I feel so bad that soo many grunge rockers were not able to go through the miraculous recovery phase that john did because he single handedly proved that it could be done
He for sure didn’t do it single-handedly. It takes an army of people that deeply care to make the change come about. The reason so many people fail at quitting is because they have no one in their life that truly cares enough to get involved. John was infinitely fortunate to have those people close to him. It makes one wonder if he would have been successful had he not been famous…
Correct. Plenty of people tried to intervene & he went to rehab countless times. The day before his death, he threatened Mike Starr if he went & got help. He made a choice long before that day
He's one of the few guitarist so heavily influenced by Hendrix while still able to sound like himself while playing. I always think it's because the playing comes from the most honest part of his soul. I was so happy when they announced he was back in the band.
Well Hendrix is certainly out of Frusciante's league. John has his signature sound that made BSSM and Californication what hey are but since then I don't know, there's not much going on. Great of course that he made it out of his own hell.

Niandra Lades/T-Shirt is still quite an overlooked and underappreciated masterpiece. There are a lot of borderline cult followers of Frusciante who worship anything he has released, but I objectively highly regard that album over all his other releases. There is not another record that I've heard which totally manifests the feeling and experience of a dejected, depressed, alienated soul turning to drugs. It's so raw and very personal because of it all while showing tremendous creative talent and beautiful displays of guitar and song writing. The vocals despite their shakiness provide extra emphasis to his state of mind, which is also carried in the arms of his guitar and musical virtuosity. It's an experience I've had like no other, and as someone who has experienced what John has experienced I can say that album captures it better than anything else. Nothing can top it. It's one of the very best albums of the 90s, an avant-garde classic. It's sad to see John in this state, but if there is a silver lining its only because of his downward spiral this album was made possible and helped me and others in very dark times.
Such a beautiful video. One of the many reasons rhcp is my favourite band is the unbreakable bond they all seem to have, and the unconditional love. So glad John is alive and well, and also back in the band ❤️

John Frusciante is a survivor, an innovator and an absolutely genial guitar player. The 2 albums that RHCP have released this year are amazing in my opinion. I didn't care much for Love Unlimited when it came out but The Return Of The Dream Canteen impressed me right away and a lot of JF's guitar work on it is amazing. I have since gone back to Love Unlimited and like it a lot more now. None of this (or Califonication, By The Way ansd Stadium Arcadium) would have happened if John hadn't come through those dark times. Neither would I'm With You or The Getaway which the band did without John after he left a second time. I think those 2 albums are much better than many people seem to think and that Josh Klinghoffer did an amazing job during his stint with RHCP. To be honest I think his firing was harsh especially as The Getaway was, for me a very strong album with three outstanding tracks - The Getaway, Detroit and especially Dark Necessities which I would put in my all time RHCP top 10 songs. Still Josh was let go and John has come back. I think that Return Of The Dream Canteen is right up there with their very best work. It's so wonderful that John Frusciante survived.
This hits home for me i have been fighting addiction sense 15 im 31 now i almost lost my arm from shooting up and the scar remains glad he got his life together
I can't even look at the thumbnail because of how scary he looks. Night and day difference between now and then. I'm glad he recovered and rejoined the Chili Peppers
I saw them (RHCP) just last week, it's incredible that John made it through this very dark time to come out the other end, alive, and able to continue doing what he loves and create music we can all enjoy and love in turn. The dude becomes world famous overnight in his early 20s but he felt like a performing puppet, and the need to pursue his own destiny is stronger than doing touring with the band loves and a foundational part of. It was an incredibly self destructive journey and it's almost like he needed to reach the precipice of death and depression to realise the other path is better. He is lucky but it also speaks volumes to the strengths of his friendship and band members.
This is by far my favourite video because of the happy ending, the song otherside playing with the little snippets of John getting sober brought a tear to my eye. We love John frusciante!
Im so glad hes still here with us. Such a legend and voice of creativity. Now he runs a techno label and makes electronic music which I recommend checking out. I love his broad scope of musical output and perspective on creative freedom
As someone who also knows from first hand experience and to quote the great Richard Ashcroft; *the drugs don’t work they just make you worse* I had reached my life long dream of becoming an artist, selling out solo exhibitions all around the world, celebrities collecting my work. And the old cliche happened to me and I ended up as an opiate/heroin addict now stuck on methadone for the past 5 years. I’ve lost everything and I am at rock bottom. I’ve sold off everything I loved and collected over my life. I’ve lost everything and everyone. I still have my very loving and supportive family which I’m beyond grateful for. The stuff robs you of everything. I’ve got chronic fatigue and severe depression and haven’t painted in 4 years now. But this year I’m taking control. I’m getting off it all and going completely sober where I live my best life. I’ve done it once before and I know I can do it again. But man it’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through. And the hardest part is about to begin when I start lowering and then staying off it. The drugs don’t work. They just make you worse.
I found the peppers in 89 for mothers milk. BSSM was great as well. In 99 I fell in love with them all over again. Bought by the way and enjoyed it very much. In 06 I started playing guitar because of Stadium Arcadium. That album is a beautiful gift from John. When he left the peppers in 09 I was bummed but still he was influential to me. I’m glad he’s back. He is by far the most influential guitarist of my 47 year lifetime.
John was literally standing at death’s door. He was mentally and physically at the bowels of the earth. He was close to becoming another musical casualty like Syd Barrett and Nick Drake.
I was in a housefire and I broke out a window lacerating the wrist of my fretting hand. I was distraught. 2nd, 3rd degree burns and a cyt flexor tendon. I worked through PT and my friend told me Frusciante was in a fire too and had to relearn guitar. It made me feel so empowered I got working on it right away. Fast forward I find out it was from drug use but still the same really. Amazing guy
If youre interested in hearing johns side of this story after 25 years of reflection, he details it on Rick Rubin’s broken record, released 3 weeks ago
wow, I had no idea about this... I am from the 91 so to me he was always this handsome talented guitarist, which btw, is the main reason why I have long hair now. This was so impactful, I am so glad he was given a chance and that he took it. Wow..

