I have a 5 min solution, stick the alan wrench through the spring as they show above, then simple rotate the spring and you will see the spring compress. After 15 or so turns the end you will replace with the kel-tec provided pin will loosen. Simple take the old one off and install the new one. Then rotate the spring the other way and the tension will be evened out the pull the alan wrench out and your done. Once it came to me, i was done in 5 min!

Helpful hint if you can't compress the spring enough: insert the allen key as directed. Rotate the allen key along the spring coil- like a screw to compress one end of the spring. Both extended ends of the allen key will be like the handles on a t handle wrench.

Thanks for the tip. Also it will turn easier if you help the end cap you are compressing along a bit. It sticks otherwise.
I didn't make the tool to hold it. I used the butt stock hole but it doesn't let you get much force on the spring since the whole is so deep. If I did it again, I'd spend 15sec to drill out a 2x4. As he says in the video, if you have too much remaining tension on the top, it makes the job way harder than it has to be.

Much harder than the video would indicate. I am a strong guy, and pretty handy. I think the key is compressing the spring as far as you possibly can. There are some good tips in the comment section. After I got the spring compressed, the pin still did not want to go on. I got one end inserted in the pin, but could not rotate as the video showed. I recommend a tool with a long comfortable handle. Took me about an hour.

Turn the spring upside down so it falls. Then attach a very small zip tie to one leg of the rod to hold it to the spring about an inch from the end. You can then turn the spring upright without the rod falling back down. That is what I did when it happened to me.

When you order the new charging handle, regardless of which one. MCARBO should include a new spring with the new little insert already installed. Would save a lot of people a lot of agony. You loose the tension, and it's impossible to fish the wires up to install the insert. Complicated I know. Happened to me.

Compressing the spring and pinning it was one of the hardest things that I have done. Once you compress it, then the spring is compressed where you are trying to put an allen wrench in. I finally got it but then the issue became the top "U" link started sliding down on me, so I had to work it back up to the right position and then I stuck a small screw driver under the top link to stop it from sliding down again. Finally I had to get my wife's help to put the cap on while I pressed down.

First gun ever (haven't even shot it yet) and first upgrade. Had I known how difficult this was going to be, I would reconsider this upgrade. Installation took over an hour and a half with multiple issues; trying to compress the spring enough while attempting to set the Allen key, black cap came off and I removed the Allen key for more tension and wasted about 30min trying to re-compress both clamping mechanisms within the spring, clamping around the new locking pin. Really just a PITA. One tip I would like to provide is that you can use your butt stock pin holes to position the spring vertically, similar to how the spring was set upright in the video in drilled wood. That did help to give me some leverage. Anyways, it's over now, but really a lot of frustrating work and wish I'd had a better first experience. Did the recoil buffer and bolt tube cover at the same time easily. Now, onto the feed ramp...

My go to method is to use 2 Allen keys ,a pair of side cutters and a short pc of 2x4 with the proper hole drilled in it to hold the spring assembly.. along with an extra person.. Maybe the wife..lol...I compressed as shown in the M Carbo video, had the wife push in the 1st Allen key... Then I used the side cutters to capture the coils of the spring about 3/4 in above the 1st allen and compress again , then had the wife push through the 2nd Allen.. Repeating this until I achieved the proper compression . It definitely makes it easier with 2 people . Not enough hands when 1 person tries this.

WHAT A PITA!!!! I didn't have any method to securely clamp the spring. What finally worked for me was inserting an hex wrench into middle of spring with equal parts sticking out of either side of spring. Then, I placed the end of spring opposite the locking pin into palm of my left hand. Next, I squeezed the hex wrench with index and ring fingers (one on each side of spring) toward palm to compress spring. Finally, I slipped another hex wrench into spring with right hand to capture it while compressed. This was enough to be able to easily compress the other end to install the Locking Pin. I don't have extreme hand strength so others might find this works even better for them. Good luck.

