Batman: The Video Game is the best licensed game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Mike Matei Ryan, and Kieran discuss other licensed NES games, other Batman games, and do a deep dive review on this Sunsoft classic. The game is loosely based on the 1989 film of the same name. The game contains five levels culminating in a showdown with the Joker in the bell tower of Gotham Cathedral. It was received well despite changes from the movie upon which it was based.

-What about the cat on (--06:39--) Tiny Toon adventures on nes?-
Saludos.
-Thats a jump style-
:)
Could we get less Ryan? He just brings this vibe to the video that is just terrible.
Shoutout to the Starfleet Academy, 16 bit movie, in the back!!!
Ways to differentiate game era's Bit based era, Polygon based era, HD era...
"Spear" NOT harpoon...
As I huge Masters of the Universe fan, I demand to hear Mike's Skeletor rant in it's entirety!
I love how in the movie, Batman can arguably be accused of killing the Joker inadvertently when he was trying to escape, but in the NES game for children, Batman just straight up fucking MURDERS Joker.
Inadvertently? He told the Joker that he will kill him.
BATMAN was an accomplice by shooting the gun that wrapped the cable around the gargoyle and jokers leg while on the ladder of the helicopter
Why do they keep giving the Kieran guy a hard time whenever he says anything? He seems like a nice guy I’d like to hear him talk without being shut down.
Mötley Crüe it’s part of the act
@@CFarleySNL2490 Doubt that.
it's creepy of you to try to affect the dynamics of their bond. Stop right now
Kierans my fave n i feel he doesn't get to speak enough.
They do? I think it was just that one joke about them not caring when he's speaking, which is me a lot of the time. I really try not to continue talking about some shit when no one is listening lol
Mike's Joker is still my favorite adaptation. Don't think we've forgotten :P
Is Guile and Ryu having a moment on the right side of the table?
A dirk is a long thrusting dagger. Historically, it was a personal weapon of officers engaged in naval hand-to-hand combat during the Age of Sail as well as the personal sidearm of Highlanders.
Long, thrusting...hence the name Dirk Diggler
a Dirk is me? my name is Dirk.
Kieran is still my favorite. I would have talked about that dope ass figure way more. Love you buddy.
Same here lol I love neca
Same! I actually made a NECA commercial revolving around the Aliens figure line.
Kieran’s my favorite
Maybe they’re just dink’s
The Sunsoft composer, who did Batman, Journey to Silius, and others, currently teaches musical theory at a university, so there's that.
The music is epic. Is his name Kodaka?
Justin's Batman in the intro comes off more like the Danny Devito/Batman Returns Penguin
Violator.
Justin? I swore that was Ben Affleck. I had to go back and rewatch.
@@martinrc80 if you watch the Danny Devito Penguin he looks and sounds just like him lol
@@Shadowking81 I was joking saying that I thought Justin was actually Ben Affleck doing a cameo... obviously he was just doing his Violator impression under a cowl.
Here wear a button!
When it comes to the Batman movies I still really like Tim Burton's.
Poor Kieran. I liked your whole spiel about the Neca recolors.
I actually wanted to learn more but they cut him off
You could tell they didn’t even want him there.
They also cut him off at least a half a dozen times.
I was interested in Kieran’s NES figures.
I was to. Kieran seems like such a cool, fun guy who nerds out but doesn't feel the need to be super king nerd.
I'd watch a video of him just showing off his collection.
Kieran gets picked on more it seems. At least he takes it light
lemmingscanfly5 same! I just looked them up on eBay lol
Kieran seems like he's surrounded by narcissists and they're devouring his self-esteem.
I beat this game when I was a kid. I recorded it on VHS to prove to my friends that I could beat it
I recorded all the cut scenes in Wing commander 3 with a tv vcr combo. .
@@willeysingleton3057 that is so fucking cool.
When I was a kid I had no idea you could record video games to VHS.
It sounds like you all had a lot of fun.
