How generous and thoughtful of Edgar Bergen to entertain the cast with Charlie McCarthy.

This confirms what I have thought for a long time. If you listen to Earl‘s closing remarks for “the revel“, you can tell that it was the end of the series. I’m glad Scott disclosed this.

An exceptional episode and I look forward to seeing Scott Hamner on another episode. Thinking about the question how much of the stories were true; to me what is most important is the brilliance of capturing the feel of a time, of a place, with the realism of the hardships of the depression, the strength of character and resolve. A shout out to the writers, to Earl Hamner's vision, the directors and cast to bring a family to life.

I'm so thankful for Earls writings. He truly changed my life due to MaryEllen being a tomboy, becoming a nurse and just being a good family member. I was abused and my siblings and the Watson's shaped my life to be long and kind. I'm a child abuse survivor and I also became a Registered Nurse. I'm so thankful for the experience to learn from the shows love for each other and especially how the children grew in to Adulthood. Feel truly blessed for the memories and I still watch in the morning and afternoon till the 6 pm news comes on. God bless you all.

Judy, well that opened up the floodgates :) OK, I do indeed have some questions for Scott about writing and yes, when I learned he was a writer, I got SO excited because I'm always interested in that difficult and challenging craft. I promise not to overwhelm him so feel free to pick and choose. These questions have been in the back of my mind for months hoping you would get a writer on the show!
    1) What interested you in writing in the first place because you also got to see editing and directing and so on. What made you choose that first and did you ever experiment with the other skills on a set?
    2) Was writing what you expected it to be or were there some culture shocks involved?
    2) In the three episodes you wrote, which ones, if you recall, were pitches and which ones were assignments from other writers?
    3) Do you recall how much of your scripts were edited/changed and did that prove to be difficult to your confidence level?
    4) What was the culture of writers in general meaning the attitudes and the expectations and so on because every trade/career has an set of rules/expectations?
    6) How much time were you given to write a script and did you ever feel that pressure of meeting a deadline?
    7) Did you often work with other writers in collaboration or were you more of a solo writer?
    8) Did you ever take classes to learn your craft or was it all 'on the job' training?
    9) I imagine that typewriters were the mainstay of scripts back in the day but I've known a lot of writers who do legal paper and pen (or pencil). What was your personal choice and did it change over the years?
    10) Can you describe the writers room on the Waltons and compare/contrast it to other shows you worked on.
    11) What is the most challenging part of writing for you and did you ever feel burnout?
    12) Did you ever have a script you were really proud of only to see it, well, hacked to death and what was shown on screen was not what you wrote but still got credit for it?
    13) How does pay work as a writer. Are you salary or by the episode and so on?
    14) Did you ever have an actor approach you about the script demanding changes, etc?
    15) Who is in charge of the writer's room and how much micromanagement is involved?
    16) Do writers ever get to work with the director/producer or is it that the script is written and sent off and that's it?
    17) I've always felt that writers do NOT get enough credit for their efforts. Do you feel the same way as it's mostly the director and actors (no disrespect to those fine professions).
    18) Finally did you ever have interest in directing an episode?
    19) Finally, can you clarify head-writer, associate head writer, story and teleplay, story editor terms?
That's all and thank you Judy if you made it through that entire list :)

I'm in season 9 of my current binge watch ..I'll be on the lookout for the episodes that he wrote. The one great thing i loved about the Waltons is the secondary or side stories within an episode. I think that was something they did better than any other shows on TV.

Thanks, Judy. Your summary is exciting & full of gems already! I think we’d love if Scott would visit you once a year. We’d send plenty of questions!! (I’d love to hear his own recollections for hours, even without questions posed!)
My (first two ;) questions are: Did his Dad feel appreciated, I hope respected, too, for The Waltons ~ or for all of his work? (Or did the industry’s shifting trends or callousness work against that over time?) And, were there any stories Mr. Hamner still longed to tell? Thank you! And I hope you & your Waltons family had a great reunion, Judy!

I’ve always been puzzled by John Boy’s expression in The Homecoming when the father is back and the children are all opening their presents. Did he think he didn’t receive one? John says to him “why don’t you open yours” or something like and he opens his notebooks, but right before that he he is looking at his father with an almost worried and confused expression.

I always thought he was just looking at his father with such admiration. He couldn’t care less about his gift but the joy and peace his father brought home. His mother was totally relieved and another Christmas miracle had occurred! I’ve watched the Homecoming so many times and love that scene the most!

