Ninja Turtles on NES is Actually a Good Game - Retail Reviews

- Mike Matei gets together with Ryan and Kieran to discuss why Ninja Turtles for the Nintendo Entertainment System is actually good!! That's right. Sure, there's an entire AVGN episode ripping on Nintendo TMNT. But we will show you why it's a lot better than you remember. If you didn't know, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles we're huge in the 80s and 90s and in 1989 a side-scrolling platform game for the NES was released by Konami. In North America it was published the Ultra Games imprint in the US and the equivalent PALCOM brand in Europe/Australia.

"I rented it from a grocery store..." probably the most 90's statement I've ever heard...
Naah man, that’s 80’s too
renting them nintendo *tapes* !
Dude I totally did that
Nice!
When I was a kid we rented a suitcase with a VCR in it.
I've been wondering where they've been filming this. Did they actually rent out some cheap retail space or did they just outfit Mike's basement like James has with the video store?
Mike is like a Dark Souls player "Just git gud and know everything about the game"
You're right.
My childhood was a sad situation.
😆😆😆
At least I can take comfort in the familiar.
I'm really glad I was able to grab the Virtual Console version before the license ran out and Nintendo had to pull it from the eShop.
I'm really glad I have an NES classic amd no moral code about sailing the high seas for 30+ year old games.
Here's the thing about Mikey in TMNT1 tho: if his health drops to half (4 blocks), his nunchaku do *double damage* so you get Donnie's attack power but at Raph's attack speed.
Never knew that
I played this game a lot when I was a kid. It was TMNT, of course I'm gonna play it! lol Yes, it was hard as balls, and I still haven't beaten it to this day (mainly because I haven't tried in like 20 years), but it was still fun and well designed enough for me to keep trying. I enjoyed the Nerd episode for the nostalgia of the frustration, but it didn't change my feelings on the game personally; I enjoyed it as a kid and I still think it was well done, despite it's difficulty. I mean, over half of the NES library is hard; it comes with the territory. :)
I hear ya. This and the Manhattan Project were the only games I played for several years. (edit) I've only ever beat the Manhattan Project.
Wow nicely said 👍🏽
here in PUERTO RICO IN the EARLYs 90s..when I ever went to PIZZA HUT they always have a TNMT..ARACADE MACHINE... ALWAYS..but I don't know in the states..
I find that funny that a Pizza Hut of all places would have a TMNT arcade machine, considering the Ninja Turtles love pizza.
@@benjaminvlz are you been sarcastic 🤔😂😂😂
Basically any place with an arcade stateside.
@@matthewsandifer2673 YYYEEEESSZ.. TRUE 😂
two things I was proud of with this game
1) I learned the under water level so well I was able to make it through without hitting a single seaweed
2) I made it to the technodrome
lol
TMNT 2 was devalued as soon as Turtles in Time came out; but it's still a great game and one of the best of it's kind on the NES. I can't think of an easier pick for some quick 2 player fun at the time. You can knock it for it's arcade beat-em-up repetition, sure; but at least it's straightforward and completing it doesn't seem like a near impossible task, unlike TMNT(1).
That one, I *never* got more than halfway through. For all it's good qualities, there's an equal amount of annoyances. It's difficult, aggravating and just too demanding - even for a kid with all the time in the world to waste.
I do still respect it for it's unique qualities, it was never 'just another platformer'; but there's a reason most of us put it back on the shelf and left it there once other, better TMNT games came out.
Technically, no turtle dies in this game. They are only captured, which is why you can find them and add them back to your roster.
Am I the only one who never had that much trouble with the dam/water level?
Another game that people say sucks, but actually gets fun when you get good is Street Fighter 2010. With a fully upgraded character and skill, you can do wonders in that game.
I never knew about the whole "different Turtles, for the situation thing". But the way you were describing it, it reminded me of Lost Vikings. That got me thinking. What if you combine the characters from the Ninja Turtles with similar game mechanics from Lost Vikings? Throw some puzzle solving in there. Example, switch to Donatello for computer hacking. Michelangelo rides a skateboard so he's fast. Leonardo does the most damage and has the least defense. Rafael is the opposite. I'd buy that game.
I got TMNT on NES for Xmas when I was 9. At age 38 (this year!) I completed it and I felt more proud of that than completing a 5 year degree. It’s such an awesome game.
Having Mike explain which turtle is better in what reminds me Nioh when you switch up weapon stance for the right occasion. You don't have to but it'll make thing easier
The boss music when fighting the technodrom and shredder is some of the best boss music in any game to this date. It really makes you realize shit is about to hit the fan and you better be on your a game.
Received this game on my 7th birthday, it was on that day I went through the full spectrum of human emotions.
Really enjoy the content and reviews. Thanks Cinemassacre!
I never thought this game sucked, I always thought it was just hard. Then I saw the AVGN video and started to think it sucked, but was always reluctant to give into that notion. After watching this video, I’m glad I never thought it sucked.

