- Welcome to Cinemassacre Rental Reviews' Febru-Carrey. Four Jim Carrey movies all February long. The Mask is the third film from 1994 we've reviewed so far starring Jim Carrey. What a great year!! The Mask is a 1994 American superhero comedy film directed by Charles Russell and based on a comic book. When timid bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) discovers a magical mask containing the spirit of the Norse god Loki, his entire life changes. While wearing the mask, Ipkiss becomes a supernatural playboy exuding charm and confidence which allows him to catch the eye of local nightclub singer Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz). Unfortunately, under the mask's influence, Ipkiss also robs a bank, which angers junior crime lord Dorian Tyrell (Peter Greene), whose goons get blamed for the heist.

My favorite part is when the detectives are going through The Mask's pockets and the detectives pull out a rocket launcher so The Mask says "I have a permit for that."

I love how James was over thinking the concept of the character.
The character is suppose to be a literal representation of a live Tex Avery cartoon. Fun fact Jim Carey actually loves watching old cartoons in his spare time which I think is why he is so wild with his performance in a very improve fashion. He just takes that over the top wild appeal that cartoons had and applies it to his comedy.
It's why he's generally called a Living Cartoon

The "redhead" that betrayed Stanley was played by Amy Yasbeck, who also starred in Problem Child 1 and 2, and Robin Hood: Men In Tights. She was also married to John Ritter (RIP) ..
She was in more movies than those thou. She did plenty of Mel Brooks movies. She was great in Dracula: dead and loving it.

This movie was so full of throw away lines like: Lieutenant Kellaway : "Those pajamas are impossible. This actually happened." or Stanley Ipkiss referring to his landlord, "Aren't you due back at the lab to have your bolts tightened?". That's what made this movie so re watchable as an adult. There was always some thing you missed.

There's actually this wonderful club in Cancun, Mexico called "Coco Bongo". I think the movie got the concept of the club from it.
I think you guys missed to talk about the "Pachuco/Los Angeles in the 50's" vibe from the whole movie.

Crazy how long it's been since this gem. Love the concept, atmosphere, characters, special effects, writing, and cinematography. There are so many layers, it just feels like a wild ride. Tough to say favorite scene, love the film in it's entirety.

It's a bit late for either of those. After 2 decades it's best to let them remain as art rather than have their legacy undone by a sequel that won't capture the feeling of the original

Dude, Justin’s mention of the Warner brothers store REALLY takes me back. There was one at my local mall when I used to live in Long Island that I’d always be in as a kid. I remember there being a huge bust of Superman and Batman breaking through the wall on one side of the store. Always blew my mind every time I saw it.
The Warner Bros store from my childhood (near London, UK) had a full-sized Gremlin.
The one down here at Bayfront Park also has the rocket. I saw it ten years ago passing by. I loved pressing those buttons as a kid. It may still be there.
I know this has nothing to do with the subject of this video but I want to make a comment in remembrance of "Coffin Joe" (José Mojica Marins), who passed away two days ago. Realistically, not many people even know who he is, but James was a fan, and I believe even people who know him might not know this yet.

When I think about The Mask I think about two things: Cuban Pete and Cameron Diaz. Mostly Cameron Diaz.
I just think about all the plot holes.
Cameron Diaz definitly awakened something in 10 year old me.

The scene that makes me laugh is The Mask doing his Oscar winning dying performance in the minion's arms. The Mask looking into the camera and coughing just makes me 😂!
and the henchmen were so sad about it....best scene ever.....
My favorite is when he get's riddled with bullet holes.

Fun fact: The Mask was originally intended to be a rated R replacement for the Nightmare on Elm St. series.
A bit ironic how the director of the third Elm Street flick (Chuck Russell) directed The Mask.

