    In this video, I show you all the basic steps you need to know as an off-roading beginner, specifically for the Lexus GX470 platform.
    But of a correction: Not all of the vehicle’s power will be sent to the wheel with the least traction when the CDL isn’t engaged. The GX has a Torsten center diff so some power will be distributed to the opposite axle. But, for all intents and purposes, the point holds: Lock your center differential when you’re off road so you’ll have the safety of 4WD.

    Loved your tips. I am experienced after owning a 2004 GX470 in So cal for 2 years but I had to learn it from trial and error. I WISH there was a video like this. Overall love these trucks. I got after market FnR bumpers and a winch and an old Man Emu lift and I feel like I can go almost anywhere with it now. LOVE these trucks. Get a replacement radiator cap. It's a weak point and I recently blew one off road and it caused me a lot of heartache. If yours is not in great shape go buy another one for $10 and leave it in your tool bag. Look for rusting on the inside and a breakdown of the rubber gasket.

    I learned about gearing down for steep hills very quickly after purchasing my GX as my front brakes nearly caught on fire coming down Bell Mountain here in GA. Excellent tip especially given how whimpy the 470 brakes are.

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  2 года назад +4

      Yes absolutely! Shifting to 4th to avoid overdrive is a great way to save brakes. Next step would probably be Hawk or EBC brake pads, but I think I might do the GX460 brake system upgrade. They’re a little more effective

    Just bought a GX470 myself and enjoy it and your video. I'll add somethings I learned playing around with it. Let me know if I'm wrong, but it worked for me. If going up a steep hill - go L gear 3, then get speed before hill, shift while climbing hill to L2, then L1 when it is really steep and slow all while driving up hill. It worked for me since just L1 doesnt really allow you to get much momentum/speed.
    Also I noticed that if you stop on the hill just let it kinda roll down the hill and don't put it in reverse, the vehicle (at least mine) can shut off and it gets sloppy handling going down hill (a bit dangerous). Make sure to remember to put in reverse if backing down a hill and not just let it roll back with gravity.
    Anther tip: Downhill assist craw (DAC) also works in reverse. Hope this was helpful to anyone.

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  2 года назад

      Thanks for your thoughts! Great stuff here
      I would say that, If you need some momentum, just throw it in drive and focus on your lines. Why not let the computer do the shifting for you? But I also understand if you prefer having that control of using L3 then shifting manually to L2 and L1.

    Great video. Suggestions for using these features on ice/snow are very much needed please.

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  2 года назад +4

      If you are going slow on an off road trail in the snow, I recommend using the center differential lock and all the same downhill assist features/airing down/ low range if needed as well. If you are on the road in the ice/snow, do not engage the differential lock as it disables the VSC (vehicle stability control) so you will be able to drift sideways if you lose grip.
      For instance, last year my rig did a fantastic job staying hooked up on a dirt trail covered in snow. As soon as I got back on the road, I disabled the off road features, (engaged high range and turned off CDL). As I was going around a turn in the winding road, the back end of the car started to step out and I would have ended up drifting off the road or getting spun 180-degrees, but the VSC saved me and pointed the vehicle straight again. If I had the CDL engaged, I wouldn’t have had that benefit.

    I read elsewhere it’s recommended to turn the vehicle off completely to switch gears with the transfer case. If not it is at least recommended to shift to neutral, and leave it there for a few seconds before switching gears in the transfer case

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  2 года назад

      Check out 3:27 in the video. It is totally unnecessary to shut the car off, all you need to do is shift to neutral. Once the transmission is disengaged, there’s no need to wait before shifting to Low range.

