Thanks for watching the video and thanks for the lively discussion. Here's a reminder: We're not CNN. This is an Entertainment podcast where we tell stories, discuss topics, offer opinions, make jokes where appropriate, speculate about possible theories, etc. It's meant to be entertaining! We're not the final word on these subjects. Now I’d like to address a few topics: 1) BOB FORREST: Forrest published a memoir where he makes the claim that both he and John Frusciante were at the Viper Room that night in 1993. He writes that Phoenix asked him for help, saying he was possibly experiencing the effects of a drug overdose. "I don’t think it’s an OD," Forrest told him. "You can stand and you can talk." He says he still harbors guilt to this day because he "dismissed his worries so casually.” 2) JOHN FRUSCIANTE: Okay, Frusciante was NOT kicked out of The Red Hot Chili Peppers. In the video, after one of us says that Frusciante quit, it's mentioned in passing that the feeling was probably mutual with his bandmates (that he was booted out, too). Dave Navarro is the one who actually got kicked out after playing on 'One Hot Minute.' But Frusciante did leave the band a couple of times due to his excessive drug use. 3) THE SPEEDBALL: Was it snorted or ingested as a beverage? Most media outlets skirt the issue of exactly how River Phoenix took the deadly speedball that night at the Viper Room. Usually, there’s a blanket statement like “he overdosed on cocaine and heroin.” In the video, I state that I don’t believe the drink theory. Really, what I was saying is that I don’t believe a random person handed him a cup and that he drank it so recklessly with no questions asked. The truth is the details surrounding this night are murky at best. I’ve heard both versions and I say both versions on the podcast. People have pointed out that there’s no way Phoenix could have snorted anything because his autopsy report states: “The nasal septum is intact. And without inflammation.” Does that mean it’s impossible? Not necessarily. In John Belushi’s autopsy report, it also states “the nasal septum is intact”...and he was definitely snorting a lot of coke during his last hours at The Chateau Marmont. 4) MY RESEARCH (or lack thereof): There are a lot of conflicting accounts of what went down that night. Some people say he had been clean for months before the fatal overdose. Others say he had been on a drug binge for several days. It goes back and forth, here and there. Below are just a few of the sources I came across: -NY TIMES: “Scott Carrier, a spokesman for the coroner's office, said that it was not known how Mr. Phoenix had taken the cocaine and morphine but that no needle marks had been found on his body.” -WASHINGTON POST: “An official familiar with the autopsy said that drugs were not found in the actor's stomach and that there were no signs of track marks on his body. ‘It looks like it was snorted,’ he said.” -THE GUARDIAN (The Untold Story of Lost Star River Phoenix): Samantha Mathis says “I knew he was high that night, but the heroin that killed him didn’t happen until he was in the Viper Room. I have my suspicions about what was going on, but I didn’t see anything.” -LAST NIGHT AT THE VIPER ROOM (Book by Gavin Edwards): He took a drink from a friend, someone he had twice taken to rehab, and gulped it down without asking what was in it. It was a liquid speedball. -GRUNGE (The Truth About River Phoenix’s Tragic Death): “According to the coroner, the drugs were not found in Phoenix's stomach, and there were no track marks found on his body. It was then surmised that the drugs were ingested by snorting.” -REEL REVIEWS (The Untimely Death of River Phoenix): “It was pure-grade Persian brown. Almost immediately after snorting the heroin, Phoenix would begin trembling and shaking violently.” -FINAL 24 Documentary (Discovery Channel): “[River’s] been shut out of the jam session, and disappointed, has just snorted a massive speeball.” -DARK SIDE OF THE 90s Documentary (Vice): “A lot of conflicting versions of what happened…Somebody walked up to the table and then gave him this cup and said, ‘Drink this. You’ll feel great!’ River downs it and almost immediately starts to feel like there’s something in the drink that’s starting to send his body into convulsions.” ____________________________ That’s all for now. I appreciate all the fact checking. We do follow-ups on all our podcast episodes to cover new developments, details we forgot AND stuff we got wrong. There’ll certainly be a lot to talk about on the River Phoenix Post Mortem! Peace, Alejandro
I didn't have any probIem with your presentation. I didn't think it was sIip=shod. The tragic fact is that he is gone, and he never got to deveIop as an actor Iike Penn and Cage and Depp did. At Ieast we have his performance in "My Own Private Idaho," which wouId have garnered him an Oscar nomination if it had been fiImed in today's Iess homophobic HoIIywood. He was aIso briIIiant as the young Indiana Jones.
I’ve always believed it was John Frusciante who gave River the drugs. Didn’t they also arrive together, meeting Joaquin, Rain, and Samantha at the club? In the end, I really can’t fault JF, I don’t believe he intentionally tried to kill River,…and let’s not forget, River took those drugs willingly. But this time they were just too much for his system to handle. So incredibly sad. Rest in eternal peace River.
If they say he was pretty much clean then and he took a dose he was usually used to within a period of his were he was heavily using that could be enough to overdose it’s a common occurrence tolerance goes down rapidly even after a really short period of abstinence and users relapse using the same dose as they were before this may of been the case with river either way so sad what a talented young man only 23 and already achieved so much R.I.P river phoenix
Yes I believe JF gave him alcohol with the H in it . After he found out River died and what he died from he was inconsolable. Why ? I believe it was because River was gone , and JF unknowingly gave River a drink with H. Who was bartending that night ? Johnny Depp Who had the most to gain from Rivers death ? Johnny Depp. I believe River didn’t trust Johnny. River knew Johnny was jealous of his career. If Johnny handed him a drink , I believe River would have never taken it. It was dark in the club, River never noticed who the bartender was. Johnny used JF as a go between. He handed JF a drink and said “ here give this to River on the house!” I believed it was laced with H. Coke and H don’t mix it’s a lethal combination. Johnny knew River had a habit of doing Coke.He had his friends deny him the opportunity to preform. River is upset , he goes to get coke, that along with H killed him. Coincidentally Johnny was on stage , no where near River when he died . Johnny started off the night bartending , ends the night on stage preforming. I’ve always wondered, what was Johnnys fascination with bartending? The club is filled with many of his friends and many pretty girl. Why would he choose to work at the bar, instead of enjoying the party? He had a reason behind this . Why switch to singing on stage. Because he needed an alibi, so he can say he wasn’t involved in Rivers death . 100s of people saw him on stage
@@bajorekjonHe got a pass because giving drugs to your drug taking friend isn't a crime. He didn't charge river or supply anyone else. He took the same thing River did. He was the same age River was. He has to live with this forever. He accidentally killed his best friend. He got his punishment. If you don't think so go check out his 1 1994 interview.