Judy, I sent a letter to Scott last fall, not knowing it was right at the time Jane passed. I don't know if he got the letter. I met him at the 40th anniversary. Earl proudly introduced him. The best one Scott wrote was the one about television. Jim--Bob made the set where everyone in the area could see the broadcast from Boatwright. I never understood why NBC did those 3 reunion movies in the 80s. Judy, some people said Earl could have taken the money and run. But the show was better because he stayed with it. Ask Scott about Ora Lee Mann, Earl's maternal grandmother. I may be kin to her. My maternal grandmother had the same maiden name. Her grandparents were from Richmond and Charlottesville. It may go back to Surrey, England.

Judy, on the show you had my Older sisters temperament. Being the only boy with 3 sisters, I can tell you that my oldest sister allways told-us all what to do. Now that I’m in my 50s she still tells us all off. Lol. When we would watch the Walton’s every Thursday night I’d allways say Eileen you do realize that you are just like .Mary Ellen Walton. Monday was little house on the prairie and Thursday was the Waltons. My mom would give all four of us 50 cents on Mondays and Thursdays we would walk into town and get 2 candy bars each. They were 25 cents each back in the 70s. And we would save them to enjoy while watching our favorite shows. These nights are apart of my childhood memories that I’ll have until the day I die. Laying on the floor our eyes fixated on the tv was just apart of those warm memories that I wrap my self around when the world is cold and nasty. Thank you for being apart of those happy and wonderful memories. I’m sure you will never see this post as you probably get thousands of messages every day. But on the off chance that you do, thank you for making Thursday nights so specialize

Wow! Where to start?! I've always wondered how a professional writer goes about writing. How long did it take for him to complete a story? Did he ever get writer's block & how did he overcome that? What was his writing process like? Did he have to have complete silence & everyone out of the house or could he write with lots of noise? Could he write anywhere at any time or just in his office? Did he listen to music while writing & if so, what genre of music? Did he find it difficult to write during certain seasons? (Some people get Seasonal Affective Disorder where they can't function the way they would normally or get sad during winter/gloomy times so that's why I asked. I'm not asking if he had S.A.D.). Did he have trouble writing about certain topics moreso than others? What kinds of things did he prefer writing about regardless of weather or not it ended up in a script? How many more unpublished works does he have, if any & if so, what would it take to get them published? Did he have a set schedule to write? (For the Waltons). What was the favorite episode(s) of you & your siblings of the Waltons? Did you ever not like anything he wrote about on the Waltons such as growing pains or situations you kids ever went through & suddenly there it is on the screen for all to see? Did you & your siblings ever have to think I better watch what I do or say or it'll end up on the Waltons? I also want to say that I LOVED his Twilight Zone episodes. They always had some form of moral consequence to them. At first, one might not think he could/would write such things, but when you look more closely, it's clear that his style is all over them. I loved all of them. When Earl narrarates before & after an episode, he has such a calming gentlemanly voice. Was he like that at home? When the kids had problems, did he calmly talk to them in that same voice? It seems so unlikely he'd ever yell about anything, but I'm sure he would get upset about some things every now & again, but I can't picture him yelling & arguing. lol Is it difficult to become a writer these days? This was very interesting. I am glad Earl’s son was involved with the Walton’s. I guess good writing ran in the family. Kudos for that. You mentioned the way scripts were written for radio shows and then moving to TV. Many of the old soap operas as they were called began on the radio and the good vibes were able to transition to TV. I recall my mom listening to soap operas as she did household chores. Was Earl’s son involved with any of the soaps which had transitioned to TV? I am still a fan of the Walton’s and I ran into a similar issue when I went to college. It really is a small world. Thanks, Judy.

Very much enjoyed the recap of your time with Scott Hamner. One thing that caught my attention and curiosity was when he mentioned going and watching the Foley artist create sounds. That got me thinking about this process. Would the Foley artist have a general list of the sounds to create or were there notations in the script for (insert sound here) so they knew what to create? Would they use / watch the actual film segments they were creating sounds for so timing was correct? Fascinating the simple items Foley artists used to make such great sounds.
    Again Thank You Judy!

Judy, I have a question for Scott and you. There were so many different writers and directors of the series over its nine years , did Earl exercise any control over either who the directors would be or any script approval, or was that just left to the production company. Was there any shows that Earl especially liked or disapproved of.

