Mike Tyson starting the fight hitting like a sledgehammer, but slowly tiring and weakening as the fight goes on is one of the most realistic things Nintendo ever did.

How many Tyson fights have you watched? This game came out before the Tokyo Buster Douglas fight. Granted most of Tyson's wins before that were early blow outs but some went the distance and Tyson showed no signs of tiring.

@@kyoku1982 My guess is that it is just coincidence. As time goes on in real fights, fighters get tired. Often this means that their punches are not as strong as they were at the beginning of the fight. Nintendo may have just wanted to program this general rule into the fight with Tyson. There is an octopus boss in Final Fantasy 2 that has a similar issue. Check it out:

@@kyoku1982 This seems like a logical explanation. I made Little Mac fight Mike Tyson so many times in my lifetime, that I had to come up with new ways of making the final fight challenging again, in order to have an excuse to keep playing my favorite video game hahaha :). I ended up creating a Game Genie code that completely stops the timer, thus keeping Mike Tyson is his deadly 1 hit uppercuts phase for the entire fight. I also came up with a no three knockdown rule code for the opponents and combined them together during the following fight, while also playing blindfolded:

That's how much I love this fight hahaha!

I managed to beat Tyson twice, and record it once on my old VCR. I gathered all the tips I could, and started at the beginning to work my way up. I lost far more than I would ever win, but it brought me back to try again and again. As an adult who has not won this since the early 90s, I find it far more difficult, and have forgotten all the tricks I ever knew. Great video, brought back a ton of memories.

I will rewatch this again and be on the look out for that bearded guy, but speaking of a bearded guy nodding at the right moment, I recall Mr.Myagi being that bearded guy that nodded to Daniel at the moment before he delivered the crane kick to Cobra Kai Johnny's noggin in the Karate Kid. Ha ha
No wait a sec, actually Mr.Myagi nodded in approval afterwards, when Daniel got the trophy. I think his cue nod was in Karate Kid part 2 near the end when Daniel faces off against Chosen. Daniel sets up his knockout crane attack, when he briefly looks over at Mr.Myagi who nods quietly, as if to say, "Yeah go for it." Too bad for Daniel when Chosen countered it though.

A couple tips for Mr. Sandman:
-Watch his gloves before Dreamland Express. He will shift them slightly before attacking!
-If you don't know when he's going to do it, try punching him in the face. If be blocks and doesn't counter, that means it's coming.
-Speaking of punching him in the face, that's actually the best way to beat him! Besides mentioned above and the rolling jabs, he will always counter, which in turns allows YOU to counter him every single time! Just watch your stamina and remember the Dreamland Express and you'll be beat him.

I take advantage of the fact that you get a large supply of hearts for the Sandman fight. Once he's at the point where he's throwing right hooks, after I do the jab to the face and the 3 body blows, I immediately throw another jab to the face. He will dodge it, and then immediately follow up with a right hook. Dodge, that, punish with the jab to the face and 3 body blows, rinse and repeat. This takes all of the guesswork out of the fight, because if he doesn't dodge your jab but instead blocks it, you know the Dreamland Express is coming.

What a great vid series! Just a tip- surprisingly about 80% of the punches in the game are able to be countered. I went back later and learned them all for example an uppercut to your left is often countered by left body blow. You can earn stars against pretty much every character this way. There's almost always a punch to counter theirs.

Also: the reason the NES seems faster is because of modern flatscreen display lag.
All flatscreens introduce an amount of display lag, a delay between receiving a frame of data and when it's reflected on the screen. Sometimes it's surprisingly long but even good ones add a little. CRTs don't generally add this, and so you can react more rapidly. Most games don't have direct tests of reaction time without some game elements there to help lessen the blow on people with naturally slower reflexes, like with the various boxers' patterns and tendencies, but Punch-Out is very reflex-based in the Tyson fight.
The best thing I can suggest, if you can't play on a CRT, is to put your television in game mode, if it has one. Most screens do a bit of processing to the image to try to make it look nicer, but game mode tells the screen not to bother with that, which can reduce some (although not all) of that lag.

    • @UCanBeatVideoGames
      @UCanBeatVideoGames  3 года назад +2

So I've playing on a modern projector, and if I play on a NES and connect through Component cables I have no lag that I can notice. I can definitely notice lag playing on the NES Classic Mini, or the Switch. It seems like anything connected through HDMI is laggy.
I would like to get a good CRT going so I can play with the Zapper. Def can't do that on my setup

It's less the fault of HDMI connection and more of modern displays, it's how they are, that's why lower input lag is used as a selling point by companies.
The lower refresh rate of the usual flat screen monitor also doesn't help with fast moving things.

    • @rodneylives
      @rodneylives 3 года назад

@@maesejesus Yep, I believe this is correct, it's not HDMI for the most part but the flat screen technology. Thing is, most HDMI displays are also flatscreens, just due to the fact that both it and flat screen displays hit the market at about the same time.

Mr Sandman has been my boogeyman for years. I've only ever had this game on modern systems (Wii U, Switch), and I couldn't avoid the Dreamland Express due to the input lag. But even with blind dodges, I could never seem to avoid it. The timing of his punches after the first one seemed wildly inconsistent as to whether you needed a full dodge or quick dodge. And I'd swear half the time his sprite would never change or flash like it does on NES footage. Maybe it's bad emulation? In any case, I managed to beat him thanks to sheer luck on anticipating the Express and hours of studying his other moves. Super Macho Man went down in mere minutes afterward. I think I'll save Mr. Dream for another day and just be satisfied with the win. Thanks for the video!

