      To be honest: while it may be a classic it still is dogshit compared to anything that came afterwards in the series. I wish somebody would've had the courage to try PS V at the risk of tainting the legend that is PS IV. Also Wikipedia must be lying as there is no way that PS IV came out over 2 decades ago.

    • @MarcosCodas
      @MarcosCodas 6 лет назад +7

      Unfair standard to hold that game up to, if I may say. While I agree with you, it was pioneering a lot of stuff. The same can be said of Mega Man 1, but I'd still tell people to play it.

    Re: the Atari 1400XLD you're looking for -- there was actually no such thing. The two computers Atari had planned to introduce in 1983 were the 1400XL and 1450XLD. But then the video game crash happened, Atari went bankrupt, and was sold to Jack Tramiel, who had no interest in putting those models in production. So only prototypes exist, and by now probably all of the remaining ones are already in the hands of collectors.

    • @l3p3
      @l3p3 6 лет назад +1

      "Build"?! You mean: Stick together 5 off-the-shelf items and call it your build. This is so lame! Every ordinary pc can be a "Hackintosh" by installing (hacked) OSX on it. Those pc build videos make me pissed off. I did those kind of "builds" when I was 8 years old. It is just too simple.

    I swear David is trolling us now with these little itty bitty pieces of tape covering up addresses. I mean, the tape is so damned cheap, you would think to just slap a big ol' piece on. Instead, I picture David carefully and painstakingly using an exacto knife to cut all these fine pieces of tape. Again, I think we're being trolled now. There is absolutely no reason for this method. haha Oh well...I continue to love this channel!

      exactly what i thought when i saw it: "slap some compatible hardware in there and build the most stylish hackintosh ever" - and get replacement keycaps for the "win" keys.

    • @baaelectronics
      @baaelectronics 6 лет назад

      Windows keys could technically be Apple keys because Windows is mapped to Command keys and on old systems, Command and Apple were the same key!

    • @KenjiUmino
      @KenjiUmino 6 лет назад

      the thing is that it says "win" on the keys because this built in keyboard is just a standard mechanical PC keyboard. i think the order of the CRTL, ALT and CMD/WIN key needs to be changed for mac use as well.
      yes, it is purely cosmetical and does not change the useabillity but can be irritating if someone is picky about it - like, why do i have keys with a big old windows logo on my laptop keyboard when i am not even using windows on it ?

    I'm in the process of reading the book he got on retro game development, and if you're a C64 fan running Windows it's a great read! The author uses an IDE that's like Visual Studio for Commodore systems - it's a character designer, screen designer, and a bazillion other bells and whistles I haven't figured out yet. Sadly no Linux port (yet), but I don't mind booting into Windows for awhile to play with this thing. And the book walks you through a bunch of projects, with really detailed instructions. I definitely don't think David would need it, cuz obviously he created an awesome C64 game without it, but for C64 newbies like me it's a great starting point.

    Hi, you heard about the Intel CPU syscall privilege escalation issue? If you're running a modern Intel CPU, you might see performance in VMs and intensive tasks tank by 30% over the next 2 weeks. Think there might be something of relevance to retrocomputing because of validation:
    ie. the military uses hardened MIPS, 386, 486 CPUs and nothing newer because newer CPUs could have hardware bugs)
    'Old computers did it better!'

    Didn't you put that cassette in the wrong way round? It looks like the Casio KX-101 doesn't have auto-reverse and you put the tape in with the side at the end of the tape, not the start.

    Hey David, the keyboard in that Apple II chassis is called a Poker keyboard, it's an actual product that you can buy, and has just been mounted in there, which is why it feels like a finished product. I'm typing on one now, actually. ;)

I don't have any old computers to work on like you do... but I know someday I'll get a Tandy, Commodore, Sinclair, or an old Apple someday and I'll be able to know how to fix it because of you. Thanks

      Well, to be fair the Master System wasn't exactly popular in the US, and I think David is also more of a computer guy. That did surprise me a bit though.

    • @StormsparkPegasus
      @StormsparkPegasus 6 лет назад

      Exactly (I'm the one that donated that). Phantasy Star was not well known in the US until the Mega Drive/Genesis games. The Master System was almost completely unknown in the US, because Nintendo had something like 95% of the market in those days. It did much better in Europe, and in Brazil the situation was reversed (the Master System was the dominant system there until the mid 90's). The only way you would be familiar with Phantasy Star is if you were a big Sega fan. Not everyone was.

    OMG!!! *EVERYONE* had a copy of Hunchback II. At least on the C=, but it was cloned to many other machines too, so I even had it on my Sinclair. (it wasn't great, at least the Sinclair version - but came in many Greatest Hits packs, which Ocean did a lot of)
    Phantasy Star seemed to be on the shelves of everyone I knew with a console (they would always be Sega, I didn't know anyone with Atari or Nintendo) but I don't remember seeing it being played. I suspect it's another thing that came bundled either with the console here in the UK, or as part of a games pack, where there are enough "good" titles in there for it to be worth the price, and a bunch of throw away titles as a bonus.

    Have you considered asking Bil Herd, the chief designer of the Plus/4 series, if he's got one and if he might borrow it? He's still active in the tech/retro hobbyist scene and ex commodore engineers tend to have a lot of the more obscure machines. A number of the "lost" machines Commodore has made have after all been found with the engineers who made them.
