- WCW World Championship Wrestling NES Secrets and History | Generation Gap Gaming - By the spring of 1990, the NES was no stranger to wrestling games, with many fans touting both Nintendo’s Pro Wrestling and Tecmo World Wrestling as the top two wrestling titles ever released on the system. And while I agree with that statement, real life wrestling fans in this era including myself, were still waiting on an NES game that successfully blended the actual larger than life stars we watched on television with our beloved Nintendo consoles.
We know that high and mighty promotion to the North called the WWF had already released Wrestlemania for the NES in January of 1989, but it’s a fair argument that this game didn’t meet its full potential.
But if you were from the South or happened to have the TBS superstation growing up, you were probably just as much of a fan of World Championship Wrestling and its iconic wrestlers like Ric Flair, Sting, and of course the Road Warriors.
The team at WCW finally decided to enter the video game universe when World Championship Wrestling released on the NES in April of 1990 and featured many of the critical elements that make pro wrestling appealing to its fanbase.
Now rest assured that we will discuss the strategies and tips needed to help you succeed in this game, but no development story behind a Southern wrasslin promotion’s video game would be complete without a little backstage drama, politics, and croneyism that greatly influenced the final product that ended up in our living rooms. And I can’t wait to share all the secrets and history here with you now so let’s get started! #WCW #NES #ProWrestling #WorldChampionshipWrestling #80s

🔥It would mean a lot to me if you shared this video with your gaming and wrestling buddies.🔥Wooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!
Man oh man, did u pick a good one today Tyler my friend... I already found what I had to find, now I'm gonna go back and watch this whole video for enjoyment and ill probably have an essay of comments, because I am a HUGE wrestling fan, and 6:05 on Saturday nights was one of my favorite times of the week as a kid.... Lord Steven Regal was probably my favorite back then besides Flair.... so hang tight and grt ready for a big read lol, cuz I am an encyclopedia of wrestling knowledge @!!
U had me at the flame emoji
Totally will dude! Awesome video, and makes me want to play it. Such a well crafted video Tyler, A+ for sure
Oh hell yea!! And that's the bottom line because GenerationGapGaming said so...
@@masterrserch3971thanks man. Looking forward to you dropping some knowledge.
HUGE pop for the WCW mic! 😂 I never realized this was a reskin of the Famicom game.
I love that mic too Eric. Found it on eBay recently.
The mic was great.
Man I got a lot of nostalgia out of this. I had those WCW trading cards.
Loved this game! My cousins and I used to do tournaments to see who was the best. Every weekend we would come up with more crazy championship names. When we got up to universal championship, my cousin Bob said that was ridiculous. “Only a 5 year old would name their belt the Universal Championship “
I see what you did there with the Universal Championship lol. Glad you enjoyed this game too David. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season.
LOVE this game! I fondly remember getting this game in a trade with a friend as a kid. I played it so much! Definitely a game that takes some patience to learn, but once you put in the time and figure it out it's a blast! Easily one of my favorite early wrestling games. Great video once again!
I completely agree Dan. Definitely a sleeper wrestling title for the NES. Hope everything is going well with your recovery man. Hope you and the family have a wonderful holiday season.
@@GenerationGapGaming dan your the man. How ya been bud
Dan how you been amigo. Haven't talked since the video game years
yo merry christmas pixel Dan
Wow. Two of my favorite RUclipsrs interacting in one place.
Time flies while watching your videos, great stuff. 9:34 mullet boy in the left upper corner, standing in the crowd admiring the action.
You found him Daniel! Nice eye because this wasn't an easy one. Hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas.
Loved this game as a kid. Sting was my favorite, I had a haircut like his. One of my buddies older brothers would call me the stinger.
Awesome you had Sting's haircut! Way cooler than my mullet lol
This is the greatest WCW game for the NES in the history of our great sport!
To me it was the best wrestling game on the NES, easily beating any of the WWF offerings.
Man Roadwarrior Animal passed away? I loved watching these guys as kid growing up. Demolition was another favorite of mine. I know these guys have it very rough after they retire from wrestling. I wish all of them well. They made my childhood very entertaining.
