Taito also made Rastan Saga in '87 which is heavily influenced by Conan the Barbarian. I loved sword and sorcery games as a kid and this one was amazing, albeit tough as nails. I used to love playing it at a Safeway grocery store while my mom was buying the groceries.
loved this game as a kid. it was fast paced and the jumping was fun, it also set it apart from other games. little known fact (or maybe mis-remembering), during the title screen, you could control the kage's jumping without putting in any money.
James, please Don't stop doing what you're doing. Future generations deserve to see the video games we grew up playing and you do it better than anyone.
Hey, Nerd, the HDMI thing seems to be putting diagonal lines on the NES footage, just putting that out there. It doesn't get in the way but it's better to know about it so that you don't notice it after several videos with it
I agree that its hard to look at but its not a bug, its a feature. The emulation being used probably has several scanline options, all meant to smear pixels like a crt.
Love the scriptwriting for this episode, and I also love how you brought back the whole abridging bad game endings trope from older years. Solid episode, well done nerd!
I know James has to be negative about everything, thats what the nerd does. But I'm really disapointed about the A Button action, it's real purpose is to parry enemy shurikens (can't parry the fireballs). I remember spaming A all the game lol.
5:49 FYI, The A button melee attack can deflect and erase smaller projectiles, such as most of the enemy's shurikens. You actually deflected some in your gameplay. And the hotdog is a magical scroll (but who cares lol).
If you have turbo in your controls, you can just swing your sword forever and deflect 80% of projectiles. It's very useful. His criticisms are weird for a Famicom / NES enthusiast.
I actually thought this game was really amazing and ahead of it's time. No other game where you could just fly around like the climb trees. The action was fun and fast. Cool power ups. This was always a hidden gem for me.

Are they available physically, or only digitally?
@@neypaz8054 Digital as far as I know.
@@jimmy33music Ouch... oh well, thanks for the answer
The Legend of Kage is also the bgm title of Touhou Project 1 and 2.
yea,Zun used to work at Taito in the 1990s.And 博丽霊夢と幻想郷 is adapted from Ki Ki KaiKai (小夜ちゃん)
funny magical people were related to this?
Didn't expect to get touhou-hijacked in an AVGN video.
When I was a kid, one of my friends' mom was a housewife and just played this when she had nothing to do. I watched her beat the whole game without getting hit once, that's how much she played this game lol.
Sounds like a bad housewife
@@TheDmaize oof
@@TheDmaize how so? She only played it when she had nothing to do.
@@juanpedro5579 exactllyyyyyy
That poor lady deserved a better game.
Taito also made Rastan Saga in '87 which is heavily influenced by Conan the Barbarian. I loved sword and sorcery games as a kid and this one was amazing, albeit tough as nails. I used to love playing it at a Safeway grocery store while my mom was buying the groceries.
Laughed so hard at "K-Keeeeen?"
, 😂😂😂
Keeeeem-star
Same so funny
Odd that history forgot the actual Kage sequel, "Demon Sword" also for the NES.
Demon sword was sweet
Oh
Not
loved this game as a kid. it was fast paced and the jumping was fun, it also set it apart from other games. little known fact (or maybe mis-remembering), during the title screen, you could control the kage's jumping without putting in any money.
You remember correctly! I distinctly remember doing it
"What were they thinking!?" total count: 61
Really? 61? I would have probably guessed around 100 episodes, or at least half.
I think we need more AVGN stats. :-)
AVGN: *Bites the controller in a fit of rage*
ME: I KNEW I WASNT THE ONLY ONE
Oh, bro. I was on a steady diet of sega and nintendo controllers and wires from age 8-13
James, please Don't stop doing what you're doing. Future generations deserve to see the video games we grew up playing and you do it better than anyone.
Such a great episode, felt like one of the older ones.
Alot of his recent ones hes been putting out have been reminding me of the classics like he never fell off just simple to the point avgn CLASSIC
Exactly. This is what i like. I couldn’t stand the cinematic ones like with gilbert gottfried.
Love that the bread is called “Schmidt”
It was Italian bread, too.
Mamamia bread
Should rename the show to "Piece of Schmidt games"
I was just a smalllll townnnnn giiiiirl...
Fun fact: in French, the verb "caguer" /ka.ɡe/ means to defecate.
The same in Spanish... The word is “cagar”
Same in portuguese "cagar"
@@Nolroa not the way I was expecting to improve my Spanish today
@@Griff01 Un melhoramento de mierda jajajajajaj
In Danish it means cake
The nerd's anger in this one reminded me of his earlier episodes. Ah, gotta love the blast from the past. ❤
Hey, Nerd, the HDMI thing seems to be putting diagonal lines on the NES footage, just putting that out there. It doesn't get in the way but it's better to know about it so that you don't notice it after several videos with it
This... Please turn them off.
I agree that its hard to look at but its not a bug, its a feature. The emulation being used probably has several scanline options, all meant to smear pixels like a crt.
@@_LennonM false. It's not emulation, or scanlines, it's a problem with the signal from a bad HDMI mod
I didn’t realize those lines weren’t just part of the game. I remember lines on NES games. Been a lot of years since I had a working NES though.
I say go back to the retro avs. That's what I use and it's awesome
looks like Kage's blade with no reach, is more effective then Dr. Jekyll's cane with lots of reach
for sure but you gotta pound that button quick
"But I'm not sayin' 'Blanka,' 'cause Blanka sounds like 'blanket,' man."