@@marcorizo1387 You have NO idea... hehe
*thumbs through VHS/Betamax NES gameplay collection*
Kieran is my dude. You guys better be nice to him. That toy was cool and I appreciated the insight.
Chris Richmond how many accounts did you make to stick up for your self Kieran lol
HookshotVRM oh look Kieran made another account
HookshotVRM I got dis ability to make you angry boi.
Keiran is my fave, he is deffo the most down to earth of the group and usually speaks the most sense. Love when he goes into his monolougs as it shows his inteligent streak!! Keep up the good work Kieran!! And your editing rocks!!!
Thank you!
Is that the Violator hiding inside that Batman suit?
Either way, that was the biggest-looking Batman I've ever seen! XD
Whoever edited the outside shot of the store during Mike's rant on Skeletor. Thank you. Self awareness editing it my favorite type of comedy.
The composer’s name is Naoki Kodaka. He also did Batman Returns, Blaster Master, Journey to Silius, Gremlins 2, and others. Give the man some credit, dudes! He’s one of the all time greats of 8-bit music.
And another thing about Skeletor
😴😪😴
More like SkeleTON wait that's the original word.
Music guy here:
I can confirm for you that the reason the music in games like Batman and TMNT is so good is because it is fucking badass music that sounds cool and stuff.
Very deep comment from a music guy /s
Thank you for your expert analysis sir.
Thank you for this analysis
Like Mozart himself would put it to Wagner.
Tiny Toon Adventures for Nes is pretty good licensed game
Love that game.
NPC #34254334 Response: then why did you say Tiny Toons was too hard then that batman was more rewarding despite being harder?
Your right it is. But its not as good as batman. Gremlins, Bucky O'hair, or ducktails. But yea it is a great game.
That game made me furious as a kid, I would try so hard to get to Monty just to get destroyed. Every...single...time.
Choujin Sentai JETMAN, also a good licensed games.
Fun fact: Journey To Silius by the same company was supossed to be a licensed Terminator game.
optiorespb Never heard of that! 😮 Hopefully someone at Cinemassacre will check it out!
I remember how hard this game was.... I managed to beat it as a kid, and friends used to call me at their home to show them the ending...
Yo, this was legit such a great watch. And also, heavy duty kudos to whoever decorated the store set for this episode! I assume it's all stuff from cinemassacre's various collections, and if that's the case, I as a viewer am very grateful for this peek into your collection of Cool stuff
thrillhouse.vanhouten i agree and they got such a good collection 🔥👌
James did videos years ago showing off this "set". Basically he built a video/game rental store in his basement. He displays his collection on shelves like in a rental place, so if he wants to watch a movie or play a game he can go round browsing everything like an old blockbuster back in the day. It's a kind of experience we can't get anymore, the fun of browsing a rental place with no particular movie or game in mind, just choosing one based on the cool cover or whatever. It's a bit crazy, he must have had to put in so much work to build it all. But it's damn cool
Then eventually they began this series, rental reviews, and already had the set built because it was there anyway. Maybe he'd planned for years to do this series and that's why he built it all years ago, but I think he just wanted to build it because it was a cool idea and then had the idea for the video series later
Why does Batman sounds like Danny Devito's Penguin from Batman Return 😂
ANUBIS209 didn’t devito’s penquin wear a bat suit
@@tommyaldridge5252 I don't remember if he did but I did remember he shot bats out of his umbrella and scared off that chick off the building.
@@ANUBIS209 that was so sad...she was hot and fell to death and got electrocuted and peed her pretty panties =,( *NOOOOO BAAAAEEE!!!*
Also, Penguin totally high jacked the Batmobile...and that was funny af.

4:06 I like how they have the infinity gauntlet giving the finger.
@@golden_eldorado That's the Street Fighter II Rock Em Sock Em Robots game. I want one.
i have my Thanos Hot Toy holding up the middle finger for display lol
12:54 Ryan's face when Mike literally says what he said 5min ago.
