Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) episode 185: The Legend of Kage for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Kage is an action game that was released by Taito in 1985. Players take role of the young Iga ninja named 'Kage' on the mission to rescue Princess Kiri from villains.

The Nerd is one of the very few OG RUclipsrs that has always stuck to his roots and known his audience. Much respect for James
Many of the old greats burnt out and just do twitch streams thanks to youtube becoming much more unfriendly to small time creators. I get it, It's easier to just stream all the time and makes about as much money, but it feels like a waste of talent. Others transitioned to doing the type of garbage one might find if they accidentally clicked on the trending tab.

Kikikaikai became what we know as the "Pocky and Rocky" series that was on the SNES. In fact, the Touhou series drew very heavily from the game, especially for it's main heroine Reimu.

The Sword attack can block ninja stars and melee attacks, so it's really more of a block than a primary attack. The primary being the Shuriken

"The legend of kage" is literally the second NES game I ever owned after Super Mario Brothers. Me and my brothers used to sit there for hours playing that game. Kage's legend is embedded in my memory and it holds a special place in my childhood ❤ but I can't lie I agree it is terrible but there's just something so addicting about it 😭

I loved this game as a kid. Can't believe nobody mentioned it, the nunchuck/stick attack can actually block ninja stars. If you play it with a turbo controller it's super fun to block all the stars, I think that's the way to play it. Also the jumping felt super awesome like in an anime. Also doing a melee on somebody mid air was like in those martial arts movies where two jump attacking eachother and one falls safely to their feet while the other crashes to the ground dead.
I miss turbo controllers.
The sequel to this game, Legend of Kage 2, introduces a new character out of nowhere. Apparently, the new character is a kunoichi out of the same village as Kage, which is Iga. But during the playthrough of this new character, you'll come across a shocking secret that not even I can comprehend.
Now that James made us all hyped on Ninjas on the moon, he has to film it himself.
He's trolling by letting you know he's trolling. The 80's version. Great stuff.

Definitely. I've enjoyed the last few episodes. At one point it was starting to feel like the videos were becoming more about setting up a silly skit that had questionable relevance to the game being reviewed,* but in the last few videos it feels like he's gone back to basics, giving us angry commentary about the game. Less is more.
*That's not to say a skit is necessarily a bad thing, but the majority of them just wrecked the flow and general tone of the video. Like you've got this angry dude ranting about a game that's either bad or frustratingly hard, and then all of a sudden he's off on some wacky misadventure.

You need to fckin play Demon Sword. It’s the Ninja Gaiden version of this game. Literally! One of the best on NES so far.

When I was a Kid I didn't own a 100 Nes games, My collection was 5 games. And believe me Between Deadly Tower and Legend of Kage. Kage was the best thing in the world
A friend of mine had it, and if we had to choose between LoK and Fester's Quest, we usually played the former.
It's not even a bad game.
When I was a kid, I had all of three NES games. One was Mario Bros., because the console came with it, one was Mario 3, and one was a top-down action RPG called The Magic of Scheherazade.

This episode feels like a mini love letter to the AVGN series as a whole.
Like he was parodying himself in just the right convincing way. I laughed when he presumed what the viewers might already be doing. Three times. I’ll be honest, I would believe a movie like ninjas on the moon existed with Who Killed Captain Alex level quality.
I did google ninja's on the moon...I am used to him referencing things I haven't heard of so I thought it was a real movie
It is amazing that the AVGN intro song has, after more than 10 years, become a classic itself. It gives me nostalgia and "brings me back to the past".

@@RDVD look my man. Im not one for comment argument but I promise you it's not. Ill dive in a little since this is something that's bothered me for that last couple years of AVGN. Cliche I know, but I have been watching Cinemassacre for a very long time. I was 13 in 2007 and this series was pretty much the most popular one on youtube. I'm just trying to say I've watched literally every episode of the Nerd. The statement "this felt like one of the older episodes" is completely false because it doesn't. I'll just throw out a random example from "season 2" watch the atari 5200 video side by side then come back to me. I'm NOT a cinemassacre hater since I still watch it. But I guarantee that even James knows these ain't it. Sorry for poor grammar.
@@newportfed10 dude... i was watching avgn since 2009, and even i felt some oldschool vibe. I think its more of a subjective feelings, i guess. But you’re right though, last episodes of avgn are not that interesting, its like something is absent. Im talking about the time period from 2016 till now
@@newportfed10 well the anger and frustration felt really genuine and that's threw me back and made feel like it was and old episode. For what is worth I wouldn't want the nerd to be stuck in 2008. I celebrate that the nerd keeps on going and I welcome the different approaches that James takes. Some times is not as fun but must times it makes me laugh. Sorry for my grammar too xD

the jumping actually what made this gameplay really cool and unique, and oddly satisfying! a lot of anime fights are exaggerated and take place in the air.

James, I absolutely cannot WAIT to watch your next review! Huge fan of the Angry Video Game Nerd and Taito! Hearing you talking about that you're going to look at Taito Legends 1 & 2 made me super happy, excited and hyped! Taito Legends 1 & 2 were the arcade compilations that got me to retro gaming and seeing you mention them as well as saying you're about to review them raise my fists in the air in happiness and go out "YES!" and I am not ashamed to admit that! These compilations hold a special place in my heart and bring back so many amazing memories and I absolutely CANNOT WAIT to see you review them! It's like two of my retro gaming names working together! I'm absolutely REALLY looking forward to it! ^^
Taito Legends 1 & 2 are both really great games.
I'll give the NES version of Legend of Kage credit for having an ending with proper grammar and spelling and that's saying a lot during the early years of the NES.
Fun fact: in French, the verb "caguer" /ka.ɡe/ means to defecate.

But I'm really disapointed about the A Button action, it's real purpose is to parry enemy shurikens (can't parry the fireballs). I remember spaming A all the game lol.

No other game where you could just fly around like the climb trees. The action was fun and fast. Cool power ups.

loved this game as a kid. it was fast paced and the jumping was fun, it also set it apart from other games. little known fact (or maybe mis-remembering), during the title screen, you could control the kage's jumping without putting in any money.

Hey, Nerd, the HDMI thing seems to be putting diagonal lines on the NES footage, just putting that out there. It doesn't get in the way but it's better to know about it so that you don't notice it after several videos with it

I agree that its hard to look at but its not a bug, its a feature. The emulation being used probably has several scanline options, all meant to smear pixels like a crt.
@@_LennonM false. It's not emulation, or scanlines, it's a problem with the signal from a bad HDMI mod
I didn’t realize those lines weren’t just part of the game. I remember lines on NES games. Been a lot of years since I had a working NES though.
I say go back to the retro avs. That's what I use and it's awesome

Taito also made Rastan Saga in '87 which is heavily influenced by Conan the Barbarian. I loved sword and sorcery games as a kid and this one was amazing, albeit tough as nails. I used to love playing it at a Safeway grocery store while my mom was buying the groceries.

This looks like an early version of Demon Sword, a game that if I'm not looking back with rose-tinted glasses, was actually pretty great.
