Since uploading this video, it's been brought to my attention that in a Feb 1990 interview Krist confirmed that Kurt's "Greco" Mustang from the Bleach era was actually a Fender Mustang. Therefore making that K Strat Kurt's SECOND Fender guitar, not the FIRST as I presented in this video. I apologize for missing this interview in my research, I had found 4 or 5 different sources that said The K Strat was his first Fender and I always believed the Greco was a parts-guitar, not an actual Fender. I strive to only present accurate info and to make it very clear when I am presenting speculation or a guess, I don't want to put misinformation out there. The K Strat was Kurt's SECOND Fender guitar. Source about his first Fender Mustang: www.livenirvana.com/interviews/9002ga/index.php
Mistakes happen man! Don't burn yourself Edit: also, I highly recommend some Squier Classic Vibe strat pickups or some strat pickups from PlanetTone (I promise I'm not sponsored by them, I just like their stuff a lot), it's only about 40 bucks for a set of three strat pups
There's finally confirmation? I mean I always figured it was, just modded with spare parts from his shattered Hi Flier. Thanks for the info, keep it up!
I have a theory for the humbuckee used. Kurts aria pro also had a black humbucker in the bridge that was used instead of the original aria zebra pickup. After kurt smashed the aria at the motorsports garage with Dan Peters, a fan had picked up the body with the pickups still in it. I forget the exact words Kurt said but it was something like, "hey man you don't mind me taking those pickups back" from photos of kurt using the aria the bridge humbucker didnt have a visible logo, so its possible that kurt reused the humbucker in the K strat.
Going with this line of thinking and traceability, could that pickup be from the Washburn force that was smashed at lamefest? Not too far of a stretch to think that Kurt might have brought back the humbucker with him. The next guitar we see is the blue gibson sg with an unbranded humbucker. There is pics of Kurt playing the aria post pickup swap
I can see that. It's not like they had a bunch of money to go out and buy pickups all the time, so it makes sense Kurt would want to salvage every piece of gear he could
Dave played a huge role in nrivanas success. I honeslty dont think that SLTS would have been anywhere near as big as it was without Daves drumming. He took Kurts songs to the next level.
I have been a Nirvana fan for over 13 years at this point and I still love learning and listening Nirvana story, amazing Another not too well known guitar (but very unusual for Kurt for sure) is the Telecaster that Courtney gave to him in 91-92 that used in a couple of shows like Vienna 91 (light blue, painted and with a heart that says Courtney), and aparently a custom Telecaster was also one of the lasts guitars that Kurt ever played (a custom shop one)
Honestly finding out how much Kurt liked the guitar when getting his first Fender guitar is so satisfying as during the Bleach Era of Nirvana, Kurt disliked using clones or knockoff guitars as they would struggle to stay in tune during performances hence why he would smash them at the end of the shows. However when he got his first real Univox High Flyer that didn't have any problems that he would face he would keep them. More info on Story of Kurt Cobain's "Bleach" Era Guitars video by GroundGuitar Also some things that you'll notice when watching again: 0:47 - A pinched twisted cable 2:48 - Guy in the background of the photo 🤘 17:27 - Thank you for the build part of the video as this really shows that you shouldn't feel bad about buying a Squire guitar as you can always change the hardware of the guitar to your liking and honestly it then become a fun project to work on and you will also learn new things like how the guitar is build and the electronics all put together. 🎸 But dude honestly a great guitar for your collection will not only be the "Secret Kurt Strat" that you teased but also Kurt's Ferrington Mustang! 🤯 Can't wait for a video of that guitar! Keep rocking Eric! Your amazing in your videos! 👍
Hello Mr Sir of Nirvana Guitars. You are one of the few channels that make me full on excited when a new video is uploaded. These videos are so well put together and you deserve millions of subs my guy. Don't stop Nirvanering! Also im not a bot lol, this is what i thunk.
Very interesting as always. You haven't made an uninteresting video yet imo Thanks for your attention to the details and letting us in on how you reason out your decisions when specific parts are not known or widely agreed upon. Kurt was and remains such a complex talented and fancinating human being and its just amazing how many people are still drawn to his story, his music, his legacy and the uniquely magical talent that was Kurdt Cobain.
The live tonight sold out clip in Krist’s apartment always sounded like it had a flanger on to me or something, it could have been the microphone on the vhs camcorder at the time Love the K strat, one of my fav Kurt strats. Awesome video my friend
Now that Kurt’s autopsy (unconfirmed but seems real) has been made public/leaked it’s interesting that it says he had another tattoo of a question mark. In the picture at 5:54 you can see it closer to his elbow!
