I met Pat at a Germs reunion gig in 2009 in Brighton. He was way cool & super friendly, the only time I have ever been star-struck but I hid it well. The gig itself was tiny and I was directly in front of Pat for most of it, could not have been more than 2meters away. My friend and I had the singer (the actor) on our shoulders at times. Such a great memory.
That was after the movie I remember that. I met them in San Antonio tx, my girlfriend wanted to meet the actor who played Darby, all I wanted was to meet pat and Lorna, they were so fuckin cool. I wear my germs tattoo with pride
Yeah I came to the comment section to see if anyone else had realized that he is a time traveler who is going to meet Kurt’s brother and guitar tech in October this year’ it’s so crazy! He even had the footage to prove that is going to do all of those things somehow! I guess as a lot of people know’ there are some pretty lazing people out there’s and this dude is the me of the really incredible stuff ones’ 😂 But yeah it think it was last year that it happened’ I remember watching something about it on this channel about it’ ✌️👨🏻🍳🪿🦵🏻👖🕺🐴🍻
I used to work at Tower Records in Maryland when the Foo’s played a free show there. I waited in the autograph line for Dave and when it was my turn, Dave looked at my empty hands and up to my eyes and I said I didn’t want an autograph, just a handshake. He laughed and said that’s different and shook my hand. I’m freaking out on the inside cuz the drummer of Nirvana just called me different. I walk over to the freight elevator and Pat Smear follows me in and lights a cigarette and looks at me. I looked at him and rolled my eyes like he wasn’t even there. I’ll admit it, I’m not an envious person by nature but I was jealous of him.
So what a minute, you have a time machine?!?! You met Pat backstage in October of 2024 at ACL?! Hook a brother up man. I want to go back and hit a few Grateful Dead shows in the 80's!
Agree with Darby being a brilliant lyricist. Pat told a story in an interview that Darby left his written lyrics on the windscreen of David Bowie's car and got a note back from Bowie saying how good his lyrics are and to keep writing
Pat and his guitars always seem to be forgotten in Nirvana even though they made them sound like 10x more powerful and made both In Utero tours one of if not best tours in Nirvana. Glad to see some real recognition for him in Nirvana + his other work
Saw the Germs 3 times in 79/80 as a young kid. I was obsessed from day one. It’s true Pat never owned his own guitar until he showed up with the Red Hagstrom at The Starwood. A few months earlier he was playing a Mustang in the Darby Crash band. Great clip here 👍
If you’re not aware of it you should look into Jason Everman’s life story. He went from Nirvana guitarist to Delta Force/CAG special forces operator and has some really interesting stories.
As a recent Nirvana fan, like getting into them late last year, I liked Pat's added vocals and guitars in songs especially in songs like Heart Shaped Box. Also his added energy for the Live and Loud version of Blew, so amazing

There's videos of rehearsals from alot of NIRVANA shows some of which are Live & loud & Krist mom's house but the house is not the greatest quality but Live & loud for being in the 90's is pretty good for its time
"who is the greatest punk rock guitarist, that's easy! PAT SMEAR from the germs, 45 grave, nirvana and of course foo fighters! The guy didn't even have a guitar during the tenure of the germs, he's just borrow equipment, do I suggest it, NO! But that's fucking awesome!" -Fat Mike from NOFX! Fat Mike also constantly hails Nirvana for breaking into the mainstream, "thanks to those guys making such an awesome punk record, people gained interest in what was going on in the underground, we went from making $100 a gig, to people booking us and paying us $1000, over night!" Great content as always! Love your videos! 🖤
Early 2000's I was going surfing in Pacific beach Sand Diego, at 6 am. While stopped at a stoplight with fog looming on a early sunday morning. I seen Pat swaying down the sidewalk with a hot chic under each arm. A huge smile came on my face, and could not help myself. I yelled out. " PAT SMEAR YOU FUCKING ROCK STAR!" He yelled back, "Fuck yeah I am" 🤣🤣❤🏴☠twas epic!
Good job on that build. I have 3 Hagstroms currently (two HIIIs from the 60s and a 2005 Swede reissue). I used to buy these guitars all the time when you could get em for about $125 (the 90s), and while I always enjoyed them, they invariably ended up being sold for rent. I must have had half a dozen over the years. Now, I really appreciate these wonderful Swedish instruments. The Chinese reissues are great too. I've ogled a few F20T's over the year, but haven't copped. I love that you found an original neck and did that build. Hagstrom is/was a very special guitar maker. Sorely underappreciated, for the most part. The Swede might be one of the most serious guitars ever built. They don't call it the Les Paul killer for nothing!
There was a FF show on MTV when i was a freshman in HS from the 95 euro leg of the tour. The show was called “Im Ok EuroK” and pat played that guitar I believe in a couple of the songs
My friend, cult filmmaker Damon Packard, went to Santa Monica College with Pat and Don Bolles. He's on teh cover of Group Sex by the Circle Jerks. He was never into punk. He likes Janet Jackson and Madonna.
