This man has seen the darkest depths of addiction and yet he managed to overcome his demons and he's still so dedicated to his craft and passion for music. Nothing but respect for him. The Chillis are a shadow of who they were while John was with them.

It's one of the most horrendous and cruel things a human being can possibly endure and the fact that this "dumbass" survived it in the state he was in shows he likely has more will than either of us combined.

If you watch this documentary right after their SNL perfomance from 92 everything makes perfect sense. He hated the commercialism and what his music had become. If you add hard drugs to the fact that his art that he poured himself into was being abused in his opinion then it's no surprise he ended up here.
I’ve got a friend in Rotterdam who loves the RHCPs since I first sent her “Californication”. I said Dave Navarro was an excellent guitarist, but Frusciante has a style better style for a unique grunge-funk kind of band like the Chili Peppers. This is the example I sent her without taking time to listen to it. She wrote me back, struggling with her English, using adjectives like “upsetting” and “disturbing”.
Music is a powerful form of communication with the world beyond ours, when he hears "ghost" hes putting all of his energy physically and spiritually which attracts the spirits....thats why the band could only hear em so distinctively and no one else.
Goddamn, Frusciante escaped heavy drug addiction, Clapton escaped drugs and alcohol and he didn't get on the helicopter that would have killed him, Keith Richards escaped heavy drug addiction, Jimmy Page escaped his attempted murder, it's a miracle those three are alive and pretty well, imagine what would have been to lose those 4 gods in addiction to Hendrix, Vaughan, Duane Almann, George Harrison and others
I just realized, when he says "getting kicked in the thigh by someone you look up to alters you" he might of been referring to the SNL Stone Cold Bush incident where Anthony kicked him. People claimed he cried backstage.
What I don't get is how he got butthurt after Blood Suger Sex Magik because they were too popular, but even simply after Mother's Milk, they were making numerous TV appearances and were fairly popular. Essentially, John was just too much of a hipster to take pride in writing music that a lot of people were able to appreciate and connect with. Sad.
Well it seemed like they were pretty famous, at least, not discreet enough to justify resenting their popularity. It just sucks that he couldn't see it as, "Wow I make really good music that a lot of people enjoy" and just thought being popular was really bad.
Not really, they went from being a sideshow niche band to being the biggest band in the world. Back in the 20th century that actually meant something, not so much these days.
It’s the responsibility of maintaining something that big. He joined the band to play music, not to do anything else. When someone is that big, you have a lot more responsibilities that are not playing music. That’s just my guess tho, I don’t really know.
To me, is so amazing to see how ultra-lucid he is under the inffluence of narcotics. He is at a philosopher's level, at an ancient wise-men level. Its fucking crazy. And his music of that era is just nuts-good. The only thing that throws me and everybody off is the state of decadence of his body. Thats whats so off and makes me think that even though its his way, its a false way. It must be other way for geniuses to reach their potential.
my name is John Frusciante. I sat in my house for ten years and practiced guitar for about 15 hours everyday.. then joined the chili peppers.. quit the band, sat in my house for 6 years did some heroin, rejoined the chili peppers and went back to playing guitar for 15 hours everyday .. the end
He claims to be a good writer and said he might one day but as of now he can't remember the many stories he has perfectly. I read that somewhere in an interview I'm sure you can find it.
@@mikeabel7577 Lol. Holy shit, I thought the same but then again, 4 years old. A portuguese writer once said "It always worth while if your sould isn't small". Here's to you.
Behind The Lenses obviously you’ve never been there and i hope you or a loved when are never in this position. Def not a miracle but many don’t make it out. Rockstar, dumpster diver, doesn’t discriminate. One love ❤️
His life story is like some kind of Greek myth. A (let's face it, beautiful) man is born with virtuosic musical ability and finds success at a young age. Despite becoming increasingly self-confident, he is unable to cope with such sudden meteoric fame and retreats into his own little world of drugs and art. After five years of self-destruction, he is hanging onto the last threads of his life. But neither heroin nor fire can kill him, and he emerges reborn, a person who has been stripped down to his rawest elements and slowly rebuilt. His experience has made him realise what is truly important, his position on the cliff edge of death has made him value and appreciate life. He returns to the world a more humble and passionate person.