Hey man, just discovered your channel and as a die hard fan of the one and only, the Great John Frusciante I just wanted to commend you on doing John justice. You gave him the respect he deserves. He truly is a genius and for those that know, know. We feel like it’s an honour to be on the planet at the same time as this enigmatic & beautiful soul. He almost lost both of his arms due to gangrene as well as his life to a house fire (and addiction). It would have been such a cruel tragedy had he lost his arms from such a young age and before all the masterpieces he’s given us since. Man, what a journey he’s been on. He’s truly ahead of his time and often misunderstood. His solo work has been a massive influence on me and my exploration in art; in painting and in making music. Long live John Frusciante 💙
Its amazing how the most creative and intelligent people of this world end up very disappointed in their success. A lot of it has to do with how business infiltrates the artist's love for their art form and thus destroying the very paradigm that the artist lives for. As a musician and songwriter myself, its a very tough journey bc everyone wants to be part of your success but nobody wants to give you the well deserved attention until half the planet knows your art. Its a weird life but I wouldnt have it any other way!
So grateful he made it through to the otherside. Think of all the amazing music we would have missed. God bless all the struggling souls out there. Dont give up!
So thankful he survived. I truly wouldn't be who I am without Californication, By The Way, and Stadium Arcadium. Those albums actually changed my life forever, I'm not exaggerating.
"He had some people who truly loved him". Flea didn't follow John around for years begging him to get clean. He had to let John go his own way but also never let the door close on him. As someone who has dealt with extreme addiction in loved ones this is the hardest part. If you keep bailing them out they will just keep relapsing. You HAVE to let them hit rock bottom but also be there for them when THEY decide they are ready to be helped. Tough love isn't easy for either party, but that's love- being there after everyone else has turned their back. Saying hey man, I still believe in you. I still believe in us. I'll give you that second chance because I love you. But you absolutely cannot become an enabler. Flea is the reason I picked up an instrument. Zero music inclination whatsoever- I am completely missing the factor that made Ringo great- timing, tempo, rythm NONE, but Flea just makes the bass look so damn crazy sexy cool that I gotta try!
Thank goodness he survived, unlike his predecessor, the gifted & ultimately tragic Hillel Slovek, he was unable to shake the weight of heroin addiction. So many people today are unaware of the RHCP's original guitarist & beloved friend of Flea & AK, he too tried to stop, but relapsed & died, much too young & forever in their 💕 hearts. John Frusciante was just a kid, a minor when he joined a band he obsessively followed & was a huge fan of. His talent was staggeringly astute & placing him on the celebrated list of the absolute best guitarists that ever were & rightly so, for he is uniquely gifted.
I remember seeing them 1999 John just got back with the band at the rolling Rock music festival in Pennsylvania it was probably one the best concerts I've seen..
John Frusciante is an icon. Dealing with his own demons will always be an inspirational story that people need to know. if you cant handle the pressure anymore hopefully you let others carry some of the load off of you✌️
SO FAR, he's made it. Good for him, it means great music for us and i truly wish him godspeed fighting this. One of the few bands i would pay hundreds to see and a big reason are his riffs. Incredible.
I went and checked that concert out because of this comment. Mate, you’re right, it’s amazing! I appreciate the Peppers but have never gotten super, super into them but that is one amazing performance. John’s voice sounds amazing too. Thanks for sharing.

It reminds me of Syd Barrett recordings honestly, I’m glad John made his way back, poor Syd was too far gone
This hits home for me i have been fighting addiction sense 15 im 31 now i almost lost my arm from shooting up and the scar remains glad he got his life together
And now he's back! I'm seeing RHCP and the strokes next year! Two of my favorite bands. Woot!
I can't even look at the thumbnail because of how scary he looks. Night and day difference between now and then. I'm glad he recovered and rejoined the Chili Peppers
One hot minute is not disappointing
It's only disappointing to people who have no taste. Or to Frusciante, but you can't blame him for that.
What hits 🤙
And he loooks sooo damn healthy and attractive now!!!
i love john. his guitar playing really gets me deep inside. long live john frusciante.
Man...My gift from youtube today was this channel. Period.