Episode 87 - Ninja Gaiden (Jun. 14th, 2011)
Man, that was so long ago I still had hopes for the future back then.
Love the scriptwriting for this episode, and I also love how you brought back the whole abridging bad game endings trope from older years. Solid episode, well done nerd!
They aren’t bad games dude
I know James has to be negative about everything, thats what the nerd does.
But I'm really disapointed about the A Button action, it's real purpose is to parry enemy shurikens (can't parry the fireballs). I remember spaming A all the game lol.
This is important
There's a decent chance he really didn't know about it while playing.
I mean he didn’t even show the wild alien level in Ecco what do you expect lol
I seriously doubt he even plays the games anymore.
@@nathansossai He says he always lines actually playing the game without faking it even if there are faster methods.
PSA: "Kage" when spoken means "take a dump" in portuguese.
Also in spanish.
A lenda do Cagão.
@@blaze45ful in spanish is "cagué" not "kage".i.
@@stemen1162 I know, but it sound the same way.
@@stemen1162 No, "take a dump" es imperativo, y el imperativo en español es "cague", no "cagué", bobo.
5:49 FYI, The A button melee attack can deflect and erase smaller projectiles, such as most of the enemy's shurikens. You actually deflected some in your gameplay. And the hotdog is a magical scroll (but who cares lol).
He also never realized that the cane in Jakyll & Hyde works on enemy projectiles.
If you have turbo in your controls, you can just swing your sword forever and deflect 80% of projectiles. It's very useful. His criticisms are weird for a Famicom / NES enthusiast.
My favorite mispronunciation of Guile is still to this day Gwee-Lay.
DUDE I loved the Tatio Arcade Compilations. The Darius Games were my jam.
I have “Taito Legends 1 & 2” for the PS2. The are compilation of Taito’s arcade games.
Anyone else remember a fun little game called "Demon Sword" on NES? I think it was kind of a spin-off or spiritual successor to Legend of Kage. . . 🤔
6:31
I love when bosses are ridiculously easy. Makes for fantastic comedy.
The sword swing was to deflect incoming ninja stars.
8:47 when he bit the controller I felt that
"Ningenitals" that made me laugh to hard more than a decade later and his jokes are still crispy.
You laughed until you were hard?
Fits.
I actually thought this game was really amazing and ahead of it's time.
No other game where you could just fly around like the climb trees. The action was fun and fast. Cool power ups.
This was always a hidden gem for me.
Ə
I loved this game!
"The guy from fist of the north star"
He's probably only familiar with the game and doesn't know it's a show
AVGN is the only game review I ever watch because he shows emotion in his videos, even if that emotion is just pure anger
I played this game in one of those bootleg plug and play consoles when I was a kid and didn't understand any of it. I thought I was bad at it but watching this brought back some memories.
I swear Warpath is turning into the new Raid with this over-advertising
Tom Honks driving a tonk on his way to the bonk. xDDDD
Glad the Nintoaster is fixed.
Kind of fixed. Too bad there is diagonal line interference like every other pixel.

I might be missing something here. Which episode did it get broken? Anybody know?

When I saw the Nintoaster, I said to myself, "Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time."
I'm happy to see it fixed. Actually, it'd be cool to have one of those myself, in box, lolz
“Like actor Tom honks, driving a tonk on his way to the bonk”
This looks like an early version of Demon Sword, a game that if I'm not looking back with rose-tinted glasses, was actually pretty great.
I just went on lunch break thanks James

This feels like a massive return to the classic nerd video feel from the swearing down to the anger. And of course its an nes game on the Nin-toaster! Great episode!!

As a fan of the series that line hurt me a little.
Not everyone is a man of culture as us anime fans are.
You mean "Keenshyro?"
If this a Jojo reference?
I'm sure that line was targeted the silly NES game, not the Anime or the character himself. :P
@@PlayerLin Not gonna lie, that game was always one of my guilty pleasures as a kid and I still like it to this day. It's kinda how I got into the anime, though I was way too young to be into it.