Yes unfortunately Road Warrior Animal passed away. Now both he and Hawk are together again at least RIP.
I loved Demolition too. Ax and Smash were awesome!!!! Hope you have a Merry Christmas 🎄
He did. He's now with his brother hawk. What a rush and so on..
@@GenerationGapGaming the 3 man switch was epic at the time. here comes the axer and here comes the smasher and the song goes in a similar vane..
Watching this vid was like watching an old buddy talk about wrasslin' and video games. Thank you.
Awesome man! I could talk about old school wrestling all day. Merry Christmas 🎄
I still own this cartridge from my childhood. This was actually my favorite NES wrestling game. I know it's not the best game, but I enjoy it.
Very awesome that you still have your original. That's the magic man!
Old school wrestling and old school video games in the same video?!!! I'm in Heaven!
I know right! The best of both worlds for me too
Modern wrestling is kind of lame. Girls took it over to much now.
They reached beyond their target demographic: as a young girl I adored the whole world of wrestling! I always thought Road Warriors looked wicked.
My brother, cousin, and I would often reenact our favorite moves and pile-drive each other into random furniture.
Those action figures are so awesome! Another fantastic video, Tyler. Always such thorough research.
Ha where were you when I was growing up?? Here in australia even some of the boys thought my brother and I were strange for loving wrestling. Anytime my brother would get bullied he would Hulk up shake his head etc. What a great time!!!
Now that is awesome. I definitely didn't know many girl fans in my friends and family. Makes me happy that you enjoyed the video. Merry Christmas!
@@retrorystergaming577 Hulk Hogan was by far my favorite wrestler! I even enjoyed the Saturday morning cartoon Hulk Hogan’s Rockin’ Wrestling.
I know the fondness for “rasslin” carries a certain stigma, but I don’t mind. ;)
@@GenerationGapGaming Thanks! Merry Christmas to you and your family as well! I told my niece if she leaves something for Santa to trade the milk n cookies for a mask and latex gloves.
@@7thangelad586 rasslin was a massive part of my upbringing Hulk Hogan was a huge influence of my life. The prayers the training the vitamins not selling out to the million dollar man all that good stuff was exactly what growing Midas needed
I'm not ashamed to admit I use the NES Max either! Great video! Loved it. Thank you.
Always a pleasure my man 🙏. You gotta have the NES max for this one lol
I grew up in the south, so WCW was way more popular than WWF, but i could never get a handle on any of the WCW games. I wish I'd had this video when I was growing up!!
Awesome video, my dude! Thanks for sharing with us!
It is always my pleasure to make these videos. I am just happy that you enjoy them. This game does have a bit of a learning curve lol. Merry Christmas!
I grew up north. I liked wcw a little better than wwf. My favorite promotion was ecw. It was hard to find back in the day.
I love this game.
I still have this game.
I still play this game!!!
Yes Cory! I obviously still love and play it too. Merry Christmas 🎄
I remember this game. I got it for my 5th birthday. I remember wondering why Eddie Gilbert and Steve Williams were in it. And I also remember being confused about Ric Flair. He didn’t do stuff in the game like he did on tv. I can vouch for this man’s assessment.
Yes Shane! Flair did not feel like himself in this game and now we know why lol. Merry Christmas 🎄
@@GenerationGapGaming merry Christmas to you as well
My mid-80's summers were filled with this game. I loved every bit of it and the great times me and my cousin had playing ti. Thanks Tyler.
Was it cool to travel to the future? This game came out in 1990. What's the future like if you still do? If Biden is still president in 2027 then I'm moving to Jamaica mon!
The only wrestling game I played was pro wrestling. It was really good too.
The only wrestling game I played was pro wrestling. It was really good too.
To be the man, you gotta beat the game! Wooooooo!!!
Wow! What a missed opportunity for the game's tagline.
