The fact that people gave their own stuff away to someone who will not only cherrish and preserve them, but also make great content about them, fills me with joy and gratitude. Thanks to everyone who had paid to send their old hardware so that we can all enjoy them and learn things about them. This channel has great supporters!
id104335409 I'd like to give my appreciation as well, especially because I would love to contribute, but I simply don't have anything that he would be interested in.
I sent the c64 floppy at the start, the woman i got it off was happy to see it go to someone who appreciated it, got it in a lot of c64 stuff to go with a c128 i bought off ebay, i mostly got the lot for a monitor off local craigslist. And i felt that sending it to David would be more meaningful than just letting it sit around in my stuff as a spare drive.
I'm from Brazil and I stopped buying things from USA because of the expensive shipping. I think about 5 years ago the shipping price in USA became insane. It's a pity, there are lots of things i'd love to buy and are cheap, but the shipping cost is a big nope
Chill af with the reactions "Ah, here's a package from rk..i dont know how to pronounce that, so, let's see..oh cool, a million dollars, i'll have to do a review on all this money, but thanks.."
I know! That was an impressive haul of pretty rare old tech. I do appreciate his cool demeanor in general though. So much of RUclips is overly loud and needlessly enthusiastic
I have the same disk drive as in the video and an Atari 800XL (both from my grandfather) and some of the old floppy disks with games on them seem to be corrupted because many games will consistently not load... And I agree, it is quite a noisy drive
As a synth player/enthusiast, I feel I should point out that the CZ-1000, HT-700, and the Poly-800 you showed here (as well as any other synth you have) are all synths (not just preset sound machines). The HT-700 is a hybrid, containing digital sound sources with 32 waves each, and analog filters; pretty cool compared to what you'd expect from its looks. I got one for my little sister, who's a really good piano player. The Poly-800 is a DCO analog synth; it has only one filter iirc, making it paraphonic, but it's still kinda cool. The CZ-1000 is completely digital, and maybe a little lacking, but it is a synth. Just wanted to mention that (if you see it), so they can be appreciated more. On the topic of this video, it's really nice that people send things in like that. It's generous (especially the ones from Europe!), and potentially contributes to future content we can all enjoy.
In 2014 the US Postal Service increase foreign postage costs 250-300% overnight... YES, they literally TRIPLED the rates in one day. That is why it was so expensive to mail something to Australia. For all foreign buyers who buy stuff from US sellers, they are not ripping you off on shipping, it now really costs that much. And the worst part? Chinese sellers get a sweetheart deal from the USPS, it is cheaper to mail a 16oz item from Beijing China to Portland Maine than it is to mail something from one town in the USA to another a few miles away. (Even the US post office is treasonous against its own citizens!)
If you download the video there should be some players that allow you to play it in ASCII art :) I did it with a software called "mplayer" on a Linux terminal a few years ago.
Also I DONT use Linux as I dont want to be only be able to play LinCity - NG all day since when I used Ubuntu all my steam games that were linux supported didnt work although there have since been lots of linux updates now
He made a video showcasing his thoughts on the future and risks of AI. I think it was brave and interesting to hear other people's thoughts and opinions, but he received so much backlash that he decided to take it down. I believe it's been archived somewhere, however, if you wish to look for it.
Alright everybody, listen up. This is what we're going to do. EVERYONE send him a box (or more than one) of band-aids this month. I want next months unboxing video to be him just opening hundreds of boxes of band-aids.
I really have no idea how I fell into the youtube retro tech community on RUclips, but I am glad that I can. I have spent hours watching 8-bit guy, Techmoan and Lazy Game Reviews.
That Game Gear is a rare version made by Majesco after Sega basically gave up on it and it was sold as a budget version later in life. The 3 ovals above the Game Gear logo on the left side of the screen are usually Red, Green and Blue but the all white logo on yours gives it away. They say the LCD screen quality is a little better on those. I've seen hundreds of Game Gears in my life but never seen one of those Majesco ones in person so it must be rare enough. You need to show that thing off!