The original Wii had it available on the virtual console when the virtual console released.
I really enjoyed this review. I owned this game and it was difficult, but in an era where you didn't really own a ton of games (which was mentioned), it had a ton of value. Just about everything mentioned was spot on. I made it very far in the game but I never did beat it. I think the one thing that made this game from being a classic was the lack of a save function. For the most part you really had to set aside a lot of time to play the game, and you couldn't practice the later levels to get better at it them. But overall I loved this game and am happy I have it in my collection.
I was the same way with this game. When I played it when it was new, I thought it sucked and was terrible. Now many years later and watching Mike stream it multiple times. I don't think the game sucks anymore and now I want to actually go through it and beat for the first time. lol Great video guys!
I think the ORIGINAL non-arcade Turtles NES was the best.
You heard me.
Off topic but anyone notice the infinity gauntlet in the display giving incoming customers the finger?
I played this when I was a kid, teenager, and adult. Any game has flaws and I thought the difficulty was crazy at the end but I never thought it was bad.
I never thought about it, but TMNT for NES is a very good game thematically.
Back when some grocery stores had movie rental places attached to them. Those were the days.
I grew up on Long Island and Pathmark had $1 rentals for two days back in the 90s. Cheaper than Blockbuster, but not as much of an inventory.
My vid store was attached to my Farm Fresh,
which was attached to my Wal☆Mart...
I always went to check out the games and play the demos in Hollywood Video while my mom shopped for 2 hours.
Shoutout to Clerks
I rented a lot of games from Kroger back then.
Sub-weapon tip: you can "share" the boomerangs by throwing a few out and then switching turtles. The new turtle will add them to his sub-weapon slot.

Well it's not possible to finish ET.
@Asher Heywood-Peters Have you finished E.T.? Why not make a video about that lol
Because it's not
ET had some exploration and progression goals. It wasn’t just another Atari shooter.

One of my favorite NES games of all time, really a unique entry. The Dam level and the scene that follows will always be cemented as one of my memorable gaming triumphs as a kid
I play Turtles in Time by myself quite often. Never felt sad about it. It is always plenty of fun for me.

I still play that all the time too. Fun game with just enough challenge to stay interesting
I played it too much myself I have the grapples down to a science sadly

This was one of my all time favorites as a kid, original NES
Ryan O ́Leary yep for me this was the best tmnt game and heaps of fun.
Yep.. Got the original Turtles when I was a kid ans still love it
Fog. It was loads of fun and a great introduction to console gaming but I think Turtles in time was a better game.
My cousin had this game. I did like like this game very much, but I dont think I ever completed it all the way. This turtle game has crazy nostalgia for me.
Soak Joke At that age, it was incredibly hard
Hard as nails but so satisfying when you complete it!