Stylin' and high flyin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved this game as a kid. It’s the first great Pro Wrestling game, there’s a large move set that you can choose from, plus the way the the guys wrestle is great. The power moves and finishers are all awesomely executed and look like they are beating the hell out of each other.
I loved watching the NWA/WCW as a kid in the 80s. I was lucky because I had cable, so I was able to watch WWF Saturday Mornings, NWA/WCW Saturday and Sunday afternoons, the AWA Friday Nights, and WCCW (World Class Championship Wrestling, owned by and featuring the Von Erichs, who’s feud with the Fabulous Freebirds in the early-mid 80s was legendary).
Wow Mark! You had all the best promotions available. Very awesome!!! Where I lived, we only had WWF and WCW which was awesome but having AWA and WCCW would have been great too. Happy holidays man!
@@GenerationGapGaming I was definitely spoiled when it came to 80s wrestling. Lucky enough to see a lot of the greats. Happy Holidays to you as well!
Wow, you had wrestling everyday of the week back then! One mention of the Freebirds and I'm singing "Badstreet Atlanta GA, Baddest street in the whole USA!" again. 80s NWA had its ups and downs, but the wrestling and promos led to classic moments. Ric flair: "The Horsemen, Tony, have all the titles in this sport! The Diamond ring...wearing! Rolex wearing, Limousine riding, jet flying, kiss stealing, wheeling dealing, son of a gun is ready for Starrcade! Whooooo!"
Man I remember watching “Grampas Super Scary Saturday’s” then Right after WCW !!! And this game was freaking AWESOME 😎
“Like” 54 is from me keep it up 👍🏼 bud
Well I appreciate that like my friend🙏. Never heard of that one show that came on after WCW. I will have to look into that.
This is one of the best wrestling games on nes I love it. From getting to pick your moves to finishes if only the roster was larger or a sequel had been made with an updated roster
A sequel would have been awesome Dustin. Hope you have a Merry Christmas 🎄
Great video! Nice to see a perspective from a WCW fan! Thanks for posting!
Thanks Marty and it was my pleasure to make the video. Merry Christmas!
@@GenerationGapGaming Your welcome and a Merry Christmas to you and your family!
I remember that not only does that WCW Master look like Andre The Giant in his Giant Machine costume, but the theme music is also Andre's entrance theme when he wrestled in New Japan against guys like Tatsumi Fujimani, Seiji Sakaguchi and Antonio Inoki. I didn't realize this until watching more Andre matches recently, so great video.
My all time favorite wrassling game ever!!! I still have and play it, especially this year. The kids have loved playing all my old school systems.
Sweet! Really glad your kids join in too. Hope you all have a Merry Christmas 🎄
Subbed!!!👍👍👍
I like the pop up facts and trivia for this episode. Will they be on future videos?
That's the plan! Thanks for the feedback
@@GenerationGapGaming If I could give a little feedback on it I enjoy the little fun facts, but it's hard to read them and listen to the video. Yes I know I can pause the video but I feel that it hurts the flow of the video. Just my own two cents. Maybe I'm in the minority here. Either way I'll definitely watch regardless.
@@TheGrowlerCatB2BGame I appreciate the feedback. I was concerned about that too. I need to try to find a way to make it work the best.
Agree with both of these folks; I liked the idea, but had a hard time parsing both the pop-up and the voice-over. I guess it just needs some tweaking 😊
@@GenerationGapGaming maybe look back at how VH1 did their "Pop Up Videos." Quick facts, less is more kinda thing. Regardless, awesome video. Thanks for digging into all the small details and history, very informative👍

@@GenerationGapGaming It was! Merry Christmas to you and your family too!
One can tell the amount of work you put into your videos. Thank you for the quality content. It is appreciated.
I appreciate the kind feedback. It always encourages me to keep doing more. I try to make content that makes people happy to see so thank you so much. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season!
I really appreciate the level of effort and thought you put into your videos. Entertaining and informative! Thank you!
And I really appreciate you taking time to share the kind feedback. I try my best to make the videos worth your time. I hope you and yours have a great holiday season.