+ohwellwhateverr It is a story of finding Christ. He did not have Christ in his life before that is why he suffered. Now he has Christ. If you dont find Christ you are destined to live a life of complete hell. Do it before its too late
Kieth Richards is a great role model..lol. Drug use and drug abuse are not the same thing. Drugs are tools, and like any tool they can be misused at the discrepancy of the user.
Bujf vjg Injecting heroin and collapsing your veins is not a tool. Some drugs, maybe. But there is nothing good about ever using heroin especially intravenously
And after reaching this rock-bottom low, RHCP get him back into the band, and he helps produce their best and most popular material, until he leaves again. Thanks John.
Californication was a big disappointment, One Hot Minute was their last excellent album (and even different from the style they had on BSSM, which is still today their artistic peak) but fanboys att just wanted "John Back"and forgot how RHCP used to be (even with Navarro), they only need the (second) original lineup and fuck off the music and the legacy. it was an ugly and souless comercialization at the time and it aged horribly, it is one of the few records in my collection i regret buying.
Layne ,imo, was the greatest vocalist n songwriter EVER! Can't listen to Nutshell without crying.Until I got addicted to heroin in '94 I didn't even realize he was on drugs.I was so naive about drugs, heroin in particular. Clean 12 years now n heroin is the devil disguised as an angel promising you heaven.
chippchipp1 Heroine is doing strange things with you... I totally agree with the wtf statement :D He was totally fucked up at this time but i like it in a strange way :(
+anthony monaghan Bullshit. You're only making the Syd comparison because of the wisps of black hair draped over the eyes. Even at Syd's lowest musical moments he never came to close to sounding as drugged out and fucked up as THAT.
Carlos Sierra I suppose it's more like "John went to hell to lose five years of what he was capable of before that and desire death, and he came back with his face down, which is a miracle". No one should desire and go for such sound. It only causes hell and trouble, and it seems like hell isn't supportive, at all. I heard the sound and it was likely to destroy my life completely and effectively. I shouldn't have gone off the heavenly way i was going just to hear a sound (going to the tops of painful destruction). To think that it makes you experienced your life valuable... it's not nice. there's no basic reason to end your life and memory, coming back injured. It hurts. you lose your friends and have a hard and sad time trying to be in a world, or something. not to mention getting work together. Go home and think about it. So i wouldn't agree about the "victorious" part. (i'm not John and I don't know him personally, it's just what i felt and experienced, also had listened to some of his songs. People actually ask me that.) it still really was a problem, plenty of them. don't do that.
I totally disagree with this, John was making incredible music before his addiction. All I see here is a junky looking to justify his choices. Life is hard enough, you have to keep your shit wired to make it through and getting fucked up on heroin is the worst thing you can do. I’m glad John made it back, but I don’t think this period served him as anything more than a lesson in humility.
I'm with the Sierra-Dude on this one. Seen him live back in 03 and he had this glow of something pure on him. Guess he went somewhere else in the time of this interview at the cost of immense self-inflicted pain. Left a part of him whereever he went and came back with some knowledge of self and his music that only someone who truely suffered can have. But yeah, there's nothing glorious about addiction, it's only a symptom of lacking self-love anyways.
@Rob Sutherland You my son are a complete moron. If you read my comment you would've seen that I don't glorify him taking drugs. I just said, he went through a lot of pain with his addiction and overcame it. Dealing with pain adds depth to your beeing - wether it is because of loosing someone you love or something egotistical like addiction - because during addiction you're loosing yourself. If you had any knowledge of life you wouldn't have to talk so badly of him or junkies in general. You never know what pushes them into this self-abuse. Living means dealing with this kind of issues and overcoming them, which he did. Drugs can give you knowledge because they change the frame of your consciousness, so you can break through negative or stupid thought patterns. But there i'm not talking about addiction - especially heroin is a terrible addictive drug, which destroys the body and the mind. When I'm talking about something pure that he had then it was his decision to live because he was almost dead. That being said, eat a fat dick you ignorant sucker.
