- Kung Fu NES Secrets and History | Generation Gap Gaming - I want you to think of your top 5 NES launch titles you had when you were a kid? Of course you’d immediately name classics like Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, or Excitebike, but I’d be willing to bet that Kung Fu made your list too because I can’t think of a single person I knew that had an NES growing up that didn’t own this game. Kung Fu is one of the true pioneers of the beat em up genre. The story behind its development and inclusion in the NES library is quite compelling and I can’t wait to share all the secrets and history you need to become a Kung Fu NES master. Let’s get started. #KungFu #NES #Nintendo #RetroForce

Now....I HAVE THE POWER....because of your Tips & Tricks. Can’t wait to find out the next batch of secrets.
GenerationGapGaming they should make a rom hack of this but it’s Kung fu pands
very sneaky lol
My oldest sister who passed away this yr, bought this game for me when I was about 11 yrs old. Just hearing you explaining this and watching you playing it makes me want to pull my NES out of my closet! Lol! I grew up on Nintendo! So this game along with Mega Man, Double Dragon, Ninja Gaiden, Contra, Super Mario Brothers, and Tecmo Bowl games will always have a special place in my heart! 👍
If you still have it, I would highly recommend it. I went to my parents house and dug my old consoles out of the attic a few years ago. I've got them all set up in my basement now and I play them regularly. I really enjoy them but my kids want nothing to do with them LOL
Sorry about your sister
@@richdiscoveries Thank you for your condolences..I really appreciate that! It's been hard dealing with it. So I'm just taking it one day at a time...I guess I should hook up my Nintendo too! 👍
@@wacojohnnydean1777 that's all you can do, one day at a time. Try to spend as much time with family, and just try to support each other.
Without getting into long stories and details, I went through a similar situation years back. I tried to be the strong one, the one to be there to support my family. Turned out that by me being there for them and supporting them, they end up supporting me much more than I ever realized.
God bless my friend
@@richdiscoveries Yes I hear you and thank you for that advice. May God bless you as well and take care...
Amazing nostalgic connection you have with your sister that had passed. Very cool
When I was in elementary school, I told people i had a girlfriend named Sylvia, and I had to honestly use my karate to rescue her, people soaked it up. I miss being a kid
I woulda been right behind you bro humming out the theme song
ok Ellis; or should I say Thomas
Using "karate" in "Kung-Fu", yes being a kid was a fun time.
We used to call her saliva 🤣
I remember playing Kung Fu at the arcade before it came out on the NES.
Yeah I played it at my local 7-Eleven all the time
Same. Very hard though. At least at the time.
Same here. After losing lots of coins for this game in the arcade, I automatically purchased this game together with NES
I never found a cabinet when i was a kid, but I beat this game left and right like it owed me two smokes on NES.
I’m 36 and this was one of my favorite games of all time growing up, I kno one thing any Kung-Fu head can feel me on, whenever u hear one word it reminds u of this game... “CUP, CUP, CUP, CUP, CUP!!” Lol in elementary school for 2 whole years we ran around punching each other yellin CUP cuz of this game!! Ohhh the memories!
You can also kick and punch the snake and dragon pods before they hit the ground. You can sweep the pods at the exact moment they hit the ground as well. Confetti pods can be jump kicked.
I never had a NES but I used to play this in the arcade starting in '84. This has always been one of my favorites and it ate many of my quarters.
Kung fu was the first game I ever bought as a kid with my own money that I earned
That is awesome Dan! You will never forget that feeling.
Dan Bates - What did bj’s go for back then?
@@NeonKnight83 I'm sorry you're having that bad of a day that you felt the need to insult someone you've never met. Try not to waste you life living in the negative. Life's too short for that.
@@GenerationGapGaming Keep up the great work, love your videos
+Dan Bates
Mine was "Bionic Commando." :)
To do a makeshift spin kick, hit the kick button, and immediately reverse direction with the d pad. Useful for when you get surrounded.
