Welcome to Cinemassacre Rental Reviews' Febru-Carrey. Four Jim Carrey movies all February long. The Truman Show (1998) is the film people remember when thinking of Carrey's more serious roles outside of slapstick comedy. The synopsis: He doesn't know it, but everything in Truman Burbank's (Jim Carrey) life is part of a massive TV set. Executive producer Christof (Ed Harris) orchestrates "The Truman Show," a live broadcast of Truman's every move captured by hidden cameras. Cristof tries to control Truman's mind, even removing his true love, Sylvia (Natascha McElhone), from the show and replacing her with Meryl (Laura Linney). As Truman gradually discovers the truth, however, he must decide whether to act on it.

Cool you got sponsors but I’d never play that shit
Hey can you guys do one on event horizon. I think it's part of the hellraiser universe and it leads in to the matrix. Call it a stretch but I've got a theory lol
Seen it...
Wasn't that the game that made Ion Maiden change it's name to Ion Fury?
I love the extra features where they interview the "Actors" and show their thoughts on being in the truman show. Like Truman's friend is an alcoholic because he drinks beer constantly on truman show to keep up the act for truman. Great stuff.
I love that whenever people talk about this movie, they barely talk about it as a movie, instead people start questioning their reality. It's a great testament to just how thought provoking the film really is.
Well it did create a type of mental disorder lol..
Agree it has to be in everybody’s top 20
"In case I don't see you, good afternoon, Good evening, and good night."
I use this in real life but i did forget what it was from nice to remember it :D
I see you! And you're a cool dude! See you later...
"You never had a camera in my head!" One of the greatest films ever made.
Great quote.
There's a double take in that line.
Truman says it as a act of defiance, but in reality, *all* of the cameras where inside his head because his head is the center of his subjective experience.
As much as Truman is inside the show, the show is inside Truman. looked at this way, the film could be a story about enlightenment.
The show is an analogy for samsara, duality, illusion, the ego, etc. It's familiar and habitual and even a little comforting to an extent, but it doesn't contain any real fulfillment. Whereas the world outside the show is nirvana or awakening.
The final obstacle to awakening is not so much that samsara is tempting or corrupting or that , but it means that you're well and truly your own boss. You've seen through anything that could have placed a limitation on you. Even the gods.
限界突破
If some boffin with a PHD comes along and says the world is such and such a way, you can tell him to piss off. You don't need anyone to think for you. (We'll leave out the complications of you also being the PHD, you wanting to be fooled, and the fact that you were really you're own boss even while you were completely deluded.)
That's naturally very frighting because it means you're not really a person or identity at all.
You're it.
You could be stuck dead at any moment and it wouldn't matter because the real you is what there is.
The thing that sucks about being "me" is you don't get to be it. The thing that sucks about being it is you don't get to be a me.
So after Samsara and nirvana, the Truman show and the world outside, comes the middle way where you become a person who unites both worlds and is whole.
@@amanofnoreputation2164 The Middle Way is where Truman becomes a Vlogger, and gives both terrible advice and the best you'll ever hear, 🤣.
Ego in service to Presence.
Adam J. Cuthbert beautiful. like goosebumps
The bit that always really got to me was when Truman's buddy says "the last thing I would ever do, is lie to you". Truman's gonna have some trust issues.
Ben Church he actually said the last thing I’d ever do is steal a pie from you
he said yannie

One of the planned endings was to have Truman leaving the dome and then get shot dead by the director. Thank god they didnt film that shit
Honestly that Iron Maiden game looks like garbage.
I Love Iron Maiden and rpgs, but you're right. It looks like dog shit
I bet it's that Raid game everyone advertises, different skin.
No matter how awful it is, I kind of like it more on idea level than Raid, because at least is has some sort of reason to exist.