I'd love to see an enhanced remake of this game, same levels only make game play fluid and good this time.
Thank you Cowabunga Collection!
Three tips for playing this game:
1. Use Donatello
2. Use Donatello
3. Use Donatello
Addendum: When you're at risk of an instant death (like that room with the spike walls closing in on you), do NOT use Donatello. Sacrifice Mikey or Raph.
I beat the entire game with Raphael.
1. Get the staff
2. Get the staff
3. Get the staff
Why do that when Raphael is the best?!?

No doubt it's a good game. It's just difficult.
I remember when I spent a weekend playing this with my friend Mark as a kid. We were thrilled when we finally beat it. Good times.
Easily one of the best NES soundtracks.
The music and graphics are great! Just the game play suffered.
The hallway before Shredder is the one part that was egregiously difficult. Most of the games difficulty was par for the course back then.
It's not that bad, but hate the second level.
"Couldn't get past the dam level..." Yep... they're all "dam" levels!
Some of the best memories I ever had playing this game, never beat the game, but it reminds me of a much simpler time in my life and miss it.

Disarming the bombs at the dam was one of the major milestone moments for me.
I could disarm them without losing any hit points. After that, I could only do a couple more rooms before it got too hard and I gave up.
@@DergEnterprises after the dam, the techno-drone was the next battle for me. It wasn't as hard as the dam, but I believe it was because of the repeated game play trying
Thats because the best level was right after the dam!
I never really had that much trouble with the game until the third stage. Was never able to make it past the fourth - too much of a maze.
@@DergEnterprises - YES! Getting all the bombs disarmed and still having all 4 turtles alive was the achievement!

I won’t diss on anyone that doesn’t love this game. That said, this is one of my absolute favorite NES games and I think it gets more shit than it deserves.
Josuervo47 right! It’s not our fault they suck at the game.. it’s the same with Kid Chameleon. It gets a bad rep cuz it’s hard as fudge.
It's easy to make fun of and some parts haven't aged well, but there is fun to be had. The music is awesome, there's a subtle strategy with switching turtles and you get to have some pretty neat subweapons too.
@Hayabusa 530 I played and beat the game more than a few times as a kid. However, I wasn't crazy enough to believe that it was an actual good well programmed game, like Contra and Castlevania. The game was above average at best, if not very frustrating at times imo. The music was awesome though.
To prove I beat it as a kid, the strategy was to use the triple stars on the technodrone, and save the scrolls for two turtles right up until you get to the last hallway with the astronauts. If you had at least 25 scrolls by that point, the astronauts and shredder were no big deal. I didn't know about the Donatello Shredder glitch back then.
M3l4nin P4r7icl3
Wow... nice “proof.” 😶
Anyone who beat that game will know I played it till the end just from that. That's how difficult the last hallway was and the majority of the people who beat it, used that strategy.
I played that Damn Dam level so many times i could eventually get through with 1 turtle no hits, but I tried it again last year and I had to use your multi turtle trick. Sucks getting old
You just have to learn again. Believe me, I’m 50 and I still play those games and beat them.........
Might be lag. HDTVs add lag and so do emulators. Original hardware on a CRT makes you realize you're not just a victim of old-man reflexes.

I remember as a kid, my father brought Ninja Turtles (PC) from when he was traveling. I was so excited. It was the most disappointing thing I ever played.
I had a very similar experience with Mega Man for DOS. Much disappointment.
I especially feel bad for you because the Dos version was actually unbeatable. You can't get past a certain jump without using a glitch
@@Tribladeofchaos Actually depending the version you could beat it. The European version called Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles was modified to allow you to make the jump.
All of the computer ports of this game are unplayable rubbish, unfortunately.
I didn't know there was a DOS version. Even if it kind of sux, it might be cool to own it anyway because it's probably rare.
"For Playstation 4, I have like over 10 games."
Not sure why I found that so funny.
Because almost no one that owns one only has like 10 games. I only have like 5 lol
I know I have about 60, it was a bad analogy for sure
I was expecting a whole lot more than 10, that’s what made me laugh
I think I might have just 10.... damn
It was funny to me because it came across as an accidental humble brag to what was an arguably adequate number.
24:05 "but it's just a hard game that you need to learn" man this describes Revenge of Shinobi perfectly. A really great challenging game that both you and Ryan crapped on due to a lack of understanding of the games mechanics and overall gameplay. I hope you can revisit!

