Frusciante is one the most original guitarists in the last 40 years. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is peak RHCP (imo), is their best album and an absolute masterpiece, start to finish. The rawness of the production on that album perfectly captured the punk and funk influences that the over-produced subsequent albums failed to emulate.

Sure but you can draw a line from any great guitar player back to another guitar player. The best guitarists usually are plucked from the 60s and 70s because the field was still very open. The closer you get to the present the more difficult it becomes to innovate since so much has already been done. There's only so many chords, strings and notes.

When talking about RHCP one should also mention south california blues/beach rock. While you can route this stuff back to the catalog of Jimmy, it developed in parallel. One big difference is the single note playing in the californian music is quite narrow with a lot of space for the vocals and bass. While the chords open up for a huge chorus. In Jimmys playing the chords are turned down a bit into the rythm work. The solo notes on the other hand start right where the bass ends and reach well into the vocal range

Nice! comprehensive analysis🙌🏼My three favorite solo albums of John's though, were written and recorded during the period of time that you said he put the guitar down; Niandra LaDes, Usually Just a T-shirt, and Smile From the Streets You Hold. Yes, he was a junkie for most of this time period, '94 - '97. Yes, most people find them very difficult to listen to, especially Smile, an album John admits he released strictly for drug money. BUT, I don't think John ever really put the guitar away. Like Hendrix in many ways, the instrument is an extension of himself; through the very best of times to the very worst of times and back.

Disagree, any of John’s work is so undrrrated because it should be even more talked about than it already is, klinghoffer never had what John did

thats a good point about time around californication, that it was renesance in way how john play compare to his older style and he returned to it lately in Stadium arcadium. Also the rip offs are quite fascinating :D Also stron influence for John was Jimmy Page who he adore and one time in his early life believed that he is perfect creation of guitarist. :D
Also if you want to go deeper I made video about how John looks on creation proces and music as such:

Listen to Vini Reilly from the band Durutti Column, John has said he is the best guitarist he has ever heard.

I'm gonna be that guy: for all we know, that quote attributed to Stravinsky is made up, as it was also attributed to Picasso by Steve Jobs. T S Elliot was the one who said something along those lines when talking about other poets.

Frusciante isa very talented guitarist, and by no means do I mean to diminish him or his talent. His solo music, his collaborations, he is incredibly impressive and accomplished. That being said, he is nowhere near “the best” (whatever the hell that means anyway). He is a giant amongst pop music guitarists, influential and trusted amongst indie guitarists, and respected by most everyone who hasn’t played with Mike Patton.
Calling him the best, if anything, just diminishes his contributions to music by applying an inappropriate platitude to his carreer

He's a great song writer and a good guitarist but if you want a amazing suggestion for a guitarist to check out that deserves alot more recognition, it's Yvette Young, her band is called Covet. Chech her out and thank me later.

Funny when non guitarists make videos about guitarists and get almost everything about the guitar playing wrong

RHCP is the only band I can think of that the singer and guitarist are the most famous members of the band, flea and Chad smith are certainly today Anthony is certainly way up there as all singers are but I’d bet especially recently more people would recognize Chad smith today or at least as much as Anthony it’s the complete opposite of what’s normal. Normally the singer and guitarist are the most famous and the bass player is forgotten and the drummer is just there in the middle