You can't even tell he's the same person. He looks like a ghost. And I'd point out him talking about how there is no good music around anymore, and just tell everyone to keep that in mind when they make the same statement. Every generation says the same thing, and then the later generations talk about how great the music was and how it's not any good anymore. There is still good music out there (and likely always will be), it just goes through periods of being mains stream and not, so you have to look for it a little harder.
the story he tells about 'ghosts on the record' at 3:50 is so heavy man. flea is such an amazing person, to realize that john was having psychotic episodes during that time and to protect him like that is really just incredible.
+Chris Meier It's a good thing that they're here for people to view. Especially alongside videos where the person involved is healthier or at least healthier looking. It is definitely best to stay away from hard drugs. Some you can start, but never fully escape. Best wishes.
thePraisedBry yeah ok man. I started doing heroin because all my idols made great music on it, thinking i would make great music and it ended up destroying my life and all my relationships. But yeah I guess this guy is a "pussy" for not wanting that.

just look at her name. it's clearly one of those people who believes River was little more than a lovable idiot incapable of making his own decisions & for that reason blames John for his death.
he looks so different. so unhealthy. It makes me so sad. when is shows him in 1991 and him in 1994 its so fucking crazy. And when he admits to being a junkie and the fact that he loves it... I just die a little bit.
That's because when you're a junkie you always lie, and try to justify your habit. You even lie about stupid shit that means nothing. Idk why but that's how it is. I was a heroin addict for about 4 years
@@rayjr62 like saying you don't think its a big deal that your friend died from a lethal dose of drugs you gave them? No way he really believes that unless he's a piece of garbage.
his talk about how he thinks seeing your own child grow and saying how people don't see how beautiful it is just speaks volumes to me. even though he's likely going through shit and not in a good state of mind he still holds those pure beliefs and think that reflects in his music immensely Edit- 8:10
What spoke volumes to me about that was that he couldn't see that people can fall in such a mental state that even your own child isn't enough to prevent yourself from doing something like that. If you are that deep, you can't see your surroundings anymore.
I've seen this video a lot in my suggestion box, but never clicked on it until now because I thought, "there is no way that is John." Wow, the guy went through a lot.
probably because he was trying to act crazier than he really was to become a living rock legend to impressionable kids...he kind of gives it away (no pun intended) when he's talking about how he thought cocaine was cool because of David Bowie, who also went crazy on drugs and which he thought was his coolest period. So, he was just playing that part when he got big enough for anyone to give a shit. Lots of bullshit in this video.
This interview is proof that people are just being pretentious when they talk about how “music sucks nowadays”. You can find those people in every single era of music. I just read an article about a musician from the 50s hearing the Stones and the Beatles and thinking they were complete garbage. If a person’s frame of reference is rooted in one place and someone comes along and doesn’t conform to it, they probably won’t like their art much. They have a pretense about music that doesn’t allow for the new thing.
People who want this video to be taken down obviously didn't watch it. It shows John's sincerest thoughts about life and death and drugs of course. Damn, there must've been a lot going through that head. Would've been nice to smoke up a joint and talk to him about all kinds of stuff.

It's really sad because a year before Layne died Frusciante really tried to reach out to him. And it's truly a tragedy. Layne was my favorite singer.
maybe why frusciante managed to turn his life around. though it seemed like it, frusciante was never at the point of no return. but stayley was.