It perplexes me how many people don't know how to pack things properly for shipping. Always assume the post offices and shipping companies of the world play football with your package.
I would start by searching Completed listings of the items on ebay around the time you receive the item. Then you can plus or minus a few dollars based on the condition of the item you receive compared to the one that was sold.
I don't really mind to be honest. If he cannot spare the money for a good camera then so be it. Someone could always donate something good for him to use
Because 1080p looks a lot better than 720p. 4k would be even better, but I can imagine withholding that for at least a while. I get that a lot of viewers of this type of channel will be like 'but old is better', but that's really not true in all cases. Higher resolution video is better, it provides more detail. And 'no point when a large portion of RUclips is still being viewed in 720p' what kind of argument is that? With that logic, no technological progress would ever be made.
720p looks like crap on my MacBook, and my 4K tv. Most other RUclipsrs I follow record in 4K, some in 8K and so they can crop it. 4K cameras are getting pretty cheap now, so there's basically zero reason not to offer 1080p at the bare minimum. It's 2017, not 2009.
When you review the gameboy camera see how it works while driving. I remember being a kid and taking a picture of the road lines as we drove (60mph) and them not appearing blurry.
Why are you so scared about pronouncing words? I mean, how difficult is it to work out how to say 'Boistolt'? Come on, man. These people are sending you stuff. At least make an effort.
To bad shipping a whole system from the Netherlands to the US is just to expensive. Would be nice to collaborate and hook you up with a nice system to use msdos and isa cards. So if someone knows how much shipping is for an AT minitower or could help out let me know.
Congratulations on getting everything you did. That Casio calculator looks awesome! I am especially looking forward to the episodes on the Gravis Ultrasound, Korg Poly-800, Mssiah cartridge, the Gameboy Camera, and the Penultimate Cartridge. LGR did two assembly videos of those Lego kits. Which channel will the GUS review be on? :)
Have fun playing with Gravis Ultrasound. It's an amazing beast that has its own sound, but can emulate SB, Adlib and MT-32 like nobody's business. I got the same model (rev 3.4) recently and it took me a few days to figure out configuration. It takes up many hardware addresses. This is no PnP SoundBlaster. Your model only appears to have 256kb soundfont RAM - 2 IC's on top left. The card is expandable to 1mb if you fill up all the sockets. Chips are much easier to find than the sound cards themselves, which often go for $500-$1000 on ebay.
Dear David, How do you decide what to keep and what to give away, sell, or throw out? Have you reached a point where you don't know where to place all things? Are you afraid that this moment will come? Best regards
I try to screen all of the income stuff to make sure it is something I can use and don't already have. But yes, storage has become a problem and I've run out of space.
Thanks for the answer, I appreciate it. As a collector (on a much smaller scale than you) I'm also questioning myself about this issue. No matter how many things we have, there will always be other interesting things we don't have, and our interests also shift. It seems like an idea for a philosophical section of your channel. Keep it up!
Regarding Package costs: Sometimes it's cheaper to remail stuff. But you need to know somebody in that country you can ship cheap to. Germany to Autralia rates are: 0-1kg = 7 EUR; 1-2 kg = 16 EUR; 2-5 kg = 47 EUR; 5-10 kg = 63 EUR.
Pro tip 9-bit guy. It's actually affordable for people from other countries to ship to the USA... it's the USA that has the outrageous oversea shipping costs. For example, I live in Japan and I can ship something to the USA for a fraction of what it what it would cost for someone from the USA to ship to me.
If you do manage to do an episode on the Gravis Ultrasound, I can lend you some GUS ephemera... I worked at eTek Labs back in the day, when we were working on the AMD Interwave audio DSP chip, which was their implementation of the Gravis GF-1, which we made when our company was called "Forte Technologies". (that's the quick version.) . Anyway, I have some GUS cards, GUS PNP (which has the Interwave chip), a non-populated card, etc. I can lend to you for your video if you'd like. :)
Question for anybody who can give me the answer. When Sega handheld originally came out did they offer a TV Tuner card, if so what were they called?? Even though the tuner isn't that practical anymore but I have 2 Sega handhelds and the TV tuner wouldn't be a bad option to complete my collection.