Who said that Bob Forrest hated Frusciante...LOL...Bob helped him to recovery and after that, when John was clean and stay sober (until today!!!) they both went to see Layne Staley's condo, who unfortunately didn't want to see anyone. But John seemed to have the last hope plus an out-of-the-box example that Layne could be healed too... Unfortunately, Layne didn't want to. I only wrote this because I think Jf is a good person with a really nice spirit. Rest In Peace all of them (here and now first is River Phoenix)
His solo music illustrates his gratitude for being given a second chance. Some of the most exquisite songs I've ever heard. I swear it sounds like God sings through him sometimes.
Who is this dude saying John Frusciante was not a big coke guy? He is incorrect. Yes he's known as a heroin guy but he was big into both, and kept using cocaine for quite a while after quitting heroin.
Problem is with 8x the lethal amount... An addict using daily could handle 8-10x that of someone clean. So snorting all day. You might only need a 0.1 to send you over when ingested. Tolerance based 8x lethal or 8 x what your heart could handle.
Johnny Depp had him killed because he was insecure with River making a movie with Johnny’s then gf, winona ryder. I think JD also saw River as competition as well. two young pretty boys. One was jealous, and insecure. the other one was too trusting, and maybe a bit naive. Anyway, when he got to the VR he was greeted with a drink that was loaded with the hot dose. That’s the story I’ve heard that make most sense to me.
@@cb-tz8og That story doesn’t make sense at all. JD murdered him because he was jealous? Ridiculous. The one that sounds most likely is it was John Frusciante, who was a hardcore heroin and coke addict at the time, and was well on the path to dying himself before he got clean, gave him the dose, but didn’t mean to harm him, it was just a bad junkie mistake. River Phoenix took heroin and coke since filming My Own Private Idaho in 1990, and he was drug friends with Frusciante - they’re both facts, his friends admit them. River had periods of abstinence though, so his tolerance to drugs wasn’t as high as Frusciante, who took them every day. He’d been filming in Utah and away from drugs for weeks, so when he came back to LA, his body wasn’t prepared for high doses like that.
Yeah I thought that. Joaquin, Rain, Liberty and Summer all look a like. And they get their looks from John. River looked COMPLETELY different to all of them.
River's father blamed John "for being such a pusher", as if River, as an adult, didn't have a say on whether to take drugs or not. However he didn't seem to blame himself and his wife for subjecting their children to a cult... the nerve of that man! River as the eldest of them all surely was the one who suffered the most and this may have triggered off a lot of problems in his adult life.
Ctbs. It was laced. He chugged it because he thought it was a regular drink. Nobody knew he did drugs that night, including him. John gave him a hot shot on purpose
@@standinsilenceI mean yes technically he was an adult, but looking back at when I was 23 didn’t take me much to influence me to do something, cause it’s still important to “be cool” at that age. I mean looking back, I basically acted like a teenager
There’s so much guilt surrounding River’s death. Everyone from Frusciante, Samantha Mathis, Joaquin Phoenix to Johnny Depp blames themselves for it. River got deeply, deeply unlucky that night, but he sort of chose his own luck by hanging out with some junkie friends to begin with. Addiction always starts with friends and the environment, perhaps if River had a healthier upbringing and better parents, he would’ve been resilient enough not to hang out with some crazy junkies, and spiral into addiction himself in the first place. Also he was overworked, someone should have seriously sent him to rehab or therapy instead of letting him do more movies. River was a poor, tortured soul, and his overdose was a disaster waiting to happen. It’s just crazy that no one near him, personally or professionally, made an intervention and guided him in the right path. He was abused by the people near him as well it seems. River wanted to quit acting, but kept working so his family had enough money, and to satisfy his junkie friends, I presume. It’s just crazy that so many people knew about his mental instability, addiction, recalled him acting super high and strange on set, and nobody ever did anything. Everyone payed a cost, and that ultimate cost was River's life. People threw his soul into the abyss and left it there. May his eternal soul rest in peace.
@@winzt9 He literally has a drinking problem and dated an abuser/ was an abuser himself?? How is he "fine"??? Fair enough he never overdosed or anything presumably, but he definitely isn't doing great either.
Dude river was the junkie friend. He was doing hard drugs years before john frusciante. John only started taking hard drugs after the success of blood sugar sex magik
Frusciante was absolutely a coke guy...yes he got deep into Heroin addiction but John has spoken at length about doing Cocaine...smoking Crack and doing soeedballs...(which as noted is Coke and Heroin). So not sure where youre getting your info from but go watch some interviews with Frusciante and you will hear it from his own mouth that he used Cocaine regularly
@@mikesperko3921 no. What are you talking about man? Speedball is specifically blow and heroin. Some people do shots of meth and heroin and call that a speedball or a "goofball" but what you said isn't true at all anywhere. I don't know where you heard that Maybe you're thinking it could be any opiate + coke, not specifically heroin + coke. I could see that, but not a benzo and coke
So I finally decided to delve into this incident. First and foremost, I do not believe an experienced drug addict would give a good friend a drink mixing lethal doses of heroin and cocaine to consume. Not only is it a waste of drugs, it's absolutely insane. John was not insane, he was depressed and addicted, and not stupid either. John gave Rivers the cup, but I don't believe John created that death cocktail for Phoenix. There is just no way an experienced drug addict would waste drugs and put their friends life in jeopardy without ever having a history of doing it to anyone else. Sure, it could have been a serious lapse in judgement, but John wasn't nearly that stupid. There is more I can say, but I'll stop there. I don't think John ultimately made the lethal concoction. At worst he wanted to give him a drink, and it became something else.
You people are absolutely delusional. First of all addicts can be some of the worst people you can meet. Especially if they're high. You keep spewing this BS of love and what not but go ask a group of addicts if they're friends. In this world people are absolutely evil and hateful. Be it jealously, envy, hate, resentment etc. Does a friend give another friend drugs? Does a friend give another friend who has been clean drugs to relapse? All it takes is for an addict to see an ex user "friend" living right and clean to feel some type of way. Crabs in the bucket mentality. Also, addicts who are in groups don't give a damn about wasting drugs especially when theyre dealing with people with money. No one is worried about wasting a bit on a cup. All it takes is a small amount to overdose anyways.
