this lense to go with it because of your review. Wow this lense is truly capable and it fits so nicely with an APS-C camera. It's crisp, the bokeh is amazing, it's quiet, its autofocus is fast. It's such a fantastic value and I can't recommend it enough.

I dont know if we have to say it is “Saved” Their camera line is excellent and while it may not have the same body tech as Fuji (right now) they have way more lens availability and third party accessory support. Sony built this category and I doubt they will be the ones to lose it.

@@dubenick I'm a Sony aps-c owner and I literally hope they lose their own line. Their business model and handling is utter bullshit, from the color science to horrible menus and their remote app/mobile app is simply abysmal. The cameras struggle with some incredibly trivial, basic tasks which one would take for granted. And all that is topped by either crappy native lens, or overpriced Zeiss-tagged lenses. Naturally, no OSS on any third party lenses which are actually worth their money and not overpriced.
So yeah.. not seeing a lot of reasons to stick with them, especially considering how Sony is infamous for dropping support, changing their ways at the first sign of profit going down. They've become a really shitty company in the last decade or so.

Finally! (😁 ) I made my choice between Sony 16-55mm or Sigma 18-50mm
Last week, I order the the Sony 15-55mm for my Sony A6000 (I did mind to pay for the best quality lenses) I wait a week without any news. So I cancel my order to switch to this Sigma for many positive point: The price is $$$ vs $$$$ for Sony, Because I don't do video at all, I have no need to pay for steady F2.8 , the Sigma is much lighter, the quality is only a touch higher on Sony.
But, I will miss the focus manual/automatic button (I do have it on my Sony 18-135mm. Great range)
Another very positive difference for me is all Sigma lenses have 7 years guaranty in CANADA! 😁 // Thanks Arthur.

Thanks for another trusted review Arthur. Congrats to the Sigma team for creating a high performance, compact travel zoom at such an affordable price point. No IS, no problem for photos. Let the shutter fly and, where higher ISO is needed, nothing a little NR in post can't handle. For devoted aps-c video shooters, you probably have a gimbal already to obtain those buttery smooth, stabile shots. If no gimbal, it's a an upgrade definately worth considering. Better capability than most IS, and they are getting more affordable and more compact.
    Congratulations your growing family Arthur!

One of the few lenses that has produced extremely sharp images corner to corner, comes in handy when cropping. Also can be used on a gimbal since it doesn’t extend. Look careful at the pictures and you will see where the focal plane is on the wonderful model. In one shot, the wife's nose tip is in focus, in the other pix from the competing lens, the nose is a little out and the focal plane is closer to the eyes. So, I conclude that these are all incredible lens. I'm going to get the Sigma for my son's camera as he doesn't have a zoom in this focal length range. I am so stoked. I'd get one but I have the 18-105mm zoom and it does fine for me and I love the internal zoom feature. But...if I didn't, the Sigma would be in my inventory.

Great review. I just bought this for my a6300 and I agree totally with your recommendation. Portability/lightweight for hiking and skiing is a major consideration for my own use (I'm fed up of carrying a huge DSLR up mountains!) This lens is perfect for this and daily walk around use. The compromises on zoom range and lack of OS are totally offset by the low price. Stabilization is also less relevant at wide aperture and at the shorter focal lengths so I don't miss it. The lens is elegantly simple, small and produces stunning images. What's not to like?

If you're not living in the bahamas with Bright sunlight all day long you will miss OSS.
It's not that I can't take pictures without it - I know the rules and how to use it unstabilized. Rocked a 50mm Minolta for a year. But it's just frustrating when you have to really work hard for pictures when you know that there is a better solution for it.

It's funny, normally I would complain about 18mm not being wide enough as well, but the Sigma is so much physically shorter than the Sony and Tamron equivalents, I bet the 18mm appears wider than one would expect, simply due to the fact that the end of the lens is farther away from the subject. Well done Sigma!

I do love the colors and contrast on my Sigma 30mm F1.4. So, how would you compare the colors and contrast on the new 18-50 to the Sigma prime trio? I think it starts at 18mm so as not to kill the Sigma 16mm f1.4. Paying 2/3 the price of the 18-50 2.8 for a prime, soley for the extra stops would be a hard sell on its own - if you combine that sell with the extra 2mm (which is alot on the wide end of focal lengths) then it keeps that lens more relevant too. Considering this lens is f2.8, even if it went to 16mm, it still wouldn't replace the 16mm prime lens because of the F1.4 capability alone.
I plan on doing the 16mm f1.4 for night/low light, astro, night street photography, the 56mm f1.4 for dedicated portrait photography and have this lens as a travel walk about lens. This will be my 'Sigma Trio". 😉

@@mrspeeddemon727 Two things I like about the Sigma 16mm over the Sony 16 - 55 f2.8. The Sigma has nearly no distortion in the corners, whereas the Sony does at 16mm. Secondly, the faster Sigma is marvelous in low light. I get amazing depth of field with the Sigma even at f5.6. Despite all this, the Sony lens is so versatile. I shoot it mostly at f4 to f8 in its full zoom range and its sharpness is second to none. In other words, both are superior lenses with different strengths. As I have come to know, you can get excellent results with most gear today if you know the limitations and work within those parameters. The difference is that normally the superior gear has a wider range of excellence.