I noticed that too lol
I was dying
Batman's game soundtrack is one of the most iconic sets of music produced for the NES. The Midi loops are meticulously crafted with amazing percussive patterns/and polyphonic textures. Batman holds it's own in comparison to TMNT/megaman/castlevania/ducktales OST's.... My life wouldn't be the same without it
The colonial Marines take at the beginning was hilarious.
I bought that game on sale (A year after Release) without knowing about the internet. I love it but in hindsight, that joke TOTALLY LANDED! Kudos y'all!
Colonial Marines was a good game people had no respect for. The development got all messed up and it almost was abandoned.
Funny. I was talking to a friend about that game today. It's not terrible though far from great.
@@codprocamp4690 which turned it into a steaming pile of horseshit. Move on now.
to be honest, Mike Matei has the best Joker laughter of them all. it's perfect.
Cool that you got Ben Affleck to reprise his Batman role for the intro!
I care, Kieran. :(
Me too. : (
Oh really? Batman starts with all his weapons? Good idea, good thing they didn't make Batman drive to the store dodging traffic to buy all his equipment, that's so stupid no one would ever do that to an iconic movie franchise on the NES...
The next best setting for this conversation would be toward the back of a school bus.
Or a school cafeteria
That is an excellent idea!
The intro was EPIC 😂😂😂😂
As a music nerd i love the music in this Batman definitely in my top 10 nes soundtracks. The music in Return of the Joker is also awesome..
I think *"Return of the Joker"* music was better..
Thank you Kieran, I’ve been saying that exact same thing about the Christopher Nolan movies for over a decade now. It’s caused many fights
When you mentioned Arcus, I almost lost it, because I love Arcus. Best speed runner streamer ever. Hes like the Bob Ross of speed running.
Bob Ross of speed running is the perfect way of describing him. :D
That's a perfect analogy
"Mash, mash, mash", that was good bzzz"
Okay, I lost it at "Robin! Pack my Dirk!"
I loved this game so much. I used to be able to play it all the way through in one shot! I loved the background graphics as well. My mom had given me glow-in-the-dark paint and I used it to paint a mural of the Gotham City graphic seen in the game. During the day or with lights on you couldn’t see it, but turn the lights off, there’s a glowing Gotham on my wall!
Final Fantasy VI/III for SNES also has those graphics where every color fades into the dark background colors! But to do this on the NES and get almost a similar result is extra impressive!
I freakin' love Kieran.
The penguin playing batman blew my mind.
CRT colour bleed was integral for making sprite's colour gradients smoother, giving the slight impression of higher pixel count.
Your Batman impression sounds like John Leguizamo from Spawn.
Gremlins 2 on NES: *cries in mogwai*
Ill agree with you my friend it really is one of the best license games on the nes
And both developed by Sunsoft, no less. Right up there with Konami and Capcom.
I think Willow is up there as well. Better game than it was movie for sure.
Christopher Earl so the game is better than epic?
@@christopherearl8948 What's interesting is that it more follows the sequel novels, referencing the whole backstory of the sky and earth spirits. But yes, definitely up there on the list.
I got to agree they haven't made a true representation of Batman, It seems every director wants to do their own thing with Batman. Tim Burton got pretty close and wish he would do a 3rd Batman with Michael Keaton.
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. It was released in theaters so it counts.
I agree 100% the newer ones aren't terrible but super overrated.
Only in the the video game world could Batman vs Scrooge McDuck be a legit conversation to have
All I have to say: Worf's bat'leth on the wall. Excellent.
Turtles III on the NES would be my choice for best licensed game. I could rock that any day.
This was Batman: Arkham for the 1980s.
@TheVoiceOfTruth but the Arkham games are MUCH better
"I know more about He-man than you!" "I'm happy for you." xD
That Rock'em Sock'em Guile and Ryu look like they're slow dancing to a 80's pop ballad, haha!!