Excite bike and Kung Fu were the absolute shit at the time. Create your own motocross tracks? In 1985? Hells yes.
One of the greats for sure!
I first read your comment as "...excitebike was shit" and it hurt me hahahah. Then I saw the right wording and it was the whole opposite vibe hahahahHa.
I got a nes last year, from a yard sale, that seems so new and the directions/paperwork were even still in sealed wrap!!! Excitebike was one of the first 2 games I made sure to get again. Still hooked!
My 9 y.o. Picked up the controller, and demolished Excite Bike on the NES Classic plug and play. Today’s kids are better at games than we were.
I wish we all had time machines and could go back in time and play! Excitebike is Still one of my favorites, popping wheelies, overheatin lol
@@teezwilliams22 There is a Linux game that is kinda a clone to Excitebike call Mad Skills Motorcross. www.penguspy.com/mad-skills-motocross/ better graphic of course. It's a fun game as the original NES Excitebike.
One of my first games. Always loved it. One of those games where the execution of the gameplay made it a timeless classic
In the 80's, when I was 11 or 12, my wonderful Grandma took me to Malibu Grand Prix where there was an arcade inside and Kung Fu master was my favorite game. She stood there the entire time and watched me beat in on one quarter. One of the best memories I have of her.
Love this game so much. So many great memories playing this game with my brothers and friends. You did an amazing job with video! Thank you
Yes I had this game. 👊 Double dragon 2 is my all time favourite nes game.
gotta love them retro classics!
I got NES and it came with Duck Hunt. My Dad let me pick 2 more games and choose Maro Bros and Kung FU!! In 1985.
That must of been before Mario Duck Hunt combo cartridge.
Sherlock BONES I guess so. It was so long ago. I still remember the day we went Toy’s R Us to get it!
You had a great launch day!
Mario and duck hunt was always bundled.
@@scuppo nope. First set had Gyromite and Duck Hunt. Later bundles included Super Mario/Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet, Super Mario 3, and even Zelda II. There were multiple bundles through the years.
I beat Kung Fu 5 times without continuing. My score was around 670K when my game ended. It was a record at the time many years ago but now the high score is in the millions.
Really? That doesn't sound that impressive as my own record as a kid was 13 consecutive times beating the game. I knew plenty of ppl who could beat it more than 5 times.
Same here, 5 times without a single death. No one has gone beyond that, don’t believe the lies.
@@corrado LOL right.
Yo le borrè el marcador...no alcanzan los dígitos para el millon y se reinicia el contador de puntos.
I remember that too 5 times and the game ends.
Damn, I love Kung Fu!! In fact, I still bust it out and play it, from time to time. Awesome video, brutha!! 👍
Thanks so much Calvin! Such a great pick up and play game to escape for a few minutes.
I can remember it being in a 7-Elevenin the 80s across the street from my school I go every day and spend all my money on that dang game LOL
Yup, I also whip it out and play with it ever so often.
Damn me too! lol I'm 44 and have my game/toy room and still pop in this game every so often and it is ALWAYS FUN and I'll beat it 2 or 3 times and I'll be relaxed. My Kung Fu Cart is very clean and not dusty at all. I make sure to give those classics lots of love. Hell yeah!
@@hektorlinko that's awesome sir. I remember as a kid was at my friends house we played king fu and were so excited to fight Mr. X. WITH HIS laughs "WA ha ha ha ha...."
Mr. X always reminded me of Patrick Swayze as a child.
I owned Kung Fu as a kid too and loved it. I was also a huge fan of Kung Fu Master in the arcade before NES Kung Fu was released. I honestly loved both games equally! Amazing job on this video, you covered everything so well and your love for classic gaming comes across in all of your videos. Keep up the great work and just know that your hard work and dedication is appreciated and respected!