Such a great video! Mullet boy is all over this thing! Lol I visibly can remember the first time I saw Ricky the Dragon Steamboat spitting fire on the WWF while at my Grandparents house. I was hooked ever since
Mullet boy was pretty frequent during this one lol. That dragon and fire gimmick was definitely gold for the kids back then. Great stuff. Hope you have a great holiday season Samuel.
This and Tecmo Wrestling were definitely my favorite 2 wrestling games as a kid. This probably edges out Tecmo Wrestling because it has real wrestlers opposed to the generic wrestlers on Tecmo Wrestling. Although the gameplay on Tecmo Wrestling was great. Also, if I'm not mistaken Tecmo Wrestling was the 1st wrestling game to have an announcer, although it was text only. Still very cool at the time.
Awesome that you mentioned the reference to Andre as the Giant Machine for WCW Master.
Thanks Jason. I thought it was a clever way for them to hide Andre's face.
Thank you for taking me back! I love and still have this game. Time to revisit!... also, you just made another subscriber!. Great video!
Thank you Mike 🙏 and welcome to G3 budd!
Seeing this at this particular time of year reminds me of the nostalgia from 30 plus years ago and seeing that the WCW is in a video game!!! How amazing it was to be a kid with such excitement and then to catch those feels again at the age of 40! Great video
Loving this episode. Great video as always. Thank you 😁
Thank you for reminding me about this game! Really fun and interesting vid as well.
Paul Heyman was the voice of the intro !! Holy crap my mind is blown. I never knew that, but that auto is burned into my mind.
I was born in 1990 and this is one of the first wrestling games i ever had. Loved this game.
Great video
This is my first venture to your channel, having owned this game as a kid.
It will not be the last, this is amazing! What a deep dive. Subscribed!
Great to have you here Jason and thanks for the kind words. Welcome to G3!

Glad to hear that my dude. You stay safe and have a Merry Christmas 🎄
I want that sting figure lol also rest in peace animal
Animal was taken far too soon. I really hate it for his family.
I used to have that one when I was a kid. It's pretty pricy on ebay today, unfortunately.
I have that sting figure somewhere in storage... I remember my dad once painted my lex Luger figure to look like the ultimate warrior .. good times
I remember playing this a lot when I was a kid. This game was really fun!
Totally agree Thomas. Hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas 🎄
Nobody I knew back in the 80s had this game. I would of played it a lot.
Great Episode as always. I watched mostly WWF growing up. My cousin did have some of the large rubber figures from WCW and I defiantly remember the road warriors. I had them in their smaller action figure size. I agree with using them as marketing for the NES game. It really makes it stand out
Thanks Russ! The Road Warriors were definitely over during this time. Oddly enough just a couple of months after this game released, they jumped to WWF as the Legion of Doom.
This was my favorite NES wrestling game and I think I had them all. I definitely agree a turbo controller is a mist for this game and countout victories are the fastest way to get to the master.
Sweet! Sounds like we hold a lot it common with our strategies. Hope you have a Merry Christmas 🎄
Love your content and format, thank you very much for the effort!! :)
That WCW mic is 🔥
I want one!
@cwr2 doot doot doot
I know right? I couldn't resist. Found it on ebay a while back.
@@GenerationGapGaming your lucky I didn't see it first brotha! Lol
Love it!
Love the game, the video, and the WCW love! I still miss the WCW and hate that they never got another really great game after WCW/nWo Revenge for the N64. Bless their hearts, they tried though.
Thanks for this video, Tyler!
You are most welcome my man. I hated that the 64 era was their peak too. I sure did love those 64 games though.
Funny, because Doc and Gilbert were my favorites at the time. Since I grew up watching them in the WCCW alongside the Von Erichs, I really enjoyed playing as them in the game. Still wish they would have added the Midnight Express. I don't think they've ever been in video game. They were my personal all time favorite tag team.
The Midnights would have been a great addition. They are always so underrated. I really didn't like putting a negative spin on Doc and Eddie's inclusion in the game, just saying that they just weren't many cup of tea at that time. I probably would feel differently if I were a few years older then. Im glad you enjoyed having them on there though and I appreciate your feedback.