Just like that family of five that I murdered in a coffee shop back in 2011.
@The Duke you already know the answer to that question.
You could just walk over it?
When the turtle you're playing with is at half-health or less, he does double damage.
yet another thing that the game doesn't explain. The absence of tips into the game or the manual unnecessarily increases the difficulty. That and the level of difficulty at the start is why people consider it as a bad game.
Hmmmm didn't know that at all.
logically makes no sense. what makes sense is doing more damage at full health like in Zelda 1 and 2 for nes how u can shoot a beam.
Clever rat
I really liked this when I was a kid, it was just hard, but the kind of hard where if you keep playing you still make progress.
Resident evil 7 makes my potatoes all warm and buttery if you catch my vernacular.
I liked it but I was forever stuck in the water level. I never got past it.
I never did it as a kid, but when I got back into playing NES in my mid 20’s it wasn’t all that hard, there’s certainly a lot worse in the library. You just got to prepare for the Technodrome by grinding for scrolls. I don’t 100% finish it every time I try, you can sometimes have a bad run where the space men at the end drain all your health (once you die on the last level no point even trying to continue all your sub weapons are gone and you are screwed) but I’m fairly consistent.
LOL That water lvl; I fuchin' loved this game still:P
The last line spoken in this video is a 100% 🎯
I'm so glad this game is finally getting the full on Cinemassacre seal of approval. It's my favourite NES game, so much depth with the strategy and tons of variation and situations that force you to learn without holding your hand like so many modern games. Such a well designed game, I was always of the opinion that people who shit on it just remembered not being able to beat it as a kid. Just cos it's hard doesn't make it bad. It took me twenty something years to get good at this game. Konami really knew what they were doing. Thanks for the proper review!😊
It has lots of problems, but the more you play it, the more you learn how to work around those problems.
But the way Donnie is so OP makes it less enjoyable to play. I wish there was more balance between the turtles, with each having a different strength and weakness.
Well, the vast majority of games for the NES are difficult, so unless they're only playing Bubble Bobble or something, they probably have other reasons for not liking it. I never finished half the games I had and I liked most of them to some extent, although there were a few I couldn't stand. Like Mission Impossible. Oh, and Back to the Future. But I've had plenty of games featured on AVGN that were a lot better than he gave them credit for. Friday the 13th comes to mind. They actually revisited that one and both changed their minds about it; Mike beat it on stream, and they did a few runs together on YT.
This was the 2nd game I ever owned, my parents bought it at babbages for me when I was 6. I too had alot of the same complaints.. But now after this video I think I'm gonna go home and try to play it with some new strategies. . Great video guys. I'd love more videos with this style. It really changed my perception of the overall gameplay.
Damn I loved that store! Electronics Boutique replaced them when I was a kid
"Laugh at the episode; play the game."
Nicely said.
@@Man_of_Tomorrow It's also important to keep in mind the context in which the AVGN emerged. Mid-2000s was peak NES nostalgia. The NES could do no wrong. Along comes the AVGN and says, here are shitty things about those games you remember as being perfect. Later fans to the series only hear "SHIT FUCK BUFFALO DIARRHEA DUMP ASSSSS!!!!!!"
The death tune for turtles is forever ingrained in my brain from childhood
The arcade game on NES is actually my Favorite NES game.
I've never actually had much trouble playing through the dam level, since the secret to beating it is to just switch between each of the Ninja Turtles whenever you're running low on health.
I used to beat it with one turtle.... Mainly because I had no idea that you could change them until today...
Isn't that "secret" a basic strategy of playing the game?
@@abstractdaddy1384 Exactly, but it seems that many people who play the game always tend to forget about doing that.
I feel like I could forgive it for being hard and me being just a kid, if it wasnt for the fact that there was no internet to turn to for help! You had to just keep trying in frustration till you learned the hard way lol