Kung fu on the nes is my childhood best Nintendo games to this day
I liked 10 yrd fight. My youth group building at church had a free to play 10 yard fight arcade machine so we could be the “cool” church in town, and I showed up early every Wednesday night to play.
Now if I had the arcade version that would be pretty cool lol.
Brennan Huff my church had an arcade too it was amazing. I loved terminator pinball the teenagers would flock around street fighter an MK and I would be the only kid playing Galaga haha man that place was lit
Stephen Amador dang, those are some real deal arcade games. I went to the wrong church. That’s awesome
LOVE your channel. I'm 40, so I grew up playing all these games. Christmas 1985 I got my NES and Kung Fu was 1 of the 1st games I had.
This was basically the beginning of video games for me. 5 years old, first game ever. Still remember the music of the game and eating pretzels and drinking Pepsi while playing. Special game for me always.
1.Tecmo Super Bowl
2. Mike Tyson's Punch Out
3. Mario Bros 3
4. Contra
5. Ninja Gaiden II
But yea, you are right. I did own Kung Fu.
no Paper Boy?
@@josephbiondi8427 definitely not
1984 or 85 (cant remember🤷🏾♂️) around 10 years old.
I got the NES
Accessories:
1. Gun
2. Mini Robot
Games with system
1. Gyromite
2. Duck hunt
3. Kung fu
My favorite NES games back in the day: Super Mario Bros., Excite Bike, Contra, Ninja Gaiden, Tecmo Bowl......good times
Great video as always! Got hooked from the 1st video, I watched yesterday, about Punchout. You do a great job Doug! Keep up the great work and I look forward to watching more of your videos.
That damn wizard and his laugh still haunt me “Ah-heh-heh-heh-heh-ha...”
Game over, return of Ganon
Yeah his was the most dastardly lol
Hahah yup it was more “Ah-HAh-Hahah “ tho lol
Kung ku is my favorite NES games on my top 100 list
Dude that is awesome! For a launch title it is pretty amazing.
@@GenerationGapGaming Indeed homie and great review tho
Thank you for making this video. I spent many quarters at the arcade playing Kung Fu. Could never beat Mr. X but man it was fun trying.
Oh mate I remember this game like it was yesterday! Had an absolute blast playing it with my sis, had no idea there were so many secrets to it though! Makes it even better!! Great video mate!
Big like and Kung Fu and karate Champ are my favorite from the nes days
Both of those are great games man!
I liked the arcade release of Karate Champ with th duel joystick and no buttons. Was really the first game that used joystick patterns for special moves
@A dudes thoughts I have karate Champ on the PS4 I paid $7.99 and also galaga and double dragon
@bee boo I'm a hardcore gamer karate Champ was one of my favorites arcades from the 80's
You do an excellent job putting together your presentations. Very informative and entertaining. I'm looking forward to seeing your channel subscribers continue to grow. You definitely deserve it.
Joe Boyko agreed
Joe you don't know how much that means to me man. I work hard to present the best video I can for you.
@@GenerationGapGaming yes sir I wanted to echo that. It's just stellar quality production and balance of info and entertainment. I could feel like I was watching TV production. Also loved the historical references which painted the story, especially since I grew up with this game as a kid. So great guys. I hope you guys flourish. 👏
I literally had hundreds of NES games growing up unfortunately this wasn't one of them, and only had the chance of playing this game once at a friend's house.. watching this video makes me want to search the net for a copy of this... awesome video! 👍
Kung Fu was the first game we purchased for our NES the day we bought our console. Outside of the Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt cartridge that came with it of course. Still have it in my collection. A true classic.
I can't believe that I never saw the connection with The Game of Death. Awesome video!!!
You should do a video on Yie Ar Kung-Fu, man I use to love that game.
I agree. I loved it too
Yep, classic arcade
Not sure I am aware of that one?
Oh that one is tough, I played the hell out of it too :P (And I sucked at it...)
@@GenerationGapGaming The NES game is forgettable but the arcade version is a classic. I'd call it influential too.
