I always thought of the rocket boots as a gimmicky way to reference Mario's jumping ability from the games.

In the cartoons they didn't refer to him as Bowser, they called him King Koopa.
In a few episodes of the Super Mario 3 show, he's addressed as "Bowser Koopa." Most notably in the episode Crimewave Clyde.
There’s also a few books that came out around the same time which refer to Bowser as “King Koopa”.

I just realized that the Mario Bros. being plumbers is the most relatable thing about them to IRL people. That's definitely why they laid into it.

Unpopular Opinion - I like this movie, it's not a masterpiece, but it have certain charm. Like any given tv show from 90's - you know it's ridiculous but you still entertained.

The underground city was called Dinohatten? I would've called it World 1-2.

That would have made more sense but that wasn't what they were going for.
Maybe just World 2. Their planet was basically just an endless desert - Koopahari Desert to be exact. I thought maybe we’d see a different dimension or “World” in the sequel.
And now apparently Nintendo is taking another stab at a Mario movie, animated by Illumination. And understandably, Miyamoto is going to be a producer and have heavy control over the story.

The decision to refer to Bowser as King Koopa (or simply Koopa) was probably inspired by the cartoon series.
I only ever saw the cartoon, not the game, so I thought that was his name.
And if it was not mentioned somewhere already, the japanese name for the charactrer is actually Kuppa or Koopa. Bowser seems to be the name for western markets.
I used to always call him King Koopa. I didnt actually start calling him bowser myself until super Mario rpg.
They didn't change the name dumbasses. Bowser was always his name. King Koopa was always his Title. Not that hard to figure out!

Garth Palmer he was King Koopa in the states up until Super Mario World where he started going by Bowser I was so confused as a kid thinking Bowser and King Koopa were two different characters

Koopa (or Kuppa) was Bowser's name in the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros.
His name was switched to Bowser for the North American release.
I always hate when companies do that kind of stuff, unless it's something like SEGA changing the Mega Drive to Genesis because of a trademark.

Of all the things to get movies, I still wonder why we couldn't get a MechWarrior movie. I would have been all over this, as I love MechWarrior FMVs. With the Inner Sphere and its hundreds of years of history, you're not at any kind of shortage for a plot either. If you watch any MechWarrior FMV, such as the intros to MechCommander or MechWarrior 4, you can see how awesome a movie could have been. I could written plots for one myself, if I thought anyone of power would ever do something with it.

Warcraft was pretty good (critics may not like it but us Warcraft fans loved it). I also liked the Mortal Kombat movie.

Is the quote James grabbed on Miyamoto actually about the live action? Or was that a quote on the Japanese animated Mario film?
I don't mind this movie. Not great, but it has a spot in my heart. I saw it in the theatre for a friend's 7th birthday party. All everyone was excited for was seeing Yoshi, and I ended up falling asleep during that part. I remember leaving the theatre thinking the fungus turning out to be the transformed king was really clever, and I still do actually. It was a nice use of material from Mario 3, and it upped the threat, made it a "mystery", and adapted it well to live action.
Also, I think the dinosaur theme was in there because they were pushing Super Mario World so hard at the time.
But you didn't mention the other cliff hanger: Where Nintendo CEOs come to offer two of the characters their very own movie....

Well, in this day and age, when there are countless video game characters, you're not that far off.
Bob Hoskins was phenomenal. WFRR is one of my favourite films of all time. And his portrayal of Smee in Hook was pretty fantastic as well. Speaking of which, you should review Hook at some point!

Back in the 90s in México we always called Bowser, "Koopa".So when the movie came out, it made sense to everybody. The koopa troopers were only know as "tortugas".

I never understand why people hate how she was called toadstool. If anything it makes more sense. Toadstool is a type of mushroom and the toads look just like them. Plus Mario eats mushrooms all the time.

Great review. I love this film, while still recognizing it's faults. It's an imaginative, unique film, and a time capsule of the era in which it was made.
Sure, though it’s still hard to look at this film without having expectations shaped by Mario’s modern style and feel. Time has not treated this film politely; maybe if it wasn’t claiming to be Mario, people would look more carefully at it.
This is such a classic! Loved it when I was younger. Brought back so many memories once I bought it on dvd years ago.