Why is the clown from spawn cosplaying as Batman in the begining of this vid
This is one of the absolute best NES games out there. Gameplay, graphics, incredible music, it just has everything. It's the total package.
I agree...but i think ducktails is better in every area.
Hmmm yes, Duck Tales is very much up there in the top 3.
The Ryu and Guile toys on the counter look like they are sharing a special moment... @22:55
I’m really enjoying this episode. I love how in depth you guys go about the wall jumping!
Good call Erin.
You beat this game not too long ago i believe.?
I love this game. I went back and finally beat it and now I just rum though it whenever i feel the urge and its always awesome.
"YOUR MOTHER!"- James
16:20
"Oh that's cool..."
That’s so funny to me idk why i keep rewatching it
I really enjoyed the TMNT games and their music....who's with me?!
Finally! I have been waiting on a new episode of Retail Reviews! You gotta pump out more of these!
@Lord Brain Thundercats was the subject of a bad computer game.
@14:23 Ryan's response: "That's... that's great." 😂
Kieran: “I don’t think that they’ve made a good Batman film yet.”
Oookaaaay...
I forgot Batman Forever
A2Z83 That is 100% correct, they all suck.
The original 90s film was awesome
Guy blows the MCU every chance he gets, its pretty clear he don't care for well written movies.
Another good licensed game, this time for the Genesis, is Jurassic Park. That one was great
Which one? There was like so many of them released on both SNES/Genesis in the few years around the time JP came out lol.
@@Sifer2 I said Genesis. It has less problems and plays well
I hate it. But then again.. the password pisses me off
@@brycevo there is more than 1 JP game on Genesis (i.e. Rampage Edition). That's most likely what Jav253 was referring to.
That game pissed me off as a kid
Dark knight returns animated movies are underrated. I love those two films. And the score is amazing
The effect of the batman sprite looking better on the CRT TV with an analogue connection was indeed done on purpose. The developers used an effect called dithering to 'checkboard' colours as the developers knew that on a analogue connected CRT TV the colours would blend together. This effectively allowed the devs to use more colours then was technically possible for the current hardware. This was also used to create pseudo transparent effects on hardware that did not support transparencies. You are also correct in that playing these games on an digital connected LCD display will not have the same effect and you will see a lot of 'checkboarding' on sprites and textures as the blending effect is not happening to create those new colours.
Wall jumping in Super Metroid is very similar and is amazing. Its a move you dont even know until late in the game and then you can do a second play thru and see where you can use this knowledge early on. Ofcourse that is a snes game
My favourite video game rental store Fucholand is the bees knees. They have it all. Great products, reasonable prices, knowledgeable customer service, felchin and smiles all around!
Sunsoft was 2nd to none when it came to NES sound and music. Prob best in the game. On the subject of Sunsoft, Id love to see a review of Gimmick, or even Gremlins 2
Zack Schilling They're so fantastic. Gimmick has so many mechanics that I've never even seen in an NES game, same for Gremlins 2 for that matter
Mr Gimmick is so unique for a NES game. The controls and engine are all momentum based. Like Sonic. I'm not sure if it came out before or after sonic but if it was after then maybe it was partly inspired by it. Mr Gimmick is hard as heck at points though
Sunsoft games had the best Sound Tracks, in Japan a couple of years ago a company released a Compilation called Sunsoft Rom in Cassette. It has Two discs worth of Sunsoft music, from Batman to Blaster Master.
Is it just me or does Ryu and Guile look like they are holding hands and touching foreheads in a loving embrace?
Sunsoft made great soundtracks for the NES, with games like journey to silius, blaster master and this batman game
So many people forget to mention batman 2. It was also sunsoft and the music is probably the best of any nes game
@@daviddefortier5970 batman 2? Return or revenge of the joker?
Only sunset game i dont like is Festers Quest
Omg Ryu and Guile look like they're slowdancing at prom 😂😂🤣🤣😭😭
Even as a kid I always interpreted the purple color as representative of him just being in the shadows. I never thought he was actually purple. But it is pretty awesome that they released that purple Batman collectors figure.