So much damn talent in that band. It’s crazy.
I always wanted to know more about this chapter of the band. This video was really well put together. Thank you
This video was great timing, I just had my first listen to Stadium Arcadium.
This video is very well done and needs more attention ASAP !
Wow, love this… Californication is literally one of the Greatest Albums(of any genre) in history!
As someone who also knows from first hand experience and to quote the great Richard Ashcroft; *the drugs don’t work they just make you worse*
I had reached my life long dream of becoming an artist, selling out solo exhibitions all around the world, celebrities collecting my work.
They just make you worse.
john gives me inspiration to get sober
I found the peppers in 89 for mothers milk. BSSM was great as well. In 99 I fell in love with them all over again. Bought by the way and enjoyed it very much. In 06 I started playing guitar because of Stadium Arcadium. That album is a beautiful gift from John. When he left the peppers in 09 I was bummed but still he was influential to me. I’m glad he’s back. He is by far the most influential guitarist of my 47 year lifetime.
What do you think of the new album?
@@XxTheShootingStarxX I listened to it a few times and come to realize I like only one song...it’s only natural.
Really good watch! Good work!
Thank you!
Thanks I just found it on here
Glad John is better and the guys helped support him to get better
He’s our generations Jimi Hendrix
wow, I had no idea about this... I am from the 91 so to me he was always this handsome talented guitarist, which btw, is the main reason why I have long hair now. This was so impactful, I am so glad he was given a chance and that he took it. Wow..
Heard this story before, but it was told well this time .. thank you
Some of us have been there at our bottom and that shit wakes you the F up BIGTIME……….!!!!!!!!! John is a miracle and I hope one day he will have children to love 💕 and carry that’s amazing gift 💝 of magic and so talented to share……..12steps is an amazing life saving gift 💝
Awesome video! Really appreciate all the research you must do for these videos, and the concise presentation :)
Hope you're doing well!
That's so horrifying to hear about. What an incredible comeback story. I'm gonna enjoy seeing them live next year even more now.
Stay clean John. Stay at peace. Stay rocking.
thankfully hes still with us
Amen!!!
So happy this video could be titled “lost” instead of “last”.
It's amazing that he is still alive
Also a form of self sabotaging when things are going great in life. Internally, perhaps he felt he didn’t deserve it and then proceeded to use.
Seeing John in that state and trying to equate it to the man who created that riff in "Snow" is almost impossible.
What a story! Proving you should never give up on anyone you love. Flea saved this guys life for sure.
From rock bottom to rock legend!! Quite an inspiration for everyone ❤
I’ve always heard it was Flea that reached out to John but I never heard about the ultimatum he gave Chad & Anthony
So grateful he made it through to the otherside. Think of all the amazing music we would have missed. God bless all the struggling souls out there. Dont give up!
In most parallel universes, John Frusciante died sometime around 1996. We’re just lucky we live in one of the few where he survived.
So thankful he survived. I truly wouldn't be who I am without Californication, By The Way, and Stadium Arcadium. Those albums actually changed my life forever, I'm not exaggerating.
Lol that's pretty sad. Those albums are pop garbage

John Frusciante é o exemplo de superação ❤
Wow this video just made Otherside have new meaning to me. Thank you for the great content.
What did it mean to you before?
Your videos are incredible. Please don’t stop!!! These videos are too good to not grow a following!
So glad he is ok and living his best life
We have lost way too many people to addiction
♥️🎶🤘
Man , I had a buddy who was all about John's solo stuff, we were listening, but couldn't hear it... RIP bennos
Dude killed River Phoenix. He's the one that said "drink this riv, it'll make you feel fabulous"
I so love John he is a beautiful being. Too rare to die young.
_"Too weird to live, and too rare to die."_
Frusciante is in the top 5 creative guitar minds of all time… period.
People rarely come back from the state he was in. He was as end stage as one can be.
I remember seeing them 1999 John just got back with the band at the rolling Rock music festival in Pennsylvania it was probably one the best concerts I've seen..
John Frusciante is an icon. Dealing with his own demons will always be an inspirational story that people need to know. if you cant handle the pressure anymore hopefully you let others carry some of the load off of you✌️
I never liked the RHCP. BUT JOHN FRUSCIANTE IS COOL.
SO FAR, he's made it. Good for him, it means great music for us and i truly wish him godspeed fighting this.
One of the few bands i would pay hundreds to see and a big reason are his riffs. Incredible.
That otherside ending vocals at slane castle is the most heavenly performance of all time
100%
I went and checked that concert out because of this comment. Mate, you’re right, it’s amazing! I appreciate the Peppers but have never gotten super, super into them but that is one amazing performance. John’s voice sounds amazing too. Thanks for sharing.

i always imagined those scars were from burns - damn, did not know it was so much darker.
It took me a lot of years to get my skin back out on display and find myself after addiction. Scar Tissue is my favourite song funnily enough.
I am so glad to see how happy and healthy John looks in the present.
Jesus H. Thank God he’s still here!!
I read in an RHCP book that it was 5 wholes years Frusciante wasted shooting up.