Punch cards represent 12 values, the 0-9 you can see, often encoded in EBCDIC for IBM. This picture on Wikipedia has the values typed along the top, so you can see what each punched value corresponds to: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Blue-punch-card-front-horiz.png Basically, 0-9 are numbers, but if you punch 1-9 AND 0, 11, or 12, they combine to make letters and symbols. It's also were we get 40 and 80 column from, since there are 40 and 80 column punch cards.
Thanks for the video, Dave! Hey, could you please do us a favor and not say "out of" when you really mean "FROM" or "in"? "Out of..." such-and-such a place means "NOT IN that place," or "in any place but..." that place.
4:15 I'd recognise that red anywhere, a GUS!!! To think I discarded my 1Mb card back around 2004-2005 whilst "cleaning up" angers me no end to this day! Gravis have the demoscene to thank for my purchase of that particular card.
Woah Poly 800! Enjoy sir! Been looking for one myself for ages :-) Cant wait to see your review/opinions. Also looking forward to the Messih review and C64 power stuff as Im beginning to get paranoid about my old PSUs - might be worth investing in that 3rd party solution!
The fact that people gave their own stuff away to someone who will not only cherrish and preserve them, but also make great content about them, fills me with joy and gratitude. Thanks to everyone who had paid to send their old hardware so that we can all enjoy them and learn things about them. This channel has great supporters!
Your compassion made me smile :)
id104335409 I'd like to give my appreciation as well, especially because I would love to contribute, but I simply don't have anything that he would be interested in.
Yeah, most other RUclipsrs probably chuck the crap they get into the trash.
I sent the c64 floppy at the start, the woman i got it off was happy to see it go to someone who appreciated it, got it in a lot of c64 stuff to go with a c128 i bought off ebay, i mostly got the lot for a monitor off local craigslist. well, now it has a 555 timer... where's Forrest M Mims III when you need him?
It's always Christmas at the 8-Bit Guy's house
Benjamin Brady *every month
Benjamin Brady Christmas or birthday? Maybe The 8-bit Guy lives on a planet, tha orbits the sun in a very fast time.
Not anymore because his storage is 100% full so he no longer dose unboxing video's.
Phew! I'm really glad my 50 pounds clown-car box arrived in good shape :) Took me hours to pack and wrap.
Well, everything survived except the little printer top plastic. But I can glue it back together.
We can rebuild it, we have the technology!
The 8-Bit Guy I have just came across a mac g3 beige all in one. Can you give me some info about it? I don't know a whole lot about this.
WOAH TECHNOLOGY!
closedonmonday6 is that the Molar Mac? the one that looks kind of like a tooth?
I'm a simple Norwegian. I see other Norwegians, I press like
Fy fan han får jo ting gratis som eg har lenge ønskt meg men ikkje har råd te.
Dislike
He's Norwegian? He's a very short viking
4:42
Video Stuff he's not Norwegian, it's just the donations was from Norway.
Derr Rtee I think that's what he meant.
I very much enjoy your new specific Intro for unboxing!
SansEatsNachos gotta agree, ascii art is so cool!
You maybe should do a video building that Lego Atari 2600, just like LGR did on his Lego computers!
Magestig that would be rad
And Also Retro Recipes' Lego C64
I'm from Brazil and I stopped buying things from USA because of the expensive shipping. I think about 5 years ago the shipping price in USA became insane. It's a pity, there are lots of things i'd love to buy and are cheap, but the shipping cost is a big nope
raphaelbianchi - what stuff are you wanting to buy?
roxcyn memes
roxcyn All kind of things. Books, cds, vinyl, guitar parts, games, tools etc.
Isso sem falar nos impostos que nosso lindo governo cobra.
raphaelbianchi - have you ever considering trades? Also, why did you edit your comment to Swedish?
Chill af with the reactions
"Ah, here's a package from rk..i dont know how to pronounce that, so, let's see..oh cool,
a million dollars, i'll have to do a review on all this money, but thanks.."
