On this episode of Retail Reviews, Mike and Ryan discuss Nintendo's GameCube and a few of its stand out games. The Nintendo GameCube is a home video game console released by Nintendo in Japan and North America in 2001 and in PAL territories in 2002. The GameCube is Nintendo's entry in the sixth generation of video game consoles and is the successor to their previous console, the Nintendo 64. The GameCube competed with Sony's PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox. The GameCube is the first Nintendo console to use optical discs as its primary storage medium. The discs are in a miniDVD-based format but the system was not designed to play full-sized DVDs or audio CDs unlike its competitors, and mainly focused on gaming instead. The console supports limited online gaming as well.

Don’t, Tencent has a 40% share in epic games. They are fighting a meaningless war with Apple over micro transactions.
Don’t give epic games money.
No thank you, i don't play normie trash©
Uh... You do know that like 90% of your viewer/fanbase is 25 and older right?
DONT DO FORTNITE PLEASE NO
NOOOOOO
You know you're getting old when the Gamecube is retro.
It was inevitable that we would become boomers
is it not?
The system seemed retro even when it was only a few years old. I bought it new and don’t remember a time it ever had a “heyday”. The Wii stole its thunder.
Even the wii is already retro.
GameCube is also retro for young folks
I have fond memories of carrying my Gamecube by the handle while walking to a friend’s house to play Melee and Kirby’s Air Ride.
Loved Kirby Air Ride. City Trial was my favorite mode
Id use the handle for close walks from my cousins houses too !
Your comment made my nostalgia heart skip a beat lol.
Wait you used the Handel?
Man I remember putting serious time in f zero and Zatchbell.
For anyone with a Gamecube:
When you want to take out a disc, there's a silver button in the middle of the holder, press that to release the disc, don't just tear them off. It wasn't shownthat way in the video, so I just wanted to mention it.
Thank you I always felt paranoid they’d break
Who didn't know that?

A ton of people actually, like Ryan in the video at 4:43.

Seriously? Wow I had no idea
"I know a lot of people don't like the Gamecube"
Not when I'm done with them.
Hater: I don't like the Gamecube.
Ozgar Thunderhammer: So, you have chosen death!
Project Mayhem lol
I thought many people like the gamecube. Indeed not my favourite console but it's pretty cool.
hahahaahha yes my emotions exactly
There are people who hate GameCube? I'm a Playstation fan and was into the PS2 but I never hated the Gamecube. Missed out on many great games like Smash Bros and Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes
The controller is still one of the most comfortable ones.
Big agree
Tell that to Smash Bros. pro's. It's by far, the most desired controller to play that series.
Best Nintendo Controller IMO
Agreed. I actually prefer it over any modern controller.
Ergo AF.
GBA player is one of the greatest accessories ever made
The GBA Player is dope because thanks to it, you could play every single Zelda game on the GameCube up until the release of Phantom Hourglass on the DS.
been playing minish cap on mine just today
The Game Boy Player is the main reason I laugh at people who ask me why I use a GameCube instead of a Wii.
"is this just a box, orrrrr..."
"Thats yours, that was here..."
...
"Oh. ok, cool."
One of my favorite games on the Gamecube is Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.
Seriously the best game that was made for that system besides Super Monkey Ball. The mind tricks that game played on you are still epic to this day!
Yep that and Twin Snakes
Such an awesome, inventive take on survival horror for 2002ish. Ahead of its time.
RE4 & Eternal Darkness was really two thumbs up
My friend raved about that game back in the day but I never got around to playing it
I remember I was so hyped for this console that when the specs were published in the Spanish Official Nintendo Magazine, I took the meassures and made a paper Game Cube to see how big it was going to be.
Oh! I remember that paper Game Cube...
I remember a lot of magazines calling it "nintendo dolphin" too, haha.
That’s very precious.
He seems obsessed with Monkey Ball :D
Honestly who isn't
It's a good game. I talk about more of my collection here ruclips.net/video/rMbQWOLtIRI/видео.html
Mike: “Hey, so I brought all of my games to show why the GameCube is so awesome....”
Literally talks only about monkeyball.
Never change, Mike.
Now thats a game that ruined friendship
Starfox games too. That was fun
"I want to talk about all these games!" I'm like oh cool. Talks about only monkey ball.
Mike said they did talk about all of them, but it made the video an hour long. My guess is that hour long videos are too intimidating for casual viewers so he cut it down to half for a better chance of getting clicks.
kyuubinaruto17 But still, out of that hour of footage, why go with 4 mentions of Monkeyball?
I would have love of them talking more about Luigi's Mansion. This game is awesome.
Has a stack of games. Only talks about Super Monkey Ball.
We actually went over ALL the games there when we filmed this. But we cut the video down because it was getting too long. However you can check out this video where I go a bit further on other games: ruclips.net/video/rMbQWOLtIRI/видео.html
It's such an excellent game I still would play it and the minigames.