Saying Iron Maiden looks like

Ya Derp..!
They didn't even mention the best part of the movie! The last scene where they see Truman walk off the set, ending the show, and then the people are just like "eh, what else is on?" That was brilliant.
wasnt the the cable guy last scene??
The ending is just great social commentary on contemporary society, once the show ends after 2 decades, people just move on to the next show. Society just doesn’t care.
It's actually part of why I'm losing my attachment to pop culture; something will always be the next thing, and the current thing won't be. I need something deeper than that.
@@KingRandor82 I would study some philosophy if I were you.
@@JohnSmith-wx9wj I have in fact been starting to, funny you should mention ;)
@@KingRandor82 Good man
@@JohnSmith-wx9wj a personal favorite of mine at this time, in fact, is the speeches of Alan Watts; and a friend recently showed me the piece on Plato's Cave. LOVED it.
It always shocked me that 'friends and family' didnt end up having some real feelings for Truman after being invovled in his life for so long.
Marlon/Louis did, they just got rid of the scenes where it was obvious. Because..I dunno
10:08 - You're talking about "Brave New World" and not 1984.
Aldous Huxley and George Orwell are rolling in their graves
Brave New World is also the title of an Iron Maiden album!
It's pretty much both. Brave New World has soma. 1984 has Victory Gin, etc.
@@ryandean3162 But Victory Gin is a pleb thing and it sucks, higher class of people got better drinks
Dammit, I knew someone would beat me to the punch
Also recommended for viewing: Pleasantville, a film with a number of similar themes released in the same year, 1998. That and Truman Show together make for an excellent double-feature.
Toby maguire was great in that.
Great movie. Touched on so many things.
Just had a double feature with The Truman Show and The Matrix. They’re kind of similar if you think about it...
a film with the other half of the dumb and dumber duo
What a great way to celebrate the release of the sonic movie.
Not to mention Valentine's Day. ...The only Valentines I get are from my mother. How pathetic is that?
Btw he is excellent as Robotnik. It is an awesome film 😊🎉🎉🎉

Cavey Möth my valentine is my dog. He’s a great cuddler.
The late 90s had some great "reality is a simulation" films: The Matrix, Truman Show, The 13th Floor, and Dark City. All favorites of mine. Would love to see you guys review Dark City in particular. Ironically, parts of the sets were reused in the Matrix and one of the actors plays the Trainman in the last film.
ZafVirex dude the 13th floor is a really good movie and dark city is one of my favorites of all time
“See you guys at Fucho Land!”
I like it how casually he just says that
Kieran has the best closing lines and they come so natural.
"The Truman Show" is similar to the Twilight Zone episode "A World of Difference".
"Saw" is similar to the Twilight Zone episode "The Jeopardy Room".
"Maximum Overdrive" is similar to the Twilight Zone episode "A Thing About Machines".
Truman Show is a good movie in and of itself but it did irk me a little when it was described as "so original". A movie that seems to be based upon an episode---not of TW (60's)---but upon "The New Twilight Zone" (80's) isn't "so original". Truman Show had a much larger budget and I think was more enjoyable than the New TW episode.
The Movie Cube got it's idea from the TZ episode "5 characters looking for an exit".
Chuckie similar to 'taking Tina' episode of twilight zone
@@billmcleod353 The most original works are usually inspired by something else. Finding pure originality is rather difficult nowadays :)
@@piotrsegal6475 Or any days.
...The Truman Show is one of my favourite movies ever! There's something that so intriguing about the concept... I also love that we do not actually see the ending of Truman's story, it's just like if we were too the spectators of the show and we're left wondering what we'll happen now that he left the Dome!
Indeed, it is also among mine.
It was on last night haven't seen it in years and watched it last night
I remember a fan theory that a fan of the show was waiting outside the door and when Truman walked through he was shot dead and Kristoph felt he warned him to stay
@@jimmylarson7856 Wouldn't there have been security or some such outside the dome at the exits/entrances though? Not saying that someone wouldn't have been theoretically able to take a few shots at him, but still, surely there would have also been an exclusion zone around it too... oh well, it's just speculation on a fictitious scenario.
@@tylerdalton4406 wait, so when was the last time you watched it?
Jim Carrey really show his range when it comes to acting in this film
Best part about the "This could happen to you!" sign is that it actually does it happen. When he's escaping on the boat they strike the boat with lightning...
I never noticed that before.
Easily my favorite Jim Carrey movie, very clever flick
I find this movie to be very watchable. I even rewatch some individual scense on youtube. The acting, sets, and score are just so interesting. Always seeing something new.
20:59 - When the illusion all falls apart.
The 90's and early 2000's was a great time for movies that basically re-evaluated reality. Movies like The Truman Show, Dark City, eXistenZ, The Thirteenth Floor and Matrix all explored a constructed/simulated reality. I think that's also why thematically these movies hold up really well cause it's still something to think about today.
Just watched dark city. So good!
the rise of intrusive and terrible reality shows for voyeurs retroactively make this movie more meaningful but also depressing. not only did we not learn from it, apparently certain other people got the wrong lesson
Not that this movie invented the concept exactly, but..
don't forget just about anything by David Lynch
The most horrifying thing is this is set in a world full of sociopaths.
Truman Show is my favorite Carrey movie. Most people say Eternal Sunshine but personally I think the memory people have of that movie or the idea of the plot is held up as better than the movie actually is when you watch it
17:50 James - "He sounds like an ASS to me" Lol that's great!
It's likely the most I've felt watching a dramatic film.
I was just thinking about this film yesterday. What a treat to see this in my sub box!
Seems a bit…orchestrated
The gang should have a look at Stranger than Fiction - that has Will Ferrell as a guy who hears a narrator saying everything he does, reminded me of The Truman Show
Seriously one of the best movies ever made.
Maybe they will get there, I like them reviewing these more serious, quality movies. I do like when they review shit though like those Y2K preparation videos.
Vaguely reminiscent of 'In the Mouth of Madness'.
Underrated movie. Isn't Tilda Swinton the author/narrator?
Literally one of only two roles that I actually liked Will Ferrell in (the other one is Megamind). That movie is phenomenal
This is easily my favorite Jim Carey film. The ending is so damn dark and depressing it's rather beautiful
Truman Show is my favorite 90s movie, but the title of Best Carrey movie for me goes to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
@@ormhaxan I hope they review ESotSM soon too. Loved that film.
How is it dark and depressing? Truman gets his freedom and chance to meet his true love again.
@@Clay3613 there are so many layers explored, it could be different for everyone watching the film, connected to it's themes. We all see things differently.😊
The ending was depressing? He escapes! Sylvia even runs out to greet him, implied. I know it just ends like the Sopranos, but i think he was better off... well, maybe not. idk
One thing I always thought was weird was at the end, when he's leaving the show and he says to the show's creator, "In case I don't see you, good afternoon, good evening and good night" because that's his catchphrase, but since he just found out about how his life is a TV show, it probably never occurred to him that that's his catchphrase. To him, it's just a thing he says sometimes.
Nah even regular people have their catch phrases. He was probably self aware that not other people used it.
10:09 I think the reference is more too "A Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley not 1984... maybe he just mixed them up.
anth4x Alan Watts got me hip to that 1
“What are you talking about? Who you talking to?”
They just go round and round!
There there that damn beetle jes