Do you think maybe John was just giving river the same dose as himself? Not taking into account that rivers tolerance would be so low? Also they were rich, so the greedy/scared of waste side of addiction doesn't exist. They all had access to surplus drugs, so no one had to worry about waste or running out the same way a regular addict might. I wrack my brain regularly over this case. John Frusciante loved River. River loved John. All I can think is that it was truly just a fucked up misjudgement resulting in death. Imagine giving your friend the dose that kills them. Doesn't matter how accidental it was, you'd feel responsible. John sure did spiral afterwards. And in the 90s in L.A everyone took coke/heroin or speed/heroin combos. It was a normal thing unfortunately for users to do both. It's responsible for a lot of deaths due to one slowing your cardio/respiratory down and one viciously speeding it up. Seems ridiculous but it was the thing back then.
@@winzt9river was financing John’s drug habit at that time so I don’t see a motive for killing him. Quite the opposite. Also, john apparently drank some of the same drink and got sick himself that night. John likely handed river the drink, but not likely he prepared it.
Even if John did give him the lethal dose, it was River’s choice to take it or hang out with John in the first place. John was at ground zero, completely wrecked and so was Phoenix at the time it seems. You can’t blame anyone in this scenario. If not John it would have been someone else. Clearly River was not in a good place mentally.
@@rrrrrrachat can only come from a person with zero life experience and someone who doesn't understand addicts or the human mind in general. Hanging out with severe addicts is the biggest red flag and many die all over the world pretty much everyday because of it. Even the law doesn't hold the person fully guilty. Get educated and grow up. You might save someone's life with this advice.
@@rishabhaniket1952 don’t worry i know what i’m talking about dumbass, saying that « if not john it would have been someone else » is pure bullshit and ik what i’m talking about
They didn't even want to close the nightclub to investigate , it was JD who did this for 2 weeks and then fled to France....the VIP after JD's management had 2 more overdoses, an Australian musician Donovan and Courtney Love....who survived. I think Netflix could make a documentary about this and how the absence of medical help was salvation for these two, but death for River. JD claimed he didn't have a phone so he couldn't call 911 but everyone knew that there was a telephone in the office to communicate with dealers and businesspeople The phone disappeared in the meantime, did it? 😊 Because that would lead to the arrest of everyone there, lack of assistance and drug traffickers. 😊
Easily the most overrated guitar player in history. He is a pretty face. His edge and good looks are why he was in that band. If he was 50 pounds heavier you never would have heard of him. He literally can’t solo at all. He just does simple hammer ons on the pentatonic scale and makes faces for the crowd. I’m a professional jazz musician, trust me, Frusciante is not even an intermediate level player. Anthony is the band. Fleas style is obviously very important to the sound they developed, but even he would have been replaceable. Frusciante couldn’t have passed an audition for my high school jazz band. That’s no exaggeration. I’m glad he got his shit together somewhat, but after having Klinghoffer thrown out because he was broke again, fuck that guy.
I heard from sources close to River including the drummer to rivers band that John gave River the “speed ball”, apparently it was given to River in a shot glass and passed to River from John who told him to drink it. River apparently drank it assuming it was alcohol because after he downed the drink in one go River apparently uttered the words “what the hell was that”. This changes the story completely as people assumed even if John gave him the lethal drugs, River was some how in the wrong for willingly taking drugs. Yet if this story is correct we know that River thought he was taking an alcoholic beverage from a “friend.” Rivers autopsy also showed that Rivers body was clean and the only drug was the speedball that was so potent and powerful it hadn’t digested through his body! So regardless of this idea that River was a “drug addict” as people assumed he dabbled during the filming my own private Idaho. Wether this is true or not is irrelevant to what River was when he died, which was that of a young man who was drug free at the time of his death. This certainly doesn’t fit the narrative that River went to take drugs or was a regular drug user. Apparently according to Rivers close friends (not including the RHCP) he was very clean living and only smoked pot on occasion (which it’s kinda normal as a guy in California)! Not only do I strongly believe that River was unaware of what he was given but, I have heard from close sources that John did purposefully kill River. In fact a director close to River was making a documentary, this involved some of Rivers close friends, where he was gonna expose Rivers Mother and John. I actually got to see parts of this documentary but sadly the director died before he could finish it. But apparently some of the people close to River warned him not to hang out with RHCP as they were heavy users and John had bad intentions. John apparently couldn’t stand River to the point where he seemed bitter with jealousy. According to the drummer from Rivers band John had it out for River because River planned an intervention for John and put John in rehab against his will, and even threatened River that he would kill him! Now on the night River died, the speed ball that John had given to River was so powerful that it could kill you ten times over, it would knock out an elephant. Plus with Johns drug experience and knowing River wasn’t a heavy drug user gave him a potent drug that looked like an alcoholic beverage. John knew that if he showed River obvious drugs he’d turn them down so he masked them in a drink. Also apparently John only passed River a drink, why didn’t he offer the others a speed ball, well because it was obviously only intended for River. These actions seemed to show that this was premeditated. I’m not saying that John would do the same now, because John was in a very dark place at the time with his drug use and I think this clouded his judgment to act on his hate. I believe River represented someone who had more control over his life and John wished he could have that, so he decided to destroy it out of impulse. I could say he probably regretted it as apparently this director who was friends with River went to the funeral and John was so scared to go that he hid. But also Rivers dad wanted to kill John, now why would Rivers dad want to kill John if he was innocent. Apparently this is what caused Rivers father and mother to fight as Rivers mother didn’t want to press charges and apparently the Phoenix’s shared the same lawyer as RHCP. This is why the director hated Rivers mother, he says that she pimped her children out and she fed River to the wolfs. But he also states that she was a strange woman who didn’t defend River by not pressing charges and she let river get SA in the children of god. Not only this but that night at the viper room they changed their story’s to cops and when River was telling them he was ODing they didn’t want to phone a ambulance or they get into trouble. It took River convulsing on the pavement for his brother to finally phone for an ambulance but by then it was too late! I know if that was anyone of them that night River would have called for an ambulance straight away. In fact paramedics said that he could have lived if the ambulance was called earlier! I just think it’s sad how River saw John as his friend naively taking a drink from him, because River truly didn’t have any reason to believe John would hurt him. It was apparently a problem with Rivers personally, to the point where one of his friends talked about how he would let strangers live with him who needed a place to stay. I think it just shows you how kind hearted he was. But this is my opinion.