Turtles arcade game for the nes really had some awesome music!
I wish they actually had these stores. People would totally shop there just like Silent Bob’s store.
For most Nintendo games they are only “okay” especially compared to SNES and Genesis. The 16bit era and the people making games during it really improved on games and gameplay.
Personally, Turtles In Time is the best game, then there's Tournament Fighters
I was so excited about Tournament Fighters but never enjoyed it, tried it since and felt the same. Not saying it's bad it just wasnt for me, hopefully I'm missing something and will eventually click! I love fighting games as well, so it wasnt a genre thing.
Luis but aren’t they basically the same game?....I mean minus time travel for one of em
@@kungfuenthusiasm6592 Hyperstone Heist is, in my opinion, a lesser imitation of SNES Turtles in Time. This is not a knock on the Genesis itself, because it could've hosted a near perfect rendition of SNES Turtles in Time, but it seems that Konami was in a rush with this one. HH is fine, but SNES Turtles in Time foreva.

I’m so happy to see somebody talk this game up. It doesn’t get the love it deserves, but once you learn the ins and outs, it’s a fun, if overly difficult, game. I only ever beat it once without Game Genie, but it definitely leaves you wish a sense of accomplishment once you do beat it legitimately.
That episode inspired me to get an NES and that game because I wanted to see how bad it was and I was surprised that I actually liked it.
I always liked this game despite never having been able to beat it.
I really feel the game could give you a password between levels.
that's what the Game Genie was for :)
You know NES games that password would be 32 characters with numbers, small and big letters 😅
once you got to the Big Apple stage (with the Turtle van) you get 2 continues after all 4 turtles get caught, which was the only 'password' old school Konami ("Ultra") games had back then

I remember my Dad picking me up from school and he had gotten me this game. And everyone thought it was so cool. Took me 3-4 years to beat it, but it was the most satisfying victory ever.
Mike does make a very good point, the original NES Turtles game offers a much better single player experience than the other 2.
My dad used to have the arcade version of Turtles In Time (4 players on the same machine, crazy stuff) and that game is seriously the best in the entire franchise.
Having an arcade cabinet to yourself is pretty sick, dude. Sounds like your dad's the man.
This game was part of the bundle of games my Dad bought me in 1989 along with the NES.
Biggest flaw with the game was the lack of the temporary invulnerability after being hit. Most games let you get by an enemy after being hit but in this game they just drain your health! The cryptic effectiveness of the weapons just sucks! It really necessitates stockpiling the special weapons. The moon jumping takes a lot of practice to get used to and when jumping if you touch the ceiling you immediately lose your momentum. Game had good graphics and great music, but the game play was severely hampered.
Love that Final Fantasy poster. My favorite Nintendo game ever. Could you possibly do a review of that?
24:57 Mike's entire argument is based on memorizing everything about the game in order to just squeeze through it.
It really is a crap game, regardless of difficulty. I love the guys, but this is devil's advocate "the Star Wars prequels were actually good!" levels of revisionism here. It's like watching a case study in Stockholm Syndrome.
@@dorpth lol
I liked this game, but the "you can just walk over it" bit is bonkers. You don't teach someone that you can just walk over it by making them repeatedly walk through two entire rooms to reattempt it. You make it quick and simple to reattempt. This game's "tutorial" is just poor game design.
"Sharooken". Lol.
The ONLY NES game that you can play with ALL four turtles.
im confused... I played with all four turtles on Manhattan project
Jesus did Mike develope the game or something? He seems to have made it his purpose in life to change everyone's mind on it.
He has another purpose in life but we are not allowed to talk about that any more.