like you've got advertisers, they want to advertise on youtube becasue it's where everyone goes to post everything... because it's so much more genuine and real than TV
but then they want to change it so it's not real anymore. because they think reality is going to offend the real people living the reality... somehow? so their target audience is.. fictional characters??

The Truman Show was one of the best films ever made in my opinion. And Carrey's best.
This movie was such a truth drop now that we know we live under a dome.
Peter Weir, the director of The Truman Show, was underrated.

1. Like you said: it's February,
2. You're clearly 25 or under if you think that's one of his good movies.
If he had decided to stay in the dome, it never would have worked. Once he knew about the show it was over.

he's a freaking MASTER! those scenes wouldn't be as intense without his music!
Check out his other work, it's really astonishing. It's so moving.
This and Eternal Sunshine are my fav Jim Carrey movies.
I must admit I'm not very into his humour but when he does dramas he is a damn good actor, like Adam Sandler.
Luis Mario Guerrero Sánchez Uncut Gems blew me away.
"Who's the main character? I want it to be me"

I want to know who the antagonist is.
I like how video of a Jim Carrey movie comes out when the sonic the hedgehog movie (jim Carrey plays Robotnik) hits theaters

Suffice it to say that it's a great movie with a great score/soundtrack and introduced me to the acting talent of a young Mark Ruffalo, all under the auspices of a very interesting premise.
One of my favorite Jim Carrey movies. Best line "What are you talking about, who are you TALKIN to!" I say that to co workers all the time lol
Father son music on the bridge is wonderfull
i've been watching AVGN since 2006 and it amazes me how innovative this guy is and how he was able to put his whole team on. Great content will always have longevity.
This was an uncommonly great episode in the series. I particularly liked the proto-philosophical discussion, and how it fits in with the sort of rock and roll matter-of-fact attitude of the show.
"I always feel like somebody's watching me"...I forgot who sang that line along with Michael Jackson
It was Rockwell.
Saw it in the theaters and really enjoyed it. Re-watched it a couple of months ago and it still holds up. Great acting by Carrey.

Wait that’s filmed on a set? My life is a lie
One of the most original, clever satires in recent memory. I love this film.
This makes me want to watch The Majestic. I haven't seen that one probably since I was young
I think my main problem with that movie and the Truman Show (and Number 23 etc.) was that they were too serious for Jim Carrey, who I loved for Liar Liar, SNL, Ace Ventura etc.
OMG Thought I was the only one going to mention The Majestic:p
I feckin' love that movie. People complained that it was too much like a Frank Capra movie- which is a dumb reason to hate it, Frank Capra made some GREAT movies.
This movie broke my heart when he touches the wall at the end.....👊💥🇺🇸