I hit puberty looking at Cameron Diaz in this movie.
I like the dynamic between him and his landlady. So funny when he’s tip toeing past her door as the mask and that cartoon clock starts goin crazy 🤣.
The “Cuban Pete” bit at 10:10 is actually a reference to Desi Arnaz, AKA Ricky Ricardo from “I Love Lucy.”
Fun fact: Carrey played Ricky Ricardo in a skit of "In Living Color"

I had this movie on VHS as a kid and me and my friend watched this movie a million times and knew like every line by heart
The hardest I think I've ever laughed at a movie was at The Mask. The car driving up, honking at him, "I think he wants to communicate..." That absurdly loud AAOOOOOOOOGAHHHH horn made me nearly pass out.
I was totally into Jim Carrey around this time too.

i love the scene when the old car breaks down on the bridge and he burns his hand on the radiator cap, and then kicks the bumper and falls down before i tall collapses. SOOO hilarious. It looked like he genuinely burned his hand and genuinely fell down. Cracks me up every time.
I remember loving it as a kid, we used to have movie day in kindergarten and each kid would bring a movie for everyone to watch, i remember one of my friends brought the mask but our teacher was scared of that movie and didn't let us watch it
I remember doing movie day back when i was a kid. I always hated it because we could only bring rated G movies.
That happened to me when I was in pretty school or kindergarten but the movie was Jurrassic Park. I was mad at the time, but I kinda get where the teacher was coming from now

I did the same thing bringing The Mask to school...only I was in 2nd grade. Teacher didn't let us watch it either even though everyone in class had already and were excited.
I see a lot more Tex Avery style in The Mask than anything else. Especially when he's in the club fawning over Cameron Diaz.
If I remember correctly, the Mask uses your own inner personality and enhances it. It's why we're shown Stanley watching cartoons in his apartment and how his version of the Mask is basically those cartoons in real life.

I usually like the original langauge in pretty much everything. But in this part, I absolutely loved the delivery in the spanish dub. "Mira mamá! Me aplastaron! ja ja ja". The translation is not exact, it means "Look mom, they squashed me!". But the way he says it.

You guys missed one TINY deleted scene, that was deleted for, and I shit you not, "pacing". The scene involves when he gets frisked in the park. They pull out the bazooka, and he goes, "I have a permit for that." There was SUPPOSED to be another line where they pull out a little card, and Doyle goes "Bazooka Permit". HE LITERALLY HAD A PERMIT FOR A BAZOOKA!

Cameron Diaz has never ever looked hotter than she did in this movie. It's like right after this she got skinnier and somehow lost her curves.
Can't wait for next week as Man on the Moon is probably my favorite Jim Carrey movie easily.

My favorite Jim Carrey movie was and still is Me, Myself & Irene! If you have the DVD you have to let it sit on the menu a few times until it asks if you want to take your meds, and you say no, the menu will change to Hank and music changes. You can also view the movie with all the deleted (and partially finished) deleted scenes included with the movie while it plays in Hank mode!

A little disappointed there's no mention of the dynamite burp followed by "That's a spicy meatball!" Hands down my favorite laugh of the film. It helps that it comes off the thrill of the dog wearing the Mask. I finally showed the flick to my daughter and she also just plain lost it when she saw that moment.
The part that made me laugh the most was... Well the whole movie. But it was the Cuban Pete scene, because of one split, blink and you miss it second just before he started singing, and he was shaking the Maracas, just the look on his face cracked me pretty hard.

Those awful character head cases that several Seasons of the Simpsons DVDs got are the worst movie cases of all time.
The scene where the guy dies with a cigarette in his mouth after the bank robberie was super gritty.
Jim Carrey really fits the role well. I also like how he acted in "The Truman Show" and "The Majestic"

I was 6 when this movie came out but I remember this movie very well from my childhood, I need to re-watch this now. This brought back a lot of memories..
I can explain the tabs on DVD cases. I used to work at a record/movie store and thieves would use a razor to just cut along the opening of the case through the cellophane pull out the dvd. the tabs made it so you couldn't open the case without completely unwrapping the DVD, which was a lot harder to do discretely. .
19:00 on that note, I was actually denied entry to a bar my friend worked at on his birthday. I dressed as close to what was expected as I could, but they wouldn't let me in. I told them I was there for the birthday of one of their employees. Still no dice. I gave up after I went home to change, came back, and got denied again. Apparently I just didn't look gangsta enough.