Herd didn't like the Midnights and the feeling was mutual when contract negotiations came up.
@@unlimitedrabbit Oh, I'm very aware of the situation there. Cornette could write a book about just that. Shame he's such a salty old bastard these days. Loved to hate him back in the day. Also would have loved seeing Arn and Tully in the game, but I guess they were in their ill-fated WWF run at that time.
I love the way you present your videos. Always a nice mix of game play and strategy but also taking time to discuss the history behind the game. It makes your channel unique. Great job!
Thank you so much for the kind feedback 🙏. It really helps me focus on how to present future videos. Merry Christmas 🎄
I appreciate your perspective and the love you have for WCW from back then. I recognize it because buying a turbo controller for one game is something I would do if it helped my experience playing as the Ultimate Warrior.
I'm ready for this!
Yes! Hope you enjoyed it dude
Dude, I love your videos. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much Matthew. It is my pleasure to make them. Happy holidays!
Very cool episode. I tried my hand at a few of these as a kid, but wrestling was one sport that never really latched onto me as far as video games go.
Gotta say, though, I'm very impressed with the quality of that audio sample at 7:46. For an NES game, that's very crisp.
The voicework on this game definitely caught me by surprise too. Really happy you enjoyed the episode!
I love this channel, your content is one of a kind man. I happen to own this game. I don't know how it ended up in my collection but it's there. It's one of those games that was difficult to get to work and once it read, boy was it quite a tough game, good for its time. Wish The Midnight Express were on there and Dusty Rhodes too. Thanks for posting and keep up the good work!!!
Thanks for the kind words Ace 🙏. I wished Dusty and the Midnights could have been a part of it too. Hope you have a Merry Christmas 🎄
@@GenerationGapGaming Thanks man Happy Holidays to you and your family too!⛄
Got this game for Christmas 1990, and still have it. Great to see a vid about it!
Sounds like a great Christmas Jimmy! Glad you liked the video man. Hope you have a great Christmas this year too.
@@GenerationGapGaming Thanks man! Same to you and yours!
Beautiful video! I played a lot of the games that you showed stacked on the NES in the first shot, but never WCW. I wish I had known about it back then, it looks awesome. I was a super pro wrestling fan as a kid, and would set up full cards and play them via the board game Superstar Pro Wrestling. This was back in 1984, so I was exactly in the 11 year old boy demographic that Jim Hurd was going for. He knew what he was doing!
Anyway, thanks for the amazing video! Even though I grew up in New York City, I would watch every cable station wrestling show I could so I could see all the stars of the different divisions that I would learn about through magazines like Pro Wrestling Illustrated, The Wrestler and the other Victory Sports magazines. So I knew all the Georgia, Florida and other Wrestling associations. even though I was a Yankee!
Your videos are incredible, thanks for putting so much time and effort into them!
Sounds like you had great knowledge and access to so much wrestling growing up Sean. Good stuff buddy. Thanks for the kind words about the videos. Means a lot to me 🙏. Merry Christmas 🎄
I grew up in Philly, so we watched ECW and other small wrestling groups.
Awesome Mike! ......or Mike Awesome??? I didn't get to experience ECW much where I was from, but from what I've learned online as an adult about the promotion it seemed really cool. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season Mike!
@@GenerationGapGaming I grew up watching NBA Basketball in the 90's only until Michael Jordan retired in 1999 is when i got into wrestling but still watch basketball because of Kobe who was the next MJ
ECW kicked ass. WWF stole a lot of stuff from them. During the attitude era.
Really great video. I appreciate the background info regarding the wrestling industry at the time and the facts which help build up a broad picture of the climate the game came from. You obviously have a lot of knowledge of wrestling history and are more qualified than most who review wrestling games.
Great video and much information! Thanks for making it. I had it and distinctly remember how the final wrestler you faced looked like Andre The Giant with a mask lol. Hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas and Lord bless and watch over you all this New Years!