Pat is now a full blown hagstrom collector, with many vintage models in his huge collection. And of course there's the Pat Smear signature model from the modern incarnation of hagstrom. I own a couple vintage HIIN OT, Swedes, Vikings, Super Swede.... And 2 modern era issues. Great axes.
@16:00 Pat did play on the foo fighters record, fx. on My Hero, but he used a hollow body Hagström and Kurt Cobain's live rig. Proof here: ruclips.net/video/UN6-CBF41Sk/видео.htmlsi=UOT3aYXnnhaJZtA_&t=916 and ruclips.net/video/1LDGYI2oaVI/видео.htmlsi=4gYRbniKU3eAAL2b&t=410
Very cool guitar. Looks like an SG mixed with a Mustang. I've always thought he seemed like a cool, funny guy, but I have to admit I've never thought much about him as a guitarist. My favorite FF stuff is still the first album, which he doesn't actually play on. I saw them live on the Color & Shape tour, but I'm embarrassed to say I don't remember if Pat was there. He deserves more consideration than I have given him. Once the Foos really got going, it was always the Dave and Taylor Show to me, and I never thought much about anyone else. Fascinating breakdown on the two-guitar arrangements with Nirvana. Kind of how Oasis did it back in the day, with Bonehead playing the barre chords and Noel strumming the open chords.
Great video. I have a 60s Hagstrom 1. They have by far the thinnest necks I’ve ever seen and have a really unique sound. The bridge pickup is crazy bright, similar to what you hear on spaghetti western soundtracks. You can get them sometimes for about $500. I have nicer guitars that I’ve collected over the years but I probably play my Hagstrom the most, just something about it.
Think of being the only guitar player in your band, don’t own a guitar and just showing up to play a show like, “Whatever. I’ll figure something out” Hey Pat, we’re ready to start tracking your guitars, where’s your gear? “What gear?”
I can't accurately express how glad I am that J Mascis didn't join Nirvana. While I'm sure it would've been great, the universe knew it shouldn't have been.
Nice to hear the guitar inspired you to write your own stuff. You’re lucky man I’ve lived 20 miles south of Seattle since 6th grade in 93 and moved from Alaska and discovered Nirvana after hearing weird al not knowing he didn’t write the teen spirit parody until seeing Nirvana on beavis and butthead and have been hooked ever since. You are very lucky for all the cool Nirvana related experiences you’ve had and I’m rather jealous. It’s obvious you’ve done a shitload of research on Kurt and the band and are very passionate. I used to ride my bike to green river community college and go on the stage at the lindbloom student center where Nirvana had played 4 years before and remember thinking how cool it was cus I was able to walk on the stage they played on. They also had a jukebox that had drain you on it and I played that song a million times which is my favorite song by them maybe…..It’s a tough decision but THANK YOU for such cool videos they are put together very well!!!
I recently had a Hagstrom F20T, which is very similar except with a strat-style vibrato and jack plate on the front.. It just didn't really impress me that much, so I traded it.
You made me wanna learn to play nirvana on my guitar thanks to you I can play three songs all the way through Come as you are The man who sold the world Smells like teen spirit Thanks man
Thank you for doing this it was a very well-oiled machine.... For me Nirvana had a full sound when Pat jumped on the train , I can listen to a 1993 / 94 live show and then the studio album of Utero and still feel it
pretty cool. nice to get a side quest in on the nirvana/kurt nerd out adventure... next, it'd be funny if you did a Big John Duncan tone recreation from those like, 3 songs he played at the one show... THAT would be full nirvana nerd completionist. party on
Thanks for the heart man.. I will add it was Kurt showing he was serious about his career that’s why the ending doesn’t make sense but who knows really I’m big nirvana fan 2004 when I started taking playing seriously and my brother played at trees in Dallas a month after Kurt hit the guy with his guitar. Seen nirvana at reunion arena three months before his death. And turned me on to never mind over after that.
Pat changed out the bridge pickup also. It's not original. It looks like it's an uncovered humbucker. You can see 2 rows of slugs in the updated picture of the black Hagstrom. The picture at the time marker of 4:50. It appears the pickup has an open top with the 12 slugs showing and a chrome ring that surrounds the outer part of the pickup)
It was either a Dave Grohl interview, or maybe in his narrated book - Dave tells the story of first meeting with Pat when he was actually recruiting people for the FF. Dave said Pat did not have a guitar, so they stopped by Guitar Center and Dave bought Pat two brand new axes. One was a white LP, I forget the other. So by that story, the Hagstrom was lost stolen or sold.
Pat's red hagstrom is in now in the Punk Rock Museum in Vegas! The best part is you can actually play it in the jam room! if youre ever in the area pls come check it out
I’ve saw photos of that one while doing research, and I don’t believe it’s the same guitar since the one in Vegas has a logo on the headstock and no signs of a tailpiece once being on there. Even if it’s not this exact one, it’s still Pat’s guitar and it’d be a dream come true to play it!!