RUclips sponsorships remind me of those goofy 1950s toothpaste promos they used to have in those old variety shows.
I was born in 1995. I grew up with a SNES and N64, but the GameCube and GBA were the main part of my childhood. I will always love this little console.
My gamecube memory card got corrupted onetime, that was one of my worst moments. RIP 🙏.

Had this stack of games I thought he was going to go through, never got past Super Monkey Ball!
It's the Gamecube's version of Candy Crush. I am NOT surprised.
One of the coolest things about the GameCube was how you could play game boy games on it
With an add on, yes.
No with a cable and gba
Well actually the cable acted kind of as a secondary controller/assistant with certain games. To actually play GB, GBC and GBA games, you needed the game cube game boy advance accessory to play them on the television.
Yes such as transferring pokemon from generation 3 to pokemon Collisium and pokemon xd gale of darkness.
The Gameboy Player that snapped on the bottom
This system actually brought me back to gaming. I hadn't played anything since the SNES.
Then I broke up with my girlfriend and bought a GameCube/windwaker.
Life changing
Broke up with your girl and got a GameCube, what an absolute Chad
@@kingdoge69 Definitely an upgrade.
Nintendo created the expectation of a "gritty" zelda with their tech demo and built buzz then pivoted 180 degrees to windwaker. I believe without that spaceworld demo, it would have been better received.
I remember that tech demo too. I even bought Windwaker, but never got around to playing it because I was so disappointed at the time.
Hmm I didn't know that happened. I always liked the style of windwaker
GameCube was a cool system, but I was in high school and got out of gaming when it was launched. I did play GameCube at a friend’s house, we played 4-player Melee and the Mario Party games. We had lots of fun at birthday parties!
jr U it also has DVD playback. Our high school teacher even had a PS2 as their DVD player!
Same, joined military then bought a ps2.
charleywayne hinkle the PS2 in the early 2000s was such a versatile entertainment system.
I was like 1 when it came out.
Earl Glock whenever I was invited to my friend’s house, we played Melee, it was a much different party. Grime the GameCube didn’t play DVDs, it didn’t have the multimedia features as PS2 and Xbox had.
My favorite game in GameCube was Eternal Darkness, what a game.
came for this comment
Definitely one of the greatest games ever.

I remember my character hallucinating a room full of ammo. I was young, 12 I think, but I remember being super excited because I needed it...but it wasn't real.

