    Just realizing I completely misspoke at 4:02 about my Jag-Stang’s neck pickup 🙃 it’s a Fender Texas Special bridge pickup just like Kurt’s, not Seymour Duncan!

    That "wrong" note that's played toward the end of the solo of Teen Spirit fucks hard. I assume that's something Cobain chose to do live because it seems like something he'd do, but if not - excellent choice! It tickles my brain in the correct way.

    • @Iloveeatingpasta11
      @Iloveeatingpasta11 Месяц назад

      Ikr! I think it was purposeful because you can hear him doing it as early as summer 1991. It definitely works for that part of the solo, gives it kind of a spooky vibe.

  • @fuzzydunlop7928
    @fuzzydunlop7928 Месяц назад +15

    Also - Fun Fact: In addition to Kurt, the Jag-Stang also features in the story of another guitar legend - Issac Brock of Modest Mouse, in the wee years of MM, Brock got his hands on a Jag-Stang with a trem system. It's with that guitar that he started using the space behind the bridge as a lever (instead of the whammy bar) to make dramatic pitch-bending noises which, coupled with open harmonics, have been a prominent feature of Brock's guitar playing to the present day.
    Looking at the Jag-Stang bridge, you can see he'd have just enough space to really crack on that sucker back and forth and make the "wee-woo" noises.

    I think that I had once read (no sources) Kurt mentioning he didn’t like how the prototype played or had some complaints and said he wanted them to redo it. But maybe the issues were addressed by his tech and he started to really enjoy it in the line up. If Kurt didn’t like it, I highly doubt he would have played it as much as he was.

    • @justinlareau2227
      @justinlareau2227 Месяц назад

      I read some where he wanted relief cuts like a strat added for your playing arm and to make it more comfortable against your body. To my knowledge those were the changes he wanted but passed away before he could have fender add them. Before the proto he had he sent others back a couple times with notes on them to get the shape better.

It has a few small dings and scratches and the white plastic is discolored but I think it just adds to the guitars personality. The tone I love. I have thought about doing kurts Bridge mod as well as put in the same pick ups kurt used in his. I likely will someday. As a kid I wanted one of these but was worried it would sound too thin like my strat until I played one and heard how much it rocked.

    I see the reason for this attitude towards Jag stang is that the potential of this guitar was simply not revealed, judge for yourself: usually if a musician gets his signature instrument, he uses it wherever he can, Kurt puts it on the back burner, preferring his mustang, it was not used so often at concerts, even on Kurt does not part with his mustang at the last concert of the band, there are no studio recordings with him, and too little time has passed because of all the events we know. As a result, Jag Stang remained something strange and misunderstood

    I had an original blue 95 jag stang . I played the thing to death. I owned it for 22 years. The tuners were shot. The low e string saddle was totally worn out . The string wouldn’t stay in the saddle anymore. It had patina around the edges. Small dents and dings. I found the guitar to be very quirky. It was my first real guitar that I bought with my money from being a pizza delivery driver. As I got older my hands still grew and it was harder to play on other than just chords. I think the thing the frustrated me the most was that crap ass mustang bridge. I put a Duncan jb in the bridge. The pick up was black. Other than that it was totally stock. With that money that I sold it with I ended up getting the jaguar. Much easier to play my hands weren’t cramped anymore. And no more horrible bridge. But I definitely didn’t hate it. I wrote a lot of songs on jag stang . Like I said I played that thing hard and full throttle all the time. It took over 20 years to wear it out so that’s saying something. I think I bought it with the case for like 700 bucks. I could be wrong that was back in 96. Anyway cool video on this guitar 🎸.

    I remember saving for AGES to buy a Jag-Stang I saw in my local guitar shop. I finally had enough, bought it, took it home and HATED how it played 😅 I sold it barely a few months later. I regret it A LOT now and wish I had been more patient with it.

    Will you make a guitar history video on the reading 92 sunburst strat? This is one of my favourite strats and wonder about the specs on it 😊

    I love your covers, they are very cool and in the right tone.
    But one question, why do you use the ''Pollychorus'' and the ''Eco Flanger'' as different pedals? I heard that the 70's edition has absolutely the same circuit (and gives the same sound), or do you just use them like this to make it sound more similar to the original due to the pedal configurations?

    Eric, ive meen meaning to ask what set of strings do you use? And do you vary string thickness and such between guitars?

      For my Nirvana guitars I try to stick to era accurate strings! Nevermind era and prior have Dean Markley, In Utero era have GHS Boomers. Offsets have 10-52, everything else has 10-46

    Didn't you initially installed a Fender texas special bridge pickup? Or did you recently changed it for an SD texas special?

    I owned an early 1995 Feista Red Jagstang and I was went to get its pickups upgraded.
    And I though these original pickups are weak it needs high output.
    I ended up going with a dimarzio x2n in the briege and a Jb junior because I thought they'd be crazy and maybe something Kurt would have done....
    This was before Kurt's guitar gear was listed online.
    Apparently his stage jagstang had the same pickups in it.
    I chose mine only think what would Kurt do? Never knew I'd match them completely.
    And yeah it sounded tight and proper.

      As far as I know, Kurt has never used an X2N in any of his guitars

    Count me as the first person to think that the Jag-Stang is kinda meh. I don't think they quite recreated Kurt's photo collage perfectly, which looks slightly better than the real thing imo.

    Eric do you have any insight about the radius mismatch between the TOM bridge and the 7.25 radius of the Jagstang (and also his mustangs?). I had heard that there is a mismatch unless the saddles of the TOM are modified to match the 7.25 radius of the fretboard. Or do you just forgive the mismatch because it’s not a noticeable in reality? Would really appreciate your help with this, cuz I’m wondering if I should just keep the stock Jagstang bridge, which obviously is not the TOM!

    Would a JB jr or a Hot Rails work in the neck instead of the Texas Special? I understand they have different characteristics, but I'm just curious.