I’m sorry but you don’t drink speed balls. Speed balls are a combination of heroin and cocaine….usually injected sometimes snorted but there is no addict in the world who would ever fucking put it in liquid. It would not have the same effect. That’s science. You would have to mix it in water and putting the other two things with water would ruin them unless you injected it. You may be right about some other parts but just accept he made his own decision to take drugs.
Interesting take. Didn't Johnny Depp finally get Frusciante clean? So I guess he accepted help after all. If this rings true, I wonder how Flea holds no grudges against Frusciante, since he seemed to deeply care about River. Speaking of Flea, was he also into heavy drugs? Always seemed more of an acid/pothead to me. Could River's autopsy clearly state that nothing was snorted or smoked? His convulsions at the Viper room indicate a strong cocaine overdose. He had no tolerance from filming Dark Blood clean in Utah. Everyone who witnessed River doing drugs said, he always took too much, including Martha Plimpton.
I copy and paste my post: That he would collapse and die immediately after receiving that drink cannot be true. First of all, both heroin and cocaine are very bad and take orally, bioavailability I think is 10% on heroin and around 20% on cocaine. So, to make it easy, if you take 1 gram of heroin intravenously, the bioavailability is 100%, then you get 1 gram, but if you take it orally, you get 10% of 1 gram, so 0.1 gram. If you sniff it, you get 40-50% and smoke it 70-80%. Cocaine bioavailability is 80% if you sniff it but orally 20%. So drinking it is pure waste and you don't get a kick because it takes longer to get it into the blood. So for River to have drunk it and feel it right away doesn't make sense, at least 15 minutes before he would start feeling any of it and then at least another 30 minutes before it reaches its full effect, wouldn't surprise me for an hour. I've never heard of anyone drinking heroin. Most people who die with heroin in their bodies are because they have mixed it with alcohol or mixed it with Benzodiazepines and you can get respiratory depression. Valium (diazepam) is one of the slightly weaker benzodiazepines. Never start drugs, even if you don't die outright, it kills you slowly on the inside. I am a mixed addict and am addicted to heroin and diazepam and today I also took Amphetamine, so almost the same as what River took that day. RIP
Ill never forget that day as my friends and i were at a house party getting dressed in our Halloween costumes to go to a Halloween party. A couple of us had just took some excatasy pills and were watching the news about River Phoenix. I was recreational drug user but was totally freaked out bcuz it was my first time doing X. It was really somber but we were so young and after we went on to party but really nervous.
I can't believe I've never knew so many of these things. I had no idea about the actual details about River not being able to play that night, about John possibly giving him the drugs, and I had NO IDEA Johnny Depp filmed that infamous video of John looking insane and on death's door. This is crazy. Wow.
@@roddydykes7053 The interview was just Dutch interviewers. The video that Johnny Depp got a producer credit on was the video "Stuff." Gibby Hanes was who actually shot the video though.

Maybe the authorities were bought like to shut up...I believe River's death was a ritualistic sacrifice...I don't believe it was a coincidence that he died on Halloween's night...don't forget Hollywood is based on the Occult. The same thing happened to Brandon Lee who died earlier that year...

It's a crazy story. The night Leonardo DiCaprio who was a relatively unknown at the time saw River at a party earlier and wanted to introduce himself but River vanished. If River would had played on stage that night he certainly wouldn't have taken that specific drug at that time(possible he takes it later but maybe not) Worst of all - Joaquin was really adamant about getting 911 involved afraid of his brother would end up in the news and they waited to long to call while he brother was convulsing on the sidewalk. From what I understand if they called earlier and the ambulance knew it was a speedball he could have been saved in the ambulance (i think they have some kind of shot for that)
@@robertsesmamusic Relatively unknown, i didn't mean he was a bus boy or something. At that time he had a role in Growning Pains and had a role in Boys Life which did not do much commercially. This was before Gilbert Grape......River probably had no clue who he was which is why Leo was trying to meet him.
You know that’s hard for his brother to live with, he knows that deep down, he also made the comment that if him and his sister would’ve never wanted to go that night to the Viper it may not have happened. I know he struggles with a lot of guilt I’m sure, they asked river for an escort So they could go that night
It's not a smart move to give someone a benzo if thy just took heroin or cocaine. I made that mistake once and almost died. I took a Klonopin like 10 minutes after I shot heroin...thank God I was rushed to the hospital.🙏🏻 I feel bad for river, but I did read rumour back in the day that John did give river a bad piece of heroin or coke. 🤷🏻. I don't know. I doesn't matter now. I miss river.
@@OtoMagaldadze Yeah, you could still function while high on heroin. Unless you're absolutely blitzed out of your skull....nodding in & out consciousness. The worst thing you can do on heroin is mix it with other drugs, especially benzos (Xanax, Klonopins, Valium) because it'll kill you.
Yes you can absolutely play guitar and talk meaningfully on heroin specially if you have a tolerance. If your new to the drug or take too much you may nod out but many of the best musicians ever experimented with H
You just can’t hang out with a completely down and out junkie and expect good consequences. John at the time was pretty wrecked and infamous around Hollywood, almost living like a ghost. The fact that River chose to hang out with him shows he was not in a good place and was pretty vulnerable himself.
If he had 8x the lethal dose of cocaine in his system, a benzo might have actually helped slow his heart down a bit and prevent the seizure that ultimately took River's life. Problem is... once the coke wore off the benzo would only make his condition worse since he also snorted heroin. He needed medical attention ASAP.
apparently samantha mathis talked and said someone did give him a drink wiith the toxic cocktail and thats when he started getting sick. apparently christina applegate knows some things but isnt talking. also william richert the producer and bff to river says he knows for a fact fruciante gave him the drink. coroner report states nothing was found in nasal passages or resp tract and no needle marks, and there was 200cc dark fluid in his stomach. john fruciante's father was a big time LA judge and they had the same attorney as the pheonix family. john phoenix said if he ever saw fruciante he would kill him. john fruciante needs to rot in hell total waste of oxygen.
The comments in this clip are despicable, to say the least. Frusciante happened to be one of River's closest friends at the time, and yeah, he was a hard-core junkie. Junkies happen to share the stuff they use, that's a fact, and both of them used to do heroine and cocaine at the time. River's death was an unfortunate accident and you should show more respect for a deceased young man. I mean, that's not a laughable matter!
You’re listening to a snippet of a podcast that covered the entirety of his life and career which happens to be a true crime comedy podcast. Nobody is laughing at his death, rather pondering what actually happened that fateful night.
