I am an African American mom and my husband and I grew up with the Waltons. We even took on some of the attributes of the family, like saying good night to everyone, praying together and at mealtimes. I still watch it at almost 60 years old. Our children 25 - 32! It was a show of substance and value!!! Love it!!❤👍🏾

I'm engaged in my first revisit of the series since its inception. I watched it as a kid for a few years, but never caught the reunions in the 90's, and it just went off my radar.
I started about 2-3 months ago and am watching season 6 - so much I forgot, but key appearances and events send me right back to 1972-1977.
Judy Norton has a RUclips channel which includes interviews she holds for her on-screen siblings.

This show transcended many barriers that sadly would be present nowadays. I was addicted to the show back in the 70s, even though our parents strictly imited our TV watching time. My brother always wanted to watch Hawaii 5 O or Mannix, but he sometimes lost out to the rest of us wanting to watch The Waltons. Such a good show with authentically real values worth emulating. 😊

I can't believe Richard Thomas is 70 years old!!! I just went to Wikipedia and found that out. That show was one of the best family shows ever!!! Little House on the Prairie was another great one. We sure could use another show like this, especially in this day and age. What a blessing that show was.

I agree because the show cover how the great depression and war and growing up poor but having family and God and general store and a one room class people needs to learn this is what it was like in the 20"s all the way up to 1980 people dropped out of school to help their families and a lot got on drugs and some went to work in factory's others got GEDs .
But now a lot of people don't know what family or God even church is

I'm now 64. I watch the Walton's every chance I get. I've got so many of the series recorded and I don't erase them. My heart goes out to everyone of the "Walton" children. To see them on one of the most famous television shows ever, and then to hear how all there lives have turned out after the great and wonderful show ended. My love and prayers goes out to Erin and Ben. The trials of Ben losing his wife just brought tears to my eyes and pain to my heart. Erin for the sickness that she endured from something that should never have been invented or not educating young women of the possible risks. How sad. All and all, I've never met any of those people, but I pray that God will continue to enrich their lives. They brought so much to into our own lives. Each and everyone of them has been an inspiration in my own life. God bless to all of you.

When I was an over the road truck driver, I remember driving in Virginia, by the mountains, and seeing a sign with an arrow pointing to the mountain behind it saying "Walton family house on the mountain mountain museum", and if I wasn't driving a semi, I WOULD have gone up the mountain to view the house! I grew up watching them on Thursday nights on CBS. I was only allowed 1 hour of TV per day, and I saved the 1 hour on Thursdays just for The Waltons. Nowadays all the kids want are violence and rudeness, when they actually need more shows like The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie! They taught us about: family, love, sticking together and the REAL American way!

My stepmother said her life was alot like the Waltons, she had 15 siblings though. The children picked cotton before school and after school. They bathed on the weekends in the creek and washed out of a large bucket of water during the week. She never regretted her life growing up. Her and her family has passed away but I always think of them fondly.

And I am crying just about every episode too, except for the ones (and there are plenty) with terrible actresses who make me laugh. It is a terribly well-written show, and completely heartfelt and good. I was the youngest of 7 kids and there is so much about it that is evocative of my childhood and my family and so much good advice on how to live a good simple life, no matter what your struggles and hardships. When I hear that great song it makes me think of my hero grandpa, I was 8 years old when he died in 1977! I would stay the night with him & my granny on occasion, we lived a mile or so across the “holler” I would sleep with my grandpa, my grandparents slept in separate beds & rooms! He came by that evening in his truck & asked if I wanted to stay the night with them, I remember it was in July & hot!! My dad which that was his parents, wouldn’t let me spend the night with them & kind of glad because my grandpa had a massive heart attack that night in bed & if my dad would have let me stay the night that night I would’ve been in the bed with him!!! He taught me to drive when I was 7, drive the tractor 🚜 too, work on the farm with him & the chicken houses as well! Before I was school age he drove a school bus for the school that I would later attend in my home town but before I was of age to go to school, I went on his bus route with him & would spend the day with him & some other older men & learned a lot at a young age!!! Needless to say I’ve missed him ever since

Hi David. I lost my dad when I was 25. I got to spend 17 yrs with my mom & step dad helping them out & they helped me also.. He died at the end of March & my mother died 4 months latter.
Then the garbage comes out of the woodwork. The ones that come around like buzzards. They weren't ever around to help out but they got away with doing ALOT of under handed stuff & taking anything nailed down.
I just pray for them because KARMA will catch up with them one day.
I just remember all the happy times we had, the holidays, birthdays ect....Yup you can be sad missing a loved one (s) dearly but you can also be happy thinking of the many good times.
The best ghost picture I ever took was at a soldier's funeral. I served in the Army too.. In the picture you could clearly see an almost transparent young man hugging his crying mother that was sitting by her son's coffen. She said the picture really gave her comfort.
I believe that we'll see those we love again. Again I know what it is like to miss loved ones. Try to remember good times & know that they may be looking out for you in their own way, maybe by having taught you to be strong & stand on your 2 feet. Take care.

I am the last of 9 and we were poor, but didn't really know it. My parents provided what we needed, we grew up in a city so we didn't grow our own foods or have a family business to get us by, my father was a cook and my mom was disabled by the time I came along, 7 years between me and the 8th child. My mom was a seamstress and she would sew all of our clothes and food was cooked for us. I watch the reruns on this show everyday, and every time I watch an episode I pick up something new.