    This was good stuff. I have "regular" tires on my vehicle. I don't think that they are designed to air down. I could let out a little, like Mt. bike tires. But am I correct in thinking that you need special off road tires to air down like you did? Thanks, Scott

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  2 года назад +2

      Hi Scott, yeah I wouldn’t air down normal road tires too much. You risk de-beading the tire due to the soft sidewall. The sidewall on off-road oriented tires are much stiffer and can handle being aired down more without de-beading from the wheel. You can definitely let a few PSI out for better off road comfort though

  • @modernmontana4895
    @modernmontana4895 2 года назад

    Hey, great guide. But you didn't mention when/how to use trac off. I've heard that turning traction control off could help in deep snow to get you unstuck

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  2 года назад +1

      There is no way to disable traction control with a button or in the menu or anything. Hitting CDL will disable VSC and leave ATRAC on which makes the vehicle hugely capable. You should be able to throttle through it as ATRAC seems to stop working above 1.5-2k RPM. However, there are ways to disable traction Nannie’s completely. Here’s a video from Hawkeye Garage showing how that works: ruclips.net/video/dLw_PlEpi1A/видео.html
      Maybe I’ll do a video on this in the future. Except I may be able to hook it up to an in-cabin switch so you don’t have to get out of the car in the cold.

    Had a Xterra for 435000 miles, still ran great but donated it because it would not pass smog in CA. Got a 2005 GX470 with 55000 miles and am learning. Not so much about off-roading, did LOTS of that with the Xterra, learrning about the GX470! Turns out mine has the KDSS and I have lots of questions about suspension and lift kits. Want to install a Old Man Emu kit with about a 2 inch lift. What do I do about the KDSS? Are spacers needed for the sway bar mounts? I know nothing adding lift kits or how they work or don't work with KDSS. Kept my Xterra stock and it was a great vehicle.

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  2 года назад

      You know the Xterra was actually another vehicle on my list when I set out to look for an overlanding project. Great vehicles as well. As for GX lifts, I don’t think KDSS gives you problems below 3in but I could be wrong. Either way, just do a lift from a well known brand and aftermarket upper control arms to correct caster. 2in will technically be fine with the stock UCA but I’d just get them replaced so you have room for caster adjustment to fit tires. Sway bar spacers are a good idea just to maintain stock torsion and I know on non-KDSS models the sway bar can hit the springs with a lift when flexing if there’s no spacer. If you want an absolute treasure trove of information, visit the GXOR Facebook group and use the search function with some keywords like KDSS, lift kit, 2in, what tires can you fit, etc. facebook.com/groups/LexusGXOR/?ref=share

      Low range is for low speed crawling, Neutral disconnects all engine power from the drivetrain (for towing, mostly) and High is for normal driving.

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  Год назад +1

      Haha no not at all, everyone has different knowledge levels and I don’t consider asking questions dumb.
      H is for high range (good for on-road driving and even dirt roads, etc. you want to be in this position at all times unless you know what you’re doing and need the other ones for some reason)
      L is for low range. (Only use if you are off road and you want to basically downshift to make it up a steep hill. It’s like a multi speed bike where, if you down shift, your pedals move faster per rotation of the wheels, which increases your power and reduces stress on your legs. In the same way, when you shift to Low range, your engine spins faster per rotation of the wheels. This is fine up to about 30mph. If your speeds exceed that, back to H)
      N is neutral. (This is only to be used when you want to flat tow the vehicle, like you’re towing it on all 4 wheels behind a motor home, or if you need to move it without turning the vehicle on)

    When you are doing normal driving on a road or highway what should both knobs look like or where should they be? I put the normal transmission in D and the one on the right in N? Is this right or should it be in H?

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  8 месяцев назад

      The High/Low selector should be in H (high-range) for on-road driving. N is neutral and will disconnect all engine power from the drivetrain and you will not move.

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  Месяц назад

      If you have the A/C on, the engine seems to kinda overcompensate for the extra load of the A/C compressor and can give some extra torque. Just press the brake harder to stay still. This condition is heightened if you’re in low-range. Shorter gearing multiplies torque.