Two years ago I was in Los Angeles, never care about to this place, but I walked to the door just to look where that kid die and I am not even his or Depp fan ! You can marketing disgrace !
Everyone seemed to be using back then. I know it made my group of friends slow down. No one quit back then but the amount used did decrease dramatically for a while. We thought we were invincible, thank God the majority of us grew up.
I grew up with John as a kid. We had the same home room at Chatsworth High. We would check in then leave, stop by Numero Uno before heading to his house at 10000 Independence St off of Lasson I was the one John first smoked weed with and first person that he did LSD with, we were only 14 and I'm not proud of that. We were "Blazing" on LSD and he said "I want to try every drug one time". I haven't talked to John since "Mother's Milk". I was told from a friend that John met River at the hotel River was staying at before heading to the Viper Room. Now, knowing John I know he's very hyper sensitive. We went to a friend's wedding (Kerry was his name) and John broke into tears. After River passed John walk off stage while the Chili Peppers were performing which sounds like something he would do. I really don't know, but I thought I would add my perspective
If you want to hear the greatest guitar solo John ever did listen to "Scar Tissue" that's totally John mourning the death of River, I know it. He talks through his guitar. I bought "Iron Maiden's Powerslave" album, played side A and side B, John turned it over and played both sides every not missing a note. Also, John doesn't drive a car... He never has. So I'm assuming in the video they have there car on a trailer when they shoot John driving
Another theory: John F. unknowingly delivered a toxic drink that someone (behind the bar?) told him to bring over to River. As The Viper Room was junkie heaven, John would have been the ideal scapegoat because River trusted him. Everyone knew Johnny Depp was jealous of River which gave him a motive to orchestrate this in his "absence". Depp somehow escaped public suspicion over the "disappearance" of his Viper Room partner Anthony Fox who was about to expose Depp for laundering millions of dollars in illegal funds...in-house gambling, etc..all they found was his vehicle. The Depp rabbit hole runs deep. Some of the biggest entertainment stars of their generation were linked to highly illegal activity that went on after hours in The Viper Room.
Another theory: John F. unknowingly delivered a toxic drink that someone (behind the bar?) told him to bring over to River. I would have loved to take acid with John, that’s legendary, but saying I want to try every drug one time and not, I want to try every psychedelic sounds like a bad addiction waiting game to happen, and it did. Glad he seems okay.
@@gidgehenderson2614 Not a throry at all...John has talked about his coke and crack use in many interviews. He has said numerous times..."All I did was sit on my couch and do speedballs for 5 years" a 5 minute interview search will lead you to these interviews...its not some big secret
That's why I don't take drinks from anyone. Friends or family or anyone when I'm out partying. I think River Phoenix was murdered whether accident or intentional it seems like murder.
@@DeathInEntertainment Time before so much technology were people could hone their gifts and talents more not be so distracted with so many devices lol
A lot of people here are mixing "Stuff" filmed by Depp and Gibby Haynes, with the infamous 94 Dutch interview, which has nothing to do with that, since the latter is just an interview for a Dutch magazine. The idea that Depp shot that short film in order to save John from prison is just ridiculous, and what's even more ridiculous is to think that John was faking anything in any of these pieces. He only appears briefly in Stuff, I mean, it's just a few seconds and even there you can see his decline as a person, but please... go watch the Dutch interview and tell me John is playing a role there.... gosh! Then we should take away every Oscar from every consacrated actor out there and give them to him, as he would surely be the most perfect actor that ever existed!! The nerve of some people!!
I wonder if that's why 8 times the amount was given to him because he was going to drink it and autopsy stated there were drugs only present in his digestion track and nowhere else, so he was possibly clean before that concoction? He wasn't allowed to play with the rest of his friends on stage otherwise he wouldn't have been given that? I'm no expert, I just don't believe John from RHCP knew it was lethal, and people were probably afraid to speak out after River passed away. I believe someone knows something, if they were all addicts then I believe they all knew that the amount was intentional. 8 grams each, I assume that's a pretty nice sized pile, I am retired nurse and my husband (who speaks from personal experience, now sober) said that would be a hefty pile, and that any experienced person would definitely know that) but once it dissolved, the only way you can tell would be drinking it, due to an absolute horrible gagging taste and mouth started getting numb.) What do you guys think, I could be way off track, I'm just going by what I've found researching this awful tragedy, also to note that he died on the early hours of Halloween day with him "arriving at VR at aprox 12:30 and 911 wasn't called until several hours later"? LA is called the city of angels for a reason. I paid my respects at VR in Oct '97, that city gave me a uneasy, tense feeling when I was there a couple times.
Great comment. He was definitely murdered in a controlled environment. John was in throes of serious addiction at that time. He was his friend at the time, after all. @@LisaSheldon-k3c
People definitely snort heroin and coke at the same time. It's definitely doesn't have the same immediate rush effect, but it will get you high all the same.
Exactly 💯, my father passed away when I was 12 from a speedball. I'm am 40 plus now and back then as a kid I new more about drugs then these idiots on this post!!! I'm with you in 40 plus years of living this drink thing is completely bs. That is not how a speedball works. It's not a brink dumb ass's. Show's how stupid the word is sitting in there ivory tower's
I have heard that John was directly involved. Frusciante was there to play some songs from his solo album. River at the time was living with Frusciante and even wrote a few songs off A Smile From the Streets You Hold. At that time they both heavily involved in drugs and I think that when River saw John he probably told him he wasn’t going on and needed some drugs to cope. That’s half of the story I heard.
John frusciante probably did give river some of the drug's that night, but not all of them...I've heard witnesses saw more than one person in that restroom with River. John himself threw up on stage after singing just one song "life's a bath" so it gives you an idea, the atmosphere of the viper room that night. River was still an adult..a very young one...but he just made an extremely crucial and fatal mistake that costed him his life...John would've NEVER let that happen had he known what was going to happen. John nearly died more than once ALL because of this incident, and very much struggles through it now. This wasn't just anyone...this was Hollywood's golden child a multitaltanted individual. Who is still missed and always will be...
@@DeathInEntertainment Absolutely. Just think about what level of talent River was on. Leo who would wind up taking most of river's future roles did as good of a job anyone can possibly do, yet I know River would've had still done a better job somehow as they we're meant for him.
@@timetheory84 You've contradicted yourself, you said the only movie Leo ever took was...as if it was just once....yet, you repeated multiple films that River was offered, the same one's I was mentioning thus, proving my point. I'm not really speaking about or even comparing the kind of actor they both we're, I know they we're different plus we'll never know if River would had done those films or not I read he was very interested in most but he passed beforehand....ugh, internet nerd's...I hope you're not this bad at speaking to ladies in person.