+deez135 nuatz frusciante was never at the point of no return? haha
Dillon Leyva by definition no considering he returned
Goddamn, Frusciante escaped heavy drug addiction, Clapton escaped drugs and alcohol and he didn't get on the helicopter that would have killed him, Keith Richards escaped heavy drug addiction, Jimmy Page escaped his attempted murder, it's a miracle those three are alive and pretty well, imagine what would have been to lose those 4 gods in addiction to Hendrix, Vaughan, Duane Almann, George Harrison and others
I'd say John was very, very close to death here.
so sincere and heartly its hard to find junkies like john was
Dude was cool af wish more ppl were this cool he was in a dark yet light place
I just realized, when he says "getting kicked in the thigh by someone you look up to alters you" he might of been referring to the SNL Stone Cold Bush incident where Anthony kicked him. People claimed he cried backstage.
He's obviously high as shit if he's comparing Jane's Addiction to the likes of Da Vinci and Jimi Hendrix. lmao
RUclips ads ruin everything cool. Heck money ruins everything.
John looks like Leatherface's brother in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Damn. What a mess.
It's incredible how he got himself out of this and what he would eventually become.
So glad he's still alive
it really is some kind of a miracle he got out
+Frank Dux If he died then the comments will be filled with "such a wasted talent"
maybe because it would have been? he released some really great albums after this
new album in september
let's enjoy him
Guy needs to write an autobiography
my name is John Frusciante. I sat in my house for ten years and practiced guitar for about 15 hours everyday.. then joined the chili peppers.. quit the band, sat in my house for 6 years did some heroin, rejoined the chili peppers and went back to playing guitar for 15 hours everyday .. the end
Then I got into techno.
Hope you're doing well
He claims to be a good writer and said he might one day but as of now he can't remember the many stories he has perfectly. I read that somewhere in an interview I'm sure you can find it.
There's no need for an autobiography. This interview tells you everything you need to know.
He looks like a mixture between Roger Waters and Syd Barret.
Yoan Pantchev exactly my thoughts
Yeah😂
Wish you were here
Movie scripts and mathematics are one of John's strong points
LMAO
If there’s one guy I want to help me out with my fluid dynamics coursework, it’s 1994 John Frusciante
bigbowlowrong - Now that's a comment worth commenting on. Well done.
@@mikeabel7577 Lol. Holy shit, I thought the same but then again, 4 years old. A portuguese writer once said "It always worth while if your sould isn't small". Here's to you.

he looks like death. I'm happy that he is so much healthier looking.
His recovery is nothing short of miraculous
Psychedelics! Listen to his album The Empyrean if you haven't already. It becomes pretty clear the John found his light with help from these tools.
People do this everyday, it shouldn't be looked as this amazingly awesome thing.
Behind The Lenses obviously you’ve never been there and i hope you or a loved when are never in this position. Def not a miracle but many don’t make it out. Rockstar, dumpster diver, doesn’t discriminate. One love ❤️
@@mattypatty7161how ain’t it W miracle
Miracle implies beyond the realm of what’s possible, clearly it is possible to get out of the worst addictions. Psychedelics being the fastest route
Fuck he really was in a dark dark place.
That's were a lot of beauty comes from.
Doubt it. Took controlled heroine.
@@PSS521are you retarded?
I can't belive noone acknowledged this comment. you couldn't say it any better.
+ohwellwhateverr ok dis go hard
+ohwellwhateverr It is a story of finding Christ. He did not have Christ in his life before that is why he suffered. Now he has Christ. If you dont find Christ you are destined to live a life of complete hell. Do it before its too late
+Grimeyhoob i dont have christ but im fine
+Orion Ingram Give it time.....
I'm really glad we didn't lose this man. Chili Peppers definitely would not have been the same if he didn't get clean and came back.
does anyone know if the interviewer was able to sleep that night?
Michael Sandro Bertl 🤣🤣🤣
Michael Sandro Bertl what do that even mean
Michael Sandro Bertl . Yes , very well
Michael Sandro Bertl - How could you possibly know that? Why would you care?
lollllllllllllllll, terrible voice
John is proof that no matter how bad addiction Is anyone can overcome it
Yeah, no excuses.
Kieth Richards is a great role model..lol. Drug use and drug abuse are not the same thing. Drugs are tools, and like any tool they can be misused at the discrepancy of the user.
Hillel Slovak...
