When my dad was the lead sound engineer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, he said that Frusciante was always his favorite to talk to. Frusciante loved music more than anything and they would talk about it for hours, because my dad is also a huge rock fan.
Frusciante and Jonny Greenwood are my favorite guitarists of the last 30 years. They don't really sound like someone else, when you hear them, you can tell it's them, very distinct.
He's the one artist i can or will say, honestly saved my life. His life, his work in rhcp, his solo albums, ataxia, his interviews, all of it. I don't have the right words or enough words. Hes an endless inspiration and source of hope for me and many others.
Frusciante is one the most original guitarists in the last 40 years. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is peak RHCP (imo), is their best album and an absolute masterpiece, start to finish. The rawness of the production on that album perfectly captured the punk and funk influences that the over-produced subsequent albums failed to emulate.
John doesn't just come up with riffs and play guitar chords, he comes up with super catchy melodies. The Under The Bridge guitar melodies are some of the best of all time!

I dreamed of seeing John Frusciante live since I was a kid, finally between 2022 and 2023 I was lucky enough to see him with the Peppers 9 times (on my yt channel I shared some of the most amazing moments of the tour). Every little sacrifice was WORTH IT. My favorite artist of all time❤
Saw him onece on 06 then waited for 15 years while I truly discovered his music. It was magical when he came back. Saw him 6 times and all were front row these past 2 years.
Frusciante fans should check out his interviews on Broken Record with Rick Rubin. They did multiple sessions and it’s the most in depth I’ve ever heard John go in an interview with anyone about his life, career, and playing.
Excellent video... As a full blown guitar addict and half ass guitar player I have the utmost respect and admiration for Johns artistry. He's a beast of a player no doubt!
Sure but you can draw a line from any great guitar player back to another guitar player. The best guitarists usually are plucked from the 60s and 70s because the field was still very open. The closer you get to the present the more difficult it becomes to innovate since so much has already been done. There's only so many chords, strings and notes.
Man that boy really did a number on John. The few years he spent in deep addiction took a big toll on him. Came back looking totally different and I think harmed his ability to write.
Frusciante is an incredible musical genius and definitely very emotionally empathetic. I get a lot of satisfaction from his artistic expression. When he hits rock bottom because of addiction, he was still continue creating. His music as a wonderful whole with its unique harmony and its an incredible experience for the listener. He creates melodies that belongs to another universe and this is really hard to believe. Long live John!
When talking about RHCP one should also mention south california blues/beach rock. While you can route this stuff back to the catalog of Jimmy, it developed in parallel. One big difference is the single note playing in the californian music is quite narrow with a lot of space for the vocals and bass. While the chords open up for a huge chorus. In Jimmys playing the chords are turned down a bit into the rythm work. The solo notes on the other hand start right where the bass ends and reach well into the vocal range
I think that title belongs to the great Travis Meeks……painfully forgotten and underrated; guy is for the acoustic guitar what Jimi Hendrix was for the electric.
Fantastic video mate. Personally, I’ve always admired John F.- I hear everything you’ve talked about and feel everything you can’t verbalise in his playing. Really enjoyed this video- “A squid eating dough down a polyethylene bag is faster and bulbous- got me”. If you know the lyrics then you know who I think you should do next. ✌️
Overall a pretty good video, only thing I would say is that you missed out the massive influence Johnny Marr played on John’s approach to guitar, especially from Californication onwards in regards to arpeggiating melodies and moving beyond pentatonic based stuff. John has commented on this and his love for the Smiths records on multiple occasions.
No electric guitar has ever sounded like what he did in Scar Tissue, he really created a language for himself and he is the kind of player you recognize after hitting only one note!
A MASSIVE PART TO HENDRIX AND JOHNS playing is using the thumb as the root note holder on the e so you and do those fantastic pull offs!!! Once I cracked that! I was able to learn Under the Bridge by ear
i've played guitar for a lot of years. i still can't play the riff from Snow (hey oh) up to speed without butchering it. Frusciante writes great licks.

Nice! comprehensive analysis🙌🏼My three favorite solo albums of John's though, were written and recorded during the period of time that you said he put the guitar down; Niandra LaDes, Usually Just a T-shirt, and Smile From the Streets You Hold. Yes, he was a junkie for most of this time period, '94 - '97. Yes, most people find them very difficult to listen to, especially Smile, an album John admits he released strictly for drug money.