Thank you Quentin 🙏. Hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas as well. You were spot on with Andre lol
I always enjoy your videos. Triple G videos always give me that nostalgic feeling, taking me back to the enjoyment of being a kid and having lots of fun playing video games. I was also a Mid Atlantic Wrestling fan as a kid. Growing up in Birmingham Alabama, we could get Mid Atlantic on channel 4 or 5 but way past my bedtime as a kid. We all know that the first WCW game that was amazing was SuperBrawl in 94 for the SNES!
Thank you John! I had Sega during the 16 bit era so I didn't get a chance to play SuperBrawl. I came across it a few times researching this video. I really need to find a copy because it does sound fun. Hope you have a Merry Christmas 🎄
@@GenerationGapGaming Thank you for responding! Merry Christmas to you as well, not many people wishing that to one another these days. Thank you. You definitely have to get a copy of SuperBrawl, I'd love to see your review of it. Also, awesome Animal costume when you were younger. I went as the Rock one year, but it was for an adult Halloween party. As a kid I was usually Frankinstein's monster or the Incredible Hulk, lol.
Man I absolutely love this channel. Everytime you drop a new video, I stop what I'm doing and check it out. Makes me feel like a kid again, and I can relate since we grew up in the same time period
same here. We're al about the same age (born in 1978) so i got a good dose of classic wrestling like this, older wrestilng through the videos my dad and older brother would rent, and then of course the greatest age in wrestling, the attitude era...and we were lucky enough to be right in that perfect time to grow up without cell phones and the internet, and playing outside all day, only coming home to eat and run back out, but then old AND young enough to experience the internet and all it's glory...i'll tell ya... if i were growing up now, and having access to all the, let's just say, ADULT material at your fingertips on the internet, id be a much MUCH different person lol
the nostalgia is strong that's for sure!!
That's what it's all about man. I always enjoy hearing from you too. Hope you have a Merry Christmas.
As a kid in the 8-11 demo watching NWA/WCW at the time I was a big Skyscrapers mark, they would have appealed to me more than Eddie Gilbert and Kevin Sullivan. I say that only from an 80s kid perspective, not mad at the roster looking back at it today
Great as always. Thank you for the content.
You are most welcome 🙏. Merry Christmas 🎄
@@GenerationGapGaming Merry Christmas!
The learning curve in this one is brutal. Every wrestler has their own pattern for kicking. It legitimately took me about 20 minutes to beat the first opponent. Once you get past that, it's one of the best wrestling games on the NES. It's head and shoulders above the WWF games. The ability to perform Sting's scorpion death lock is just so satisfying.
You speak the truth man. I feel that first match with Michael Hayes is a beast. No learning curve at all especially without a turbo controller. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season.

Good job with the pop ups. Its something unique and cool to your vids. I had those Lex and Sting figures as a kid too. I loved WCW in the mid to late 90s, and I remember getting this game from a second-hand game store or garage sale or something. I thought it was excellent. I didn’t have a manual so I was stoked when I figured out how to do finishing moves. You mentioned the screen shaking during submission holds. I recall it being amped up with an even louder sound and more shaking for submission finishers like Sting’s scorpion death lock. Made it feel like it was REALLY hurting.

This video is brought to you by SquareSpace! Just kidding lol. Thanks for the kind comment man. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season.
Mike Rotunda was the best on here for me!!! Loved this game especially the tag team competition with the standings and all. This game was pretty deep for a Nintendo game looking back
Your voice, n obvious true fandom.of the games you cover is perfection. One of the best ove ever come across. Have you ever played blaster master, or golden axe legend? They seem like games u could talk about n make great videos on.
Thank you Kurt 🙏. Yes I've played them both. Would be great topics some day. Thanks for the suggestions.

Glad you were wanting this game to be covered Eric! Thanks for the feedback. Hope you have a Merry Christmas!
This was my favorite wrestling game as kid by far. I had no idea it was a re-skin of a famicon game. That makes it kind of like Mario 2 in a way. WCW the underdog. Wrestling company, and Mario 2 the underrated Mario sequel.