@@timetheory84 Plus, Michel improveli was like almost 30 in basketball diaries, he played Leo's freind with cancer as we're lot of the other actors in it , most weren't teenager's, so I doubt River would had passed up that film. The soundtrack was loaded with musicians very similar to his own. That role was perfect for him. More so than Leo.
@@timetheory84 We'll, I wasn't here to say Leo took all his roles with bad intentions, that's just what happened after he passed but you're making it seem like it. And if you already know who I'm speaking of sorry I misspelled his last name. I just heard differently, from like different places, plus river loved the book that's what I was saying. I know it's all based on that guy's life. Yeah. I know all that. Like i said they we're already older men playing teenagers, in that movie, so I don't think river or the director would has passed him up based on his age at the time. River could've definitely still passed for an 18 year old had he wanted to anyways.
There is so much sensational speculation in this you cannot possibly take it serious. 'he got rejected and went into the crowd in search for drugs' how the hell would you know what moved him.
Not heroin. Oral ingestion has the absolute lowest bioavailability than any other route of ingestion. Plus it's extremely bitter. You would know if it's in a drink lol.
@@ronnie6696 lol, nah... There's absolutely no way you could drink the entire drink fast enough to not notice the bitter taste until after finishing it. That's like saying if you chugged a glass full of piss fast enough, you wouldn't notice the taste until after; it's a completely asinine assertion to make 🤣 The reason I am able to confidently state this, is because I unfortunately have quite a bit of experience with the drug, so I most definitely am familiar with it's smell and taste, and it is seriously unpleasant and disgusting. The bitterness is so intense, the second that fluid touched your lips and tongue, you would immediately react and it most likely would activate your gag reflex. Regardless, I already mentioned as well, that ingesting heroin by eating it, has the absolute lowest bioavailability by a long shot than any other route of administration, so the amount of the drug that would be required to mix in with the drink to have ANY chance of lethality, would be 100% noticable, and that is a fact.
@@FilthTribeFTP um no. Piss has an odor and that's totally different from what I'm saying. After he chugged it he knew something was wrong so again read the reports. He said wth is this you gave me. Clearly he had no idea that he was being laced with heroin and coke
I always thought it was heroin (speedball). He was 23! You can do ALL the drugs in the 90s and not be up and down ( fentanyl wasn’t here yet), he mixed an upper with a downer (speedball) and it was cya later time.
Every man is responsible for his own choices. The idea that he took a “heroin laced drink” and wasn’t in fact snorting heroin knowingly is absurd. All these guys were fucked on drugs and River took too many.
I'm a recovering addict, when I was actively using if I had overdosed it would have been on me. No one ever held a gun to my head or forced me to do anything. Give it a rest., River was a big boy
@@DeathInEntertainment the questions and answers have not changed in 30 years. There are as many stories about how he spent the evening, before he got to the Viper Room. As there are about how he ingested it. Did he snort it, drink it or shoot it? Did he begin the evening at the hotel with his family, alone with his girlfriend or shooting up at John Frusciantes house? No matter who, what, when, where or why, the end result is the same. It was no more murder than it was suicide. It was a very tragic accidental overdose.
@@DeathInEntertainment Go back and watch. Someone said he was more heroin than coke guy. He was almost always a coke guy. He just did heroin. That was not true. He did heroin. Most of the time he did it doing speed balls. However, what killed Phoenix was the drink "someone" have him.
Let me draw your attention to Johnny Depp and Gibby Haynes: They were best friends, they were inseperable, spotted in photographs together all over the world,Gibby was an extra in Depps movie " Dead Man"......immediately after Rivers death, no more freindship. Wynona Ryder and River were rumored to be in an upcoming movie and excited about it. My source is 100% I am from Atx. It was the 2 mentioned that conspired to have River leave. And the concoction was handed to him by the tallest person in the room. 100
River's BFF at that time was Keanu Reeves. Somehow, his name is OFTEN eliminated from the historical recounting of that night. Reeves could never hold a candle to River's acting talents. River being deep and Reeves being hollow and wooden. Also, look at the way Reeves' career catapulted after the deaths of his stillborn daughter and the mother a year later.
Viper club 1993. like asking who was speeding at a grand Prix. But hehe, that makes sense, I didn't know John was there. I'd kinda not wanna be taking drugs from John at that stage, Heroin doesn't take long to build a tolerance to, John said he was overdosing on speedballs just to feel any effect, but towards the end, like '96 or so. Heroin is the vomit drug. Judy? damn, she was outstanding in 'Passage to India'.
So, the person that handed him the valium didn't know that he took the other two drugs prior to this and the combination killed him? So, if he wasn't handed the valium, he would still be alive today?
😢This later led to a major drug operation in Argentina...and also to the LA police corruption scandal...but we have to wait at least 50 years for these documents to be available.
Johnny Depp filmed that movie at John Frusciante house prior to River Phoenix overdose, he filmed the movie to show the bad living conditions that Frusciante was living in. You gotta love crazy gossip and rumors.
If people think Frusciante spiked his cup or whatever or was unaware of dosage then you don't know anything about him obviously because back then he was a terrible heroin addict. Anyone in that scene could have given Phoenix something or maybe he just drank more than he usually did, or unknowingly. Who the f does speedballs anyway.
Look. As far as the allegation John gave river the cup and said ''drink this'' and River drank it thinking it was just alcohol is invalid. River said, quoted by his own brother ''I took too much''. Meaning, he knew he took something. Case closed on that. However, it is very possible he got it from Frusciante. I've frequented the viper for years. Its never hard to find drugs in Hollywood, but you often go to those who you know, especially if you're a celebrity. I think it's highly likely he got it from John knowingly, but didn't know how strong it was. John was near death his habit was so bad and drugs so extreme in purity. Or he may have not known it was a speedball. Lots of doctors like to say this and that about how much could ''kill a horse''. But they've never partied with rockstars who do the drugs for years straight. The tolerance can be through the roof. I will mention one thing though, as a life long fan and researcher of the band, Bob Forest is one of Anthony and fleas best friend from childhood, they even wrote songs about him. So I'd take what he says as most likely true. With that being said-great job on the video, this is all actual documented theories. Too much clickbait and bs on the internet these days.