I tried this method for 30 minutes then decided there must be a way to get control of this procedure and not put up with the wobbly spring/pins fingertip method. All you need are two 3/16" thin pieces of plywood, about 3" square with a hole the diameter of the spring drilled in each, another tiny allen wrench, and a bench vise.
Hard to describe, but follow step 1 in the video. Then put another allen wrench 5 coils down in the uncompressed side, inbetween the internal pins. Put each end of the spring through the plywood squares.
The layering is front to back : plywood/allen wrench/uncompressed spring/allen wrench/ plywood. The compressed long end of of the spring is out the hole on the back of the plywood. A very short endcap-spring section is out the front piece of plywood.
I was looking down at the top of the vise, the "back" toward me, the "front" under the worklight.
Compress the plywood/allen wrench / spring hodgepodge in the vise slowly - it will be off center - and wants to wiggle.
Slowly the end of the spring, the front area you need to work with the end cap will emerge. And you are relaxed and can easily take care of the rest per the video. You don't need the screwdriver. I used needle nose pliers to gently and easily twist the ends of the pins.
I realize this is hard to follow but I wasn't about to repeat it and shoot a video. Hope it helps.

What a pain but I got it done! I didn't do the twisty thing with the legs to get the pin in. If you compress the spring enough you can easily swap the end pin. But damn the trick is compressing the spring, had to use 3 clamps!!!

I thought I'd add my misfortunes, errors, and recovery for the benefit of others. I tried your method and was unsuccessful. Age, decreased grip strength and wobble while trying to compress the springs while NOT compressing the interior wire guides and then inserting the allen wrench (thanks for that by the way!) didn't work for me. So I tried alternate ways and then ended up making it worse by losing the retainer on one end WITHOUT getting the Integrated tool-less locking pin installed. So I was left to find an alternate method that involved a couple more tools. I won't detailed the failed attempts in the middle.
My problem was, I needed to compress the springs and get the guide protruding from the end. I used my vise and AK47/74 cleaning kit tube. I put the spring in my vise mostly vertical with just the open end of the spring at the bottom. Just enough pressure with the vice to hold the spring. The AK47/74 cleaning kit tube was almost perfect for compressing the spring and extending the guide out the bottom. The tube was comfortable to hold and it was long enough that it eliminated almost all of the spring's tendency bend back and forth. I was able to get the guide extended out the bottom. I used something similar to your screwdriver with a handle to twist the guide to open up the ends. So one hand compressing the spring w/AK tube, my face to hold the screwdriver (a pick in my case) and apply the twist, my other hand to install the Locking Pin to the spring guide. After figuring this out, it worked pretty quickly. It would have been even easier with another person. My method would have worked even if I hadn't removed/lost the retainer button, but it required two things that not everyone has. I hope this will help someone else.

*didn’t read all the other comments* use cable ties(zip ties to keep the spring compressed and gunner set gerber(needle nose) makes the whole process easier. With exception of constantly dropping small pieces.

I have done something similar with extra power ak47 recoil spring replacements. When I order this I will wash/degrease the spring assembly and dry with a hair dryer. Next wrap the spring with either duct tape or skateboard grip tape. It makes it bigger and easier to handle whdn you get a good grip . I prefer duct tape on spring then skateboard tape on the duck tape. Much easier ro compress once it's 3 times bigger around and a good grip. Remove tape after assembly and oil spring.

Well, i got the spring compressed and captured, but the metal end popped off and flew across my garage, LOL. I found it on the floor, not that I need the old one. Yes, I was wearing safety glasses. I’m not very handy. Hands have been giving me trouble lately so it might be that isn’t helping. Now that the end popped off, the top metal loop piece inside the spring slipped down so I’ll figure something out tomorrow (maybe a wire tie?) to try to keep it from slipping down alongside the other. Any advice would be welcome. I’m not giving up!

I have literally everything you make for the SUB2K. That said, and I'm trying to not sound like a duck, but who is having problems putting the other one in? I've done it several times and I do exactly what Chris does in the install video. I use that lube and it's so easy. That said, depending on how this install looks, I still might get this. But seriously, it's not that difficult! Anyway, love the innovations!