I have another video where I go over all my other GameCube games
ruclips.net/video/rMbQWOLtIRI/видео.html
Thats alot of shots
I spent HOURS playing Eternal Darkness. LOVED that game!
That's one of my absolute favorites too!
The GameCube has an amazing library, it’s still my favorite Nintendo console by far
Metroid Prime 1+2 and Timesplitters 2 had to be three of the games in my top list.
Remember the small CD?
The GameCube has a special place in my heart, I kinda wish Nintendo made a follow up based off it.
Amen to that buddy. As another commenter posted, the Metroid series on it is the best fps on the GC. Also the RE remake on it is so brilliant. I was a PS2 man but I gotta put my hands up, it's my fav Nintendo console (tied with N64.)
I can't agree. Really didnt like the gamecube. IT is better then the wii but in my personal Ranking its one of the worst Nintendo console
I thought this was a gamecube review and not one about monkey ball.
It's supposed to be about the console and the games. I'm wondering if there will be a part 2 where they actually talk about the games.
We actually recorded about an hour for this video where we went on to talk about all the games you see sitting on the table. But it was getting a little long. If you want to see a bit more, here's a video with some of my GC games. ruclips.net/video/rMbQWOLtIRI/видео.html
I mean, he didn't get into Monkey Ball until like 20 mins into this 27 minute video
@@JamesNintendoNerd all I know is I want to try this "Monkey Ball" game out....
I’m glad you guys are talking about the GameCube. Such a underrated console! It had so much potential & AMAZING ACESSORIES!
One thing I give the Cube is even today, many of the games still holds up well.
That's why they're remaking a fair amount of them, like Super Mario Sunshine
I am literally playing through Metroid prime on hard mode right now actually. I just got 100% items and about to go fight meta Ridley and finish the game. My 5 year old son has become obsessed with the Metroid series in general and has loved watching me play this one even more than super Metroid! GameCube is probably my favorite system of all time. Even more so since I have the gba player and disc that attach to the bottom of the system.
The kid is 1 of the saviors of this generation!!!
I've got mine still sitting the living room with the GBA attachment, make sure you never lose that Disc, apparently they are really expensive to replace.
I beat Resident Evil on the Gamecube not too long ago. What an amazing game.
You should followup with RE4. It still holds up.
@@watsomd why not 2 and 3?
I recently bought that on a eShop sale for my Switch Lite. Who could have ever imagined that RE remake would be on a handheld console. What a time to be alive (minus all the crazy riots going on right of course)
I've just bought resident evil on gamecube as its so cheap
@@watsomd not even close.
RE Remake > Code Veronica > RE 4
Shook that he doesn't recall that the man in Luigi's Mansion MADE the FLUDD from Mario Sunshine
Everything in their collection is so amazing. My eyes kept getting drawn to that "Final Fantasy II" and "Secret of Mana" behind Mike. That was my childhood jam.
I was a junior in high school, when the Gamecube came out. Worked at Taco Bell, and saved up to buy one--mainly because Resident Evil Remake was being released.
RE0 and RE4 (when it was a Gamecube exclusive) were just added bonuses.
Those Resident Evil games for Gamecube looked amazing at that time and still do.
Glad to see other resi fans these games were amazing i couldnt believe the graphics at the time i was shocked! never thought that nintendo would do the resi series so much justice bk at the time but they did! it was an amazing time to be a gamer!
I was in Kindergarten. Pretty dope.
@TETCOM Oh man, I forgot about the RE1 remake on the GC. That was freaking amazing and far more creepy than the original!
RE4 is one of the best games on the GameCube. So many hours spent playing story and time trials
I grew up with this console, I remember going to Toys R Us (RIP) with my parents to grab this console on launch night I think. So many amazing games on this lunchbox.
Love how they talked about this beautiful system. So many fond memories and countless hours spent playing on it. I wish they talked a little bit more about the games like Resident Evil 4, Super Smash Bros Melee, Pokemon Colosseum, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, etc.
I still have my old GameCube. I love playing my copy of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
I played the heck out of Animal Crossing on the GameCube. I also Loved Eternal Darkness, very underrated Horror game.
I loved Eternal Darkness too
I'm a crisp suit away from going door to door asking people if they would like to talk about our Lord Xel'lotath.
Ich liebe die Arcade Treasers, Enternal Darknes ist auch super.
@Thomas same here. Such great games.
I dont think Eternal Darkness is underrated. Its always mentioned in any list of great horror games. Possibly under-played (due to gamecube adoption rates) but not underrated.
i remember back in the day of the ps2, when it was released it was actually cheaper to get a ps2 rather than an actual dvd player, som many households had a ps2 to watch their dvd's on. kind of amazing from todays pov
The GameCube is probably the most underappreciated console ever
During its time absolutely. Not so much today in 2020 though, videos like this give GC its due. But early 2000s everyone ignored it for the Ps2 (as amazing as Ps2 was and is, GC deserved more attention alongside it imo)
Retro Soul don’t forget about the Dreamcast but it died before the GameCube’s release
Nowadays it's the most overrated console, right up there with N64 and dreamcast.
@@Golemoid just because ppl give attention or show love to something doesn't make it overrated. But I do agree some ppl can it just depends how they praise it. Like "it's the greatest system everrr" lol. GC is way ahead of N64 and DC btw so I don't agree with you there.
"There's was really only 1 game that we played online"