Good video, it is always interesting to know the history of some of the guitars that Kurt used, I hope that in the future you consider making more videos like this with other guitars such as the Fender Competition Mustang or the Vandalism Stratocaster
I also love white guitars and recently got an MIJ Traditional 60s Stratocaster in Olympic White and was a bit worried it'd be more of an off-white due to how inconsistent Fender has been with Olympic White, but it was a nice, pure, non-creamy white for anybody looking for that. Really nice neck, too.
So glad you are doing this! Wish I had your channel back in the late 90s when it was all about Kurt’s guitars for me and could barely find enough (reliable) info, let alone pictures or good quality recordings on the Internet. I am really glad to see you have done your homework very well and put it all together like this. Even after 25 years, it is still priceless for me. Thank you for doing this, keep it up and keep them coming!
I really enjoy watching your videos on Kurt's guitars. I never knew that the K Strat had most likely been stolen. It will be interesting to see if it ever turns up again. A beautiful guitar.
Perhaps this kidnapping saved the Strat from being smashed by Kurt on stage. Though maybe not, maybe he loved that guitar enough to keep it, like his Jaguar. In any case, if it is ever found, it will be wonderful. Great guitar, Fujigen Strats of early 90-s is absolutely amazing.
I’ve replicated this guitar myself many times, but it actually wasn’t because of Kurt, it was because of Billie Joe of Green Day, because his Strat is like this. Cool to see the things Kurt threw together from pawn shop guitars and parts. I guess he never really had any attachments to guitars until his Jaguar which is why he experimented with so many and ended up destroying them.
Awesome video. Been waiting on this one for awhile. Cool to see someone else agree with me, I haven't seen or met anyone else who thinks the K strat beats the Vandalism strat. And honestly anything from 1990 or before regarding nirvana hits different.
I own the K Strat. I bought it from a girl named Jane Walsh in 93'. I never knew it was Kurt's (or that it was stolen, for that matter) until 2015. I have recently contacted a member representing the Cobain estate to tell my story, provide evidence, and possibly return it, but I got no response. I'm looking to sell it, but given it only belongs to Kurt, I want it to go to someone who will treat it in that fashion. Not just randomly sell at auction.
Never heard that riff from that 1990 footage at the start, really cool. Love the 1990 concerts, some great shows in that year. The Palladium concert on 9/17/90 is a favorite.
1990 was one of my favorite Nirvana eras I think it’s so cool, how they went from Chad Channing, which played on bleach, then to do Dale Crover, then to another drummer, then in late 1990 Dave Grohl finally join the band I remember in fecal matter that downer was such a dark song on the album and then on bleach they made it brighter. Then they made the Incesticide version. It’s so cool, how nirvana went through so many forms as a band honestly, I thought always Dave Grohl played on sliver and in a bloom, but apparently on the jam of the sunset show in 1990 in bloom was actually recorded with Chad Channing.
Don't know much about things Kurt used. But I do know Fender Strats Made in Japan during that time(1984 to 1987) had Gotoh pickups. And they had two different versions one with 3 single coils and one with 2 single coils and a humbucker in the bridge. So Kurt probably kept the Gotoh pickups and just did the angled mod on the humbucker himself or whoever did it for him.
NirvanaGuitars, I have a suggestion. I know that you’ll probably get around to this, but will you maybe do a video on recreating Bleach with Nevermind tone? There’s a video called About a Girl with Nevermind tone, and it has a watery, small-clone sort or effect used in the intro and solo. I think that would be an interesting idea, that’s all🙂
Just to let you know, in the Intro at Krist Novoselic's residence 40 S Street, Tacoma, WA while Kurt is playing his White MIJ St-62 White Stratocaster with the K Records Sticker on it, Kurt is not playing a Randall Commander II 2x12 Combo Amp... That's Kurts Randall Commander II RG-120 Amp Head on a Sound Tech 2x12 Cabinet (same one that Kurt used on top of a Marshall 1960B Straight 4x12 Cabinet during the first USA Bleach Tour June 22-July 18, 1989.
The older JBs didn’t have Seymour Duncan on them either did they ? The antiquity SD don’t but it could’ve been a 59 I think a 59 is a better choice for a HB mounted like that on a Strat , I think hot pickups get woofy mounted with the slanted towards the middle the out put of the strings being so much louder and thicker sounding compared to closer to the bridge.