Seeing you play this live on Twitch with that high quality CRT footage was awesome!
Gameplay hasn't aged a day.
No one talks about the PC Engine Batman 😢
Although Return of the Joker on the Gameboy is my favourite...and no one talks about that either.
Nobody talks about the master system game Batman Returns, which is one of the best looking 8 bit games to the point where it almost looks 16 bit. And some people prefer the gameplay of that to the NES batman, it's that good. All of the batman games at this point seemed to be great, then the 16 bit era batmans were hit or miss, but some of them were still great games
@@duffman18 That game was great, I had it for the Game Gear!
Batman Returns for the SNES hands down. Everything you wanted in a Batman game
@@duffman18
What is Master System?
Speaking of music, the Genesis version of Batman & Robin was scored by Jesper Kyd, who went on to do a bunch of games like Assassin's Creed and Hitman.
Jelly of the signed Michael Dorn/Worf picture.
My favorite NES game of all time and the music is really iconic and recognizable, and it's the only best licensed game on the NES.
You should check out Batman Returns for the master system. It's probably not better than the NES batman but if you like the NES one you should like this too, it's one of the best master system games. It's also one of the best looking 8 bit games, it almost looks like it could be on a genesis or turbografx
Batman returns for NES is a quality beat em up. super challenging to get the complete ending. return of joker is wayyyy too easy.
John Williams it’s for both.
The BGM composer of this game is Naoki Kodaka, besides the fact that he is a professional musician, he certainly was inspired on this one.
Shatterhand is clearly this wonderful game's spiritual successor. I've always felt this way. Dunno if you've reviewed it, or made mention in another video.
I still think arkham asylum is the best one. Infiltrating the asylum was so fun, felt like metal gear solid. For me, not every game needs to be open world.
yes totally all the hidden stuff you accidentally find made it have replability. arkham city while also great didn't do it as much
@@historyofvideogamesandmyop2913 level design was excellent and it was almost a metroidvania style.

There were a LOT of old school computer graphics that were expressly designed around the distorting effects of CRT screens, to create more colors than the programming itself would do on paper.
When Batman's utility belt is overloaded with equipment, he has Robin cheek his dirk.
Kieran referenced Arcus! Arcus is a great NES speedrunner! I try to catch his streams anytime I can.
This makes me happy to love batman and avgn alot more. You guys rock!
* a lot
Kieran, I like those NES action figures too. I only have the Rambo one. So cool, has all these weapons that came with him and stuff...
I wish you made more of these videos. They're great.
The bat'leth on your wall makes me smile. ☺️
NERD!
I like Jean-Luc more thank Kirk.
Duck Tales, and Darkwing Duck are probably my favorite licensed games on the NES
You absolutely have to try Mickey Mouse Land of Illusion on the Master System. It's like a clone of ducktales, a very very good one. It's got the same bouncing mechanic, it's got very similar looking items and chest boxes, even the level design on some parts is so close you could almost call it plagiarism. But it's got enough of its own stuff that you could almost imagine it to be like the lost ducktales 3 we never got. Definitely check it out if you're a ducktales fan. The game is nothing like the genesis world of illusion really, apart from it has some of the same songs and stuff
Well now I know what I'm going to rewatch!
*... rewatches AVGN's Superman 64 video *
Sunsoft musical style is awesome. The new Blaster Master Zero games have some of the best music ever!
God, this guys never fail to keep me entertained
The real Joker would never wear a T-shirt with his likeness on it.
Pssst. The Joker is not a real person.
so true. the real Joker is a very complicated person.
Maybe the "dirk" shuriken was a reference to the Krull glaive, which ISN'T a glaive, and is instead a throwing star made of switchblades?
Loved this game, the soundtrack is amazing I still get the songs stuck in my head in spite of not playing it for probably 20 years