I like how everyone loves the Gamecube after almost 2 decades. I even had one as my only console of the early 2000's generations. Back in my generations, it was the laughing stock because of the Xbox and PS2, but again, I appreciated everyone love for it.
It frequently got criticized because it couldn't play DVDs. I was always like, "I already have a DVD player, I care more about the games."
The resident evil remake was better than every game on ps2 and Xbox combined
All my friends had PS2s and I had the GameCube. Everyone wanted to come over and play Monkey Ball, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Smash Bros, etc. The GC was the best party console ever. It still is
It's because of how priorities have changed over the years with consoles. Back then, it was a huge boon if a console could play DVDs because DVD players weren't literally everywhere, and since the GameCube couldn't do that, it got dunked on in spite of the great games in its library.
I remember GameCube in the UK not having full 3rd party support, so you basically had to buy one of the other consoles.
GC is a great system and I got to say: Metroid prime , oh man such a masterpiece.
Metroid Prime is fantastic!

As someone who got a gamecube in the early 2000's, I absolutely agree it was an amazing console. It was the best at coop and couch multiplayer, games like Mario Kart Double Dash and Timesplitters. The problem was that the ps2 completely overshadowed both the gamecube and xbox. I love the ps2, but it just felt unfair to the competition.

I love how passionate they are about old school hardware and games. It’s people like these guys that keep the past relevant and attractive still. There was a time before these kinds of people on youtube where you wouldn’t even care to think about old games and hardware whatsoever.
This reminds me of that episode of Xplay when they were dropping all three consoles off a two story building with the GameCube surviving the most falls without flunking.
GameCubes are made of a rare material called Nintendium. In the aftermath of a post-apocalyptic world, there will be 3 cockroaches, Keith Richards, and a GameCube jamming out on split screen.

But without a doubt, it completely grew on them, I had it and loved it. Still do. And above many of my other gamecube games I would say windwaker graphics are actually some of the best. Its so smooth and the rich and reactive gameplay just runs like a dream.

Finally! Someone agrees with me that the GameCube is awesome!
Edit: I've owned my Gamecube since I was a kid and I haven't had a single issue with the laser.
My laser stopped working after about 3 years of usage. That's literally the only reason why I stopped using my GameCube and switched to Xbox
I have a gamecube now, but back when I had to decide on whether to buy a Gamecube or a Playstation 2 I went playstation mainly due to the artstyle of Windwaker. I was on the fence until I saw it as I was wanting the more realistic graphics at that time.
Like most people. It's funny to see now that playstation 2 has aged the worsy with the worst graphics of the generation and yet eternal loading times, while windwaker art style still looks fresh and awesome and gamecube load times basically doesn't exist
A game ahead of its time for sure, it’s my favorite and is widely considered the best Zelda in the whole franchise

I mean nothing wrong with playing it on the gamecube; but I wouldn't really knock the wii at all either, it's a solid and heavily underrated console that is fairly affordable even today on any budget.
Also, unlike a gamecube, it's VERY easy to mod if you want to do that, and there is a lot you can do with it- including making games boot in a gamecube like way (Like mike's issue) albeit it takes a slight bit of know-how or finding a tutorial.

I lovd the little Easter egg in the BIOS. When there is no game in the gamecube, it plays an extremely slowed down version of the Famicom Disk System starting up.