I know! That was an impressive haul of pretty rare old tech.
I do appreciate his cool demeanor in general though. So much of RUclips is overly loud and needlessly enthusiastic
He’s narrating over footage he’d recorded earlier so it’s not actually his original reaction
19$ just for Postage ? omfg thats expensive over there in the US ....
WOWt DEARS I couldn't believe it when it was almost $100 to ship a package to Australia
Yea, usually it's the other way around when we try to send stuff to the US.
Because the United States is deliberately suppressing small business international sales.
Priority mail flat rate boxes are actually a very good deal considering what you get...
America is big!
the 8-bit guy, LGR and techmoan are the best 3 channels on YT.
techmoan makes interesting items sound incredibly dull!
TheWeepingCorpse eh... i'd take nostalgia nerd over techmoan any day. nostalgia nerd's waay better.
Don't forget The Gaming Historian!
That poly 800 is a gem of an analog synth.. real pro stuff in a home keyboard body.. the chord function gives heavenly house chords and stabs
Oh cool “worms “ lol 😂 2:52
I had that Atarti floppy drive. It was a POS and would often misread disks. As a bonus it makes a loud irritating angry noise when it does.
I have the same disk drive as in the video and an Atari 800XL (both from my grandfather) and some of the old floppy disks with games on them seem to be corrupted because many games will consistently not load... And I agree, it is quite a noisy drive

Just a cool notice for an eventual review: the Poly 800 existed also with inverted black and white keys!
Dave Dirckx Indeed it did! Looks pretty cool
Excellent - Hans does excellent C64 power savers! Be sure to use it on your C64/VIC20 with compatible power supplies.
lactobacillusprime Couldn't agree more! I literally just posted a very similar comment. :)
Thanks guys :) Glad you enjoy using them.
It's so cool that people contribute to some sort of visual museum that most of us wouldn't be able to appreciate otherwise.
That Tandy coco2 I would really love to have as my first retro computer for my console collection.
i swear the only time he sounds like hes from texas is when he says power supply
I think LGR is watching this wishing he had a Gravis Ultrasound.
Didn't someone donate one to him on his last unboxing video?
I'm not sure. I just knew he mentioned wanting to have one in his 486 DOS PC build.
Hang on let me go re watch it.
Yeah ok, in his last unboxing he was given a Gravis Ultrasound MAX.
Rodville yeah I just saw it as well and I do agree
It brings a tear to my eye, every time I see something that I once owned, but no longer own now...
4:42 A tip for pronouncing foreign names; you could type it in Google Translate, set the language and then press the "Listen" icon.
In 2014 the US Postal Service increase foreign postage costs 250-300% overnight... YES, they literally TRIPLED the rates in one day. That is why it was so expensive to mail something to Australia. why cant I watch this in 8-bit or ASCII-ART??????????
If you download the video there should be some players that allow you to play it in ASCII art :) I did it with a software called "mplayer" on a Linux terminal a few years ago.
OK
Also I DONT use Linux as I dont want to be only be able to play LinCity - NG all day since when I used Ubuntu all my steam games that were linux supported didnt work although there have since been lots of linux updates now
wclifton968 maybe you can go dual boot or even use another drive for linux if you're interested.
wclifton968 you can... a free ASCII-ART display driver has been around for ages.
2:50 Could you scan that Worms for C64 cover? It's listed on MobyGames but with a missing cover.
So this is what happens when Santa is 30 freakin years late.
Damn, you survived the onslaught of hate from the cartridge restoration videos lol.
Jesse Crandle they might have been numerous, but it was way less controversial than his removed AI video
I'm intrigued, when was this? I believe I've been subbed for a year or so and watched videos casually before then, I don't recall an AI video.
ProfesyonelCaylak wow, i didn't notice he removed that. what a bummer. i liked that video.
He made a video showcasing his thoughts on the future and risks of AI. I think it was brave and interesting to hear other people's thoughts and opinions, but he received so much backlash that he decided to take it down. I believe it's been archived somewhere, however, if you wish to look for it.