My house must think it’s Terminal Einz, as the power went out about 1 minute into chapter 4. Still an awesome video nonetheless! I can’t wait for the Stopbar strat build!
I really wanna see a breakdown on the tone from The Man Who Sold The World at Live And Loud. It's so different to most of Kurt's tones and most similar to Curmudgeon.
Is there any reason why what is now called SAPPY used to be called Verse Chorus Verse??? I swear back in the 90s "sappy" was called "VCV"....anyone else from that era out there???
Thanks you for your video it helped me for my Nirvana keytar covers on my channel i bought the boss ds-2 and im looking for a chorus pedal like the small clone
He had JB in his Univox Phase I and his In Utero tour mustangs. That's it, not all of his guitars. He has this reputation of being a huge JB guy when he only used from them Oct 92 and on.
Hi Eric, nice video. I'd like to comment on a few things. The Krist's house footage was shot in the Halloween, so it was a few days after Leeds. It's possible that he bought this guitar at Guitar Maniacs, according to a GW article. It's unclear whether he bought only this one or got the TOM and Vandalism strat together with it. Sayin the K strat is a overlooked Cobain guitar, is so low I. Q. ; in fact it is the guitar he is holding in the most iconic live picture cobain, spinning on his shoulders at the Commodore , Ballroom in Vancouver B.C. Canada
Are you new here? The strat Kurt is most associated with is the Vandalism Strat, then it’s the sunburst Reading strat. I stand by saying that it’s always been overlooked, but I hope this video can play a small part in helping it get the attention it deserves
well, if billy corgan's stolen strat showed up after 30 or whatever years, nothing's impossible for the k strat.... but if it was stolen, they probably took the sticker off and flipped it since it was before worldwide nirvana explosion.. there's probably no way to prove it, if it were allegedly to show up somewhere. oh well, at least we have the music and the memories and such...

Gonna be good, love the videos, real inspiration and interesting to watch

i live in oly wa and its cool to see all the places kurt performed and lived and all that
According to my time zone, this video came out at one o'clock in the morning, but, damn it, I'm in
The k strat is my 3rd favorite kurt strat my 2nd is the vma strat and 1st is the vandalism strat

So Kurt probably kept the Gotoh pickups and just did the angled mod on the humbucker himself or whoever did it for him.
If you get to see several of the Fender Japan left-handed guitars from the K strat era, they all had single coils, none of them had a humbuker.
NirvanaGuitars, I have a suggestion.

What’s funny is Kurt is said to have liked the records K just distributed from other artists/labels than the ones K released of their artists
I have an old JB (eighties) and it is unmarked on the front, but it has the right code stamped underneath.
Fun fact Biting Elbows used a redition of this riff in the song Dustbus. Id recommend checking it out
My house must think it’s Terminal Einz, as the power went out about 1 minute into chapter 4. Still an awesome video nonetheless! I can’t wait for the Stopbar strat build!
Angled humbucker is similar thing that Eddie Van Halen had on his Franky
Just learned the other day he also had a question mark tattoo and some dots on the same arm as his K records tatt.
I really wanna see a breakdown on the tone from The Man Who Sold The World at Live And Loud. It's so different to most of Kurt's tones and most similar to Curmudgeon.
I love "Curmudgeon"! Back in the 90s my brother bought every single and import CD to hear every song by Nirvana.
It was just yesterday when I learned that Molly’s Lips was a cover. I asked Google to play it and it played the original song!
Great video
Thank you!
@@NirvanaGuitarsdo you have a discord server? If not you should make one
I have not 😮 tbh I'm not entirely sure how discord works! Have never been on it
Next you should talk about the Kay Catalina Archtop Blonde F Hole Archtop vintage Acoustic Guitar Kurt used on come as your are!
will you be doing videos on Basses in the future?
Nirvana is forever and wherever you are 🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥
I cant wait 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 its probly gonna be sooooo good like always😎😎
I can hardly wait!
0:23 Dang right it is 😎 why you think we both have vandys, but ey Good to learn on the K strat! Keep up the good work 👍
Is there any reason why what is now called SAPPY used to be called Verse Chorus Verse??? I swear back in the 90s "sappy" was called "VCV"....anyone else from that era out there???
