"Rolling Sole Butt" is actually a mistranslation of "Rolling Sobat", which is an actual wrestling move. Basically you spin around 180 degrees and do a jumping back-kick to your opponent's chest or stomach.
Hakchi all the way. I think I have around 100 games on mine including this and tag team. Of course I have all the cartridges...naturally. ; ) Btw, karn can win easily with well timed kicks. Kinda repetitive, but easy and minimal grapples..
I'm thinking The Amazon was patterned after The Missing Link. He wore green and blue face paint, was billed as being from Parts Unknown, and was just an out-of-control wildman.
Yep. Huge in Hawaii too, so Japanese people were more likely to see him. Fans of wrestling in the Contiguous 48 might know him better as Pampero Firpo. If you've never saw him, I bet you still know his catch phrase: It was lifted by Randy Macho Man Savage, "OOOOOOH YEAH!"
There was also a character in Kinnikkuman ( or M.U.S.C.L.E, for those who rememeber) who looked exactly like the amazon, called Atlantis. I always assumed this was what Amazon was based on.
@@SaintStryfeArgentEngraving The Missing Link with that awesome green face paint was Dewey Robertson. Pampero Firpo was a different person. Pampero definitely had that low gravel voice that made Macho famous, Ohhhh yeaaah. The fork thing reminds me of Abdullah the Butcher
I very much enjoyed Pro Wrestling for NES back in the day. This and Tecmo World Wrestling, IMO, were two of the greatest wrestling games on the NES. When I had PS2 and the WWE SmackDown games, I used the Create A Wrestler feature to bring the NES wrestlers to life. Finally, you could have tag teams, entrances, submission holds(!) and see how the NES Superstars stacked up against the WWE Superstars. Those saves are lost to time, but I remember it being tremendous fun.
Pro Wrestling and Tecmo World Wresting were THE best wrestling games on the NES hands down. Love them both. It's coolhow you can see the basis for Fire Pro in Pro Wrestling.
The best part of Tecmo World Wrestling was that despite having zero health, you still had a chance of kicking out of a pin...Me and my friend had matches that seemed to last forever while we both had no health left! I've never come across another wrestling game like that since.
Man oh man call me a mark for nostalgia, lol. This game I can't tell u how much this take me back to my child hood. And I been a ProWrestling fan since I came out the womb so yeah truly miss these days.
The best character choice when you had a turbo controller was King Slender as you could set your turbo controller to automatic and just hold the button down and do repeated backbreakers to win. Cheating? Yes but if you wanted to win both titles, it was a fast way to get to the final match of the game.
This game was a staple rental from our local Nintendo rental place in our small town. The back body drop over and over was endless laughs and entertainment for me and my brother.
Jeremy Pinto Ice Hockey and Pro Wrestling are 2 of my favorite games of all time...played a ton of both...I would play Ice Hockey all night with friends
@@thomasthetrain3942 yea, me too. It's on my son's switch now. I tried to show it to him and I got KILLED lol. I couldn't remember how to play! And my son wasn't impressed with it lol.
WCW wrestling was a pretty solid NES game. Unlike WWF NES games, WCW concentrated on the many popular moves a wrestling match could bring. When you win a grapple, you can choose to either make an impact or a submission move using a combination of the directional pad and buttons.
We never had a NES, but our cousins did. They had a fair stack of games, and we played various, but we ALWAYS played PW. It is a perfect design, nailing the sounds, music, tempo, and, crucially, the theatrics of wrestling in the '80s (the moves, the clueless refs, outside the rings action .... the only things missing are "managers", tag teams, and props, and intros, but that was beyond this tech level. It was AMAZING that they squeezed in so much in a NES cart). This is what kids were watching (yikes) on weeknights and weekend mornings. It took no imagination at all to imagine Okerlund, Heenan, Jim Ross, or Schiavone calling the action! :D
I remember my friend had this game. I was a huge wrestling fan at the time and as soon as I saw the box art, I knew it would be awesome. Not only were the graphics impressive, but the depth of the move set was amazing compared to the WWF wrestlemania game. Great video!
The Amazon was always my favorite. I loved the outlaw choke, and how after stuffing the weapon back in his trunks he would shake his head as if telling the referee he hadn't done anything illegal.
Yeah, that part was the best. And his hands were in prayer form, shaking his head. Never got caught either. I always thought it was a bone he was using to attack with, but I guess it was a fork.
Idk bruh the late 90’s with the nwo, the return of sting, stone cold, the under taker, triple h the rock, Goldberg them days was dope too the might tie with the 80’s the story lines were crazy in the late 90’s but the characters of the mid 80’s were more colorful and unique both eras were definitely great tho
I'm 40 and I vividly remember my dad buying me this game for trying sauteed mushrooms at a restaurant lol, he told me if I tried something new he'd let me get a game and I picked this one.
Hello again from W.V.!! I still can’t wrap my mind around the fact that this was left off the NES mini roster. What a two player powerhouse this game was!
I use to just run back and forth with STARMAN, and fly into my opponent with my chest, works everytime. Eventually they just run low enough on energy to be pinned.
Poor growing up here. I went to a friend's house and he showed me this game for the first time. After playing this game I scraped and saved every single penny I could get my hands on so I could afford a NES just to get this game. Mario wouldn't last 5 minutes against Starman.
@@dfshark Nintendo should release their own wrestling game for the switch, with a bunch of characters like Mario and all 6 characters of Pro Wrestling. It would be a hit, no doubt, and it's shocking that they never did another wrestling game ever since then.
i just turned 46 and im blown away seeing this game again.... this was my favorite game growing up and you brought it back to my mind, i completely forgot about this game thank you so much for making my day a better day