Man I'm so glad you covered this! I'm working through the game now and knew right where to go for all the infos 😃👍
Your videos are awesome man!
Binging them all since yesterday!
This guy hasn’t made it to Super Smash bothers?
The confetti ball thing did
@@subtledemisefox truth!
no kidding, it's a no brainer.
I was born 1980, spent most of youth playing the games you review .Wonderful channel, thank you so much
I always pretend that Mr x is Chuck Norris...he looks like a young chuck 🤔😆. Great video and learned something new as always.
What happens when you pretend that Mr X is Chuck Norris?
DM me so we can talk about MR X
Dude you are right he does look like a young Chuck Norris. I never put that together.
@@GenerationGapGaming He really does right!
What a great show!! I subscribed within two minutes of this video. Can’t wait to dive into this channel.
another well produced, fun and informative video!! i had this game as a kid so it brought back a lot of good memories!! thanks again!!
You are welcome Chad. Thanks for the kind words.
Kung fu was my first nes game, great game and pretty underrated.
I was one of my first too man! I completely agree.
The arcade was way harder than the NES version.. it threw me off!
yes, and that little trick of just low kicking mister x would not work in the arcade game as he would counter with a jump kick. I found it easier to beat him in the arcade by timing him with the body punches.
Arcade versions are typically harder. That's how they make money
Remember when I was young, I played this game so much that I could clear the game without looking, just listening to the sound and music.
That "VIGILANTE " is totally a dream image of a 'Guardian Angel'
This was hands down my favorite NES game. Super Mario bros 3 an obvious 2nd place followed by Legend of Zelda 2 (gold cartridge).
Leo Saldana Legend of Zelda 👍👍👍😎 I loved it.
Yeah Zelda gold cartridge was so classic.
I know you covered Friday the 13th in depth but will you ever make a video on Nightmare on Elm Street on NES?
Yes definitely.....Maybe a halloween episode this year.
@@GenerationGapGaming That will be a fun video as well to see!
Nightmare on Elm St is vastly superior and one of the best multiplayer games for the nes
I've gotten on this kick where I'm buying old gaming systems. I started with a Nintendo and the first three games I bought were; Kung Fu, Contra, Top Gun, (yeah I quetioned that one myself!) Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt. I'm hoping to get an Atari next. Needless to say it's fun playing the games that I played as a kid.
I love your channel Tyler! Keep up the GREAT work!! 💯
Can you do Secrets and History about Gumshoe (NES), please?
I really like that game and I am quite bummed out that Nintendo keeps ignoring it, they didn't even create a spirit for the character Mr. Stevenson in the recent Super Smash Brothers. Not sure if you feel the same tho.
Gumshoe needs to be revived!
Wheels on Meals has one of the best fights in film: Jackie Chan vs. Benny the Jet Urquidez (my one-time sensei). Check it out!
And one of the worst movie titles in film history.
my introduction to this movie was on Telemundo, dubbed in Spanish. I think it was every Friday night they would show a dubbed kung-fu/action flick. Spanish or not, movie still kicked ass ^o^
@@Twigg4075 oh buddy there are lots of bad movie titles, but yeah for a kung fu flick that name really doesn't hit the spot.
Great video. I learned something, thanks! This game goes way back for me. I loved the arcade, played the heck out of it at a bar while my friend's parents drank. The NES hit and this game was the very first game I got for it.
Coolest RUclips channel ever. I regularly played this game all the time but i don't think I've ever thought about it when it's not in immediate thought. The fact someone made a video about this have i can't believe it
I loved this game but the snakes and the midgets pissed me off so much
Ikr lol
Those symbols you spoke of, they are Chinese numbers.
一
二
三
四
五
六
Starting at the top going down are the numbers one through six.
Nice! Thanks man.
GenerationGapGaming you’re welcome. I only noticed this after learning a little bit f Japanese then playing this game and realized what they were. It’s kind of neat to understand what those characters are.