Bujf vjg
Injecting heroin and collapsing your veins is not a tool. Some drugs, maybe. But there is nothing good about ever using heroin especially intravenously
Andrew Gallagher amen to that
this was difficult to watch, one of my heroes battling addiction. Im so glad he had a great supporting network to get clean.
AtTheDriveBy he's not battling it, he's clearly having the best time.
AtTheDriveBy is this guy ltalain
But he looks great now
You shouldnt have heroes
Sunshiyyyyyyne
And after reaching this rock-bottom low, RHCP get him back into the band, and he helps produce their best and most popular material, until he leaves again. Thanks John.
this wasnt his lowest, a few years laters he was in a much worse condition
He still has his original teeth in this interview.....a 96-97 interview probably wouldve been him at his lowest point...
Californication was a big disappointment, One Hot Minute was their last excellent album (and even different from the style they had on BSSM, which is still today their artistic peak) but fanboys att just wanted "John Back"and forgot how RHCP used to be (even with Navarro), they only need the (second) original lineup and fuck off the music and the legacy.
it was an ugly and souless comercialization at the time and it aged horribly, it is one of the few records in my collection i regret buying.
reminds me of Tom from blink
I absolutelly disagree. Bssm was their best and Californication was second. One hot minute was vomit with possiblly 2 good songs if not less(1)
i wish Layne could have get rid off the drugs and make an epic turn back like John did. I can't stop thinking of Layne while watching this. :/
Leventunver Its crazy to think that john and bob forrest tried to help layne but he was so lost in his addiction.
Laynes vocals in 2018. I would cry.
Layne ,imo, was the greatest vocalist n songwriter EVER! Can't listen to Nutshell without crying.Until I got addicted to heroin in '94 I didn't even realize he was on drugs.I was so naive about drugs, heroin in particular. +chippchipp1 So, So Funny! lmao, Felt a bit guilty though
+anthony monaghan Bullshit. You're only making the Syd comparison because of the wisps of black hair draped over the eyes. Even at Syd's lowest musical moments he never came to close to sounding as drugged out and fucked up as THAT.
Meth, that's what it is
John went to hell to find a sound, and came back victorious.
People actually ask me that.)
it still really was a problem, plenty of them. don't do that.
I think he already had a great sound. Then went to hell. And then came back as fucking jesus lol.
There is still good music out there (and likely always will be), it just goes through periods of being mains stream and not, so you have to look for it a little harder.

his talk about how he thinks seeing your own child grow and saying how people don't see how beautiful it is just speaks volumes to me. even though he's likely going through shit and not in a good state of mind he still holds those pure beliefs and think that reflects in his music immensely
Edit- 8:10
What spoke volumes to me about that was that he couldn't see that people can fall in such a mental state that even your own child isn't enough to prevent yourself from doing something like that. If you are that deep, you can't see your surroundings anymore.
I've seen this video a lot in my suggestion box, but never clicked on it until now because I thought, "there is no way that is John."

I believe he used the Martin to record Niandra
And an out of tune one too..
And...please tell me his singing was a joke....it was ....right?
He's so fucking messed up here. Sad. I mean, look what he did at 9:11.

How did he come back from this!?
probably because he was trying to act crazier than he really was to become a living rock legend to impressionable kids...he kind of gives it away (no pun intended) when he's talking about how he thought cocaine was cool because of David Bowie, who also went crazy on drugs and which he thought was his coolest period. So, he was just playing that part when he got big enough for anyone to give a shit. Lots of bullshit in this video.
Atacama Humanoid you are blind
Breno Rissardo no, actually you just have really bad vision.
Sure, but it doesn't change the strong influence physically addicting drugs have on the body. And mind.
Giant Robot . Whatever
The interviewer was trying to save him
People who want this video to be taken down obviously didn't watch it. It shows John's sincerest thoughts about life and death and drugs of course. Damn, there must've been a lot going through that head. Would've been nice to smoke up a joint and talk to him about all kinds of stuff.
Then go smoke with the junkies at 7/11 tf