I can't wait to hear you do a video about the Korg Poly 800! Keep up the fine work!!
Alright everybody, listen up. This is what we're going to do. EVERYONE send him a box (or more than one) of band-aids this month. I want next months unboxing video to be him just opening hundreds of boxes of band-aids.
I think that gridcase laptop you got is the same type that they used in the Aliens movie to control the sentry guns.
I really have no idea how I fell into the youtube retro tech community on RUclips, but I am glad that I can. I have spent hours watching 8-bit guy, Techmoan and Lazy Game Reviews.
those trs80 color computer printers are sooo neat they use little ink pens
The 2nd one uses color pens. The first one uses thermal paper :)
That Game Gear is a rare version made by Majesco after Sega basically gave up on it and it was sold as a budget version later in life. They say the LCD screen quality is a little better on those. I've seen hundreds of Game Gears in my life but never seen one of those Majesco ones in person so it must be rare enough. You need to show that thing off!
Thats pretty interesting. I have an all blue game gear laying around somewhere in my house, was that rare?
Rare but not an authentic Game Gear since it wasn't released by Sega
Fragile, must be italian....
Fra-gee-lay.
TR47 would you look at that!
It's a major award.
It perplexes me how many people don't know how to pack things properly for shipping. Always assume the post offices and shipping companies of the world play football with your package.
8:41 Don't mix batteries!
batteries dont explode when you mix them and use them for 5 minutes and then take them out
That is a Majesco Game Gear. They are newer, better quality capacitors and lcd. ALso the TV tuner does not work on this model. They are quite rare.
How do we send stuff to you?
Rookii go to his website in the description
Happy 500000 subcribers!!!!
How do you appraise these donations when doing your taxes?
Beats me... At this point I haven't been. But I'm trying to find a CPA to start helping me with this stuff, so I'll probably find out how.
The 8-Bit Guy hi
The 8-Bit Guy love your Channel
tohopes lol I just wouldn't.
I would start by searching Completed listings of the items on ebay around the time you receive the item. Then you can plus or minus a few dollars based on the condition of the item you receive compared to the one that was sold.
pleaaase, let the next video be about polishing the sega gamegear screen, My PSP is scratched beyond belief and I can't change the case
I'm just curious - what camera do you record on?
The Melon Addict I guess so, judging from the video quality
No, he uses the samsung galaxy camera 1 it is a few years old
that, or he's using a potato.
I don't really mind to be honest. If he cannot spare the money for a good camera then so be it. Someone could always donate something good for him to use
Samsung NX-2000 and a Samsung Galaxy Camera, depending on the shot.
Thats awesome Hans sent you some C64 savers. I use them myself on my C64 gear and love them.
8 Bit Guy maybe start uploading videos in 1080p please? It would be greatly appreciated!
Why 1080p? I think 720p is fine but I was just wondering....
Well, while 720p is nice and all, I view my screen from about a foot away from me and it's 13 inches. I can easily make out the pixels.
Because 1080p looks a lot better than 720p. 4k would be even better, but I can imagine withholding that for at least a while.
I get that a lot of viewers of this type of channel will be like 'but old is better', but that's really not true in all cases. Higher resolution video is better, it provides more detail.
And 'no point when a large portion of RUclips is still being viewed in 720p'
what kind of argument is that?
With that logic, no technological progress would ever be made.
also uploading stuff in higher definition forces youtube to give more bandwidth to it so it looks better at lower resolutions as well.
I don't know If this has been asked before, but do you have any Sinclair computers?
Wow, a Poly 800?! That's not just a keyboard, that's a nice synth. Have fun with it =)
If all else fails retro brite everything. And shotgun all capacitors
>channel reviews toy keyboards
>someone sends a pro synth
lol
When you review the gameboy camera see how it works while driving.
I remember being a kid and taking a picture of the road lines as we drove (60mph) and them not appearing blurry.
500 000 subs btw!

Woah, a Gravis Ultrasound and a GRiD laptop! Pretty sweet
Why are you so scared about pronouncing words? I mean, how difficult is it to work out how to say 'Boistolt'? Come on, man. These people are sending you stuff. At least make an effort.
