    Not gonna lie, I always teared up a little as a kid when the little girl is crying and asking Frankenstein to please don't go while she throws him her teddy bear as he's being pulled back into his universe.

      Not to mention the fact that Igor never existed until Son of Frankenstein(1939) . Before that it was Dwight Frye portraying *Fritz* whom *The Monster* hung when he escaped.

      I saw it in the theater, then rented the tape and recorded it, so I had my own copy. Watched it many, many times!

      I know, right? I was 7 in 1988 when I saw this movie. It was perfect in every way and still holds up for me...bad fucking language and all. That's also what made it great, 'cause I was a little cussing, heavy metal listening son of a bitch when I was that age. Idk, wtf they're talking about.

      To be fair, I grew up during the 80's and I never heard of this movie till the 2010's. I looked up it's box office performance and it did NOT do well (it only made about 3 and a half million and had a budget of 12 million). I definitely did NOT see it on TV either (I didn't have cable, just the basic channels). It only got ONE VHS release during 1988 and nothing else and didn't come to DVD till 2007 (that's when it got popular with a cult following. Before that, few people saw it).Great movie.

    I think the filmmakers assumed by 1986 everyone knew the universal monsters, and back story wasnt important, just the fun of having them all together was important

      @@GrosvnerMcaffrey Not sure about Monster Squad but I do remember that the VHS version of The Goonies was just PG and then the DVD version was PG-13, no idea if the theatrical version had swearing but it was all cut out of the VHS version.

    A girl I used to work with brought up this movie one day and I was like, "Huh?" A week later, an Amazon package was delivered to me with the DVD of The Monster Squad and a note from her telling me that I needed to watch it. One of the best surprise gifts ever.

    This is my all-time favourite childhood movie. I wore out so many vhs copies, that my dad got so sick of buying the movie, that he just rented it and switched out the old worn out copy with the rented copy...at least 3 times. I think I ruined 6 vhs' thorough my early to late childhood. Bless his delinquent heart.

    The reason you didn't really hear about it is because the Lost Boys came out within 2 weeks of the Monster Squad! Completely overshadowed it. Regarding the language.. it was the 80s! We said a bunch of shit back then that wasn't really considered AS offensive. I think if you grew up watching it, it would hold up better. Andre Gower, who played the lead, Sean, actually made a documentary about this movie called, appropriately enough "Wolfman's Got Nards!".

    People used to say Goonies was one of those "You're an 80's kid if you've seen it.", but they show Goonies on ABC Family/Freeform all the time. THIS movie is a much better example of that.

    Wolfman got nards is amazing and i own 3 t-shirts and one hoodie version of that but "Creature stole my twinkie" doesnt get enough love. the line is almost forgotten as if never said.

    I feel James. I didn't know anything about The Monster Squad until 2014 from the Nostalgia Critic. After watching Nostalgia Critics review, and watching it without his review. I ended up, liking it a lot. It is cheesy but I enjoy it.

    A big "Oh shit!" moment for me was when the wolfman regenerated after being blown up with dynamite showing that silver is truly the only thing that can kill a werewolf.

    Sometimes Justin’s negativity and contrarianism isn’t a whole lot of fun to watch.
    I can respect his opinion, but I can’t help but think this video would have been more enjoyable if it were just Mike and James.

    Did you ever notice that the actress that played the mother in Goonies was the scene actress inmonster squad. I know that there is a connection but what I wanted to point out is that some people make it a fan theory that monster squad in Goonies are cousins because the mothers are twins in reality it's the same actress

    The Monster Squad has a strange habit of introducing something totally serious, then going right back to zaniness. Like when the camera focusses on the old man's concentration camp tattoo...and they never bring it up again.

    I have this still on VHS and DVD. I love the idea of living close enough to the drive in to have binoculars and a radio n view the movie. The closest drive-in when i was a kid was an hour away and were already in the midst of being phased out.

      @@JackA066 I like Lost Boys , but it does have pretty obvious homosexual undertones. I am not saying that is a bad thing , it doesn't bother me. But it's there. I honestly think it might be more interesting if they played it up a bit more. Maybe in the inevitable remake.

    James refers to this as the end of an era but I would say Abbott and Costello meet frankenstein was the true end of that paticular era, monster squad is an homage to that era and also the little rascals.

    As far as I can tell. This Frankenstein's monster was trying to look more like the monster from the book more than anything.

    The only thing I remember from that old nostalgic movie is the little girl introducing Frankenstein to the boys and they go into hiding and the little girl says "dont be chicken shit!!"

      I have the special edition dvd of this and they have a interview reel about the movie and they got the actress who played her and asked her about that scene and she said that was her favorite thing. She remembers asking her mom if it was ok to say that and was super stoked when she got the yes.

      @@unclecreed2986 honestly, I like them both. Manhunter was more realistic, and Tom was scarier than Ralph Finnes, but there's more of an arc for Francis in Red Dragon. The modern presentation of Red Dragon is easier for me to watch, so gun to my head, I might go with that.

    When I was in 2nd grade in the 80's my group of friends loved this movie. We called our group of friends the monster squad and each took the nickname of one of the monsters.
