For those who don't know, this is a fictionalized story Truman Capote wrote about his childhood. Every character is real, however, including the young girl, who represents his long friendship with Harper Lee.
I wonder what became of Buddy going to military school since it isn't even mentioned in the later two stories?
Patty Duke my favorite, actress, tops. She is truly a great actress!
First time for me, seeing this wonderful film. Thanks so much. So nice to see Patty Duke too, acting her guts out! What an actress. Truman Capote could sure write stories! Wow! The part about the Whiskey and the dog and both of them getting a bit plastered, reminded me of my own childhood too. My mother liked to drink a beer now and then when she got migraine headaches. She would pour a can into her favorite mug. She would lie down on the sofa, our dachshund, named Fritz, would lie down behind her legs as she fell asleep on her side. Her mug of beer carefully balanced on her hip. He would then lick clean the half of leftover beer! He would get plastered, and wind up on his back, tongue hanging out, sauced on half of beer!
The other story I fondly remember was when I was and adult, working and living on my own, working night shift at a local ER. Dad got called up in his Guard unit to go to the Gulf War. Poor mom, she had been diagnosed with a seizure disorder and was not allowed to drive. I, at age 26 got my license finally, and spent a year before he was called up renting cars and driving to the beach and doing all kinds of driving, not knowing I would wind up being mom's driver, using my Dad's car while he was away. This is what happened. One night after a particular hard day of errands, we were watching how some of the compounds had been bombed over there. My paternal Grandmother called us up claiming she saw my Dad on TV on stretcher, killed by one of those Scud missiles! As Mom and I anxiously watched the news, Mom got a migraine, as did I. Well she made us Pina Colladas. But she was using 151 proof Vodka or Rum cannot remember which as I no longer drink, and 75 proof. I wanted the lessor of the two proofs. She got our drinks confused. I had been planning on taking the bus home, it was night time, and she accidentally got me so drunk, one half drink of 151 proof that I could not leave the house! Meanwhile, she had an entire 75 proof, and it had not helped her headache much. Then she realized her mistake! She swore me to secrecy to never tell Dad/her husband that she got me drunk in their home. I never told Dad until this past year, 2023, mom passed away in 2018 from Kidney Cancer. We were telling funny stories about Mom. He just looked at me, and laughed so hard.
Thanks for this movie, and thanks for bringing back good memories of my own childhood and adulthood. Crazy things do happen. I could easily related to this movie. I am now 60 years hold, and Mom really like Truman Capote too. Blessings from Oregon!

Wow, what a movie!! I've never seen this one before. Heartbreaking & heart-warming. Patty Duke was known as a stellar actress. I'll only remember her fondly!!! I only wish the overbearing sister didn't get her way bcs, although it probably was for the better, why does he have to grow up THAT soon? Those two shared such a strong & beautiful bond!!

Back a year later, and cry along with the thought of a small child being separated from the one he loves the most, and being sent to a Military Academy, where they will take his precious childhood away …Always loved Patty Duke, but each of these Actors are wonderful 👏👏👏❤
I remember watching this movie over twenty years ago with my father and grandma. They are both gone now but seeing this movie brought back great memories of Christmas with them.

I've known wonderful folks like Souk. Full of wisdom and remaining childlike in their joy and love. A great movie! Patty Duke was quite an actress. I still remember her portrayal of Helen Keller in the Miracle Worker.

This was actually Truman Capotes life. He loved his Aunt Sook. The neighbor was actually Nelle Harper Lee. When she wrote To Kill A Mockingbird, the little boy named Dill, was based on Truman Capote. The famed Robert Duvall played Boo Radley.
Except, while Lee might have been (probably was) a spinner of fantastical yarns, she at least seems to have come from a fairly conventional family. Her father was a judge; she and her sisters were able to attend college and even travel in Europe.

This is a wonderful movie. It put a lump in my throat. Letting one have wings is all so very important. He lived with good loving friends and that will go with him throughout his life. We all are in others lives for a time and a season. This boy is not buried. He has a future. Many great minds have been stimulated by nurturing.

I cried my eyes out. 😭 Such a beautiful and heartbreaking storey. I was sent to a nunnery boarding school at 4 years old. I was so scared, heartbroken and lonely. This storey reminds me of that time.

The sweetest, most tender story by Truman Capote.
I remember seeing another adaption from the 70's. Truman was the narrator, think it was Geraldine Page, who played Souk.
This based on Truman’s life as a young boy. Isn’t it bittersweet.
I know for sure and for certain this region is the Appalachian mountain anywhere from West Virginia down to Tennessee. Why does that woman reminds me of my Aunt Juanita/Julia Smith? She knew how to bake anything! She's from Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia, like my dad...
And to the rest of my KIN, too, bless yall! I'm proud to be an a descendant of a HILLBILLY!!!!!!
To enjoy the blessing of being loved like this little boy Buddy is something so precious. He did a wonderful job and of course Patty Duke was at her finest! Absolutely a wonderful story of pure love and faith.

This is based off Truman Capotes childhood in Monroeville, AL. The
neighbor girl is author Harper Lee. Lee would assist Truman in his research for "In Cold Blood." I'm sure most of what I put is known but maybe someone did not know the history.

I absolutely love how much pride the little girl has when Buddy gives her a gift, we used to be like that growing up in the 70s as kids we were always worried about what are friends thought or if we liked a boy it was a huge deal if we were misunderstood. Embarrassed about the smallest things.

Piper Laurie turned in another great performance here, as she gets(got?) older she managed to choose some excellent roles. But this is Patty Duke's picture, always excellent, always gives her performance everything she has.

This movie should have had a part 2! "How the boy grew up after his time away & came back home, etc...!" It was really good but it should have been extended with more!
This is one of Truman Capote's memories of his childhood. He wrote many in his various anthropologies.

If you liked this movie, please give yourself a real treat and watch the original version from 1966 starring Geraldine Paige. It's actually narrated by Truman Capote himself and follows his short story perfectly. I'm glad people enjoy this one but in my opinion the original just towers above it.

Patty Duke as souk how wonderful to see the love she and Buddy care for one another with little pup tagging alongside. Letting go is so hard but sometimes necessary in life, but knowing that love travels on in our hearts and minds even though apart, love does not die. This will be a movie to watch at Christmas from now on . Thank you

I remember Patty Duke fondly many many years ago in The Parent Trap where she played a twin (with herself).
This is the very best role I've ever seen her play,she is stellar! I love to see LOLs (Little Old Ladies) more positively portrayed. Even though she is obviously a little "different", she is strong, powerful and so loving. She has personally survived a difficult lifetime.
Hayley Mills played the twins in The Parent Trap. Patty Duke played identical cousins on her TV sitcom The Patty Duke Show. Her big debut was as a child playing Helen Keller in the Miracle Worker, for which she won an Oscar.

this is great movie love no child have be force go away from home so loved only child once to us force be send away love ones always carry hurt in us for them Holiday's very hard many never had blessing of complete family to come home to so many need our prayers just know are loved no one be push grow up do many are before their time.

I think this is the best Kelly Duke movie ever and she and the little boys both deserve awards for the acting in this movie…..Some of the very best on Patty’s part♥️❣️❣️ even though it was a heart wrenching movie, it was a great movie and I’m glad I got a chance to see it.