He wanted to pronounce it exactly correctly.
Looking forward for that Korg review on the 8bit keys channel.
did they ever make an ultimate cartridge, I don't know if I coudl be happy with the penultimate one
Congratulations on 500K Subscribers!
10:39 Needs a little retrobright on the *keys* but otherwise looks in great shape. Nice falsetto there ;-)
David you are incredible and you helped me so much Thanks!
Would you consider doing any video game reviews like Worms?
Thanks for the video dude ! I know it took some effort to make! Cheers from Argentina !
Where do you store all this stuff? I don't think my wife would let me keep all these old systems around the house!
Hi, I recently came into an old Sony Vaio F801A running ME. Would you be interested in something like that?
To bad shipping a whole system from the Netherlands to the US is just to expensive. Would be nice to collaborate and hook you up with a nice system to use msdos and isa cards. So if someone knows how much shipping is for an AT minitower or could help out let me know.
It's ridiculous when you try to buy something for like 10$, but the shipping is like a 100$.
Fantastic donations and what an awesome viewership you have. I look forward to your upcoming videos. You are awesome, David.
Woaw, I'm so jealous of that TRS-80 Model 100! =O Would like so much to have one and just brings it in class to take notes!
I busted out LAUGHING when you said "Worms!" that way at 2:50! 🤣
Fascinating!
As a long time viewer( since 2013 ) your content is better than it ever was! Keep up the good work!
The 386 laptop was a military equipment, that's why you never saw it.
I think the GUS will be on this channel since it was more or less just a computer product.
Ok, thank you. There are some uses for it in music , but I would agree with you that it is primarily a computer accessory. :)
I found my peace in this channel
Wait for the AI video!
The Korg Poly 800 is NOT a keyboard..it's a SYNTHERSIZER...a REAL synthersizer..not a crappy keyboard..show some respect hahahaha
Nice jobs,thanks share
Congratulations on 500k!
You know what I hate about these videos...
The moment they end...
I would say, the sponge necessary to absorb the drool. :-D

Time for a 500k sub humble brag
Worms! Is one of my favorite C64 games, truly underrated game.
386 was a big deal when the GRIDcase 1530 came out. It was the world's first production 386 laptop.
wow 500k subscriber's
Dear David, How do you decide what to keep and what to give away, sell, or throw out? Have you reached a point where you don't know where to place all things? Are you afraid that this moment will come? Best regards

pentagroat is an option when buying the pendultimate cart
damn, i'd love to have random people sending me (old) consoles and games :o *envy*
+RadimentriX heh, exactly what I thought

This picture on Wikipedia has the values typed along the top, so you can see what each punched value corresponds to: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Blue-punch-card-front-horiz.png Basically, 0-9 are numbers, but if you punch 1-9 AND 0, 11, or 12, they combine to make letters and symbols. It's also were we get 40 and 80 column from, since there are 40 and 80 column punch cards.
Cool things you Got :)
Thanks for the video, Dave!
Hey, could you please do us a favor and not say "out of" when you really mean "FROM" or "in"? "Out of..." such-and-such a place means "NOT IN that place," or "in any place but..." that place.
10:11 wtf is that sound
Wow, poly800! The russian band ''Кобальт Синий'' plays on that thing!
4:15 I'd recognise that red anywhere, a GUS!!! To think I discarded my 1Mb card back around 2004-2005 whilst "cleaning up" angers me no end to this day! Gravis have the demoscene to thank for my purchase of that particular card.
great videos man
Woah Poly 800! Enjoy sir! Been looking for one myself for ages :-) Cant wait to see your review/opinions. Also looking forward to the Messih review and C64 power stuff as Im beginning to get paranoid about my old PSUs - might be worth investing in that 3rd party solution!
I recently sent a Gravis Ultrasound Max to LGR (featured in his last unboxing video), so maybe you can do a video on the GUS together? :P
Dear 8_bit guy,I will send a 2005 apple key board and mouse.From,Seattle