Frusciante left the chili peppers in 1992, a year before the death of river phoenix and he left the barn behind completely and didn't speak to them until like 1998
Hello, the autopsy report is pretty clear about this. not the slightest trace of lesions in the nose. So Bob Forrest seems to be a complete mythomaniac in need of attention and the theory of speedball ingested in the form of a drink is the most plausible. Otherwise, just talking, Rodney Harvey would be a good subject for a show.
Bob Forest was ALWAYS known to be an overreacting drama queen who loved to instigate and spread rumors about people that were either partially true, or just completely full of shit.
All you had to do was read the autopsy report to know he did not snort or inject anything that night. Samantha Mathis also witnessed “the drink” incident- he was totally dosed by Frusciante
I read a lot that points in JF direction. Not to mention JD covered it all up. Bob F is a POS but then again they all are. River was clean for the period of his last film and with the stress of what happened during the filming with the other actor and then coming back into a town where drugs are everywhere. You get a little antsy. I blame all the above and Rivers siblings.
Why would you blame rivers siblings? What do you mean? I guess you’re meeting for not calling 911 soon enough. They just wanted to go to the club that night, they had no idea what was gonna happen, not sure why you blame them other than not making the call quick enough, but who would’ve known? I think they were all in shock, But they still should’ve called sooner,, for sure.
Can not blame anyone here, the siblings were themselves confused teens for whom River was a God like figure and John was a completely wrecked junkie who himself must have been a drug haze 24 7. The adults around him and his parents are the only ones fingers can be pointed at.
Idk even if he did give him the drugs you expect him to know his limits and not go overboard. I'm aware drugs are bad but when your in that life you can't blame the guy that gave it to him use at your own risk type of thing. Coke and H are already the most hard-core drugs available one bad enough mixing is just reckless and low key suicidal. Either way I feel for all the people lost to those substances they are the devil

All you have to do is look at the people that benefit it from his death. Johnny Depp, Christian Slater, Leonardo DiCaprio, Toby Maguire. They were all there, and probably had a hand in what happened. If River Phoenix had not have died, He would have become a much bigger movie star than all of those guys.
I personally believe that it absolutely involved, whom I adore- John. It sucks...but he has been troubled deeply by it, and got on heroin(I believe)to "pay the price", to not feel guilty and shame. And I don't believe John was trying to hurt him. Terrible. So sad, for both of them. 😢

I think its very possible. In drug circles you all just enable eachother and are so fixated on your own addiction that you don't give a shit! People say that's part of what drove John crazy, and it is well supported that Johnny Depp did film that video as an insanity plea, but the phoenix fam didn't press charges! Fucking crazy.
Still don't know wth happened to Depp's business partner who was in litigation. The H didn't matter so forget Narcan. No antidote for coke--just symptomatic. No recreational coke user would've wasted that much; it was a hot dose. Bad karma in that club.
Man as a die hard fan of river Phoenix and how much I've been into him my whole 33yrs of life it's sad to say that you guys idk how or why but you got atleast a handful of things wrong and that hurts my heart do all the research then make your video don't just look into some things we owe it to him not to be shit heads when it comes to telling his story so please redo this after more research
River has a public autopsy. No drugs in his nose and no needle marks on his body. He also showed no signed of drug abuse on his body. John gave him a cup with enough drugs to kill a few people. He was clean on set with no drugs.
John Frusciante could never be jealous of River. He loved him and considered him a close friend of his. He even said they were "cosmic together" whenever they played guitar. You should check his songs "Height Down" (its original title was "Soul Removal") and "Well, I've Been,", River plays guitar and sings in the first one and talks in the second one, only his words are in reverse, but you can also find a clip, here in RUclips, where you can hear what he actually said... his words are supposed to be random, but the result is a little creepy, by the way, so be warned!
Im really not this guy-but another wild theory I have..after being in the business myself. Is...I noticed a pattern and I'll explain it. Every band whose made it has lost a member right before their success. Rolling Stones, Metallica(even the album cover is a premonition for cliff burtons death look it up), The RHCP with Hillel. ASAP Rocky said he doesn't know why but every time he releases a successful album the person closest to him dies. Maybe in some way this was Johns sacrifice for the new fame. I know its ridiculous, and I don't mean that any of the deaths are intentional, its just something dark in the universe that seems to be....if you want fame you must offer a sacrifice. I know. It's ridiculous. But look into it, you'll be shook at the very least.
Jeanne Santabene might not be the expert she thinks she is. If you think a drink handed to you in Hollywood on Halloween couldn't cause a person to convulse and die than you might want to cancel your reading and research. If you think a toxic mixture in liquid form is safe to drink, please don't try it or ask for any volunteers. Nobody said he would feel the effects, just saying he was handed a cup. And the person who commented about his girlfriend being told she would ruin his high is accurate.
River died of coke Od. He was clean for some weeks but back in LA was not good idea. He just pushed too far his limits "helped" by "friends". Possible too it was like a suicide...
Sadly, the people at the Viper Room also waited too long to get the paramedics there. Every second counts. Unfortunately, it was a perfect storm of panic and chaos.
,@@DeathInEntertainment that’s always what I thought too if they would’ve just called 911 immediately, but who would’ve known! and I’m sure it was a crazy atmosphere. It just depends which rumors true, some say he got sick complained about the way he was feeling saying he couldn’t breathe, then vomited. He drank it at the table, or he snorted it in the bathroom, either the guitarist or a drug dealer friend. Supposedly he was at John’s for a few days binging since he got back from Utah. Some say he was clean up until that night at the Viper, again we’ll never know, unless you were right there that night
@@DeathInEntertainment Yes, it’s hard to say. I think it all probably just happened faster than we think, but the ones that knew him, if that theories true -he was complaining to his siblings and Samantha about the way he was feeling and then also who gave him the Valium,, they all should’ve definitely known to call, I bet for sure it would’ve made the difference for life

Now I’d like to address a few topics:
1) BOB FORREST: Forrest published a memoir where he makes the claim that both he and John Frusciante were at the Viper Room that night in 1993. He writes that Phoenix asked him for help, saying he was possibly experiencing the effects of a drug overdose. "I don’t think it’s an OD," Forrest told him. "You can stand and you can talk." He says he still harbors guilt to this day because he "dismissed his worries so casually.”
2) JOHN FRUSCIANTE: Okay, Frusciante was NOT kicked out of The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Below are just a few of the sources I came across:
-NY TIMES:
“Scott Carrier, a spokesman for the coroner's office, said that it was not known how Mr. Phoenix had taken the cocaine and morphine but that no needle marks had been found on his body.”