Not gonna lie, I have a soft spot for this movie. If you ignore the fact that it's supposed to be an adaptation, it works much better on its own. It's not by any means great, but it's fun.
I can appreciate it for what it is. Cyberpunk + dinosaurs with mushrooms on top.

The best Mario Bros. movie was a Japanime where Mario wants to rescue Toadstool from a forceful marriage to Bowser. Luigi just wants gold. What's funny is watching Bowser being in denial that Toadstool doesn't reciprocate his feelings. I don't speak Japanese, so I can't remember what it was called. The ending is typical of how Toadstool treats Mario.

Idgaf, I loved this movie. I think the reasoning is because my son was a huge Mario Bros fan when he was very little. We even watch the Super Mario Super Show, the old live action tv show. Sometimes a movie is so bad, that it’s actually great. This is one of them for me

I love the Super Mario Bros movie! I was just getting into Nintendo after playing Super Smash Bros Brawl and I found the Super Mario Bros movie at Block Buster. Since I never really played the games before hand, I had nothing to compare it to. I watched it everyday, all day until we had to turn it back in. I'm pretty sure we rented it more than once. I was honestly surprised when I found out that the majority didn't like it. I have it on DVD now. Through some stroke of luck, I got it in a white elephant exchange. Best present ever!
STILL hoping Nintendo grows the balls to do a Legend of Zelda movie... THERE is a game that can translate to the big screen.
I hope it doesn't end up like this.

I remember seeing the Super Mario Brothers add from an ALIENS movie magazine that sold figures from the Alien movies in the early 1990's. I was so excited...but then I seen it and was like wow this is not what I expected but hey Hudson couldn't of said it better himself..."Game over man!! Game over!!" God rest Paxton's soul.

It wasn't a terrible movie. It was entertaining. Which I can't say that for most movies now days.
I completely agree with this sentiment. Most modern movies can't achieve what this movie did. Perhaps not in terms of budget, but certainly in terms of actual enjoyment. It's sad that we never saw the promised sequel at the end.

You're right -- the film takes a lot of flak, but it's a surprisingly enjoyable sci-fi B movie.
“Toadstool” is a kind of mushroom. So being as she’s the Princess of Mushroom Kingdom or whatever, and there’s mushrooms all over the game, that was presumably the thought process. “Toad” similar reference.
Now that there’s a new Mario movie coming, I wanna see James review that one.

Just as Princess Toadstool was always Princess Peach in Japan. Bowser was always Koopa in Japan. The movie seems to have picked the names they felt most to be most fitting.

I love this movie. So good. Definitely not a faithful adaptation, but extremely enjoyable. Plus, it just becomes fun to look for all of the references. The characters are hilarious, and who could forget the elevator scene? I'm sure there's a nostalgia bias here. I saw the movie in theaters, around the time I was in kindergarten. So the fact that it didn't follow the games that well didn't really bug me at the time.
I could see this being entertaining to a 5 or 6 year old boy at that time. I was 14 when it came out and it was a disappointment. I think they should have went a totally different route. Re watching it for me just reminds of how bad it was. Nintendo has had a lot of success with doing things wrong.
Frankly i don't know who you would make a faithful live action adaptation in the 90's. Doing whole CGI environment just wasn't possible yet. Even then the Mario Games have mostly been light on Story. Especially back then. So i don't know where else they could have gone with it in Live Action. Even then Animation seems more like fit for Mario. I mean i think theirs a reason nobody attempted a Live Action Sonic movie. Just think of the poor bastard that would have to wear a Hedgehog outfit.

I liked this movie for what it was and for me it was a good fantasy of what mario bros would be if it was actually real.
The plot follows "Mario Bros." far more faithfully than the more popular NES sequel that actually lent the film it's name.
"Mario and Luigi are two Italian American plumber brothers from Brooklyn who notice strange creatures, Koopas, crabs and other such lifeforms are infesting the sewers of New York and messing with the plumbing, they proceed below to clean the sewers up".... Main setup of this Movie, and also the Synopsis of the early 80's Arcade Game.

I just got a new horror movie idea... Zombie Dinosaurs.
You might be able to shoot a human zombie and kill it, but how are you gonna take down the mighty T-rex zombie!?
Boredness That might actually be a funny twist... They think the world is saved because they evolved the zombie dinosaurs into normal zombies, they think they saved the day.
Then the zombies attack.