For Bald Bull's charge in the rematch there isn't a camera but there is a bearded man on the left side of the audience. The sign to hit Bull is when he nods his head
Also during Super Macho Man's fight there is a guy with glasses in the audience left to the camera. When his glasses fall is when you have to dodge Macho's single spinning punch

So, the nostalgia for me with this game.... I started boxing at 10yrs old (1987) and my 3 favorite boxers were Julio Caesar Chavez, Mike Tyson, and late Sugar Ray Leonard. I grew up in Florida and there you couldn't compete against others until the age of 13... So I spent about 2 weekends a month in a local gym (Title) practicing. When Mike Tyson's Punch Out came out I was hooked. No pun intended lol. Back then you had to immerse yourself into the story lines of games with a bit of imagination. When I moved to Oklahoma, there we no boxing gyms in the city....back then, it was all about Karate and Tae Kwon Do..... The only fall back I had to "boxing" was this game....and let me tell you, when Mike would fight on TV I would be so pumped up that I would pull the game out and try to beat it....imagining I was moving up to fight him. I honestly only beat him in game one time.....and it took me ALL NIGHT LONG of continues until I finally timed him right.

I really like this channel. Great job. It's great background while I'm working from home. I love the beginner's approach that you take for all of the games. I don't want to add any advanced tips because what you do here is good enough to stand on its own. But if I can clarify a couple things. In the first Flamenco fight, you say that he "may" stay down on the first knockdown. If you use the left, right, left, right technique, he will always get up from the first knockdown. If you didn't mess up the technique, he will get up with less energy and will stay down after the second knockdown. If the player messes up the pattern before the first knockdown, he'll get up with more energy and won't stay down after the second knockdown. In the second Piston Honda fight, he'll always stay down on the first down as long as you hit him as you described. The bearded guy in the audience to the left bobs his head to show the timing. if he goes down, he stays down. If the player's timing is off, Piston Honda won't go down. Player gets a star punch instead. Great work! I'll get through all of these videos eventually.

Tip on Sandman: 50 seconds into the first round, he starts throwing hooks so instead of waiting for him to throw, throw a face punch (doesn’t matter left or right) to force sandman to throw his hooks faster so you can dodge and counter as usual. You can knock him down faster and also possibly get a 1st round TKO on him if you don’t take any hits and Sandman gives you the smaller of 2 refills in phase 3

It seems impossible but once you get the pattern down your good to go. Check out some speed runs of Punch Out too.

I love this comment. I love the fact you brought up 1987 & there was no magazines to look up this game & of course no internet. Looking up RUclips walkthroughs help a whole lot. I only beat this game like 5 years ago when I looked up tips & tricks etc. Before that I would only maybe get a decision win on Tyson, never knocked him down & it would be a very rare thing. I would mostly lose to Macho Man all the time before I looked up stuff on youtube. It's an excellent point you make. It was a lot harder back then to beat games.

So, for the crouching punches thrown by Von Kaiser, you dont have to throw the punches to his opposite side of the punch he is throwing. You do, however, need to do tbat for Great Tiger. Also, for Piston Honda, there is a chance that you get a star instead of knocking him down. Also also, for Don Flamenco, if you do a stutter punch on him when he throws his first punch, that is, punch his face once, then instead of doing a body shot, if you kind of pause before punching him in the face a second time, you will get a star. Throw the star punch and you can beat him in around 15 seconds

As a kid, I actually never bothered with any of the stars and never did TKO Tyson at the end. I was only able to win by decision. As for the responsiveness of the game vs what it is on the NES on a CRT, for me, it's very noticeable and on other games as well. Nintendo's emulation of these games on modern hardware has some input lag from the controllers and modern TVs respond slower than CRTs. It makes playing some of these old games really difficult for me. Some of it can be mitigated by putting the TV in "gaming mode" but the results will very and it still won't fix the input lag.
I also once saw a really good video a long time ago that compared Mike Tyson in the game to Mike Tyson in real life. It was a very interesting way to look at it as in real life, Tyson normally won his matches really quickly, but if you could survive the start of the match and force it to go long you had a much better chance of beating him. Much like the game where for the first minute and a half, you just need to survive and get to round 2 for a change to beat him. Then round 3 you have much more opportunity and can win by decision if you survive all the way through. I don't know how intentional it was for the game to work like that, but if it was it's a neat detail on how far the developers went for it.

a few tricks I've learned in Punch Out.
against Don Flamenco 1 you can get a star punch after Flamenco throws his uppercut, just dodge and throw a delayed punch (wait a second before counterpunching Flamenco) it's tough to time it right but it can help get a faster win on Flamenco.
against Soda Popinski, you can pull a move that freezes Soda while he's crouching for an uppercut. just hold down to block when he goes down to throw an uppercut, this will cause Popinski to stay crouched long enough to throw a quick body blow on Soda for a free star.
against Super Macho Man you can also manipulate his guard like with Piston Honda, this also comes in handy when he delays before throwing one of his spin punches or when he sets up for the multi spin punch after a knockdown