    Unfortunately my wife uses the Gx most of the time, and unknowingly She use the CDL on for more than a week on pavement, when I realized I deactivated it, it does not make any noise other than the steering rack, and everything seems normal, Do you think it could give me problems later?

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  2 года назад +1

      If the CDL engaged it could mean that the drivetrain was put under a lot of stress.
      Is it completely stock? It’s possible that the 29”tires would have just chirped across the pavement around turns and it would have dissipated that torsional load. But with bigger tires and a lift, that’s enough to easily snap an axle or a driveshaft (or worse, break diffs and transfer case gears)

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  2 года назад +1

      I’d keep an eye out for any noises for now. Might have gotten away with it if there’s nothing noticeable though. You could always drain and fill the T case and front/rear diffs to see if there is excess metal or anything in there.

  • @anirodriguez5386

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  2 года назад +1

      Ah man I’m sorry. Maybe look into replacing the actuator? I think it’s like $700 or something.
      It will limit you, but the center diff is not a completely open diff. It’s actually a Torsten limited slip, so some power transfer front-to-rear will occur still. just be careful not to get your wheel speed to high because when you lift a wheel in ruts or something and come down hard on the lifted wheel while it’s spinning fast, it could snap an axle since most of the engine torque goes the path of least resistance.

    • @anirodriguez5386
      @anirodriguez5386 2 года назад

      @@lexus_offroad_adventures I don’t think it’s the actuator as much as it might be the electrical box that controls the 4x4 components located under passenger compartment box. I accidentally might have burned that out.
      Good thing is I don’t wheel it hard, it’s mostly overloading fire trails. So far it’s held up. Thanks for the info! Good to know all this!

    Hello! i just went to test drive one today. loved it but i wish it had a dashboard light to say if i was in L/N/H 4x4.. i pushed it to far a few times and it made this really concerning grinding noise..is that the gears grinding? is there any issue going into L or H from park? did i just fuck up the dealers car by doing that lol? One other thing i was uncertain about was the sport and comfort mode.. there wasnt anything showing on the dash when i would turn the nob to comfort or sport and the car didnt go up or down at all.. is that a sign the air suspension is gone? does this ussualy show on the dash or do you typically feel the car lower or rise when you change adjust the nob between comfort/'sport? Thank you! Love the vids!

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  6 месяцев назад

      lol yea the transmission goes in Neutral when switching between H/N/L. There is no dash indicator because we get a physical knob in the GX, so it shouldn’t be necessary. There are no synchros in the transfer case selector system so a tiny bit of grinding is ok. you will probably get far less grinding in N
      Yeah this GX sounds like it’s performing perfectly. The sport comfort knob is only for damper (shock) stiffness, not for rear suspension height. The up/down arrow below that knob is the high/normal/low suspension height option.

This is the third GX470 i tested that did this so im convinced im doing something wrong.. Any advice or insight as to what is going on? I saw videos of this guy just pulling the shifter forward and back with all his strength and it didnt make any of those noises. it makes me feel like i have to be extremely sensitive and not overdue it but this just seems like either flawed engineering or im doing something wrong.. Since there is nothing on the dashboard i dont really know if im actually in N or 4h or 4L so i either pull it further or push it further depending on which one im trying to get into but without failure i get this very concerning grinding and vibration basically telling me to stop before i fuck something up.. idk it just doesnt seem right. @@pcargs360 You will know when you’re in low or high by how the GX drives when you put the transmission back in Drive. There is no need to push hard in either direction. I have never experienced this probably because I never felt the need to push beyond when I feel it go into the transfer gear (Lo/ Hi). If you saw someone in a video pushing it with all his strength, that’s user error or it looked like he was pushing harder than he actually was. It doesn’t / shouldn’t take much effort at all. Just put the trans in N, shift the transfer case lever from H to N, then from N to L, then put the trans back in D. You will know if it’s right by how it drives.

      Yeah for soft sand, low range with the center differential locked, or else you’ll start digging a one tire hole pretty fast.