The Waltons and Little House were my personal inspirations for how *family* should be. I was determined to find the right husband and to raise our children (and grandchildren) with the same values and love. We did. We raised 4 children and have 5 beautiful loving grandchildren. We are a close, supportive, grateful, simple, loving and noisy family that get together at least once a week and all live very close to each other. These 2 shows literally gave my generation a solid example of how life SHOULD be.

It was easier to sweep it under the rug OR it was tolerated, out of ignorance, fear or people who didn't see anything wrong with it.

"John boy" says no one wanted to hear about poor people darning socks. Both my parents were alcoholics who didn't care if we had clothes on our backs or food in our bellies as long as they had their booze and cigarettes. If it had been just a one time thing I wouldn't remember this but it was all too frequent. So many nights supper was a bowl of milk with a slice of bread broken into pieces and maybe a little sprinkle of sugar. I cut out cardboard to put inside my shoes to cover a hole in the sole where it had worn out as I couldn't get another pair until they were too small to put on. I didn't grow fast so I wore some shoes for so long it was pathetic what they looked like. My coats wouldn't button and sleeves didn't cover my wrists. Kids at school teased me horribly. I only had two friends who looked past the fact that I was poor. I wore one dress for two years. Every couple days I washed it down n the sink, hung it up on the back of a chair to dry and then ironed it. There was no hiding the poverty I was in compared to the rest of my classmates. This changed only slightly when I got old enough to babysit and try to save it. Many times I'd come home and my dad would literally strong arm me to get my precious $1 or $1.50 that I'd earned. Almost every night going to bed I'd pray to die in my sleep because I was too much of a coward to kill myself. Anyways, this show was my escape from reality. We need more shows like this right now because I know there are still kids out there who need that escape. Sad but true.

Sandi, I'm glad that you did not die in your sleep. I wouldn't have learned of your story and I believe that the world would have been a little darker without you in it. I had an alcoholic father and step dad with PTSD from Vietnam. We spent most of the visits with Dad at his office (bar) and learned very early how to deal with people blowing smoke in our faces while we played pool. We also learned of back stabbing friends (all of my Dad's drunk cronies talking about him when he wasn't in the room.) Goodnight Mary Ellen.

My family was a lot like the Waltons. We didn't have a grandma and grandpa but there were actually more of us than there were of the Waltons because there were 9 of us and we also were extremely poor. My parents had lived through the Great Depression and when I was born they still had that depression mentality and that's how I was raised. When I say "depression mentality" I mean we were taught we must never waste anything. We didn't have to put a certain amount of food on our plate but once it was on our plate we were expected to eat it because it was unthinkable that we would let it be wasted. We ate fairly well because we grew a huge garden and mom canned LOTS of vegetables to see us through the winter but we very seldom had meat of any kind.
There was no air conditioner or even an electric fan to see us through the hot summers and the only heat in our house came from a pot bellied stove where we burned wood because coal cost money and we could go out back and cut all the wood we needed for free. We had no phone. We had no television. We had no running water and no indoor plumbing. Sometimes mom made our skirts and blouses and dresses and shirts out of patterned sacks that we got when we bought a 25 pound bag of flour or sugar. Things that Mom could not make by hand, like blue jeans and shoes came from a junk shop downtown. Such places would not be called "Thrift Stores" for another 30 or 40 years and an old lady named Taylor ran the junk shop and mom called it "Taylor's Fashion Shop" and she would say that we needed to go to "Taylor's Fashion Shop" to see if we could find a pair of shoes for my brother Jim.
By the way, there was none of the modern thinking that "if we buy something for one child we have to buy something for every child" because there simply was not enough money for that. If Mom and Dad could scrape together enough money to buy Jim a pair of shoes at the used clothing store, it did not even enter the mind of any of the rest of us that we would get shoes too. And, BTW, we were okay with that. I knew that when I was the one who desperately needed another pair of shoes it would be my turn to get shoes and Jim would know that he had already had his turn and this was NOT his turn.
I was talking to my oldest sister a while back and I asked her why she thought we were okay with just the child with the greatest need being the only one to get whatever. I asked her, 'Did Mom and Dad just ingrain in us that just because one child was getting something did not mean that all the rest of us would get something too?" My sister's response was, "We were just not jealous of each other." Maybe that's it. If Jim needed the shoes I was very happy for him to get the shoes and it never occurred to me to be upset because I was not getting shoes too!
By the way, we actually played...outside...with each other to entertain ourselves because we didn't have a TV to watch. We played games like Tag, Kick the Can, Hide N Seek, or Red Rover, Red Rover and I do not recall ever whining to Mom or Dad, "I'm bored". If any of us had said such a thing to them they would have handed us a hoe and said, "Go hoe the corn if you're bored." We also played board games like checkers (Dad made the checker board on a big piece of cardboard and we used white and dark colored buttons for checkers) or dominos and we read....a lot... and we all sang together while one of my older brothers played the guitar.
Our lives were not about STUFF. Our lives were about each other. When I see the Waltons, I see US and it makes me homesick.