In ninja gaiden, when you collect the items that give you weapon usage, the character there is:
忍
It’s the first part of the word ninja or shinobi. I never understood what they were when I was a kid.
I was about to post this, then saw this comment! Here are the readings in Japanese:
一 (ichi)
二 (ni)
三 (san)
四 (yon) sometimes "shi", but since "shi" also means "death" people avoid it
五 (go)
六 (roku), the one emphasized at 5:51
But they're Japanese, not Chinese, right? I know this from Afro Samurai lol
Luis Colon Japanese use Chinese writing system. I can read a little bit of Chinese due to my experience with Japanese.
Hello and good morning I'm Peter from Hamilton Ontario Canada I'm 47 years old now and wow you guys just made my morning and thanks for the good memories on playing this game both at the arcades and at my uncle Tony's house lol, as a kid my brother Chris and I only had the Atari 2600 and my uncle Tony's kids my cousins had the nes and later the super NES and pretty much I stayed overnight there every weekend just to play games lol.
I played this game so much when I was a kid. I never got very far, but I remember it fondly.
Knock knock:
Who’s there?
Kung
Kung who?
Kung Fu!!
Just stumbled on your channel. I have a 6 year old I share in my love of retro and he loves it all.
I want to push my kid towards retro because of the fear of microtransactions in modern gaming. Very well done and produced video.
I remember the day that Kung Fu Master came to my local arcade. People loved it. There were at least 6 people standing by awaiting their turn. This was pre internet and unless you were an arcade owner you had no idea when a new game might show up and if it would be any good. What a great memory. I had Kung Fu on NES and played it often. It was one of the best arcade ports at the time.
Always super stoked when you post! Thanks for all the awesome content, man. Love your work
You are most welcome Sour Lemon. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Means a lot.
This was great. I’ve beaten this many times but knew little of its history. Great game and well done video. Keep em coming!
I will definitely keep them coming. Thanks for watching man.
Kung fu,double dragon, contra, iron tank, the jackal, ninja gaiden, shinobi, I can go on and on what a amazing childhood i got😎
This was my second game i bought in the late 80s I loved back then and still love it now, and i still have the original game cartridge from over 30 years later.
Sir this video was so nostalgic and high quality. Thank you for such a solid production and trip to memory lane. 👏
You are welcome Nate! Thanks for taking time to comment buddy.
Wow! Good historical recount and how to.
The game was pretty difficult as I recall. Thanks!
Damn you're bringing back the memories. I loved playing this on NES, but I feel like I might've actually played this in the arcade first. I"m not sure. Still awesome to see clips.
kung fu was my top 3 in the 80s, great video bro!
October 18 1981 is my birthday, i had this game when i was a kid, it was one of my favorite games. Kinda a cool coincidence that this game came out on my birthday in 1985, great video, thanks for sharing.
Being a home computer kid, I only played this in the arcades as Kung Fu Master, but this video really took me back even though I am kind of garbage at the game xD. Great video and presentation as always. I could never nail the knife-guy timings on the arcade, but I did enjoy it all the same. It's actually probably one of the last games I played 'for real' on an arcade machine too as up until about 2005, a local pub had one in the pool room along with a Super Space Invaders and a Double Dragon.
If you fancy more Kung Fu, Kung Fu Master on the Gameboy is yet another different version of the game, and probably my favourite over the arcade mode. It's got more settings, and fun enemies like a Jason clone with a giant chainsaw. I always also thought that Green Beret/Rush'N'Attack and Ninjawarriors took this kind of game far further forward than Vigilante, which to me was just Kung Fu Master with slower gameplay, cheaper enemies but improved 16 bit graphics.
Sidebar, it's sad that Kung Fu 2 never happened, but weirdly I've seen a Spartan X 2 doing the rounds for the Japanese Famicom? Is that a hack or the real deal?
