Screwfix has them at the same price atm. i had a £10 off next purchase voucher so it was a no brainer. The top of a 4 or ideally a 6 pint milk container will give you a wide funnel.
Sprayers are a great bit of kit, but diluting is essential. They are also very heavy on paint compared to using a brush. When painting around concrete posts, I made up a "timber sleeve/cover" from scrap timber that slotted over the concrete posts, which worked surprisingly well and was easy to move onto the next post. I used a bit of cardboard that was cut to the width of the timber panels to mask the concrete kickboard. As for filling the reservoir from a big bucket, I transferred it to a smaller bucket, but it was still messy if you're not very careful. They are a pain to clean when you are done.
Thanks for your detailed comment. I found using wide masking tape for tge posts to be a quick solution. I just lift the panel up slightly and rest it on a few blocks of wood, and put an old dustsheet over the gravel board. As for cleaning, I found it surprisingly easy, and it only took about 5 minutes just using water, but I suppose it depends on the model of sprayer you use!
@@FixitwithFowler Never thought of lifting the panels. That's a great idea. I only have the cheap cordless Parkside one from Lidl, so it's not a high end sprayer by any means, but I have a few of the batteries and it was shocking cheap at the time and it does the job. It's fairly heavy on batteries but as I said I have a few of them so it wasn't an issue. The reason I said it was a pain to clean was because I was only able to get out to spray the fence for an hour or 2 tops at a time in the evenings and I had about 60 panels to paint in total and a third of those were front and back. So I ended up having to clean it after use many, many, many times...
@joeber3462 yeah that would be a pain if you have to keep cleaning it. I'm really pleased with this fence sprayer and it was on offer for £60 on amazon.
I brought one of these sprayers, I didn't water down the paint but I used almost 5 litres to do a 6 by 4 panel fence, I had everything turned down to slow the flow rate, is there any help as it will cost a fortune to finish my panels I may go back to the brush for the time being
I bought one of these last year and like others I diluted it with about 10% water. Soon got the knack and got the fence painted in a fraction of the time. New to your channel @FixitwithFowler and enjoying and learning from you, thank you.
Same here re: dilution...I know it's not really recommended but as most stains are water-based these days I didn't seem the harm of doing it this way. The sprayer leaves a great finish and a huge time-saving over brush/roller
I have this sprayer you need to dilute paint with 10 percent water you won't believe the difference.becuse the cuprinol is quite thick it needs thinning as its water based thin it with water and use a jug to transfer paint from can to container
Thanks for the tip, I did try using it again with diluted cuprinol ducksback, and it was loads better. I have ordered a wide mouth funnel for transferring the paint, so hopefully, that will help.
More paint will come out if you thin it a bit. Most guns don’t like ducksback neat and it’s delivery is slow like your spraying demonstrates. Not criticism- just a learning curve.
Firstly, thanks for the tip, I have since tried it with it watered down, and it was definitely better, but I have just got some sprayable ducksback, and it is amazing, so fast to use!
Don’t be daft, that set up does not represent panels in normal gardens covered in shrubs, concrete posts and concrete kickboards, such a lot of hours prep before even getting into painting……..
It's more a demonstration of the wagner fence sprayer and seeing if it speeds up me painting the fence. It states on the box you can paint a 6ft fence panel in 2 minutes but I couldn't manage that. Maybe next time I will be a bit quicker
It's definitely easier, but as for it being worked into the grain, who knows. If the wood is completely dry, then the paint will be absorbed into the wood better.
Hi love. I recently bought one of these paint sprayers. Great bit of kit. I do dilute the paint slightly and have bought a cheap plastic jam funnel for less messy filling. 👍
Yep, live and learn. I have since tried sprayable fence paint (quite runny), and it is so quick to spray. I have also invested in a wide neck funnel, so i don't spill it all when trying to fill it. Im just waiting for a dry spell to finish painting the new fence before winter!
‘Paint a fence panel in under 2 mins’ plastered on the video thumbnail, sounds like Wagner Advert to me and you still used that title along with ‘the BEST way to paint…’ when you admitted in the video it took way longer than 2 mins
So since filming, I have done some more panels, and I put some of the Cuprinol ducks back in a container, added a small amount of water, and mixed it. That definitely helped with the spraying and made it quicker. I used a jug to scoop the paint into the pot, but I have ordered a wide mouth funnel for next time!
I bought one of these after watching your video and having over 20 linear metres of fence to paint. Used Cuprinol Ducksback with 10% water added. Absolutely superb! Significantly quicker than a brush (though I did follow up with a brush for the occasional run) with better coverage. Really impressed!

As I shown this model is really good and considering it's my first attempt at using it I think the accuaracy of the Wagner fence sprayer is brilliant. However I would probably use some cardboard or something when painting near the top of the panels to prevent overspray.
Forgive me if I've missed any content that may answer this question but, can you use decking and fencing oils with this sprayer or does it have to be water based only products? Thanks in advance 😊
Is this a paid video sponsored by Wagner? I mean the only one thing you criticised was filling the container, if you use your loaf you’d use a cup and/or funnel to fill the container instead of pouring out of that giant tub of paint
No, it's not sponsored or paid for by Wagner. It was the first time I had used the fence sprayer, and I did think the filling of the container was going to end in disaster! I am genuinely really pleased with the fence sprayer and only post honest tool reviews.
Got the same one last year. It really struggled. Spurting out and then nothing. Ended up using the brush. Discovered later it's a good idea to use thinners. It'll spray a lot easier and the thinners will evaporate.