@@NirvanaGuitars i was just researching that too and youre right there are those discrepencies. I cant seem to figure out what that one is however. It is said at the museum that this one is the last Germs guitar and first Nirvana guitar, so im here trying to validate that for myself lol. I will keep looking and asking around about it cause now im perplexed!
@@mightymilan4498 it’s totally a possibility!! But those discrepancies are what me not include it in this video. If you happen to find confirmation that that one is this exact guitar, I will definitely do some sort of update and credit you!
Nirvana is one of my all-time favourite bands. I never knew much about Pat Smear. I always remember the way kurt said his name when he introduced him with a kind of laugh in his voice. Now I kind of know why.
hey, you should try doing tabs videos for both kurt and pat's parts on live and loud... you're the channel we trust the most for sonically replicating nirvana, so that would make everyone happy i think. dunno if that's too much work but damn it would be so nice
Hagstroms were always “weird, off brand” type guitars that the snobs turned their noses up at. Clearly they’re fantastic instruments that deserve a closer look!
Wait, so you're telling me I learned how to play all of the Pat Smear tracks for Nirvana on accident? I just used the chords that sounded the most right.
Pat was perfect for Nirvana, it is so sad it wasn't for too long, it is also a shame Pat was not around town by the time they recorded YKYR, it would have been his first (and last) official recording with Nirvana.
I was able to see the West fronted Germs. Pat was on another level compared to the rest of the band. Fantastic set. I'm not a big Foo fan, but i fully agree, Wasting Light is their best album. Rated by me of course.
That radio friendly unit shifter riff is not menacing. It’s so bland it should have ended up scrapped. Also Pat smear the woman beater is not on any nirvana record thankfully and is not a member just a touring guitarist.
As an old punker it's amazing to see him go from the Germs to backing up Mick Jagger on SNL; what a ride for that guy!

There's videos of rehearsals from alot of NIRVANA shows some of which are Live & loud & Krist mom's house but the house is not the greatest quality but Live & loud for being in the 90's is pretty good for its time
I love Pat Smear!!
Fat Mike also constantly hails Nirvana for breaking into the mainstream, "thanks to those guys making such an awesome punk record, people gained interest in what was going on in the underground, we went from making $100 a gig, to people booking us and paying us $1000, over night!"
Great content as always!
KURT ASKED J MASCIS TO JOIN NIRVANA?!??!? i swear i always learn something new when i watch one of your history videos
My comment!!😃 1:22
To the A.I. : I love obscure guitar history like this, please put more in my feed like you did this channel 🙂
Do you think we might ever get a good story on what so personally my favorite guitar of Pat’s, the Buck Owens Harmony acoustic The American?
Think of being the only guitar player in your band, don’t own a guitar and just showing up to play a show like, “Whatever. I’ll figure something out”
Hey Pat, we’re ready to start tracking your guitars, where’s your gear?
“What gear?”
Hey bro, Hollywood Rock Festival 1993 Rio de Janeiro Tone PLZ!!!!!!!!!
I can't accurately express how glad I am that J Mascis didn't join Nirvana. While I'm sure it would've been great, the universe knew it shouldn't have been.
5:57 imagine saying that at only 22, that’s like smth bands say that have been around for 40yrs
19:57 Nice build!!!
I've always thought his Hagstrom looked really cool and sounds awesome as well, this was awesome
I’ve said a dozen times the utero tour was Kurt and nirvana displaying perfection. They sounded just like the record
You made me wanna learn to play nirvana on my guitar thanks to you I can play three songs all the way through
Come as you are
The man who sold the world
Smells like teen spirit
Thanks man
Technically it's 2 Nirvana songs.
hell yeah man
Thank you for doing this it was a very well-oiled machine....
Another W video by NirvanaGuitars!
A video on Jason Everman's telecaster seen on the Bleah Album Cover would be awesome.
Pat Smear is underrated
i love how you used some footage from their only ever show in CT at the Moon Theater cool little surprise as a resident of CT who loves that show
Watching this on my work break. Nice video! Awesome to see a Pat related build!
Does anybody know what volume knobs Eric used for this guitar build?
Wait, so you're telling me I learned how to play all of the Pat Smear tracks for Nirvana on accident? I just used the chords that sounded the most right.
Pat was perfect for Nirvana, it is so sad it wasn't for too long, it is also a shame Pat was not around town by the time they recorded YKYR, it would have been his first (and last) official recording with Nirvana.
Pat is one of the best guitarists in my opinion. Also want to see his guitar at unplugged
Please no more Hagstrom videos, they're reasonably priced LOL.
Pat Smear is the happiest rock gatarist of all time,he made nirvana, and Foo is not Foo without Pat Smear, and he is a legend.
Don't forget the movie Studio 666 where he sleeps on the kitchen table. So underrated in Rock.