I’m so excited about Scott Hamner coming onto your show! My question for Scott is whether he used the framework of the Waltons for any soaps he worked on. I don’t recall if he worked on As the World Turns, but the Snider family “somewhat” resembled the Waltons. They had many children; the eldest (Seth) is a writer; Emma, the matriarch has similar characteristics of Olivia; and Holden had the sensitivity of John Boy. Maybe it’s a coincidence?

I'm curious if Scott considered having a greater acting role in the series beyond just being an extra. Was it frowned upon because it may look like nepotism? It seems like they could have written scripts to include a character of his age. But maybe he preferred to focus on writing primarily.

Suffice it to say wonderful memories of Edgar Bergman and Charlie McCarthy and The Homecoming. How admirable of Earl to take less pay to finalize all the scripts. And I loved the final episode of The Waltons. You're wonderful, Judy. Question for Scott. Was his father a story teller verbally, such as around the dinner table or on holidays or at bedtime. Or on family vacations and if so I imagine he created all the stories he told. Were they based on his childhood and family? Thanks judy. ❤🎉❤ LOVE The Waltons. Spectacular! I don't think I realized Scott wrote any episodes! So, now, of course, I'll revisit those Seasons! Talent sure runs in The Hamner Family! I read in several biographies of Earl that he loved to fish! I wonder if Scott accompanied his Dad on any fishing trips and if he, too, likes still to fish? I wonder what Scott thinks of all us Walton's/Hamner/Cast and Crew fans? I wonder if Scott can share any stories about his Dad's writing for Falcon Crest? Re: the origin of The Baldwin Sisters being two ladies from the wrong side of the tracks: there is one scene in the original Homecoming that alludes ever so lightly to the sordid side of Bootlegging. Its a scrupulous detail perhaps. While both Olivia and Esther are appalled by the bootlegging, the consensus is that The Baldwin Sisters are two sweet old ladies who make their Daddy's recipe as if it were a sweet liquour and genteel pasttime. When the original actors portraying The Baldwins in The Homecoming are in Ike's store trying on hats, the one sister in a rather rough, grabby type voice minus the syrupy sweetness says, "And, uh, give me 6 yards of that French Silk!" I am not positive, but I believe this request follows a speech from the Sisters that their Daddy's recipe provides for them in their old age. Well, its very subtle ~ but the rough delivery of the silk request plus 6 yards is a lot of fabric for a 1930s dress during the height of the G. Depression when most in the Appalachians wwre wearing flour bag dresses, and French Silk sounds like a luxury fabric! And, so, there's a littke more worldliness to the sweet sister bootleggers! Its the only example I have spotted of a literary nod to perhaps the coarsness and def underworld activityed of the original sisters upon whom the characters were based. Then when the sisters were recast with Helen Kleeb and Mary Jackson any sordid hints were completely gone and replaced with gentility. I love the original actress who requested the French Silk: she gave that carefully crafted scene a superb performance! Very highly skilled! ❤ My father did something like Mr Hamner's father! It must be the humor of that era! I was very small and my father ran to the window and exclaimed, " There's the Easter Bunny!" Of course, I believed him but the Bunny was gone by the time I looked out the window! Dad's ~ honestly! Dear Scott ~ thank you so much for sharing your Dad with all of us and your stories and friendship too! We truly revere Mr Hamner! He made the world a better place! Bless you! Thank you so very much, Judy! Much love to Waltons everywhere! ❤

Good stuff, Judy. Much enjoyed your commentary on writers and story lines. All we've ever come to know about the nuts and bolts of writing is Laughter on the 23rd Floor and Dick Van Dyke show. However, the Foundation Interviewees include Earl Hamner, Jr. [There are other writers, some more rewarding than others--I especially liked Madelyn Martin and Bob Carroll, Jr., and Schiller and Weiskopf.] Your commentary provides a credible addition to what we know about The Waltons writing process. I do hope that at some point you and your castmates would agree to be interviewed by the Foundation. You have much to add both individually and collectively. [NB: IT WOULD ALSO BE A RELIABLE RECORDATION IN YOUR OWN WORDS unlike other productions that can manipulate quotes and a "Now the Story Can Be Told" into something totally wrong, unkind, and unfavorable.]

It seems that most "T.V. & movies kids" who either had some exposure to in front of the camera or behind it did grow up to write or do other jobs behind the camera. If only bc those piqued their interests as those kids so well, they wanted to learn more. Of course one might say Scott Hamner was learning his Father's Business.