Great video and awesome review. This is indeed the granddaddy of them all! Here's my two cents as a veteran of this game: Like you mentioned, if you fight at the top of the screen you can hit the CPU with an unblockable lariat/jumping knee strike as long as he follows you. But there were times when the opponent would glitch and "moonwalk" to the upper left corner of the ring. If you start running just a few pixels below the very top and he does that, you can still hit him with a clean lariat after rebounding off the right side of the ropes (you can start the attack immediately after rebounding and it will always connect when you reach him as long as you are perfectly positioned. He never detects it). Did you know that, if you grapple the opponent outside the front section of the ring, you can do the back drop and brain buster on the concrete? Kin Corn Karn... the weakest link? Not by a long shot! Not many people know it but his long, awkward looking Karate Kick does at least TWICE the damage the rolling sole butt does. A simple technique I've used for many years is: Wait for the opponent to do the rolling sole butt, and back off a couple pixels (a simple tap on the pad/controller will do) and immediately press the A button. His attack will miss you entirely, but your Karate Kick will connect. Every single time. Rinse and repeat. And to get an idea of how damaging this attack is, you can usually pin Great Puma cleanly around the 3 : 10 mark using only Karate Kicks. His Mongolian Chop is just slightly stronger than a regular punch, but if you start it right after the CPU starts a rolling sole butt, his attack will miss and yours will connect, always. If the opponent has been weakened at least, it will floor him immediately. Also, on Fighter Hayabusa's Back Brain Kick: The move does as much, if not more, damage than Kin Corn Karn's Karate Kick. When your opponent throws his rolling sole butt/Mongolian Chop at you, quickly move in a 315 degree angle (downward and diagonally) until Hayabusa is under his opponent, and immediately press the A button (the press must occur while the opponent is still airborne). If done correctly, the Kick will connect as he lands (works about 95% of the time). Rinse and repeat. It could still fail when fighting Kin Corn Karn as his Mongolian Chop is his default attack and uses a different animation. Using this method of exclusively using Back Brain Kicks, you can easily pin Great Puma cleanly around the 3 : 30 mark. I have also noticed that, when grappling with Great Puma, attempting the back drop early into the match will result in him using one of his own moves. However, he appears to be particularly vulnerable to the body slam (B button mashing), I once managed to give him 10 body slams in a row with a regular (non-turbo) controller. Did you know that the first 9 notes of the intro tune, were also used in the victory screen of Tag Team Wrestling for the NES? There's a funny glitch I used to create when playing. When a power move was used and the crowd roared, I would insert my finger into the slot and wiggle the cartridge a little. That caused the roaring sound effect to hang and you could still continue playing the rest of the match with an apeshit crowd. Once the match ended, the glitch would stop. ;) Hope my tricks and tips help you and others to further master Pro Wrestling! Cheers.
That is awesome, this whole time I thought I was the only master of fighter Hayabusas back brain kick glitch. I used to start every match with 20 or so bbk s and then grapple and destroy the opponent. Lots of fun, another glitch is just timing a regular kick against the computer. Once you get the hang of it you can take them down a few notches to start each battle.
I never got to the Great Puma, I was very close using Starman and spamming the running flying body chop but time ran out against Kin Corn Karn..it was like my 7th title Defense at the time....I even landed the somersault kick with like 10 seconds left but he still managed to beat the 3 count and got up causing the time to run out. Smh I still remember it like it was yesterday!!! Great Game!!!
Samuel Santiago I recently found my copy of this game. I played it a lot, but I did not know about Great Puma. This video just gave me a reason to play the game again because I don't think I ever won the belt!
King slender being called the cold blooded warrior jr. could be a reference to Buddy Rogers, the originator of the nature boy gimmick, Rogers being the senior and flair being the junior. Idk, just a guess.
I think "cold blooded warrior" could also be a play on Ric Flair calling himself the "Dirtiest player in the game" but I don't have a clear indication when he started saying that. Might have come afterwards.
Great video, it makes so much sense that Giant Panther was based off of Kerry Von Erich instead of Hogan which I was also saying for years. Also but you probably know this is “VWA” & “VWF” is suppose to be the NWA & WWF
In our household, we always thought Giant Panther was Ronnie Garvin, because he was hugely over at the time. The trick to being true Ron Garvin: get to where your opponent is at the second alarm, then hit him with a punch, Ron's finisher.
Toroko GAMES! That is Antonio Inoki... also if you want to see what happens when you piss him off, type Great Antonio vs Inoki (Inoki beats the hell out of a 450 lb man who was making him look bad and hit him in the neck hard
The music still makes me laugh to this day. My 2 favorite wrestlers have always been Fighter Hayabusa and Giant Panther. Especially Fighter Hayabusa mastering the Back Brain Kick was satisfying.
I know. I want one too. I just found a cool picture on the video to go along with my comments during that segment. All the other toys and figures I included are mine though.
Loved this game. I figured out that by using the NES Advatange joystick, with the turbo dialed all the way up, King Slender is unbeatable thanks to his backbreaker. You can even beat Great Puma with ease.
All those secrets & I never got to beat the game decades ago. Also, why wasn't Star Man considered for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate? Thanks for the video.
The kids on my block always insisted that King Slender was inspired by Hulk Hogan, due to the WWF promotion being extremely popular in 1987. I always leaned towards Ric Flair for his resemblance, but most of my friends didn't know who he was since WCW was not as popular in our area. WOO!!!!
I can’t thank you enough for this video. I always loved this game as a kid but couldn’t do much and always lost. Now I get to enjoy it all over again and win on the Switch. Cheers to you sir!
It was 1 of the best wrestling games...Tecmo Wrestling on the NES was really good, as well, and I did enjoy the LJN games on the SNES and Genesis back in the day (they suck now). Also, let's not forget the 2 arcade games: Wrestlefest and WWF Superstars on arcade. Those were both really fun. But if we're sticking to home console the, yeah, there wasn't a whole lot between the early NES games and then the N64 games, starting with WCW vs. NWO: World Tour. Now if you haven't played Saturday Night Slam Masters on the SNES or Genesis, I highly recommend both of those.
I am undefeated in this game. Beat hundreds of kids in my neighborhood in the 80s, and adults throughout the years since when it came out. I absolutely love this game.
I absolutely forgot about this one, but seeing the characters brought back a rush of memories! Especially the alien creature, and the guy with the star on his mask. The graphics don't hold up to what I remember, but I'm 46, so what are you gonna do? But the memories and the feeling. Wow. I loved this game!
I played this game so much as a child. Everyone loved the Amazon. He was a crowd favorite. One of the few Nintendo cartridges i still want that i dont have in my collection next to Kid Icarus and Little Nemo the Dreamaster.
This game was my addiction when I was a kid. It was absolutely amazing. Controlled well and was so fun with your homies. We use to have tournaments every weekend