Absolutely love ur channel brother!! Keep them kick axx videos coming!
I’m so happy I could cry. Thank you my brother. You are the best. This game rocks!!
No you're the best lol. Thanks man! Happy it brought a smile to your face.....and almost a tear.
Great presentation of the history and background for the foundation of such a memorable classic, you have given me new insight into this game, and I now once again have a sudden urge to go to the attic...
Awesome man. Makes me so happy you enjoyed it.
This video slaps bro, keep up the great work!
I was also born in 1982 and my name is Tyler..... nice to meet you Tyler! Love your videos and the memories it brings back.
New to the channel. Keep them coming I’m loving it!!!
Love this game. You always bring it back for me which puts a smile on my face. Fantastic video 🙂
Thanks JLuv! Means a lot to me that you enjoy the videos. Looking forward to hanging out at SEGE soon
1st game I owned was Metal Gear.. Then Mario, Mario 2, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Castlevania, Rambo, Kung Fu... Good times
Great video dude. Kinda went on a watching binge on your channel. Really digging the content.
Thanks man! Great meeting you this weekend. Wish we could have got to chat a little more and get to know each other. Keep in touch!
What a trip down memory lane. Awesome review
Just stumbled upon this channel. I really like it. No nonsence. Straight forward right on point. All about the games and the fun of playing them. Topped of with interesting facts , history and personal anecdotes. What more could you ask for?
Thanks Roger. Glad to have you here buddy.
An old high school buddy of mine has a Kung Fu Master arcade cabinet at his house. Playing it is such a blast from the past!
Saturday Supercade was my favorite show back then. I'm leaning toward the Mr. X in that episode being unrelated, though. I never got the feeling that the show's writers were video game fans to the degree that they'd make a reference that elaborate. Plus, they had to invent a ton of random throwaway bad guys each week.
I love this game... thank you for taking me back to my childhood memories!!!!
I didn't know a channel like this existed! Thanks pal
Dude your videos are so well done! Much appreciated 👍
Well thank you and I appreciate you taking time to tell me.
This video is incredibly timely. I actually just picked it up on Saturday for $4. The cart I bought does work, however, more often than not, I play NES on an emulator or my NES mini that I have loaded with the full catalog. Last night I played till the end of the 2nd level and then saved state. I will play some more later tonight and keep your tips in mind. Great video as always!
Glad you found it for a good price Matt. Kung Fu is a must have for the collection.
Oh I remember this sucker, it was a PAIN, I did managed to beat it twice or thrice in my childhood though, bittersweet memories~
Great video by the way ;)
Enjoying my second watch of this gem. I’m excited for the newest video when it drops
Great game. Love how each boss laughs differently. Neat little details:(
Also really dig that tune that plays in your videos. It involves nostalgia for some reason
I love the laughing too. I should have included it in the video lol......Regrets.
Kung Fu was definitely in my library of NES games. As soon as it came out on the NES, I had to have. I use to play the Kung Fu Master arcade version at the corner bar few houses next to mine. It was my favorite arcade game around 1984 or 1985. But when they made for the NES I had to have it. This and the Legend of Zelda were my favorite.
I can still here Mr. X laughing as Thomas is looking at Sylvia tied up in the chair. Good memories of this great game.
i click on these just to get some nostalgia and get impressed real quick on how deep he gets into these games.
I remember kung-fu growing up as a kid! my uncle had the NES and I just fell in love with the system... that game and most all of the 'black box' lineup I just loved it all! To this day I'm not super good at the game though, lol the 4th floor with the flying things gets me every time! I did play a rom of the Japanese sequel, seemed to be mostly the same game just new levels, music enemies and graphics! kinda fun I do recommend checking it out if you liked the first game.
and for some reason RUclips's algorithm thinks I want lots of 80&90s nostalgia videos in my life recently... And it's so right!!!!!!!!
Loved playing this game back in the day!