-WASHINGTON POST:
“An official familiar with the autopsy said that drugs were not found in the actor's stomach and that there were no signs of track marks on his body. ‘It looks like it was snorted,’ he said.”
-THE GUARDIAN (The Untold Story of Lost Star River Phoenix):
Samantha Mathis says “I knew he was high that night, but the heroin that killed him didn’t happen until he was in the Viper Room. I have my suspicions about what was going on, but I didn’t see anything.”
-LAST NIGHT AT THE VIPER ROOM (Book by Gavin Edwards):
He took a drink from a friend, someone he had twice taken to rehab, and gulped it down without asking what was in it. It was a liquid speedball.
-GRUNGE (The Truth About River Phoenix’s Tragic Death):
“According to the coroner, the drugs were not found in Phoenix's stomach, and there were no track marks found on his body. It was then surmised that the drugs were ingested by snorting.”
-REEL REVIEWS (The Untimely Death of River Phoenix): “It was pure-grade Persian brown. Almost immediately after snorting the heroin, Phoenix would begin trembling and shaking violently.”
-FINAL 24 Documentary (Discovery Channel):
“[River’s] been shut out of the jam session, and disappointed, has just snorted a massive speeball.”
-DARK SIDE OF THE 90s Documentary (Vice): “A lot of conflicting versions of what happened…Somebody walked up to the table and then gave him this cup and said, ‘Drink this. You’ll feel great!’ River downs it and almost immediately starts to feel like there’s something in the drink that’s starting to send his body into convulsions.”

Rest in eternal peace River.
yah, I don't know... either John cheated death that night or under estimated the dose he gave River.
Problem is with 8x the lethal amount...
An addict using daily could handle 8-10x that of someone clean.
So snorting all day. You might only need a 0.1 to send you over when ingested.
Tolerance based 8x lethal or 8 x what your heart could handle.
Nothing was found in his nose during the autopsy so he wasn't sniffing anything
I don’t understand why the lies for.
He shot it
You couldn’t snort 8 x times the lethal amount. I guess it’s possible the drink contained that much?
I do not think River's siblings are his blood siblings, he probably had diffrent father.
Me too
His parents were in a weird sex cult so odds are pretty good.
Yeah I thought that. Joaquin, Rain, Liberty and Summer all look a like. And they get their looks from John. River looked COMPLETELY different to all of them.
The autopsy stated that he’s nasal cavities showed no sign of abuse.

You are correct! We'll address that in a follow-up video.
It don't have to be Coke and heroin to be considered speed ball but upper and a downer example Xanax and coke can be a speed ball
@@mikesperko3921 no. What are you talking about man? Speedball is specifically blow and heroin. Some people do shots of meth and heroin and call that a speedball or a "goofball" but what you said isn't true at all anywhere. I don't know where you heard that
Maybe you're thinking it could be any opiate + coke, not specifically heroin + coke.
Sorry BUT yes, he "spiked" the drink. facts
@@winzt9 you can't just add the word "facts" and magically make it a fact dumb dumb
Frusciante did not get bullied outta the chilis. He’s the one that put them on the map. He left on he’s own behalf
Agreed
👍
I copy and paste my post:
That he would collapse and die immediately after receiving that drink cannot be true.
RIP
Wow amazing, sadly and probably true :(

Then we should take away every Oscar from every consacrated actor out there and give them to him, as he would surely be the most perfect actor that ever existed!! The nerve of some people!!
Who does a speedball without shooting it? Never in my life have I ever heard of an oral dose of a speedball.
The 8 grams each was estimated math equation due to bioavailability/absorbtion amount taken orally, I should have stated that sorry.
It's all the more tragic that he was surrounded by people who love him that night.

No. Depp made the speedball cocktail that he told John fachante it give him the little blue cup
You can absolutely pour powder into a drink and drink it, and sounds like something someone would try in the early 90s drug/party crowd.
Not heroin. Oral ingestion has the absolute lowest bioavailability than any other route of ingestion. Plus it's extremely bitter. You would know if it's in a drink lol.
Interesting, sounds like you know more than I do, thanks for the info.@@FilthTribeFTP
Not if you chug it. You won't know until after the fact. He chugged it. He thought it was a drink but he laced it
@@ronnie6696 lol, nah... There's absolutely no way you could drink the entire drink fast enough to not notice the bitter taste until after finishing it. That's like saying if you chugged a glass full of piss fast enough, you wouldn't notice the taste until after; it's a completely asinine assertion to make 🤣
The reason I am able to confidently state this, is because I unfortunately have quite a bit of experience with the drug, so I most definitely am familiar with it's smell and taste, and it is seriously unpleasant and disgusting.
John Frusciante did all sorts of drugs actually. I don't even know much about it but even I know that
I always thought it was heroin (speedball).

What about the co owner of the club who was suing depp. Who disappeared
I'm a recovering addict, when I was actively using if I had overdosed it would have been on me. No one ever held a gun to my head or forced me to do anything. Give it a rest., River was a big boy
That sets a pretty bad precedent if no one's allowed to ask questions regarding an infamous Hollywood death.
Yes, this sounds so likely. Frusciante took time to make a drink with heroin and coke.
He was too a coke guy. They used to do speedball all the time. He did more coke than heroin. Facts.
And we say both drugs. Facts.

Not true. In the interview they talk about rivers death just fyi
Im on the drug!
Im on the drug!
Im on the drug that killed River Phoenix!

Frusciante left the chili peppers in 1992, a year before the death of river phoenix and he left the barn behind completely and didn't speak to them until like 1998
He was in touch with Flea.
Forrest was possibly part of the coverup
Bob Forest was ALWAYS known to be an overreacting drama queen who loved to instigate and spread rumors about people that were either partially true, or just completely full of shit.
John loved coke…why is the dude trying to say that John didn’t do coke??
Bob Forrest couldn’t even stand up when I saw Thelonious Monster open for the Chili Peppers in the 80s .

True
John Frusciante could never be jealous of River. He loved him and considered him a close friend of his. He even said they were "cosmic together" whenever they played guitar. You should check his songs "Height Down" (its original title was "Soul Removal") and "Well, I've Been,", River plays guitar and sings in the first one and talks in the second one, only his words are in reverse, but you can also find a clip, here in RUclips, where you can hear what he actually said... his words are supposed to be random, but the result is a little creepy, by the way, so be warned!