Abdullah the butcher... remember the fork?

Perhaps jr is a nod to the fact that Flair wasn't the first "Nature Boy", as Buddy Rogers was the original.

Played the shit out of this game in the 80's with my best friend.
TheRicFactor it was dope how you could change the names on Tecmo Wrestling... the cutscenes during the special moves seemed way ahead of its time...
@@i__skins__i I also liked the commentary guy at the bottom calling the match. Definitely a game ahead of its time.
Tecmo was so dope
Dude I bought Tecmo World Wrestling about 6 months ago and haven't got a chance to play it. I will have to check it out.
The best part of Tecmo World Wrestling was that despite having zero health, you still had a chance of kicking out of a pin...Me and my friend had matches that seemed to last forever while we both had no health left! I've never come across another wrestling game like that since.
I actually remember all of these moves, as you say “piledriver” i thought down and a.

Man oh man call me a mark for nostalgia, lol. This game I can't tell u how much this take me back to my child hood. And I been a ProWrestling fan since I came out the womb so yeah truly miss these days.

Thanks so much Smash!
The title song and crowd noise were also in Ice Hockey.

I agree. So many characters. Great graphics. So many moves.
ITS DOOMSDAY FOR THE SKULL!!
WCW wrestling was a pretty solid NES game. Unlike WWF NES games, WCW concentrated on the many popular moves a wrestling match could bring. When you win a grapple, you can choose to either make an impact or a submission move using a combination of the directional pad and buttons.
WCW wrestling was a notch better than Pro Wrestling
Sometimes the box art would disappoint
King Slender. 3 backbreakers. Brain buster. Piledriver. 3 count
I'm 47, I use 2 ditch school me and my cousins and go play this at the mexican homie Freddy house...good ol days.

I can't even put into words how much I lived for this game.....Great video.
Great video and awesome review. This is indeed the granddaddy of them all! Here's my two cents as a veteran of this game:
Like you mentioned, if you fight at the top of the screen you can hit the CPU with an unblockable lariat/jumping knee strike as long as he follows you.
Once the match ended, the glitch would stop. ;)
Hope my tricks and tips help you and others to further master Pro Wrestling! Cheers.
Nice!