Thanks you for your video it helped me for my Nirvana keytar covers on my channel i bought the boss ds-2 and im looking for a chorus pedal like the small clone
Kurt loved the seymour duncan JB humbucker. He had one in just about all of his guitars
He had JB in his Univox Phase I and his In Utero tour mustangs. That's it, not all of his guitars. He has this reputation of being a huge JB guy when he only used from them Oct 92 and on.
16:26 more that I think about it, a lot of Kurt’s stuff is probably floating around in a thrift store somewhere
All three most likely are from the same japanese model. As the first "iteration" of the TOM strat has similar features (the angle humbucker), I think the mods could have been done by the same person, but I think each strat had a different humbucker. There's one interview that Kurt mentioned something like he kept the Mosrite off the road for a year but it was stolen from him. I presume that he got this strat more to preserve the Mosrite. I don't this the K Sticker was one favorite from him, but I don't think it was "disposable" either. I'm more towards a "work horse" guitar. Kurt used the neck pickup in the distorted part of D7 from Reading, the clean part was the bridge pickup.
That opening riff sounds a ton like the foo fighters dear rosemary, Dave got some influence 🧐
I have an early 80's Duncan JB with no name printed on it. It's my understanding that JB's didn't have the name printed on them until '89. Good chance the bucker in the K strat is an earlier JB model.
Interesting, I have a Torino red late 80s MIJ Strat and the previous owner put a logo less SD 59 in the bridge. I gotta bring out my ds 1 and do some tone comparisons haha
Its ironic and iconic, that the last time the K strat was seen, was also the first time teen spirit was played live. That right there was the true ending of the bleach era (the best era) 😢
If you had to pick one.. k-records or vma strat? Would love to see a comparison, and tones back to back. Thanks!
Would be nice to have a Mosrite gospel or ventured II model to compare that D7 tone but I think you are right about the strat neck pickup
He also played univox hi-fliers that were Japanese copies of the mosrite just saying
First riff -- that's how Dear Rosemary was born lol
Do you plan on getting or making a veleno guitar?
day 1 of asking you to do the fender telecaster used by kurt during the Oceania Tour!!!!
Early Seymour duncan JBs didn't have the Seymour duncan logo. I had one. It had no logo
Was waiting for this to come out and I loved it and also question know any good ways to thicken up a bass tone
Can we have a history of the moseright guitar
cant waittt🔥🔥🔥
Great video!!! And i was wondering if you could do a nirvana live at the point theater in dublin ireland 1992 tone video, i think that would be cool!!
suggestions for the next guitar bulid single coil set I would suggest are Tonerider Pure Vintage or Tonerider Classic Blue
great video! what song do you play in the beginning (0:10)?
Thank you! I'm not sure if it has a name, I've seen it referred to as "Let Go!" by some fans but it's just a chord progression Kurt was playing in the background of that 1990 footage
@@NirvanaGuitars thanks!

Is it just me or do I find it a little funny that every time Eric puts together a new guitar he says it’s becoming his favorite 😂
The honeymoon phase is real RIP I should probably only do a history video on a guitar after I’ve had it for like over a year 😅
BUT The ET270 has legit stayed a top favorite ever since I got it, but K Strat is right behind it haha
@nirvavaguitars
Who made the pickgaurd? I'm in the middle of my own build and having trouble finding a pickgaurd. Was is Lomic Guitars?
Thanks!
when are we getting a Beans tone recreation?
I live fairly close to the k recs building
Dale told kurt that if he crashed into his drums that he would meet kurt with the same force...so kurt didn't jump into the drums
I read in heavier than heaven that Dave tattooed the k symbol on kurt
well, if billy corgan's stolen strat showed up after 30 or whatever years, nothing's impossible for the k strat.... but if it was stolen, they probably took the sticker off and flipped it since it was before worldwide nirvana explosion.. there's probably no way to prove it, if it were allegedly to show up somewhere. oh well, at least we have the music and the memories and such...
I thought his k records guitar had a red sticker on it

Hey nirvanaguitars im just curious where is your les paul now? the guitar you used on your old guitar covers.
Once again great work.
Whats your opinion on hot rails vs standard size humbucker?
My first real guitar was a white on white strat because of this guitar.
I thought to modify my strat similar to the K strat but in the end I ended up with double rails
11:36 their New Years eve 1993 set list was way bigger
no it wasn’t. Off Ramp 1990 was 31 songs, New Years Eve 1993 was 25 songs.
